Last week, Secretly Canadian released the second full-length album, Oak Island, from Nightlands, the solo project of Dave Hartley. Oak Island is a brilliantly layered affair, offering distorted, silver-voiced melodies wrapped in the warm sounds of 70s AM gold. Yesterday, ArtInfo published an interview with Dave in which he explains the songwriting and recording process for the album. Alongside this, they debuted three different versions of one of Oak Island’s standout tracks, “Nico,” including the vocal only and instrumental versions of the song. Vocal only and instrumental versions of the album are available as part of the deluxe version of Oak Island, which also includes the album on LP and CD, the “All the Way / Buggin’ Out” 7″ and a Nightlands’ poster.

“I started writing Nico right after my nephew was born. He was two before I finished it. I wanted it to be a ballad and a lullaby, and lyrically it remains so, but the sonics turned into a magic carpet ride through various stages of a dream: surreality, full-bore psychedelia and, at times, borderline nightmarish disorientation. I didn’t hold back with the overdubbing, there are hundreds of voices on this song, and many are warped using tape-speed manipulations. I’m really proud of it and how strange it is.” — Nightlands

“So it goes on Oak Island, 35 minutes of romantic and robotic soft rock, a crush mixtape for the Uncanny Valley.” – Pitchfork

“Nightlands investigates cool niches like psyche-folk or deep house, all the while embracing wimp rock and anthemic cheese of the ’70s and ’80s by fusing Mike & the Mechanics pleasantries with acid-seared solo blues of Syd Barrett.” — SPIN [5 Best New Artists for January]

“Oak Island is full of a shimmering optimism, a bittersweet but ultimately hopeful wistfulness.” – Philadelphia City Paper

“a gauzy journey through echo-y vocal harmonies and gently stirring melodies.” – Philadelphia Inquirer

“Nightlands crafts the kind of music that feels intimate and deeply personal, even as it sprawls into otherworldly realms.”
— WNYC Soundcheck’s “Check Ahead” series
