PHILIP H. ANSELMO hasn’t just paved his own path; he’s bulldozed it with his bare hands. His primal, powerful presence led Pantera to Grammy Award nominations, sales of twenty million albums worldwide, legions of diehard fans, and an indisputable heavy metal legacy. Simultaneously, Down carved out a distinct niche with a gold-selling debut and three more critically acclaimed releases. Superjoint made a triumphant return in 2016 and in the midst of everything, ANSELMO joined Scour alongside members of Pig Destroyer and Cattle Decapitation and teamed up with horror icon Bill Moseley for the Bill & Phil project. However, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS speaks to a certain need for him.
Instead of treading the same ground, ANSELMO and his bandmates in THE ILLEGALS, open up another doorway altogether with their 2018 sophomore release, Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue. It’s extreme, abrasive, aggressive, and anthemic. In other words, it’s purely ANSELMO.
Following up 2013’s Walk Through Exits Only, this new body of work hinges on no holds-barred lyrical misanthropy and insurgent instrumental intricacy as it sharpens any and all edges to guillotine precision. “It ain’t pretty,” ANSELMO exclaims. “It’s more straightforward and cohesive to a degree, but it still goes off the rails here and there. We went through it song after song cut and fucking dry. I was in a specific mindset. I wanted to further my endeavors into a genre of music that I adore. As all ten songs blow by, I wanted an unforgiving feel. This is what was on my mind. It’s a recorded capsule of time.”
Following a successful maiden touring cycle for THE ILLEGALS, the frontman hunkered down at his home studio in Louisiana to record what would become Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue in 2014 and 2015. The lineup shifted as Stephen Taylor (Superjoint) transitioned from bass to guitar, Mike DeLeon (Flesh Horder, Being Killed, ex-MOD et al) joined as a guitarist, and Walter Howard (Grieved, Oppressive Force) took over bass duties. Meanwhile, Jose Manuel “Blue” Gonzalez (Superjoint, Warbeast) held down the drums. Through rigorous rehearsals and writing sessions, a framework for the new music took shape as ANSELMO wholeheartedly welcomed the ideas of his cohorts.
“Their creative input is fucking fantastic,” beams ANSELMO. “This is something that was very different from the first record where I was very staunch. I wanted it to be ugly. I was very firm that I was writing every fucking note. The thought was, ‘This is my contribution to ugly music right this second in a heavy metal vein.’ That was great at the time. Walk Through Exits Only made its own little statement that I am a free agent and I belong to no single band. This time, I worked closely with everyone. We tried different ideas together. It made the spirit of this thing come alive even more because of the enthusiasm these guys bring. It enhanced the integrity of the project.”
“Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue hits with all the subtlety of a jackhammer in the forehead. This is unquestionably one of the angriest and heaviest albums of ANSELMO‘s career.” — Exclaim
“An ever-shifting fusillade of extreme groove prog…” — Decibel

“…strong, powerful and ugly…this record has everything one would want from a PHILIP H. ANSELMO project – testosterone-filled, aggressive, no-nonsense metal with attitude… some of the heaviest, most brutal metal he has created to date…” — Metal Nexus

“…an album that is pure mayhem on the surface and sublimely intelligent underneath.” — The Void Report

“…heavy, vicious and angry…a perfect storm of extreme metal chaos…” — Hellbound

“The sheer anger PHIL communicates in his most crushing vocal lines and the mind melting assault of these tracks speaks of a world few of us are truly comfortable with. ANSELMO and the gang are pulling apart societies problems and forcing us to choke on them.” — Two Guys Metal Reviews

“…a brutal album, heavy in attack but chaotic in style and grandeur.” — The Rock Pit

“Every song is full of relentless anxiety, tension, and malice. Seeking solace is not in the cards as the death-tinged hardcore brutality within this album is terrifying. However, there is a bit of a cathartic release that only the tortured vocals of PHIL ANSELMO can provide.” — Metal Wani

High-energy Boston pop punk band Bleacher Days 12/12 at Black Forge

The high-energy Boston pop punk band Bleacher Days will be setting out on tour next month with Riviera (who recently performed at the Warped Rewind at Sea event). The punk package will be stopping in Pittsburgh on 12/12 at Black Forge.

Bleacher Days’ new EP I only Saw True Purpose will be out on 12/8 and was produced by Chris Piquette (Trophy Wives, Lions Lions). You can see a music video for the single “Once Again” here: https://youtu.be/S0IVPoGjdk4. The angst-charged, introspective songs on the new EP are poppy, but still pack enough punch to keep the mosh pits moving. Vocalist Wren Mohammed says the new record “is the product of frustration resulting from our lives and our relationships. The songs are a blunt chronicle of the back end of a 7 year relationship I was in and start to finish, each song is just frustration.

Boston-based pop punk band Bleacher Days has arrived with a new music video for their single “Some Strain of You,” premiering with Idobi Radio. The track comes via the band’s new EP I Only Saw True Purpose that was produced by Chris Piquette (Trophy WivesLions Lions).

