Shannon Briggs (ShayBriggs) was born in Wilkinsburg, PA, a small suburb outside of Pittsburgh. Growing up her parents tried to shun her from hip hop music because of its explicit lyrics and derogatory messages. Since Shay wasn’t able to listen to hip hop she decided she would start to write her own music, but instead of rapping about typical rap subjects she would instill positivity within her lyrics so people of all ages and backgrounds could listen. During middle school she spent all of her free time sneaking into the art building to make beats and record songs that she wrote on Garageband. In high school her hobby grew into a passion and she’s now turning her music into a career.
Influenced by her faith in God and some of her favorite artists such as, LaCrae, Big Krit, Eminem, and Iggy Azalea. Shay strives to make her content modern and meaningful. She says, “Don’t get me wrong. I love a good party song to dance and work out to however, hip hop is much more then party songs. I wasn’t designed to be an advertisement for money, chains, cars, and girls. It was created as an outlet for emotion and a tool used to empower the oppressed. It’s time that we bring more of that meaning back to hip hop, particularly through Female MC’s.” Shay now attends school in New Orleans at Loyola University. There she has had the opportunity to perform around the city at venues such as The Dragons Den, Club Ampersand, The Republic, House of Blues , Tulane University, and has opened up for 3D Na’Tee, Black Milk and Nappy Roots.
