Slayer, Anthrax, and Death Angel Reign Blood on Pittsburgh

When the announcement of the Slayer North American Tour was announced, it may have seemed, to some, that a mistake was made.  Slayer with Anthrax and Death Angel?  Three thrash powerhouses who have stood the test of time performing on the same night?  It’s no wonder Stage AE in Pittsburgh was sold out last night, filled to the brim with raucous metal fans chomping at the bit.  All three bands put on killer performances and showed no signs of slowing down, regardless of their ages and band time span.

As far as openers go, well it’s tough to call Death Angel and opener, they have been around since ’82 in one incarnation or another since their landmark hit, “Bored”.  Also, Death Angel is in all essence a subset of the Big 4 thrash bands, emerging from the San Fran scene.  Since their last Pittsburgh visit a fe Halloweens ago, Death Angel has been busy touring their latest The Evil Divide and even producing a “thrashumentary”.  Released last year, the film tells the story of Death Angel from  inception to the present day (get it here).  Singer, Mark Osegueda, was as lively as ever and spot on vocally. Guitarists Rob Cavestany and Ted Aguilar spew out axe pyrotechnics, while Damien Sisson (bass) and Will Carroll (drums) kept the brutal low end so important to the genre.  The new material may be some of their best and is worth getting in the doors early to witness.

Anthrax was in Pittsburgh last January with Lamb of God and put forth one of the best classic Anthrax laden sets that this writer has ever witnessed.  This night Anthrax played just a bit more of their excellent new effort For All Kings, but definitely played some of their best including, “Caught In A Mosh”, “Got The Time”, “Antisocial” and “Indians”.  Two of those songs (“Got The Time” and “Antisocial”) are cover songs that the band has so uniquely made their own, most people do not know that Joe Jackson and Trust, respectively,  actually wrote them.  Scott Ian (guitar) was once again a model of thrash and was, as usual, showing what a guitar god can do and really have a good time doing so.  Singer Joey Belladonna was in excellent singing condition and has breathed new life into the band since his return.  Newcomer, guitarist Jonathan Donais, is fitting in and also breathing fire into the bands material.  He proved his worth in Shadows Fall and is absolutely killing it as Rob Caggiano’s replacement since 2013.  Charlie Benante and Frank Bello were completely synced in (after all they are family) and a pleasure to watch, although it was tough to get a glimpse of Frank’s face as his hair was in constant motion as he powered through the set.  It’s incredible that this band just keeps getting better after all these years  (1981) and is not only producing top level records, but also matching that with high energy shows.

It took all of 35 seconds upon entry before one heard the infamous call, “SLAAAAAAYYYYYEEERRRR!”  The band has been in high gear as of late, pumping out a trio of videos for Repentless and just starting this N.American Tour.  Like their counterparts and tour mates Death Angel and Anthrax, they have been around since the inception of thrash (1981).  Their material is as fresh and brain damaging as ever and their live show is tough to top in terms of sheer onslaught of power.  Kerry King, massive chains and tribal tattoos and all, stays in the pocket and just rips from there, always a jaw dropper to watch.  Tom Araya was dead on vocally as well and of course his bass playing is underrated.  The addition of Exodus guitar player Gary Holt since Jeff Hanneman‘s illness and eventual death has added a different layer and dimension to the band, the material on Repentless really showing his influence in various ways.  Paul Bostaph’s return on drums is also a different layer, replacing his replacement who he replaced originally (huh?), Dave Lombardo, who is now behind the kit for The Misfits reunion shows.  To sum it up, Slayer was Slayer, they were impressive, loud, fast, and like Conan, crushed their enemies before them.  An awesome night for metal and for Pittsburgh for sure, and one tough to beat.  Maybe Clutch, Zakk Sabbath, and Kyng can try on October 1 when they hit Stage AE.

