“steeped in psyche-soaked proto-metal, gutbucket garage rock and bone-deep 70s blooze…”-Classic Rock Magazine
Psychedelic blues rock band Heavy Glow displays a mastery of confidence and emotive power in their untitled follow-up to the highly acclaimed album “Midnight Moan.” To be released in 2013 under Purge Records and with the addition of a new drummer, the new album is a culmination of everything the band has been working towards since forming in 2008. The finished product flaunts nuances of retro rock through hard-and-heavy guitar tones, bombastic drum-playing and suave bass lines. Front man Mullins injects raw soul into his entrancing vocal melodies and cascading choral harmonies to create a sound that is both informed by the past and undeniably modern.
Heavy Glow started with an Internet ad, drums, and a bass guitar. Hailing from the rustbelt city of Cleveland, Ohio, drummer Jared Mullins moved to San Diego and began posting ads on Craigslist looking for a bass player. Joe Brooks responded. After Jared switched from playing drums to playing guitar and singing, the two formed Heavy Glow: heavy rock with a glow of sensual swagger. The band soon caught the attention of legendary producer and renowned guitarist Stevie Salas with whom they recorded their first EP in just four days at Velvet Revolver’s private studio. “Heavy Glow,” the self-titled EP, was released to favorable reviews and garnered international airplay. FOX’s television series “The Good Guys” played the track “Grinning in the Dark” in its second episode. In 2009, the band signed to Australian record label StockXChange Music Group/Sony Australia and agreed to a publishing deal soon after.
StockXChange Music unexpectedly disbanded in early 2010 without compensating the band for EP sales. Determined to move forward, the band independently recorded “The Filth & The Fury” in one, six-hour live studio recording. The resulting five tracks captured the energy and skill unique to a live performance. Classic Rock Magazine UK distributed the song “Hot Mess” in a sampler CD for its July issue. “The Filth & The Fury” was nominated for Best Rock Album of the Year at the 2010 San Diego Music Awards. Following the album’s success, the band toured throughout the southwestern United States.
“Midnight Moan”, the band’s first full-length album, was independently released in 2011. Recorded in under a week, the nine-track album explored darker and sometimes murky themes but still managed to receive rave reviews. Mullins permeates his soulful lyrics throughout a wide variety of rock subgenres from 60’s psychedelia to 70s AM radio, heavy sludge, and even Delta Blues.
Drummer Andrew Hoffman officially joined the band in March of 2012 after the band’s appearance at SXSW. Adding a tasteful balance of jazz-inspired flourishes and thunderous athleticism, Hoffman’s beats can be heard on the upcoming album.
Fans of every music genre have been pleasantly surprised by the band’s unique sound with radio play in over 22 different countries and countless international press reviews.
The band’s west coast tour from San Diego to Seattle kicks off in January. Following the 2013 album release, the band will embark on an extensive European tour.
