WATCH THE VIDEO FOR “MEAN MAYBE”

In this modern age of hacking, whistle-blowers, and metadata, it’s easy to forget that being a spy used to involve surreptitious hand-offs, coded messages, and tailing your adversary around busy city blocks. Yellowbirds bring it all back in their new video for “Mean Maybe,” which premiered today on Paste Magazine. Shot on a Lomokino, a hand-cranked 35mm film camera, by Sarah Graves, wife of main Yellowbirds Sam Cohen, the video tells a story of intrigue and espionage, as a Gene-Hackman-esque spymaster screws over his accomplices.  Shot entirely in New York’s Chinatown, the location sets a perfect backdrop filled with colors and lights that create an air of mystique around the roguish carryings-on. Their new record, Songs From The Vanished Frontier,is out now on Royal Potato Family.

PRAISE FOR SONGS FROM THE VANISHED FRONTIER

“[Songs From The Vanished Frontier] exhibits the creative output of a musician who has managed to refine [his] formula…resulting in some of the most beautifully lush, folk-flavored indie rock released this year.” – Blouin Art Info

“Second albums are fraught with peril for many musicians, but not for Sam Cohen” – Rolling Stone

“Restraint rules on the record but there’s beauty aplenty…positively dreamlike” – Consequence of Sound

a slice of dirty psych-pop that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The song’s shambling vibe nicely compliments the song’s title; charming,  laid-back tracks like this are often the product of said promising young men engaging in a bit of midsummer slacking.” – Pitchforkon “Young Men of Promise”

“I hoped for the best from the band’s second full-length, and Cohen and company have delivered.” –The Stranger
