“For this, you don’t need perfect pitch or a lyric sheet: Pinkwash makes music in the key of catharsis. “Collective Sigh” is the Philadelphia duo’s first full-length record. It has 10 tracks but feels like one long double action of anguish and stomp. It suggests post-post-hardcore, or maybe punk-prog, with the punk first.“ – The New York Times
” …there’s an ecstatic pulse that guides their frantic, id-exploding punk rock.” – NPR
“The resulting, bittersweet insanity [of “Longer Now”] lands somewhere between early-aughts post-hardcore and Lightning Bolt-style noise.” – Pitchfork
“The album is a reflection of the transition between the pain of death and the looming feeling of sadness that remains.” – Philadelphia Inquirer
“impulsive, beautiful punk” – Stereogum
Philadelphia prog-punk duo PINKWASH have released their critically acclaimed full-length debut record, COLLECTIVE SIGH on Don Giovanni Records. In celebration, the band has unleashed an artfully trippy video for album cut “GUMDROP” which premiered with AV Club today. Watch the “GUMDROP” videoHERE and we encourage you to post/share.
Comprised of long time friends Joey Doubek and Ashley Arnwine, the band has delivered a dark, durgy and deceivingly sensitive collection. While previous releases represent anger and frustration, COLLECTIVE SIGH provides a process of coping for vocalist Doubek, whose powerful delivery—from a high-pitched scream, as if he’s on the verge of cutting out, to a strong-trained melody—is one of a kind, undeniably unique.
Residing in Philly, PINKWASH came of age in DC and the political nature of their message is tangible. The name PINKWASH refers specifically to a type of marketing that capitalizes on the suffering of those with breast cancer and aims to draw attention to a corrupt system. After Joey’s experience of being the primary caregiver to his mother who died of breast cancer, and Ashley being his friend through that time, the name seemed appropriate. The name is both political and personal, just as Joey’s lyrics are on PINKWASH’s new LP.
