Brooklyn duo Pearl Necklace (Bryce Hackford and Frank Lyon) are set to release their debut record, Soft Opening, on February 26th via Smalltown Supersound. It’s a lush, popping-and-hissing amalgam of styles, from the minimal techno of Cabaret Voltaire to the musique concrete of Pierre Henry to the proto-turntablism of Christian Marclay. It even features guest appearances by Smalltown labelmate Arp and Andrew VanWyngarten of MGMT. They previously shared “Did You Feel It?” ft. Arp, which XLR8R said “conjures imagery like a walk on the beach with its oceanic percussive touches.”
Speaking of XLR8R, the electronic music arbiter has seen fit to premiere a new track by them today, entitled “Why Toto?,” a crunchy, Rorschach-like track that pulls between two rival sensations, one real, the other expected. Among many others, it features samples culled from Ingmar Bergman films. XLR8R says it “unfolds at a slow, relaxed pace, taking its time to build up its hushed guitar strokes amid bubbling samples, a displaced organ, and various layers of fuzz sliding over the top of it,” and the track “reveals Pearl Necklace to be a versatile group whose playful, patient backdrops can survive with or without an obvious beat.”