The EP as a whole is essentially chronicling the end of a 7 year relationship I was in,” says vocalist Wren Mohammed. “‘Some Strain Of You’ functions as the moment you realize future plans you may have envisioned with someone simply aren’t gonna go the way you planned all this time, while also working as a criticism for someone using substances (be it drugs, alcohol or even an over usage of escapism such as television or video games) to deal with those negative emotions, as well as criticizing your own naivety. Those things, though they may numb the pain, are simply not healthy for you in such large and frequent doses. You’ve got to rid yourself of bad habits for yourself, and no one else.

When asked about the video, Mohammed told Idobi “Honestly the video was kind of spontaneous. We hit up our boy Dan Fried (Just Fly Casual) and sent him the song, not really knowing what we wanted to do with it. He had the idea of shooting the gang in some cool spots. So we brainstormed and just went to some places around Massachusetts we thought we look cool on camera haha. It all worked out because we ended up going places where we all had some memories with certain people that we didn’t exactly want to think about, and we managed to make new memories through shooting the video. So like recording the EP itself, the experience was wicked cathartic. It’s a real good look into who we are as people and how interact with each other. Some of our friends even make some guest appearances in it!

Bleacher Days will be setting out on tour this December with Riviera (who recently performed at the Warped Rewind at Sea event). The punk package will start in Stroudsburgh, PA and end in Attleboro, MA on 12/16 (full list of dates below).

In its first year of hard work, Bleacher Days has made an immediate impact on New England shows, rallying bands together and promoting in person on their way to selling out a 250 cap room with their most recent headliner. A feeling of camaraderie consumes the room when the band takes the stage and the relationships within the band run deeper than the band’s one year age would suggest. Longtime friends, past musical projects, and once abandoned ideas is what brought Bleacher Days together.

I Only Saw True Purpose is available now on Spotify.

Metallica Launches Website for Their Foundation, All Within My Hands and Partners with Starbucks and Spotify for ‘Give Good’ Campaign

In February of this year, Metallica announced the formation of their All Within My Hands Foundation, which is dedicated to assisting and enriching the lives of the members of the communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services. Today, the band has launched the website, www.allwithinmyhands.org to keep fans up to date on the foundation, new activities, and the specific causes being supported. Fans can sign up for the e-mail list HERE to receive updates.

To celebrate the launch of the new website, as part of their “Give Good” campaign Starbucks and Spotify are donating $1 million to be divided between All Within My Hands, Chance The Rapper’s Social Works, and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation. To commemorate the partnerships, starting today (Tuesday, November 28th) limited edition gift cards featuring each artist will be available at 8,000 Starbucks stores throughout the U.S. while supplies last. Visit www.Starbucks.com to find your closest Starbucks store with available gift cards.
Metallica have long taken pride in giving back to their community and have played at many benefit concerts over the years, including the Bridge School Benefit Concerts (appearing three times), the MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concerts, Live Earth, Global Citizen, and most recently Band Together Bay Area. The band has donated proceeds from ticket sales and album releases to various charitable organizations, including Fondation de France‘s Give For France and Gilda’s Club NYC. Additionally, Metallica has met extensively with Make-A-Wish participants and supported local food banks around the world. Lastly, the band launched a partnership with Crowdrise encouraging fans to donate through their site for the chance to win tickets, meet & greets, access to pre-show parties and snake pit passes, and more.

ABOUT METALLICA
Metallica was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield and has become one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 110 million albums worldwide while playing to millions of fans on literally all seven continents. They have scored several multi-platinum albums, including 1991’s Metallica (commonly referred to as The Black Album), with sales of nearly 17 million copies in the United States alone, making it the best-selling album in the history of Soundscan. Metallica has also garnered numerous awards and accolades, including nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.  In December 2013, Metallica made history when they performed a rare concert in Antarctica, becoming the first act to ever play all seven continents all within a year, and earning themselves a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Metallica’s latest album Hardwired…To Self Destruct was released on November 18, 2016 on Metallica’s own Blackened Recordings record label and debuted at No. 1 around the world, selling over 800,000 copies worldwide in its first week. Metallica recently wrapped the North American leg of its WorldWired tour and will continue with the European leg in early 2018.

Anarbor Tour (@Smiling Moose Pittsburgh) 2017: Review and Photos!

