In August of 2012, Brooklyn based electronic label & collective Trouble & Bass mysteriously vanished leaving behind only a grim image of their logo on a tombstone (even appearing on a wall in Brooklyn). People were left wondering exactly what had happened to the label who remained silent on the matter. Fact Magazine, Mixmag, Clash Magazine and other blogs immediately began covering the story asking the question: “Is Trouble & Bass over?”

After a month of silence, Trouble & Bass has returned to life announcing a new approach and direction for their music and lifestyle. Accompanying their return is a video collaboration with UK based video artist CRIM3S and a letter from Luca Venezia (Drop The Lime) discussing their month long absence and resurrection:

“”I know I am deathless. No doubt I have died myself ten thousand times before. I laugh at what you call dissolution, and I know the amplitude of time.” – Walt Whitman

Back in the summer of 2006, I started Trouble & Bass as an outlet for the musical and visual ideas I wanted to share with the world. The idea was to combine influences from different times, scenes, and genres into something new. Something fresh. Something that would revitalize dance music for us.

We grew up inspired by musicians and visual artists who took risks and stayed real, outlaws who refused the obvious, visionaries who weren’t scared to follow their weird visions. In this spirit, the crew was born.

Six years later, we remain inspired by the same renegade vibe. We’ve exposed new artists to the world, created trends in music and fashion, and traveled back-and-forth across the globe spreading the gospel of Trouble & Bass. We have always done exactly what we wanted, when we wanted, without hesitation. We’ve done things right and we’ve done things wrong, but we’ve done everything with passion. Along the way, we’ve created our own space, our own scene. Some might say we’ve created our own genre.

But the bigger the electronic music scene has grown, the more limited it’s started to make us feel. We’ve found ourselves lost in a battle with all that is personal and real about the music business. Sound palettes and formulas have become monotonous and routine, dance music endlessly imitating itself. Everything is losing the edge and soul that the electronic music pioneers taught us.

We’ve been growing as individuals and as a culture, and we felt there needed to be a change in our direction as a label. We needed an awakening. So we died.

In September 2012, we are reborn, fresh and ready to venture onto a new path. We’re expanding our palette even further, releasing everything we love (but not only club music). T&B will reflect the depth of what we find exciting in music and art, making new connections while referencing our legacy in underground dance music.

As artists, it’s our duty to manifest, share our crazy ideas, and influence the next generation to continue. We are inspired by all those who came before us that led us to believe in and pursue this music, as well as the new talent that keeps us pushing forward. This is not just an explanation—it’s a love letter.

We invite all the troublemakers who have supported and believed in us from day one to continue on with us in the next phase of Trouble & Bass. Together we have and will forever carry on because we love this music that made us.

Thank you to those who have been here with us for 6 years—we look forward to another 6 and beyond.”
