For over 35 years, The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble (www.pnme.org) has performed innovative and compelling new music for an ever growing audience in Pittsburgh. Under the direction of artistic director Kevin Noe, PNME produces a four-week summer season at Pittsburgh’s City Theatre each year that sets memorable music in a unique context utilizing film, drama, and many other theatrical media, performed by top-class musicians from around the world. Our talented ensemble brings new works to life in a beautiful way, not only exposing listeners to new types of music, but in many cases allowing audiences to meet the composers in person.

For our 2013 season we are commissioning a new work from composer Ted Hearne. As comfortable in operatic and orchestral works as in rock and choral music, Hearne’s compositions are socially engaging, exploring the complexity of contemporary experience with visceral power and raw emotional beauty. His Katrina Ballads, a modern-day oratorio with a primary source libretto, offers a searing portrayal of the media’s take on Hurricane Katrina. Katrina Ballads was awarded the 2009 Gaudeamus International Composers Award from Music Center the Netherlands, and the recording, on New Amsterdam Records, was named one of the best classical albums of 2010 by Time Out Chicago andThe Washington Post. It’s also the work that Ted submitted to win our own Harvey Gaul Competition.

PNME is turning to Kickstarter to engage a much wider audience in our latest commissioning project. Your donations will support …

  • Ted’s composition of a new work,
  • PNME’s innovative staging and production of the work at Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, and
  • Two nights of performance by our world-class musicians.

Commissioning new works is one PNME’s most important activities. Be a part of the process with us and help us to not only create a wonderful music experience for you and our listeners, but to advance the field and artform of new music.

PNME is a 501c3 organization. Please visit our website at www.pnme.org for more information.