words and pix: Abigail McNatt
The local music scene is highly underrated. There are so many different kinds of bands that fall in this scene and are so talented. If I could tell anyone in this city who loves music anything, it would be to attend small shows and listen to bands and artists that don’t have a lot of likes or followers or listens.
One of those bands whose shows I attend quite often (and shoot all the time) is Vertigo. They are a local pop/rock band who play a ton of local shows. They were first on stage at the Smiling Moose on this cold Saturday evening in Pittsburgh. They are a fun band to shoot because you can tell they love what they’re doing and they get the crowd involved as well. I saw a good amount of people in front of the stage bobbing their heads to the groovy music. Overall, their set was very fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend readers to check them out in the link above.
Next on stage was Baltimore pop/rock band, Skyward Story. The previously named band, 3PM, put on a super fun set. Girls went wild for them. Some came from far and wide just to see them play. They interacted well with their crowd and performed many originals but also did Ed Sheeran‘s “Castle on the Hill”. Overall their set was very fun and I enjoyed every second of it. If boy bands are your thing, go check them out!
Going along with the local band theme, next up was pop/punk band from Pittsburgh, Milly. They were pretty cool. Being in the smaller music scene, I was surprised I hadn’t heard of them before. I thought they were pretty good! The crowd was enjoyed it as well it seemed. So if you’re into the local music scene, go check them out in the link above!
The next band, who was also the band touring with Anarbor, was Sundressed. They describe themselves as “emotive punk”. They surprised me because I expected more a more pop/rock sound considering the bands that played prior to them. But they were pretty good. They seemed really into their performance and got the crowd pumped up. So if you’re into the more “emotive punk” type music, go look them up!
Last but not least, the band we were all waiting for… Anarbor. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re considered alternative rock and they’re amazing. They get super into it and the fans were all over the place. They were dancing, singing along, and just enjoying every second they were there. The band had great interaction and put on a wonderful, upbeat performance. So if you haven’t heard of them, go look them up. I provided links to each band above!
Overall, it was a great night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Some of the photos are showcased below and the rest are featured here.

CONCERT REVIEW: GRETA VAN FLEET @MRSMALLS

This review could be VERY easily completed with three words, to be honest.  The night could be summed up as INCREDIBLE, FRESH and ENERGIZING.

I was very excited to get the chance to see and cover Greta Van Fleet. The only thing I wish was that they would have played a bigger venue. They SOLD OUT Mr. Small’s Funhouse in Millvale PA. Rather quickly too. And from what I was told, they turned away quite a few people looking to get tickets the night of the show. This band could have easily packed a bigger venue such as Stage AE or the likes thereof. But we can hope for that the next time they visit Pittsburgh.

The band that consists of brothers Josh Kiszka, Jake Kiszka and Sam Kiszka, and friend and drummer Danny Wagner. The three brothers are musically gifted and will be at the forefront of the music industry for many years to come.

The shows started with a ton of energy and finished the same way.  Josh’s vocal’s while VERY Robert Plant-ish, are BEYOND incredible.  What he can do LIVE is phenomenal. Let alone what he can do on a record. Playing in these smaller venues, there is no taped vocals nor anything mysterious to be done with the sound systems. At Mr. Small’s HE BLEW THE CROWD AWAY with his incredible range and power. I really don’t want to compare Josh to anything that Robert Pant ever did. Many currently are calling them very Led Zepplin-like. However, Josh’s vocals are fresh and more powerful in my opinion. Plus, he plays with his range and ability much more than Robert Plant ever did, so again, I don’t want to compare him to Plant like many have. However, as GREAT of a performer as Robert Plant was, I will compare Josh to him in that regard. Josh kept the crowd in the palm of his hand all night and left them screaming and hoping for more. Black Smoke Rising, Highway Tune and Safari Song were AMAZING. Simply jaw dropping with what Josh can do with his vocal range. Josh’s range and crisp tone were great and he is not showing any signs of wear or tear on his vocals. I hope he takes care of his talent. It is indeed rare and breathtaking to say the least.

Edge of Darkness, Flower Power and When The Cold Wind Blows were equally as impressive. Josh’s blew the roof off Mr. Small’s on Flower Power. Again, his range makes the song.

Jake Kiszka really brought a lot to the table on guitar. He’s young very gifted just like his two brothers. He did some great things on the guitar that only a seasoned very really should be doing. Josh’s other brother, Sam while quiet and mellow at first really stepped out of his shell halfway through the show and shined.  His talent on the keyboards also put energized the show. By the end of the show, Sam was really loosened up and having a great time. With Danny Wagner on the drums and the only one outside the family, he really shined. No real solo, but did have some time where he got to shine on the skins.

The encore brought Highway Song and The Safari Song. INCREDIBLE set enders and the crowd really was into them. There is really nothing more than I can say about this band and the show. If they are putting on the same exact show now on the west coast that they did in Pittsburgh PA, the crowds are getting their money’s worth and telling their friends that they need to see this band and buy their CD.  Which by chance, is being released November 10th. Their new CD will be available on iTunes then and I expect to sell very well and hopefully setting up another leg of an American tour. Hopefully, Pittsburgh and Stage AE are on it.

Nahko and Medicine for the People frontman, Nahko: MY NAME IS BEAR TOUR

BY JAMIE LOVE

Nahko and Medicine for the People frontman, Nahko, released his first solo and very personal album, on October 20th, titled,  My Name Is Bear. To support it, he announced an expansive United States and European tour. On October 24th, Nahko, backed by his Medicine Tribe and childhood teddy named Britches, graced the stage of Mr. Smalls Theater in Pittsburgh and sent the audience on a journey through the earlier years of his songwriting and self-discovery. “So many dear people helped me to write and live these stories…The two summers I spent in Alaska, half the winter in Louisiana and the other half holed in my van in Portland, and then the first year in Hawaii was transformational and pivotal to shaping me into who I am today. Those 3 years before I met my mother would offer a reclaiming of my name, finding a new faith and fever for my own spiritual connection to Creator, and discovering first love. These were just a few of the important discoveries for a young cub set on exploring the world and finding himself amongst the wild.”

