Zula is a psychedelic pop band from NYC, co-fronted by cousins Henry and Nate Terepka. Their songs are melodic and spacious, inviting the listener to enjoy a hypnotic experience apart from the normal flow of time. Strong pop sensibilities collide with dance and funk influenced rhythms to create an experimental but accessible sound that is clearly evident on their mature new recordings.
“Twin Loss” is the lead single from Zula’s forthcoming debut album, which is due out this fall via Inflated Records. In advance of their first LP, the quartet will release the Twin Loss EP (digital only), featuring the album single, along with two non-album bonus tracks, “This Thick” and “Stealthlock,” that were recorded during the same sessions at a church outside of Ithaca, NY. “Twin Loss” flows like clockwork; tight, syncopated grooves and Nate’s wistful yet confident voice provide a perfect representation of what to expect on their debut.
About “Twin Loss”: There is a theory that the death of a twin before birth can create a lifelong feeling of longing and incompleteness in the survivor. Some psychologists believe that cellular memory transmits these feelings even if the twin died shortly after conception and was never detected. Those suffering from “twin loss” will look for their missing half in romance, cyclically repeating the separation when the spiritual void remains unfilled. The track is a tender murder fantasy, a narration of complete surrender toward the killer, justified by a longing to transcend life and merge with one’s true counterpart.
