Today Sinkane shared a new remix of his latest single “Telephone” by City Slang records labelmate Roosevelt and confirmed the band will make their network TV debut on Conan March 6th, performing “U’Huh” from the acclaimed new album Life & Livin’ It out now (City Slang). Sinkane’s Ahmed Gallab says, “Roosevelt’s “Telephone” remix blew my mind. I’m a serious fan of space disco jams. You can get lost in this remix. It has peaks and valleys. Takes you to outer space and brings you back home safe and sound. It’s the most exciting journey you’ll go on this year!” Listen to “Telephone (Roosevelt Remix)” here: https://youtu.be/B_-3QV3B7Gk
Sinkane —  the New York-based project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Ahmed Gallab, featuring Ish Montgomery (bass), Jason Trammell (drums), Jonny Lam (guitar), and now joined by Amanda Khiri (vocals) and Elenna Canlas (keys and vocals) — also added more North American dates to their full-band headlining world tour, following a “joyous” (Brooklyn Vegan) sold-out show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. The band is confirmed for a sold-out show at London’s The Dome (3/29) and festival performances at Primavera Sound, 6Music, Mountain Jam, End of the Road, and more (full routing below).
Life & Livin’ It has earned widespread acclaim, including from The Guardian, New York Magazine Vulture, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, FADER, NPR, Pitchfork, Magnet Magazine, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and more. The “Telephone (Roosevelt Remix)” follows the videos for the singles “U’Huh” (NPR Music premiere, also featured as the lead track on All Things Considered’s round-up of “2017’s Best Music”) and “Telephone” (FADER premiere, also featured on FADER’s ‘13 Songs You Need In Your Life‘ and on ELLE Magazine’s ‘Best New Songs of February‘). See below for what press is saying about Life & Livin’ It.
Recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, Texas, and once again produced by Gallab with lyrics and help from longtime collaborator Greg Lofaro, Life & Livin’ It draws from the best elements of Sinkane’s previous records: the slinky funk and soul grooves are there, so are the sparkling melodies with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. With basic tracking played together live, the fun and immediacy of Sinkane’s live show is a central feeling of the recordings. The four core members of Sinkane sang and play additional parts on every song, with Trammell contributing lyrics to “Theme from Life & Livin’ It,” and Lam helping with arrangements. Daptone recording artists Antibalas contributed horns.
Life & Livin’ It is the follow-up to Sinkane’s acclaimed 2015 album Mean Love,’ for which the band played 166 shows in 20 countries, and Gallab’s time leading The Atomic Bomb! Band – the highly celebrated 15-piece outfit that played the music of the late Nigerian electro-funk maestro William Onyeabor.
True to its name, Life & Livin’ It is an album about all kinds of experiences. When Ahmed Gallab sings, he sounds unafraid yet vulnerable. But while he once sang of feeling like he was on the planet Mars, Ahmed is now firmly grounded on Earth. He’s no longer searching for his home – he has created a home for himself. There’s a party there, and Life & Livin’ It is playing on the stereo. You are invited.