Opening acts included songstress Christina Holmes and Spanish Soul Indie Rock group 1,000 Fuegos. My Name Is Bear is Nahko’s second major release only one year prior, in 2016, Nahko and Medicine for the People dropped their third studio album, HOKA via SideOneDummy Records. HOKA, hit number 72 on the Billboard 200 upon it’s released and was awarded “Record of the Year” by the Native American Music Association.

GWAR and DOYLE (Misfits) Bloody Up Mr. Smalls on 10/23 (with Ghoul and US Bastards)

On October 20thGWAR will release a new studio album entitled “The Blood of Gods” via Metal Blade Records.  In support of the new album, your Lords and Masters will leave their arctic slumber and return to the road to cause aural (and anal) devastation across North America.  Joining in the chaos will be Ghoul, Doyle (10/20-11/5), He Is Legend (11/7-12/10) and U.S. Bastards.  The tour kicks off in Richmond, VA on October 20th and runs through December 10th in Detroit, MI.  The tour includes a stop in New York City on Halloween as well!  A complete list of dates can be found below.

Now, we are taking the whole bloody shit show on the road, with the most spectacular, blood-drenched, gruesome, and terrifying rock concert of all time. Don’t miss your chance to sacrifice yourself to GWAR at a venue near you!”

Bohabs! Be the coolest corpse in the pile! Don’t miss your chance to pledge your allegiance to GWAR each night when they rape and pillage your town. Head to https://www.gwarvip.com to take part in “The Lords and Masters VIP Experience”.

The story of GWAR is carved across the history of this barren and hopeless planet, but GWAR themselves are not of this world… their story begins in the deepest reaches of outer space. Long ago, the beings who would become the rock band GWAR were part of an elite fighting force, the Scumdogs of the Universe. For eons, they served as thralls to a supreme being known only as the Master. But one by one, each future member of the band earned a glaring reputation for being an intergalactic fuck-up. And so, they were banished, sent away on a fool’s errand to conquer an insignificant shitball floating in a dark corner of the universe; the planet Earth.  Once here, GWAR shaped the face of the globe, destroying and rebuilding the natural world, and giving rise to all of human history. Aliens to some, gods and demons to others, our erstwhile Scumdogs fucked apes to create the human race, and this fateful unplanned pregnancy would prove to be truly disastrous!

Their new album, “The Blood of Gods” is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers, and the massive battle between GWAR and the forces of all that is uptight and wrong with the world. Along the way, the band challenges the sins of their great mistake, from politics, pollution, and organized religion, to fast food, and factory farming. Humans are shown as what they are; a parasitical disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry. Meanwhile, Sleazy P. Martini, the crooked entrepreneur who discovered the Scumdogs, and has always envisioned them as a sort of horrific boy band, finally managed to convince the group to write a hit song called “I’ll Be Your Monster.” If all goes according to plan, it may be just stupid enough to work!

Of course, “The Blood of Gods” is the first GWAR album without the band’s fallen leader, Oderus Urungus. The title of the album refers to the loss of Oderus. and the struggles and triumphs that produced the new sound of the band. Born of adversity, “The Blood of Gods” is a sonic scar…a question asked and answered…Death cannot kill GWAR. Nothing can. GWAR LIVES MOTHERFUCKERS!

David Archuleta Performs Pittsburgh Oct. 26

David Archuleta Delivers Second EP Entitled ‘LEO’ on August 25

Highly Anticipated New Project Currently Available for Pre-Order Here

Star to Embark on 10+ City Tour in September

Platinum-selling singer David Archuleta is gearing up for the August 25 release of Leo, the second EP from the international pop star. The four new tracks showcase David’s creative use of multiple producers, resulting in a kaleidoscope of colorful, thought-provoking pop, united what’s become his signature positivity, personal and profound songwriting which fans experiences through the release of his first EP, Orion, in May.

David has chosen the constellations theme for the series of projects based upon the upward direction he often looks for inspiration, both literally and figuratively. “I want to get people to look up more, and the stars along with music are some of the best ways I know how to do that,” he explains. “The upcoming album as a whole serves that purpose to get people to look up and for something more, whether that’s looking for God, for a deeper connection to life or finding more of who they are. I’m a huge believer that looking up will always serve a purpose, and we will move forward more filled and stronger.”
The highly anticipated new project is currently available for pre-orders by visiting iTunes. Fans who place their pre-orders will get a copy of the singer’s new single, “I’m Ready,”prior to the official release on August 25.

Leo is a more throwback and stripped-down set of songs,” says David. “I wanted to show strength and that I was taking a stand for myself with these songs. I want my voice to be heard after letting so many other voices and opinions steer my path. I felt the constellation of Leo represented that. Lions can be fierce and strong, but they also have a calmness and relaxed nature [that] I see whenever I watch videos and documentaries with lions in them. I wanted to show that while I am coming forward with strength, it’s not in an angry or aggressive manner. It’s calm, but firmly standing my ground in who I am.”

