Pittsburgh Event

October 12th Gruff Rhys’ Pittsburgh show at The Funhouse at Mr.Smalls.

Gruff Rhys is a Welsh musician, composer, producer, filmmaker and author. He performs solo and with several bands, including Super Furry Animals who obtained mainstream success in the 1990s. He formed the electro-pop outfit Neon Neon with Boom Bip. Their album Stainless Style was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. He won the 2011 Welsh Music Prize for his album Hotel Shampoo, which was followed up by American Interior in 2014, accompanied by a film, a book and a mobile app. His most recent album Babelsberg was released earlier this year.

About his new album Babelsberg, Pitchfork said: “For all its lavish instrumentation and weighty subtext, however, Babelsberg never overwhelms Rhys’ preternatural gift for writing swoon-worthy melodies. “Limited Edition Heart” and “Negative Vibes” are among the finest, most impassioned songs he’s ever crafted—defiant soft-rock salvos that position a warm embrace as armor against the world crumbling around us.”

Q called it the “best work of Super Furry man’s career” and MOJO described the album perfectly: “Babelsberg…in the Welshman’s fervent imagination a new Babylon on the brink of apocalypse, dominated by an evil Trump Tower-style edifice. With typical perversity, however, the musical soundtrack to this disturbed uber-reality isn’t dark and futuristic; instead, it’s a 10-song trip of charmingly bonkers ‘60s style orchestral pop, in which Rhys restates himself as kind of a Welsh Lee Hazlewood, corny and suave on the outside, really quite off on the inside.”