ABOUT SLAYER
For more than three decades, Slayer’s onslaught has proven the band to be the supreme thrash-metal band on the planet, the band that other heavy acts are measured against and aspire to. The two-time Grammy-winners have also accumulated an abundance of certified Gold Albums along with “Best…” awards from media outlets all over the world, including Kerrang!SPINMetal HammerRevolver, and Esquire.  Throughout Slayer’s history, the band has never faltered in unleashing its extreme and focused sonic assault, and, unlike many of its contemporaries who “commercialized” their sound, Slayer has remained crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the mainstream.  Slayer’s founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2013, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in for him since.  Paul Bostaph, who was Slayer’s drummer from ’94 – ’01, has rejoined bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King, and is back behind the kit.
In September 2015, Slayer released Repentless, the band’s 12th studio album, the first without Hanneman and first with producer Terry Date, to widespread rave reviews and the highest chart debut of the band’s career. The band also teamed up with director BJ McDonnell for two high-concept and brutal music videos for the album’s “Repentless” (9.5-million views) and then for  “You Against You.” (4.2-million views).

Slayer Sacrifices Pittsburgh on the Altar of Stage AE

Perhaps no other band is more synonymous with true heavy, heavy metal than Slayer.  Think about it.  Even people who have no real understanding or reference to one Kerry King riff still know that when it comes to some seriously damaging eardrum straight down your gullet rock n’ roll, Slayer is the first name in the unholy catalog.  Last night, in Pittsburgh, PA, a gathering of those who do have reference and reverence came to worship the band that truly has stuck to their roots of Bay Area thrash and owes much of it to some “little unknown guy” named Rick Rubin who first believed in them.

Pouring into their classic hits with firm gusto, Tom Araya immediately did what he does best by letting that deep growl hit the crowd with “Hell Awaits”, “The Antichrist”, “Necrophiliac”, and “Mandatory Suicide”.  By the time that third song hit, Tom broke out in a huge grin and the audience who was just going completely ‘ape shit’ at what was before them.  The middle of the floor had cleared into a massive mosh pit, the balcony was buzzing and swaying with frenetic energy as male and female alike sang every word as their arms swung up and down in rhythm.  Of course Kerry King was holding his position down on stage left, blazing away with impossible flurries of notes and hitting the strings so hard it’s hard to believe they don’t break constantly (on a side note this writer caught his guitar pick and for the limited time he used it, it took a beating like a red headed step child).  On the other side of the stage, Exodus’ main man and Hanneman replacement, Gary Holt seemed to be in a trance of pure mission oriented destruction to blow everyone’s faces off with his power playing.  Looking more like Zakk Wylde these days, Gary fits like a glove in this band for a guy (Jeff Hanneman) that everyone knows, including Gary, that cannot truly be replaced.  Speaking of replacements, the controversy before the tour of Dave Lombardo’s departure was a debate for many a fan, but former member come back Paul Bostaph was not only reliable but spot on last night with serious technical ability and pounding away like a furious madman.

Other songs that Slayer wailed away on were “Captor of Sin”, “War Ensemble”, “Postmortem”, “Altar of Sacrifice”, “Jesus Saves”, “At Dawn They Sleep”, “Die By The Sword”, “Spirit in Black”, and “Hallowed Point”.  While many of these are amazing songs, and sure to be somebody’s favorite, they probably are not the absolute ‘ones’ that the crowd came to see.  And so the anticipation built…and then came “Seasons in the Abyss”…the crowd ALL sings, “Close your eyes Look deep in your soul Step outside yourself And let your mind go Frozen eyes stare deep in your mind as you DIE”, and one watches the hair raise on their arms.

Throw in an Exodus cover of “Strike of the Beast”, “Dead Skin Mask”, the absolute classics and all time faves of many a fan “Reigning Blood”and “South of Heaven” and the ultimate tribute to Jeff Hanneman, “Angel of Death” and you have yourself one helluva complete package and damn near dream show for any fan.

Slayer will only be on the road for a bit more in Canada and the U.S. before they shut it down at the end of the month.  From there it looks like they are headed back to the studio for new tracks and a new tour and plan to hit Pittsburgh (hopefully) again.  Whether that will be on a headlining tour of their own or the much speculated headlining spot of mayhem remains to be seen, but regardless Slayer is still at the top of the metal heap slaying them all.

Book Review: “One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager”

Let me start by saying that if I had this book in my possession twenty-five years ago I would definitely be in a different place right now in my life and I certainly could have been a much better asset for the bands I managed.  Not that I have any regrets, but instead of watching “Almost Famous” and just wondering how one goes about getting on the road with the band, this book actually gives you a step by step guide.  Mark Workman lays out such a comprehensive strategy to becoming a working tour manager that if one has the will, Workman provides the way.

