In 2011, cult director and Dog Day co-founder Seth Smith locked himself in the basement of his rural home to shape what would become his award winning feature film Lowlife. At the same time, he crafted a complex soundtrack, using mostly a borrowed tuba, sheet metal, a magician’s saw, and a few broken guitars. Underscoring the film’s murky storyline of a slug-licker’s euphoria and eventual undoing, Smith’s soundtrack also tells an abstract tale of darkness and confusion where shadows lurk in sonic ooze and demons dance in submerged tone.
This soundtrack release comes on the heels of Lowlife’s successful film festival run. The DIY feature premiered to a sold out audience at Fantasia in Montreal and went on to win the audience award for best feature at the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax. In late 2012, Lowlife also played in twenty four cities in one weekend, reaching every province and territory in Canada. Screenings continue to happen across North America. The Lowlife film will be released online via download later this fall, followed by the new Dog Day full length, scheduled for release in December 2013.
Lowlife is being issued on September 10th as a limited edition cassette with a download code. Both the cassette pre-order and digital version are available now from Fundog Records.
Recent Praise for Lowlife
“Lowlife often defies narrative logic, linear plot development and basic storytelling presumptions to achieve a deep and terrifying surrealism that echoes—and sometimes surpasses—the work of David Lynch and Luis Bunuel.” ATLANTIC FILM FESTIVAL
“Lowlife is the feel-bad hit of 2012” – VICE

“A shiver-inducing… mudsploitation flick” – WEIRD CANADA

“A hefty dose of horrific imagery and surrealism” – BEYOND HOLLYWOOD

“A film that defiantly resists categorization or even a simple plot synopsis, this experimental horror effort evokes the spirit of David Lynch by way of William S. Burroughs, with a little of Lars von Trier shaken over for flavor.” – HORROR 101 with DR. AC

“A chaotic labyrinth, Lowlife seeks inspiration from extreme narcotic-induced delirium to deliver unconventional visuals that recall Eraserhead.” – FANTASIA

Lowlife Synopsis
A mysterious wanderer going by the name of Asa appears to our heroine, Elle. She quickly trades in her humdrum life as a failing tubist to be swayed by this man’s strange charms. But love soon turns to hunger as she falls in with Asa’s psychotropic slugs—living drugs so wild they distort and even alter reality. Elle and Asa binge on the slugs for a number of days, their experiences becoming increasingly intimate and bizarre. Through an escalating series of slime-drenched mishaps, the couple eventually find themselves marooned on a mysterious island where an omniscient canine watches over an epic battle of body and soul.
