LISTEN TO “IF IT SPEAKS” AND WATCH NSFW VIDEO FOR “SERVANTS”
Hospital Ships, Lawrence, Kansas’s favorite sons of soaring, guitar-driven Americana, are returning with their second album, Destruction In Yr Soul, which is out June 18th on Graveface, and it’s a towering achievement. There are driving anthems, slow-building and cascading epics, and tender, fragile-as-ash odes populating the new record. We’ve already shared the first track off the record, the regenerative “Come Back To Life,” and now we’re extremely excited to share two more highlights off this stunning record.
First up is “If It Speaks,” a song that simultaneously recalls the Midwestern guitar heroesBuilt to Spill and Seattle’s Sunny Day Real Estate. It begins from nothing, each musical component being added like an ingredient, until it finally builds to an exciting and undeniable plateau. Pitchfork premiered the track today, and says “The song’s sound world is comprised of towering guitars and a frail voice whispering at its center, which tells indie rock fans a familiar story of Built to Spill, Mercury Rev, the grandeur of Midwestern loneliness. It’s a timeless sound when done right as it is here…”; give it a listen.

Also premiered today was the lush, beguiling, and totally NSFW video for the epic songs“Servants,” premiered today by WNYC Soundcheck. Hospital Ships’ songwriter Jordan Geiger has this to say about the video:
“Servants is a collaboration between Hospital Ships and artist Andy Byers, my childhood friend and bandmate from Minus Story, best known for his collaboration with Isabella Rosselini on ‘Green Porno.’ My initial inspiration for the video was a comment Swans drummer Thor Harris made to me about the Vikings’ concept of heaven being a place where feasting, f*cking, and fighting to the death took place every day until the ultimate dissolution of the soul into nothing. In the video, Taylor [Holenbeck, guitar] and I don costumes and partake in a similar ritual. We were influenced by creation myths of various cultures, as well as the video stylings of Tim and Eric [of Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job!]. We were helped tremendously by The Invisible Hand Gallery and the KU Film Department. The video was edited by Rachel Helling of QBF Productions in Kansas City, MO.”