Mark Workman has been a successful tour manager and lighting designer in the music business since 1983. His list of past and present clients includes Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Machine Head, Danzig, Mudvayne, Dio, Queens of the Stone Age, Devildriver, Soulfly, Sepultura and many others.

As a lighting designer, Mark Workman has designed high-impact lighting performances for many music tours, including the infamous Clash of the Titans (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice In Chains, & Suicidal Tendencies) in 1990/1991 and American Carnage 2010 (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax & Testament), as well as for many music videos and live DVDs such as Machine Head’sElegies DVD filmed at Brixton Academy in London, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace Live DVD shot at the Hollywood Palladium, and Testament’s Dark Roots of Thrash Live DVD shot at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY.

“One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager” starts of  with a very strong endorsement by Alex Skolnick of Testament, of which Mark Workman was the lighting director then later manager.  These are the topics that the book explores:

Part 1 tells you how I got started as a tour manager and why I wrote this book.
Part 2 teaches you how to organize a concert tour and:
create a complete and accurate tour budget;
hire the best road crew;
lease the right tour bus and safest driver;
book hotels and air travel the right way;
create a proper backstage pass system and where to get it made;
deal with foreign artist tax for your band;
apply for overseas visas and work permits for your entourage;
create a tour book and the vital information it should contain;
coordinate trucking and air cargo;
Introduction
xiii
hire sound and lighting systems for your tour;
understand tour riders and contracts;
prepare ATA carnets and equipment manifests;
get backdrops, scrims and stage sets made;
prepare your tour accounting and a lot more.
Part 3 shows you how to get organized and properly advance each show and:
what you should know about stage plots and input charts;
preparing your pre-advance package;
making a proper advance sheet;
how to advance each show;
advancing your cash requirements and much more.
Part 4 guides you through an entire show day and shows you:
what it takes to be a tour manager running a music tour;
the mechanics of how to do press, meet-and-greets, and in-stores;
the proper way to do your guest list each day;
the right way to handle venue security;
how to do your daily tour accounting correctly;
how to do your show settlement each night;
important information about merchandising, foreign currencies, and more.
Part 5 shows you how to:
promote yourself so you can build your successful career;
find your first job as a tour manager;
and the road hazards to avoid.

That list speaks volumes, but the content definitely backs it up.  Add to that Workman’s writing style that is very smooth, humorous at times, and easy to understand, and you have one hell of a how to guide.  The promise of a series of these books is very enticing and long overdue.  It would not be surprising to see Berklee School of Music or The Musicians Institute making this book, or eventually the series, part of their curriculum…it’s that good.

If you want to get into the music business, are in the music business already, or are like me, and just fascinated with the music business, you will find this to be a treasured find.

Mark Workman is also a former boxing writer whose feature articles have appeared on BoxingScene and Fox Sports.

Banger Films Launches Final “Extreme Metal” Crowndfunding Push

Award-Winning Metal Filmmakers Join Forces with Underground Metal Community to Complete “Extreme Metal”

After an enormously successful IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign raising nearly $40,000, Grammy-nominated and Juno-winning Banger Films is embarking on a final push to create the “Lost Episode” of the series Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal. The episode will take viewers on an unprecedented journey across Europe and North America to tell the story of metal’s most aggressive and misunderstood sub-genre.

“Our first IndieGoGo campaign was a huge success and we were blown-away by the support of the metal community,” says Banger Films co-founder Sam Dunn. “The research, writing, travel and filming is now complete and we’ve captured some amazing interviews and footage. But we need to turn this footage into an episode!” The new campaign kicked off Friday, August 9th. Details of the campaign, including a brand-new trailer featuring exclusive footage from Banger’s Extreme Metal filming trip, can be found here: igg.me/at/LostEpisode

Originally broadcast on VH1 Classic (USA) and Much More Music (Canada), Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s series Metal Evolution presented 11 episodes based on the “Heavy Metal Family Tree” originally shown in their groundbreaking documentary, Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey. Host and metalhead-turned-anthropologist Sam Dunn crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of Heavy Metal across its 40+ year history, covering everything from the Pre-History of Metal and Shock Rock to Grunge and Thrash Metal. But one very important episode was left out: Extreme Metal. “Some of the networks felt that Extreme Metal was too heavy or too niche. We’re out to prove that Extreme Metal is metal’s most vital sub-genre and that metal would probably die without it!,” says Dunn.

