Dark For Dark releases their anticipated debut album, Warboats, on Tuesday, May 21. Fronted by Rebecca Zolkower (The Prospector’s Union, Klarka Weinwurm, Dance Movie) and backed by the ethereal duo of Jess Lewis (Cactus Flower, Hymm) and Mel Stone (The Heavy Blinkers, The Prospector’s Union), Dark for Dark has hewn an immaculate folk album from the lofty emotions that loom tall over our daily lives.
“The purity of these harmonies could stand defiantly against any storm. A ray of sunshine that could slice through fog, winds, torrents of rain. A warmth that somehow even makes goodbye feel comforting.” – Herohill
At the core of Warboats sits Zolkower’s delicately strummed tenor guitar. Filled gently by mandolin and banjo (Liam Finney), lap steel (Kris Pope), baby grand (Jason Michael MacIsaac), and french horn, the compositions come to life with a surety and purpose, with a sting of earnest emotion. Adorned by the trio’s unparalleled vocal harmonies, the stories inside the songs are straightforward and intrepid; they travel from birth to death, atop weltering, war-torn harbours, through gardens in springtime and abandoned buildings in decay.
Dark For Dark have created a record of heart and spirit in the simplest of terms to remind the listener that, even stripped to their most essential elements, heart and spirit are never all that simple. Warboats is built from basic materials, making it an immediate and accessible experience, and with an abundance of care and craft, so that it can be returned to over and over as a source of comfort and understanding.