Of “I’m Ready,” David says, “Change is something that has never been easy for me. I am a very analytical person. I’m always asking myself ‘But what if?’ I hate to say it, but many times my worries get so strong I don’t even dare to move. I’m too afraid that I will mess up and fail. I’ve realized, however, that falling is part of the journey. Joy doesn’t come from avoiding problems, it comes from working through them and getting back up when you fall.”

Rounding out Leo are tracks “Spotlight Down,” “Someone to Love” and
“Other Things in Sight.”
“Spotlight Down” describes David returning to music after a mission trip to Chile and “having a hard time coming back to the idea of being in the limelight of being on social media and performing on stage again,” he says. “I remembered that the reason why I loved music wasn’t to get everyone to watch and adore me, but my favorite part of singing as a little kid in the backyard was that no one was listening. I felt I could be who I really was. Those were some of the moments I felt closest to God. This song goes back to that. Happiness isn’t about how many people are watching you. It’s about connecting to who you really are deep down in your soul, and having the courage to stay true to that.”
David says the raw and sentimental, “Someone to Love, is a “song about how exhausting it was for me to constantly be focusing on myself and being liked by everyone. Being so caught up in myself got me over analyzing and constantly self-critiquing as I looked in the mirror. I got worn out by it, and was conflicted because I was convinced I needed to be selfish to stay higher up on the food chain and be somebody, but knew I needed to change where I was looking. I went on my mission and realized real love comes from forgetting yourself and converting that focus and commitment from negative self-centeredness to positive energy that you get filled up with when you find someone to love, serve and lift up.”

Lastly, “Other Things in Sight,” the singer describes as his “rebellious” song. “It was my song [about] being tired of everyone’s opinion of what I should and what I shouldn’t be doing because according to them, I am getting it all wrong,” he laughs.

“They say I don’t know any better, that I’m naïve and want to put me down until I’m insecure enough to hand my life away to them and to their control. I didn’t want to say it in any angry way. I’m actually not trying to be rebellious, but rather the contrary. I wanted to politely say to back off and let me grow up.”
All four tracks were co-written by David along with the talented tunesmiths listed below.

About David Archuleta
Since launching his career in 2008, when he became the runner-up of American Idol with 44 million votes, Archuleta has found success both at home and abroad. “Crush,” his debut single, sold more than 1.92 digital copies, paving the way for a string of albums that have touched on modern pop, Christian music and holiday favorites. Archuleta has been a familiar face on TV, too — not only on American Idol, whose cast he joined at 16-years-old, but also on shows like iCarly and Hannah Montana. Finally, he made the New York Times’ bestsellers’ list with his 2010 autobiography, ‘Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance.”

Archuleta took a break from the public eye in 2012, when he put his singing career on hold in order to volunteer at the La Misión Chile Rancagua in Santiago, Chile. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Archuleta worked as a volunteer missionary for two years. Upon his return, he began changing his approach to songwriting, going beyond his Top 40 roots to focus on honest, heartfelt lyrics.

Orion unveiled Archuleta’s new sound, mixing his melodies and muscular vocals with stories about his life and recent experiences. Like the constellation that gave the initial EP its name, the August 25 Leo also burns brightly.

R&B and reggae crooner Sammy Johnson will be performing in Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, October 20th! Australian native, New Zealand-bred soulful reggae star Sammy Johnson will bring his positive-centric brand of entertainment back to the United States this fall with the announcement of the Mixed Feelings Tour. Sammy Johnson collides his Polynesian roots with his love for modern jazz and r&b artists like D’Angelo, Amy Winehouse, and Lauryn Hill, which results in a passionate musical hybrid that is undeniably soothing.