Tom Gabriel Warrior, legendary frontman for extreme metal bands Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Triptykon, was interviewed by Dunn for the episode: “It was an absolute honour and a pleasure to host Sam and his outstanding team at my place in Zurich. That extreme metal has been overlooked in this series so far is a scandal. This episode is utterly overdue!”

Bands appearing in the episode include Venom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Slayer, Napalm Death, Carcass, Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Enslaved, Gojira and more. The episode will also feature some renowned locations in the history of Extreme Metal including Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida, as well as travel footage from Norway, Switzerland, UK, US, and Hellfest (France), one of the world’s biggest metal festivals.

Contributors’ support for the new IndieGoGo campaign will cover costs of finishing the episode which includes editing, archival and music licensing, onlining, sound mixing and other post-production costs. “People are often surprised by how much making quality film and TV costs. It requires a lot of hard work from a team of talented people to ensure we make the best possible show. Extreme Metal deserves the same high-production value and attention to detail that we gave the other Metal Evolution episodes”, adds Dunn. “I’m not getting paid to make this episode but what matters to me is that the Metal Evolution series is finally completed!”

HUNTRESS Reveals Song From Upcoming Album Song Co-Written By Lemmy of Motorhead

lemjill

HUNTRESS is back with the follow up to their buzzworthy debut album Spell Eater, which was released in 2012.  The album entitled Starbound Beast will be released on June 28th in Europe and on July 2nd in North America via Napalm Records.  The band recorded the album at Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles, CA, working with famed producer Zeuss (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, Agnostic Front).  The artwork for Starbound Beast was created once again by Vance Kelly (Slayer, Ghost B.C., Mastodon).

Today HUNTRESS has unveiled the first song from Starbound Beast.  The track entitled “I Want to Fuck You to Death” was co-written for singer Jill Janus by legendary Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister.

Frontwoman Jill Janus spoke about the collaboration:

“I met Lemmy through my former band Chelsea Girls. We’d play hard rock and metal covers featuring guest celebrities. Lemmy was already friends with the girls, so he played “Ace of Spades” with us and it blew my mind. We stayed in touch and would meet up at The Rainbow for drinks. So I asked him a few months back over Jack & Cokes if he’d write lyrics for a Huntress song and he said ‘Sure’. A few weeks later, I met him at the studio during Motorhead recording sessions. Lemmy handed me two two pieces of notebook paper with the lyrics for ‘I Want to Fuck You to Death’. I am beyond honored. To me, this is a love song. It is the most romantic song I’ve ever heard.”

Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister also spoke of the collaboration:

“The first time I heard Jill’s voice with Chelsea Girls, it was phenomenal. I wrote these lyrics from her point of view, the Huntress. ‘I Want to Fuck You to Death’ was inspired by her, written for her. I’ve always had a soft spot for her. And a hard spot too…”

The song is available as an exclusive stream on the HUNTRESS Facebook Page.  When visiting the facebook page, clicking the “like” button will enable the audio.

In support of Starbound Beast the band will be touring across North America this summer as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.   The band will be featured on the Jagermeister Stage alongside Machine Head, Battlecross & Others.  The tour kicks off June 29thin San Bernardino, CA and runs through August 4th in Dallas, TX.  A complete list of dates can be found below.  The band took part in the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival Press Conference and performed live, check out footage HERE.

HUNTRESS was spawned from the preternatural union of Jill Janus with underground metal bands Professor and Dark Black. They thrive on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos and catchy choruses that come from the band’s musical concoction of occult science and bong rips.HUNTRESS remains true to the roots of melodic heavy metal with a penchant for thrash, death and black metal.

In Memory of Jeff Hanneman…Rest in Peace

LEFT TO RIGHT: Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King, Dave Lombardo, Tom Araya

As most of you are probably aware Jeff Hanneman of Slayer passed away Thursday of liver failure.  In January 2011  he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, thought to be caused by a spider bite, and  he has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since the fall of that year.  It is not known at this time if the cause of his death is related to the bite and his ailments.

