“Covered in Ivy”

“From its first snare hit and through until its wobbly, round bass line enters, this is a song for the vivid, deeply hurt dreamers, the ones who haven’t given up just yet but give melodrama and fallow-skinned lonesomeness its full precedence over everything else” – IMPOSE
Jeremy Jay returns after a bit of a hiatus following up his 2011 indie-pop effort Dream Diary (K Records), the left of center songwriter recently reemerged with a new digital single “Covered In Ivy” b/w “Situations Said” showing off a decidedly darker side. The fresh cut tracks are a segment from two years Jay spent in the depths of creative gestation, solitude, and live recording sessions pulling from the melodrama of ‘80s 4AD groups with total awareness and embrace of a European definition of style.

A-side “Covered In Ivy” was recorded live at the tail end of a European tour at Studio Vogue in Paris in the dead of December. Jay exists in fantastic adoration of his influences: the British goth pop eccentricity of Tones on Tail, the introspective poeticism of His Name Is Alive’s debut, Livonia. Feeling a pull towards the unknown, away from the comfort zone of his California upbringing, Jay left the U.S. for Europe four years ago and currently resides in London.
This new brand of pastiche will carry over to Jeremy Jay’s recently announced forthcoming full-lengthAbandoned Apartments which will see light November 12th via his long time home on K Records.
A product of several years spent in a hermit like state and at various self-produced recording sessions split between Paris, London and Olympia, it is studied and wiser, culling its synthesizer tones from late-80s goth pop and touching on something darker than anything else Jay has made to date. For this collection of songs Jay’s characters are full of longing, romance, and regrets, living their lives in bustling late night metro stations. They are vivid and moving. Abandoned Apartments is melodramatic in its emotions, exacting in its details; Jay has taken his time making exactly what he intended, and it buzzes iridescently, full of electricity, somewhere in the darkened distance.
