151a debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and has continued to gain momentum for the better part of a year, having been hugely championed by SPIN, The New Yorker, Bust, Self-Titled, and NPR (who awarded him “Best New Artist of the Year”). Kishi Bashi is currently working on his highly anticipated second album.
Watch this NPR Tiny Desk Concert to get a feel for Kishi Bashi’s violin-based, loop-centric live show:
“a weightless, cartwheeling, electro-pop romp that’s all fizz and no fuss” – SPIN
“such a huge, epic sound” and is “so celebratory you just want to run out into the streets.” – NPR All Songs Considered
“The layers of beautiful sound, homage to Japanese culture and use of violin make 151a a dreamy, pocket-sized symphony, perfect for anyone needing a lift.” – Bust
“A glorious work of avant pop…the songs on 151a are most notable for their beautiful burts of melody and soaring tunefulness” – Under The Radar
“Kishi Bashi was left off our list of 2012′s Best New Artists, an omission that sparked some controversy in the comments. As I mentioned in that space, the dude got my vote, based almost entirely on his live show, which I caught at Joe’s Pub last July. It was an otherworldly, elevating performance. Since then, he’s kinda blown up.” – Stereogum