The last time Hanneman played with Slayer was at the April 2011 “Big Four” concert in Indio, California, when he joined them onstage for a two-song encore, but he hasn’t yet been able to tour again and has been replaced on tour by Exodus guitarist Gary Holt.

Slayer released this statement:

“Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure.  He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.”

Hanneman was composer of tons of Slayer classics including two Pittsburgh Music Magazine faves, ‘Angel of Death’ and  ‘Raining Blood’.  We will miss you brother…

GALERNA Post “Chemical Warfare” Slayer Cover

Spanish crusty Death Metal Punks GALERNA will release their album “The Abyss” on CD format November 20th via Horror Pain Gore Death Productions. Galerna was formed by Noel Kemper of Gruesome Stuff Relish, and “The Abyss” is mastered by Scott Hull of Pig.
Galerna play crusty old school Death Metal/Punk that is a filthy mix of Entombed’s “Wolverine Blues”, Motorhead, Skitsystem and Wolfbrigade. From the sick mind of veteran Noel Kemper (Gruesome Stuff Relish, Altar Of Giallo, Oltretomba, Broken Gravestones), “The Abyss” is an album that is as catchy as it is crushing, which captures the raw and dirty 80’s feel. Mastered by Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed at Visceral Sound, this album also includes a cover of Slayer’s “Chemical Warfare”. For fans of Bathory, Celtic Frost, Death Breath, Disfear, Dismember, Entombed, GBH, Motrhead, Skitsystem, Slayer, Tank, Venom and Wolfbrigade. A killer album…

WATAIN signs worldwide deal with Century Media Records

Century Media Records is proud to welcome Swedish black metal extremists WATAIN to its worldwide family. Legitimately labeled as genre leaders, deservedly awarded with a Swedish Grammy, playing the world’s biggest stages and touring the globe constantly while reaching numerous top positions in the annual reader’s polls, WATAIN have worked hard and achieved a lot over the past years despite successfully ignoring any kind of conformity and concession to the metal mainstream. Unrivaled in their unwillingness to compromise and clear artistic vision, WATAIN are most befittingly described with the title of BATHORY’s third opus – “Blood Fire Death”, a fact they never fail to underline with their infamous live shows: The stench of rotting animal cadavers, the inferno of candelabras and torches, chalices of blood, darkness and death – WATAIN are a full scale attack on all sensory organs. In days of toothless, sterile, family-friendly metal they embody danger and dread and are rewarded with a maximum of support and appreciation.

WATAIN comments:
“We are writing this from a magical place of desolation and desert-like vastness, where wondrous things are at this very moment taking place. Things that will come to colour our world as well as yours in the strangest hues for many years to come. We are entering this new chapter of WATAIN with a will and confidence to make it the most diverse and rememberable so far. And with the things that we have in mind for the future, it looks like it will be just so. Just wait and see, f***ers! Loud and terrible shall the trumpets of Devils sound…”

“Century Media is massively excited to work with WATAIN. This band has it all: charisma, the firm will to conquer the world, and an authenticity you rarely find these days. Mixed with their creativity and musical impact – this band will make it to the top. They are a healthy slap in the face for any Metal Bourgeois. We are ready to kill for them!” says Antje Lange, General Manager Century Media Europe

“I am very proud and excited to welcome WATAIN to the Century Media family. There are few bands that remind me of when I first discovered metal as a teenager that could give me the same feeling of extreme release and evil such as SLAYER, VENOM and MERCYFUL FATE did. WATAIN is one of those rare bands and I look forward to being a part of their growing career and helping today’s future metalhead find their way!” adds Don Robertson, President Century Media USA.

Formed back in 1998, the first two albums Rabid Death’s Curse (2000) and Casus Luciferi (2003) established the band firmly within the underground scene whereas Sworn To The Dark (2007) and especially Lawless Darkness (2010) helped them conquer a wider audience making them one of the most talked about acts in recent years. Musically rooted in classic black metal inspired by the likes of VENOM, HELLHAMMER, BATHORY, MAYHEM, DISSECTION as well as the grandeur of old IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA, RAINBOW, it is the larger-than-life aesthetics and total dedication to their art that elevates WATAIN beyond almost any other extreme metal band out there. WATAIN is satanic metal at its most frightening and fascinating.

