In writing the EP, Putnam was inspired by her surrounding environment, from the busy streets of Los Angeles to the ominous Black Hills mountain range in her beloved hometown of
Rapid City, South Dakota. The dynamic of these environments has shaped the sound in this EP to bridge the depth of her lyrics, with opposing themes of loneliness and community, peace and war, and love gained and lost. Tracks like the catchy “
Topical” and “
Boys Do” showcase Putnam’s uncanny ability to write strong hooks and choruses, while tracks like “
You” and “
Phone” embody her gift for pop melodies that songwriters work their entire lives to achieve. Putnam also made an effort to subtly immortalize her home into her music, Putnam recorded the sound of her childhood lake into songs like “
Twuh.”
