Vieux Farka Touré’s new album, Mon Pays (out now on Six Degrees Records) has been receiving strong press accolades, with Rolling Stone picking it as a “Summer Must Hear Album” and calling it, “A record that pays homage to the beauty and culture of his country as a whole.” Vieux has just wrapped up the first leg of his North American tour and is now set to return to the US for 13 more shows (more to be announced).

The album title Mon Pays translates as ‘My Country.’ This predominantly acoustic undertaking had been planned before the Mali invasions began. Inspired by his work with Israeli pianist and vocalist Idan Raichel, Touré initially went into a Bamako studio to honor the acoustic blues tradition of Northern and Southern Mali. Since that time, Mon Pays transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation.
The conflict in Mali includes a ban on music and a resurgence of slavery. The song “Peace” (which video premiered recently on rollingstone.com) is directly inspired by this situation. The instrumental gem features Sidiki Diabate’s (son of Toumani Diabate) kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Touré’s spectacular guitar work.
Vieux has also started a foundation to give back to Mali (http://amahrec-sahel.tumblr.com/about). AMAHREC is apolitical, non-denominational and non-profit. It is dedicated to addressing the problems of rural self-empowerment. It is open to all people and organizations willing to contribute towards achieving the goals of the association, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or religion.
Vieux returns to North America in October for another wave of shows on the East Coast. Don’t miss what the Los Angeles Times observed, “Vieux has earned the title “the Jimi Hendrix of Sahara… Whether through absorption or accident, tones throughout the evening suggested guitarists ranging from Robert Fripp of King Crimson and Andy Summers of the Police to Jimmy Page, John Lee Hooker and Pat Metheny.”