After celebrating their 13th anniversary with the release of the DVD/double live album Opus Diaboli (2012) under the band’s own imprint His Master’s Noise, followed by an US tour with BEHEMOTH, THE DEVIL’S BLOOD and IN SOLITUDE earlier this year plus celebrated shows at Wacken and Bloodstock Open Air, 2013 will see the release of WATAIN’s much anticipated fifth studio album via His Master’s Noise in collaboration with Century Media Records. Beware!

Legacy of Disorder’s ‘Last Man Standing’ is Pure Metal Magic

With a siren’s wail, Legacy of Disorder opens up their latest effort, Last Man Standing. The sheer relentlessness of the first song, Thorns, tells the listener loud and clear what this experience will be about: pure metal onslaught. In the vein of Slayer, Testament, Exodus, and any number of powerful metal outfits, New Zealand now has Legacy of Disorder who are in fact creating their own legacy.

Although most of its members hail from New Zealand, fast-rising metallists Legacy of Disorder’s sound largely resembles the power metal that such renowned US bands like Pantera perfected and popularized. And as you’ll discover with their second release overall, ‘Last Man Standing’, it is only a matter of time until
Legacy of Disorder takes their rightful spot alongside the top modern day metal acts. “We think our style fits in well with today’s metal scene,” explains the group’s lead singer, James Robinson. “We have elements of a wide range of metal – all into one robust unit. Legacy of Disorder shows in a lot of ways the evolution of this genre, but with a unique sound that no one can replicate.”

With tunes such as Punish All, March to Death, Last Man Standing, Impaler, and Warrior Gene, there is no mistaking the subject matter as light listening. That is not say that LoD does not have an excellent sense of melody- but everything has its place. Legacy seem to be very concerned with ‘in your face’ metal at maximum volume. Lyrically there is no pussyfooting either. Brutal, direct, punishing, and violent the imagery created is of your favorite comic book fight scenes come to life before your eyes. Their execution of rythym to anchor their tunes while the guitars wail and crunch works extremely well, especially with some peppered in sound effects or ‘movie-like’ sound bites, thus creating a cinematic experience.

Alongside Robinson, Legacy of Disorder consists of fellow New Zealanders Rana Freilich (lead guitarist) and Jason Keill (bass), as well as Texas native Matt Thompson (drums). And there’s a reason why the lone star state provided the group with Thompson – Legacy of
Disorder has formed a tight bond with Dallas-based producer Sterling Winfield, who has worked in the past with Pantera, Damageplan, and Hellyeah. “Naturally, being fans of Pantera, we wanted to work with the same mastermind behind the scenes of such a great band,” points out Freilich. “After doing our demo here in New Zealand, we wanted the album to be the best it could, so we jumped on a plane, headed to Dallas, got stuck in with Sterling on our debut album [2008′ self-titled release] – which sounds great – and have been friends
and worked together ever since.””Sterling always keeps us on our toes, which is great in a studio environment, and draws the best out of each member – which is why we chose to work with Sterling again. This being our second album with Sterling, it felt like we were all on the same page. As a whole, there are many awesome memories – Rana’s noise gate pedal’s ridiculous battery consumption, James’
pantless antics, the bands’ ridiculous coffee consumption, and more laughs and funny stuff than you can shake a stick at. We think Sterling really got a taste of us Kiwis in our own environment!”

And as evidenced by such hard-hitting standout tracks as “Break,” “March to Death,” and the album’s title tune, the quartet is certainly starting to hit its metallic stride. “We would have to
say that we really enjoy all of the songs equally,” admits Keill. “It’s so hard to pick a favorite when you have worked on something that you have poured a lot of time and emotion into. Each song has moments that make my hair stand on end. It’s kind of like asking,’Which of your children do you like the best?'”
As one would figure from the explosiveness of their recordings thus
far, Legacy of Disorder is one ferocious live beast when they hit the stage, which Thompson confirms, when asked what can fans expect from catching the band live. “A high energy, hard-hitting precision live
set, showcasing each band member’s ability and presence, equating to a brutal live show. We look forward to setting in motion a tour for North America very soon.”

