Two legendary metal bands graced the Roxian’s stage last Thursday, February 1, 2024. Both bands have similar situations yet completely different and distinct styles.
After two solid opening sets from Orbit Culture and Gates to Hell, the legendary Fear Factory banged out nine song set in rapid succession. Forming in 1989, the band has seen many personnel changes. In fact, the only original member is the guitar—Dino Cazeres. Still, the newer members continue to release music, despite lawsuits, and have explored more than the industrial metal they are known for. Their set was more of a straightforward thrash metal for lack of a better description. Speaking with some of the audience, they were pleasantly surprised by how tight the band was and the lack of industrial-style metal.

Machine Head has been around since 1991 and has remained the baby of Rob Flynn, guitarist and vocalist. The band has also had tumultuous times that have seen members come and go. They also played in the groove metal and nu metal genres, but have consistently been a true thrash metal band. There is no denying that Flynn is the heart and soul of the band and that is for good reason. His vocal and guitar abilities match perfectly and the band he surrounds himself with are masters of their instruments.

Wacław “Vogg” Kiełtyka, lead guitarist, is of particular note for his prowess on guitar and showmanship. The technicality throughout the 12-song set is beyond impressive and the sound at the Roxian showcased this very well. The songs “Halo” and “Locust” were highlights from the album Unto the Locust that some would argue is their White Album. Of course, the audience showed particular enthusiasm during “Slaughter the Martyr” and “Davidian” as well. It is safe to say Rob Flynn will continue to spit out fantastic metal for a long, long time.
