NIGHTLANDS ANNOUNCES SPRING TOUR IN SUPPORT OF OAK ISLAND
WATCH NEW VIDEO FOR “BORN TO LOVE”
Nightlands, aka Philadelphia’s Dave Hartley, aka bassist of The War On Drugs, part-time NBA scribe and activist (see #LetBonnerShoot), and full-time pinball enthusiast, just completed a month-long tour with Efterklang in support of sophomore album, Oak Island. Today, he announces his first headlining tour and shares the video for “Born to Love,” directed by She Policeman. Continuing on with the silver man theme, the video is pulled from six hours of random footage taken by Dave with an old VHS camcorder while his silver makeup was being applied for the shooting of another video. He gave the cassette to the director, who ran with it, apparently inspired by Andy Warhol and the song, itself. Watch it below and catch Nightlands in select cities in May & June. Songs new and old will come alive in varied arrangements with Dave on electric 12 string guitar, Anthony LaMarca on trap kit, Eliza Hardy Jones on Wurlitzer and Jesse Moore on synth.
Additionally, those in Pittsburgh can watch Dave compete this weekend, April 12-13, in the Professional & Amateur Pinball Association’s 2013 Match-Play Championship, alongside four-time world champion Bowen Kirens and Pinball champion/former ’76 Todd MacCulloch, both of whom personally invited Dave.

“So it goes on Oak Island, 35 minutes of romantic and robotic soft rock, a crush mixtape for the Uncanny Valley.” – Pitchfork
“Nightlands investigates cool niches like psyche-folk or deep house, all the while embracing wimp rock and anthemic cheese of the ’70s and ’80s by fusing Mike & the Mechanics pleasantries with acid-seared solo blues of Syd Barrett.” – SPIN [5 Best New Artists for January]
“a gauzy journey through echo-y vocal harmonies and gently stirring melodies.”
– Philadelphia Inquirer
“Nightlands crafts the kind of music that feels intimate and deeply personal, even as it sprawls into otherworldly realms.” – WNYC Soundcheck‘s “Check Ahead” series
“dreamy, sonic experiments.” – LA Weekly
“there’s an ever-present dreaminess and nostalgia . . . ” – Chicago Reader
“the album evokes the California soft rock of the 1960s-think the Association or the Mamas and the Papas-layered over chaotic percussion, horns, and noise. The harmonies sound like a box of pastel sweets, but don’t be fooled: Underneath them are an ambitious sense of experimentation and, at times, surprisingly dark lyrics.” –Portland Mercury
“a gorgeous and triumphant little record, with rubbery bass and silly beats casting delightfully light grooves beneath cascading harmonies and tessellated horns.” – Indy Weekly