Pittsburgher’s can catch Legacy of Disorder when they play with DevilDriver and GWAR at Mr. Small’s in Millvale Nov. 26

The book, titled Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal, is an unauthorized “rockography” that transforms the extensive knowledge about Black Sabbath that Aberback has amassed over the years to the page for future music enthusiasts and students alike to enjoy.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is the only Black Sabbath biography written for middle and high school students. Thoroughly researched, annotated and highly informative, this book is an appealing read for all ages and a great way for parents to introduce their kids to some of the music they love and grew up with. This book chronicles one of rock’s most legendary band’s careers from its formation to the present day and does a superb job of conveying the group’s ups and downs, not glossing over any details while staying age-appropriate. Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is available in high-quality library bound hardcover as well as softcover editions and can be found wherever books are sold online.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal has already been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives and sits on the shelves of libraries throughout the United States to New Zealand, Singapore and the United States Army Base in Heidelberg, Germany.

BRIAN ABERBACK is a veteran music journalist specializing in hard rock and heavy metal. Aberback’s encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal and hard rock spans numerous genres. His interview list is a who’s who of heavy metal and hard rock legends, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament and Mercyful Fate. His work has appeared in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and on news and music websites. Many of his stories have been published in The Record, the largest daily newspaper in Northern New Jersey.

What sets Aberback apart, in addition to his strong writing style and dedication to his craft, has been his passion for giving heavy metal bands a shot at attracting new audiences through mainstream newspaper exposure. Over the years he’s introduced such bands as Nile, Cradle of Filth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and many, many more, through the pages of The Record and other publications, to music fans, and even metal fans, who likely would have never heard of these bands. Not often do you find daily newspaper writers publishing stories about the likes of D.R.I., Diamond Head, Everytime I Die, Iced Earth or The Gathering.

***An articulate and well-informed speaker with a vast knowledge of the history of rock-and-roll, musically and socially, with a specific emphasis on heavy metal and hard rock, BRIAN ABERBACK is available for book talks, panel discussions and as an expert commentator for television and radio programs.

Check out some great reviews on Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal:

“Refreshingly levelheaded and loaded with sourced quotes, it’s that rare middle-grade biography (or “rockography,” as the title page insists) that is able to trace a band’s history, revel in its rock awesomeness, and be blunt about such things as drug abuse, all the while keeping things at an age-appropriate keel.”
–Booklist

“Through this book, old and new fans alike learn about the band’s history and impact on the music industry.”
–Children’s Literature

Megadeth and Zombie Will Continue Co-Headlining Tour

ALL PHOTOS COPYWRITTEN AND COURTESY OF MPAPPHOTO
Megadeth and Rob Zombie rocked Stage AE in Pittsburgh last week and will continue to do so throughout the U.S. and Europe. MPAPPHOTO was there to capture the pure energy of the show and has joined Pittsburgh Music Magazine as a collaborator.

Metal icons MEGADETH are delivering volcanic performances and earning rave reviews on their co-headlining tour with Rob Zombie, which marks the first time the two bands have toured together. The trek kicked off Friday, May 11 in Holmdel, NJ and will include two high-profile rock festival appearances including Rock On The Range and Rocklahoma, where the tour wraps on Saturday, May 26. A list of confirmed dates is below. For additional information on purchasing tickets, visit www.megadeth.com.

Prior to the show, the New York Times proclaimed that “the speed pioneers Megadeth have the decibels to fill the grandiose PNC” and the New York Daily News said, “At last year’s faceoff with Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, the band led by Dave Mustaine offered a set that did both their sub-genre and legacy proud (5/10/12).”

In a review of the first show, Tris McCall of the Newark, NJ Star-Ledger said, “While most of the band’s peers have either slowed down, broken up or switched to a more profitable style, Megadeth presses on, hard and fast as ever. Mustaine is a study in perseverance–and professionalism, too: He recently had to re-learn how to play guitar after suffering nerve damage in his arm. That trauma has left no mark on him–his solos, sometimes taken in harmony with sideman Chris Broderick, are as dextrous, and rapid-fire, as ever (5/13/12).” Theexaminer.com added, “The musicians ripped and shredded their way through riffs and solos with machine-like precision, yet somehow projecting an earnest passion through the notes that speaks to the raw emotion of Mustaine’s songwriting (5/13/12).”

