Watch Nightlands’ “I Fell In Love With A Feeling” Video

This week marks the release of Oak Island, the sophomore album by Nightlands, aka Philadelphia-based Dave Hartley. Ten-songs about sadness and love, Oak Island is an album that stands on its own, shying away from obvious referential treatment. Throughout, distorted, silver-voiced melodies wrapped in the warm sounds of 70s AM gold combine to conjure those feelings that tide in and out of you when recalling the past. To celebrate Oak Island’s release, we share with you the “I Fell In Love With A Feeling” video, premiered this morning via Pitchfork. Connecting to the album’s consistent visual and aural aesthetics, director David Kessler tells the story behind this video:

“Nightlands’ music seems to me to capture a very human existence in a post-human form within a future landscape. Directly after Dave Hartley’s live rescoring of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ we were thinking of ’60s and ’70s sci-fi, soft cover book jackets, Syd Mead and futurist design and architecture. There is clearly some inspiration from ‘Starman’ and ‘Terminator 2′ thrown in there as well.”

In addition to his tireless work in support of Nightlands and as the supreme bassist in The War On Drugs, Hartley has another side-project on the go. Over the last week, he’s been spearheading the rising LetBonnerShoot campaign to get fellow music/sandwich-lover Matt Bonner of the San Antonio Spurs into this year’s NBA All Star Three-Point Shootout. Eva Longoria is on board. Sign the petition and help the Red Rocket prove his prowess.

Nightlands will tour North America with Efterklang in March. Dave will play electric 12-string guitar and will be joined by Anthony LaMarca on trap kit, Eliza Hardy Jones on Wurlitzer and Jesse Moore on synth.