Show Details:
When: Friday, October 20th
Where: Rex Theatre
Time: 7:00 PM
Price: $20-$23
Sammy Johnson has remained busy releasing a constant influx of music since his breakthrough self-titled 2014 EP, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Reggae Charts. He has since seen an organic growth as a result of his hard work and dedication to his craft. Since his debut, Sammy Johnson has since enjoyed multiple sold-out performances and large festival appearances. Accompanying the soulful vocalist are musicians Gabriel Miller (guitar), Samuel Ikeda (bass), and Elias English (drums.)
The upcoming Mixed Feelings Tour will take the music of Sammy Johnson into unchartered waters, visiting never-before visited cities and bringing his music to eager audiences. With new music waiting in the wings, even the most diehard fans will enjoy a new experience. Sammy’s goal for this tour is to make each stop a unique and interactive experience, reacting to the given energies rather than forcing uninspiring by-the-script performances so many touring bands fall victim to. With new music scheduled to drop later this month, including a collaboration with tourmate Anuhea, Sammy Johnson is finding his way onto the radars of many. The Thrival Innovation + Music Festival celebrates its fifth year by elevating
both its music and innovation elements to new heights.
On September 27-28, Thrival Innovation tackles Pittsburgh’s emergence as a hub for artificial intelligence and
automation (think: driveless cars and more) with its theme “Intelligence: Humans X Tech” — featuring 50+
speakers and a dozen custom programs, welcoming experts from around the U.S., representing Fortune 500s,
tech giants, startups, and more.
Thrival’s two-day outdoor live music experience once again brings a distinctive blend of 19 national and local
artists to unorthodox ‘venues.” Thrival Music headliners include Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Carnage, GRiZ, Two Door
Cinema Club and over a dozen more acts to perform at the historic Carrie Furnaces on September 29-30.
Two-day and single-day general admission and VIP festival passes are on sale now at thrivalfestival.com.
Grammy-nominated recording artist, Wiz Khalifa, will make his only 2017 hometown appearance in Pittsburgh
after an extensive festival run across the country and through parts of Europe.
Stepping outside of the music realm, Wiz Khalifa will also step into the entrepreneurial spotlight, speaking
alongside other keynote participants at Thrival Innovation’s marquee event at the Carnegie Museum of Art on
Thursday, September 28.
Right on the heels of Pennsylvania’s legalization of medical marijuana, Wiz Khalifa will share the stage with
Marc Ruxin, CEO of Landseye – Privateer, and John Battelle, founding editor of WIRED Magazine to discuss
“High Road” — a talk on the economy and culture of marijuana, as well as the Taylor Gang’s entrepreneurial
ventures.
“Virtually everyone is familiar with Wiz Khalifa the artist, but both Wiz and the Taylor Gang are entrepreneurs
building successful and dynamic ventures outside of music. Their voice is important to not just promote our
innovation economy, but to demonstrate major success stories coming out of Pittsburgh and the Rust Belt,”
says Dan Law, director of Thrival and Vice President of Business Development at Ascender.
Tickets for the Thrival-Carnegie Museum of Art event are only $15 and on sale at
thrivalfestival.com.
Following Thrival Innovation, Thrival Music kicks off Friday, Sept 29 with headliner Logic who’s “1-800-273-
8255” scored #1 song in the country just last week with the moving lyrics and awareness of the suicide
prevention network. Watch Logic’s MTV VMA performance from earlier this month that captivated audiences
across America.

Gearing up for Thrival Innovation + Music Festival headliner Wiz Khalifa will take the field at PNC Park on
Wednesday, Sept 27 to throw the first pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates last home game of the season vs
Baltimore Orioles. Game time is set for 7:05pm tickets can be purchased here.

Hoan formed in 2015 with the intention of exploring sonic terrain without inhibition.

Since then, they went on two north American tours and played over 100 shows in Canada and USA including festivals such as SXSW 2017, CMW, Pop Montreal and M for Montreal.

Their work gives subtle nods to the darker sides of new wave adding an understated melodic intelligence that sometime can remind of bands like Deerhunter and Broadcast.

Their debut release, “Modern Phase”, was released on April 28th 2017 on Fantôme Records.

X-Factor Runner-Up Josh Krajcik @ClubCafe August 26

Josh Krajcik has a show upcoming at Club Cafe on Saturday, August 26. The show is one of the first in support of his recently released album – Oblivion. Tickets are $10. Doors are at 6 PM with the show at 7 PM.

X-Factor Runner-Up (2011) Josh Krajcik is releasing his first collection of original songs since 2013’s Blindly, Lonely, Lovely. All but abandoning the influence of the TV show’s aim for pop stardom in favor of a raw, melancholic, troubadour style of songwriting and storytelling.

Returning to his roots wearing his heart on his sleeve and demons on his shoulder, Krajcik still paints with a voice that sounds both bold and broken.

His latest offering pushes away from TOP 40 and comfortably seats him in the company of contemporaries such as Ray LaMontagne, Jason Isbell and Ryan Adams.

Dayseeker was formed in 2012 by vocalist Rory Rodriguez, guitarists Alex Polk and Gino Sgambelluri, bassist Andrew Sharp and drummer Mike Karle in Orange near San DiegoCalifornia. Rory Rodriguez and Alex Polk were members in a band called Arms Like Yoursbefore forming Dayseeker.

The band released a series of demo’s including the songs What It Means to Be DefeatedCollision.Survive and Resurrect which were released on their debut record as well as two untitled songs.[1] On July 7, 2013 the band got signed to inVogue Records where the band released their debut album What It Means to Be Defeated on October 29, 2013.[2][3] It featured work by Joey Sturgis who mastered the record.[4] On November 24, 2014 the album was re-released.[5] Tom Denney, a former guitarist of A Day to Remember was involved in producing the re-released version of the album. The re-issue features three acoustic tracks.[6]

In November and December 2013 the band toured the United States on a three-week tour alongside Kingdom Of Giants.[7] In April and May 2014 the band was part of the Artery Across the Nation Tour which featured Upon This Dawning and The Browning in the line-up.[8]

Origin[edit]

In January 2015 the band announced hitting the studio to begin recording the follow-up record to 2013s debut album What It Means to Be Defeated with producer Nick Ingram who had worked with Hotel Books and Before Their Eyes in the past.[9][10] On March 9, 2015 it was announced that the album will be entitled Origin and is set to be released on April 21, 2015. The same day the same-titled lead single as well as the pre-orders were announced. The band covered Jealous originally performed by Nick Jonas.[10][11]

