From September 25th to the 29th, POP Montreal is bringing the FUN back to Montreal for 5 days of amazing new highs and soaring good times. We’ve already announced some HUGE TIME headlining events, like the revival of the legendary dancehall album Yellowman versus Josey Wales, the mythical Shuggie Otis in concert and at the POP Symposium and, last but not least, the first ever Montreal show of the hit-making machine, The-Dream. We also have amazing new discoveries like Seoul, Jessy Lanza and Foxtrott, and are announcing a slew of new shows today, including headlining performances by Saltland, Killer Mike, Miracle Fortress, Moonface, which will culminate in our raging final party headlined by the monstrous METZ. Yes it’s gonna be like that: rap, dancehall, disco and hardcore bliss.
For those looking for a once in a lifetime, larger than life, local Montreal experience, check out Li’l Andy in 3D at the Théâtre Rialto – Salle Shure. We’d also recommend you check out the super mysterious culinary musical storytelling adventure on wheels with Kid Koala.
We’re super thrilled to announce a series of special concerts at Breakglass Studio, presented and broadcast by SiriusXM Canada. These will include intimate performances by hometown favourites Plants and Animals, Les Sœurs Boulay, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan,Solar Year and more! “We are proud to once again partner with POP Montreal to present an amazing group of bands during the festival,” said Andreanne Sasseville, Director, CCD and Industry Relations, SiriusXM Canada. “We’re also thrilled to have the opportunity to broadcast these performances to listeners across North America.” Tickets for these one-time events are very limited, so be sure not to snooze on them!
Did you think we were done with suprises? Think again! The Q team has added local superstars BRAIDSand Sugar Sammy to the lineup of their POP broadcast. This will be a unique chance to see these artists speak and perform, there are still some tickets left so get in on this quick!
In other exciting news, we’re getting supernatural with Film POP, featuring sidebars on ground-breaking animation and psychedelia, an ambitious slate of high-concept installations (including a commission project through which we commune with the dead!), a salacious roster of the newest music documentaries and much more! Moreover, we’ve got a first-time special treat for all the film poppers, a chance to buy a Film POP pass for only $45! These will be sold in limited quantities and will only grant access to Film POP events.
In addition, a slew of notable special guests will grace the festival, starting with Ian Svenonius, the legendary frontman for Nation of Ulysses and The Make-Up. The author/journalist/DJ/host of VICE’s talk show Soft Focus will be launching his new book Supernatural Strategies for Forming a Rock ‘n Roll Group and screen his short film What is a Group?, followed by a Q&A with the audience. For animation aficionados, a serious nerd-alert is in place for this next event. Video and performance artist Peter Burr will also be in attendance to present a live television show from the future, a project themed around interpretations of “The Zone” from Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Stalker. This special event will showcase works from 20 underground animators, accompanied by original music from lucky dragons and Seabat, and live performances by Burr involving laser beams and a hacked Kinect camera. Teaming up with the POP Symposium, we’re also bringing in writer/producer, Wondershowzen co-creator and PFFR member John Lee. He will be sharing a never-before-seen episode of the series The Heart, She Holler, along with some rare shorts and music videos. He will finish things off with a Q&A awarding prizes for the best and worst questions! Finally, indie renegade director Allison Anders (Border Radio; Gas, Food Lodging, Sex and the City, the L Word) and video/performance artist Kathy Rose will also be among us! So read up on all of Film POP’s events, buy your pass, stock up on that popcorn and and get ready to lounge around.
More big news, Puces POP’s craft fair will open its doors for FOUR DAYS this year! POP shoppers will be able to get their craft fair on, between the Thursday and Sundayof the fest. Fashion POP will return to the Rialto on opening night where 6 designers will take it to the runway to win $1500 worth of prizes courtesy of Le Château, a 4 page editorial in WORN Fashion Journal and a pop-up exhibition at Espace POP, it’s all very fancy. Everyone’s favourite record fair will also be back to showcase a sweet selection of Montreal’s finest vinyl collectors, indie labels and local record stores. This edition of the Record Fair will also feature daily DJ sets by Andy Williams with other special guests and yummy treats by Dispatch Coffee. More details here.
As for Art POP, the 2013 edition has got it all and will showcase an impressive collection of events throughout the festival: music, dance, talks, installations… you name it! For starters, we’re really thrilled to be celebrating the 15th anniversary of Archive Montreal. Having transformed old cigarette vending machines into Distroboto art vending machines and put together the popular Expozine art fair, Archive Montreal has successfully encouraged artist DIY culture, by offering them opportunities to directly reach diverse audiences. To celebrate these great accomplishments, POP Quarters will host an Expozine reading room, a Distroboto machine and must-see exhibit of Archive Montreal’s massive collections of local art, poster art, zines and ephemera.
Speaking of local artists, Montreal’s do-it-all photographer, filmmaker, artist manager, video installation artist and all around sassy lady Andi State will exhibit her most recent work Lost Portraits. This project is a site-specific video installation, through which she will examine the art of portraiture and explore places and objects that have been abandoned or have languished past their prime. The video will be running overnight in Espace POP’s front window. Everyone should also check out Music Videos A-Z, a looping installation of music videos by Montreal bands, a cool way to absorb a part of the city’s history. There’s so much more of Art POP to be discovered, so be sure you make a point to pass by POP Quarters in the daytime!
Then there’s the POP Symposium which is taking the concept of “open discussion” to a whole new level this year. For the first time, CBC’s Cinq à Six will record a selection of panels for future broadcasts. “POP Montreal has become known as the showcase for local and international up-and-coming artists and musicians,” said Meredith Dellandrea, Program Manager, Arts and Music, CBC Quebec. “CBC is proud to participate in and support this Festival.”
Panels will include The Critics: “How You Gonna Be a Tastemaker When Mama Bird Chews The Food For you”, co-presented with the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, an exclusive talk with some of the industry’s most distinguished critics: Glenn O’Brien of Andy Warhol’s Factory (BOMB Magazine, Art Forum, High Times, Harper’s Bazaar, Madonna’s Sex, and GQ), Andrew “Noz” Nosnitsky (The Fader, The Wire, Pitchfork, XXL, NPR), as well as Sylvie Fortin (Art Press and C Magazine), recently named Executive & Artistic Director of la Biennale de Montreal. Cinq à Six will also broadcast It Just Sounds So Funky: Arrangement and Performance with Bernie Worrell, Fred Wesley and moderator Josh Dolgin and When Do You Say No? Defining a Career (A Conversation about Artist Management), so tune in and nerd out!
We’re also giving fans of Baz Luhrmann a chance to get a sneak peek at the stories and secrets behind one of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time. Co-presented by Third Side Music, The Grand Sounds of The Great Gatsby will present some of the people behind the extraordinary four year production, uniting Montreal’s most charming turntablist Kid Koala, close collaborator to Luhrmann, Anton Monsted (music supervisor and co-producer for The Great Gatsby), Darren Higman (Executive VP of Music at Warner Bros Studios L.A.) and Licensing Representative, Lysandra Woods (Third Side Music). There are many more exciting events to talk about, be sure to read about them first!
To conclude all this greatness, Kids POP is tearing down the house with some awesome FREE events for everyone. Kids POP, Don’t Stop! Annual Party, Record Yourself!: DIY Digital Recording, another edition of the Monster Team T-Shirt Workshop and a maze decorating BBQ party. Say whaaaat? That’s right, more of that stuff here.