After their tour with ROB ZOMBIE wraps at Rocklahoma, MEGADETH–singer/guitarist DAVE MUSTAINE, bassist DAVID ELLEFSON, drummer SHAWN DROVER and guitarist CHRIS BRODERICK–will head to Europe for shows in Germany, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Czech Republic, England, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Romania, Turkey, Switzerland, Greece, Belgium, Russia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland, then in September will head to South America for concerts in Chile, Argentina and Mexico.

A newly released video for the group’s next single “Whose Life (Is It Anyway?)” can be seen now.. The video is a heavy metal tour de force, depicting youth angst turned violent, resulting in an apocalyptic finale.

The current tour comes on the heels of MEGADETH’s critically acclaimed return of the traveling festival GIGANTOUR, created and curated by frontman DAVE MUSTAINE. Rave reviews poured in for the festival, which also featured MOTÖRHEAD, VOLBEAT and LACUNA COIL. “The return of Gigantour, a nicely curated package tour of heavy metal bands, is just one more step in a great run underway by Megadeth,” wrote the Boston Globe. “It was a smart and well-paced show, one that illuminated metal’s various angles (1/31/12).”

2011 marked the release of MEGADETH’s 13th album, the appropriately titled Th1rt3en. Released November 1 on Roadrunner Records, the album debuted at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock chart. The album also landed on international charts including Top 10 placements in Argentina, Finland, Korea and Japan. MEGADETH also received their tenth Grammy nomination for this project, earning a “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance” nomination for their single “Public Enemy #1.” The “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance” category was, eerily, category #13.

Merchandising Madness: What’s Cool and What’s Tool

Recently, an article from Metal Insider regarding strange merchandise from legendary band Slayer, piqued interest.  Some of the choices were depicted as bizarre and others possibly just intriguing.  It begs the question, “When is the band just pocketing money and when is it actually providing for the fans?”.  Much of this would depend on the individual, thus making for an opinionated debate.

The ultimate gods of merchandising of course are KISS.  It is well known that Simmons and Stanley typically put their names on anything, from coffins to potato heads.  One of our favorites, actually here in the office, just happens to be the Gruntz Dressed to Kill KISS collectibles (shown below).  Still, what makes these collectible over a potato head, or the ultimate collectible, a coffin?

A plethora of wines have been produced lately with mainly classic rock groups as the benefactor.  The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, even AC/DC have signed on to wine their wares.  Vince Neil is no stranger to lending his name to liquor, having a tequila brand and wine label.  Of course, Sammy Hagar made a small mint when selling off his Cabo Wabo Tequila and Maynard from Tool has a very legit wine orchard in Arizona (enough to have a whole documentary about it).

Other oddities include: Durex  marketing their condoms using bands from JLS to Slayer. Rammstein apparently has their own lines of sex toys.  Having seen them in concert numerous times, this actually makes a lot of sense.  Bill Wyman of the Stones endorses a metal detector.  Mastadon have a “horn” to drink from and Motorhead has a beach ball (We must confess this is in the office also- when we think Lemmy we think beach!).

Perfumes, pasta sauces, sodas, energy drinks, if the money is there the bands will come.  The line of action figure type replicas are very collectible and can increase in value rather quickly.  Motley Crue, Lemmy, Slash, Iggy Pop, Ozzy, Hendrix, Morrison, and Metallica are just a few who have been immortalized in plastic.  The bobblehead industry is booming too.  Just “head” on over to Amazon or any number of websites to check out the various bands that are represented.

The bottom line is that consumers want these products.  If they did not no one would be putting the money into manufacturing the trinkets and toys and who knows what.  Let the consumer beware and judge.  If someone loves KISS so much they want to be buried in a KISS coffin, so be it.  As rock n’ roll collectors ourselves, the variety beyond the usual tees and posters is exciting and also an opportunity to laugh.  With the market for song distribution so confusing these days let the bands make the money where and when they can.  And let us put the debate to bed.  Hey, where are my Misfits slippers anyhow?