On December 23, 2014 the band announced they would be being part on the Hawthorne Heights tour between March and April 2015.[12]After that tour the band will share stage with Silent Planet in April and May 2015 to promote their new album.[13]

Departure from InVogue[edit]

Members Alex Polk and Andrew Sharp departed from the band and in spring of 2016 Shawn Yates, former member of At The Skylines, served as the new guitarist. On December 15, 2016 the band announced their departure from InVogue Records and the signing to a new label, Spinefarm Records. Shortly after they announced a U.S. tour with headliner Silent Planet, along with Ghost Key and Hail the Sun beginning February of 2017. A year after the release of Origin, Dayseeker announced a new full length album set to release in 2017.[

Industrial-Rock Icons PIG @Cattivo 8/12

PIG are setting out on a North America tour. Raymond Watts is the mastermind behind PIG. He is also a founding member of the legendary band KMFDM. They will be on tour with Julien-K (ex-Orgy members) and Ghostfeeder. The tour is in support of their new album “The Gospel” and EP “Prey & Obey”. Below you can find the video for title track of their new EP.

<PÎG> is Raymond Watts, a British musician whose brand of electronic rock is danceable and deadly serious in turn. Watts’s words spring from the well of gallows humour in a world of corruscating cruelty and truth. <PÎG> climbs peaks and mines troughs, and musical genres slide and collide like tectonic plates.

Berlin years
In 1986 Raymond Watts awoke in West Berlin. It was a time of terror and turmoil, in a city so depraved and decadent that the East Germans had walled it in. Watts had cut his teeth on tape loops in London and Hamburg, but inspired by Berlin’s fetid air and his first 8-bit sampler, Watts gave birth to <PÎG> in 1988, when <PÎG> was cut from his belly with a rusty screwdriver in a basement opposite The Wall. The first squeals were committed to tape, and saw the light of day as A Poke in the Eye. Wax Trax! jumped to release it.

A year earlier, in Hamburg, he was bludgeoning the first KMFDM album into shape with En Esch and Sascha Konietzko. He had also helped deliver the sonic slaughter of Einsturzende Neubauten, Psychic TV and most of the Berlin and Hamburg underground, as both live and studio sound engineer, and producer.

After writing the music for the second KMFDM album, Watts then slipped away to tour with Foetus, playing keyboards and guitar.

Praise the Lard
When The Wall collapsed, the party was over. Watts returned to London and <PÎG> albums poured forth: Praise the Lard, A Stroll in the Pork, Shit For Brains, Red Raw & Sore and The Swining. Watts programmed, produced and performed, ploughing a lone furrow until Karl Hyde, singer and sinner with Underworld, came to his assistance on guitars followed by Steve White.

Watts had also developed a taste for all things Japanese. His label was based there, his morals were parked there and <PÎG> had toured there many times. He was soon involved with a highly successful bunch of ne’er-do-wells called Schaft. Their album Switchblade, and a sold-out tour, followed.

Back to Wax Trax!
In 1994, <PÎG> opened for NIN. This led to <PÎG>’s Sinsation album being released on Nothing Records — and then a return to Wax Trax! for Wrecked.

Watts also rejoined KMFDM in 1994, for the <PÎG> v KMFDM EP Sin, Sex & Salvation. On the ensuing album Nihil Watts resumed writing and vocal duties and several heaving tours followed, with Watts orchestrating the chaos from centre stage like a rampant ringmaster armed only with talent and tequila.

Monster
When not on tour, Watts could be found in his Ranch Apocalypse studios in London, working on <PÎG>’s No One Gets Out of Her Alive, Prime Evil, Disrupt Degrade & Devastate and the KMFDM albums Symbols, Attak and WW111. On the album Genuine American Monster, Watts reunited with legendary guitarist Guenter Schulz.

While in Toyko, Watts gave birth to the band Schwein with Sascha Konietzko and the Japanese musicians Sakurai and Imai. The albums Schweinstein, Son Of Schweinstein and a sold-out tour ensued.

After releasing the <PÎG> album Pigmartyr (Pigmata on Metropolis), Watts spent time in London indoctrinating his piglets and initiating them into the parish of the pork. When not leading his children down the path of righteousness, he could be found writing music for fashion and films for Alexander McQueen, Chloe, Marios Schwab, Halston, The Row and others. He also wrote music and did sound design for Punk: Chaos to Couture, the exhibition at the Met in New York.

Savage Beauty
In the final show before his death, Alexander McQueen commissioned Watts and John Gosling, Watts’s old partner-in-crime from Psychic TV days, to embellish the serene instrumental track Inside, from <PÎG>’s Genuine American Monster album. This became the soundtrack to what is seen as McQueen’s masterpiece, Plato’s Atlantis. This show was reprised as the finale of Savage Beauty, the McQueen retrospective that broke all records at the Met in New York and the V&A in London. He also wrote other original music and did sound design for the show.

Last year, in 2015, <PÎG> dipped his trotter in the trough once more, and released both the much lauded <PÎG> v Primitive Race EP Long in the Tooth, and the Compound Eye Sessions: <PÎG> v MC Lord of the Flies (aka Marc Heal, of Cubanate).

