On the night of March 27, the one and only GWAR graced Columbus with their
presence for the Gor-Gor Strikes Back tour. Joining them were Soulfly and King
Parrot.
First up was the Australian hardcore band, King Parrot. These guys came out guns
blazing with their high energy and middle fingers to the already packed venue. Their
guitar player treated us to shampoo-commercial-worthy hair whips that were as amazing
as his riffs. At the end of their intense set, the singer came to the end of the stage to
thank the crowd and then showed us the full moon as a parting gift. These guys were a
great way to start the night, so be sure to check them out!

Next up were the metal veterans Soulfly. Fun fact, the drummer Zyon is the son of
singer Max Cavalera! Like King Parrot before them, they hit the ground running with an
energy-filled performance. Their set consisted of old and new material alike and fans
were happy to mosh and circle pit throughout. Soulfly are known as legends for a
reason, but I feel they are a band best enjoyed live, so be sure to catch them at a venue
near you!

Now it’s time for the main event, GWAR. Donned in my best white t-shirt with the word
“PhotoGWARpher” in Sharpie, I was ready to get drenched! Of course, many other
patrons wore the same uniform, but what surprised me was the number of previously
GWAR stained white shirts in attendance. The band wasted no time coming out with
their satirical comedy on current events. One thing the band does a good job of is
attacking an issue vs singling out a political party. They don’t discriminate in their
decapitations or torture of politicians. On this night, we had the pleasure of witnessing
the dismemberment of an I.C.E agent, Kristi Noem (former Director of Homeland
Security), Bill Clinton regarding the Epstein Files, and obviously Trump, just to name a
few. My favorite blood squirting moment came from their giant egg birthing a T-Rex while it
proceeded to attack everyone in the band. GWAR is a band that, regardless of what you
think of their music, you must experience a live show at least once. You’ll quickly realize
why people line up to be as close to the stage as possible, only to be drenched in what
is portrayed as rotten genital fluid. This tour has only just begun, so there are plenty of
opportunities to catch the fun yourself!