The Gospel
The Primitive Race collaboration brought together Watts and Mark Thwaite, of The Mission, Tricky and Peter Murphy fame, amongst many others. Together they set about writing what would become the main column of misery around which the new <PÎG> album, The Gospel, has been built. Watts’ newest partner in swine, Z. Marr of Combichrist fame, shared production and writing duties.

The new <PÎG> album, The Gospel, is a collection of twelve songs of ruin, redemption, resolution and resurrection. Across this tale of grime and punishment En Esch and Guenter Schulz leave their unmistakable trail of greasy fingerprints.

2016 tour
<PÎG> will be alive and kicking across North America this fall, on the American Excess tour. The live band will comprise Raymond Watts, En Esch, Guenter Schulz, Z. Marr and Galen Waling.

KING 810 at Rex Theater on 6/10, Band Drops Controversial Video for “La Petite Mort”

KING 810 will embark on a series of limited engagement live events next month for their latest album, LA PETITE MORT OR A CONVERSATION WITH GOD, which will include a unique performance each night that will captivate its audiences in their intensely personal and often contentious world.

The band recently launched Part 1 of ‘THIS IS KING,’ an episodic documentary piece which gives fans an unfiltered look into their lives and performances. For future episodes of ‘THIS IS KING,’ fans can subscribe to the band’s YouTube.

Also, PHub, the premier online destination for adult entertainment, debuted the NSFW music video for “La Petite Mort.” The clip is the first to incorporate on-screen sex in an 8-minute long music video. The video, which was shot in Los Angeles and directed by the band’s own David Gunn, is a provocative piece of erotica featuring adult film stars Jenna Foxx, Jasmine Summers, Amber Ivy, Lily Jordan, Alex Legend and Jake Jace. “La Petite Mort,” which refers to “The Little Death” (the sensation of orgasm as likened to death), is matched with explicit visuals in the official video conjuring the darkness and desperation of sexuality.

“A lot of the ideas for our videos came together in the song writing process. This one was no exception,” said Gunn. “The record touches on sex in a lot of ways. It used to be that sex and rock and roll went hand in hand, but that archetype has been reconstructed over the years to make way for a safe/tame/boring/politically correct culture, which we have never belonged to. It’s sad that something so inherent and necessary has become taboo, but we have done what we always do and that is to follow the art wherever it must go regardless of how uncharted the territory may be.”

The always provocative band will appear at Rex Theater in Pittsburgh, PA on 6/10.

Award-Winning Artists Dom Kelly and Indigo Girls at Carnegie Lecture Hall Pittsburgh, PA – 5/7/17

Independent Music Award-winning artist Dom Kelly will support Grammy®-winning folk duo Indigo Girls at the Carnegie Lecture Hall of Oakland on May 7. Kelly’s debut album Everything Is Just Enough releases on April 7 through MPress Records and is available for pre-order.

Kelly, drummer and vocalist for the critically acclaimed power-pop band A Fragile Tomorrow, strikes out on his own with his full-length solo debut. Featuring such luminary guest artists as Emily Saliers (Indigo Girls) and Lucy Wainwright Roche,Everything Is Just Enough often echoes the cool indie charm of Duncan Sheik while incorporating the sparkling, sinuous harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel and The Beach Boys.

The album is a pop-folk exploration that shimmers with reflectiveness and emotional honesty. After having spent the past 7 years in recovery, Kelly was ready to come to terms with some of the impactful events that were happening in his life. Within the music he opens up about many complex life situations involving family, mortality, and security. “It was only fitting that Everything Is Just Enough would become the title, as it sums up the meaning behind the album as a whole“, he states.

The title was taken from a lyric in his song “I’ll Whisper In Your Ear”, written as a letter to his mother as she faces the realities of her terminal illness while “12” (featuring Emily Saliers) delves into the depths of addiction, which he states is the single most important thing in his life today.

Confronting one’s demons can also have a positive upside, though, as Kelly demonstrates by weaving a golden thread of liberation throughout the album. The politically charged song “Pie” takes the listener through those personal and even cultural feelings with clever, near-ironic lyrics. “Hailey’s Gone” is a haunting, inspiring tune that was sparked by a transgender fan whose transition story was publicly shared on social media during the process. Kelly followed along and was so moved by his bravery, he wrote the track and shared it with Hailey – now Ben.

An accomplished musician and songwriter from a very young age, Kelly co-founded his band A Fragile Tomorrow in 2003 with his identical triplet brother Sean and younger brother Brendan. They’ve released five albums and toured internationally with artists like Indigo Girls, The BanglesMatthew Sweet, and Antigone Rising while building a loyal fan base. Their last album, 2015’s Make Me Over garnered the band a number of Grammy® pre-nominations as well as an Independent Music Award for their collaboration with folk icon Joan Baez (“One Way Ticket“).

Kelly is touring in support of Everything Is Just Enough and playing select dates with IndigoGirls. A video for the song “12” is also currently in the works, targeted for a Spring premiere.
