Tony Lucca and Derik Hultquist team up to hit the road together this fall// 9/28 @ClubCafé

Nashville performers Tony Lucca and Derik Hultquist are planning a 13-date tour together this fall, including stops in the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest. (See below for full tour schedule.) The tour kicks off in Decatur, GA on September 19th and wraps in Nashville on October 7th. Tickets for these shows are on-sale now

Says Lucca about the planned outing: “I first saw Derik on YouTube, actually. Needless to say, I was quite impressed. We met for coffee to talk about touring and things just seemed to fall into place. Personally, I like touring with someone whose music I’m not entirely familiar with as it really is the best way to get familiar with it. I’m really looking forward to doing just that.”

Says Hultquist of the tour pairing: “I can’t say enough about how excited I am to hit the road with Tony this fall. He has a stellar voice and I feel lucky to be a part of this tour. I know we’ll get a chance to share the stage a few times – I only hope I can keep up.”

About Tony Lucca:  Nashville-based singer-songwriter Tony Lucca spent last year focusing on his catalog, and he hit the road for an extensive cross-country run with Alex Dezen (of The Damnwells) and Christian Lopez, as well as an outing to the West Coast and Texas with Tyrone Wells. Lucca also celebrated the 10th anniversary of his album, Canyon Songs, with a very special show at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville. At the show, he performed the album in its entirety track-for-track, as well as a second set of Lucca classics from over the years. Joining him onstage at this very special event were “American Idol” winner and recent tour mate David Cook, Lady Antebellum guitarist Jason “Slim” Gambill, Nick Bearden of Jamestown Revival, Tim Jones of Truth and Salvage Co., and tour mate Christian Lopez. Also in 2016, Lucca released two EPs of material from a previously recorded session at the legendary Sun Studio (in Memphis) and another session he’d done in Muscle Shoals, AL in 2006.

Prior to hitting the road with Hultquist this fall, Lucca has confirmed a residency in Nashville this summer with a series of four free shows at The Country (110 28th Avenue North, Nashville); one already took place on June 28th, and three more shows will follow on July 27th (6 p.m.), August 23rd (8 p.m.), and September 6th (8 p.m.). Billed as “Tony Lucca and Friends,” the residency is an opportunity for Lucca to work on some new material for a forthcoming album in a live setting. Confirmed special guests for these shows include Dustin Christensen, Ernie Halter, Paul Pfau, Gabe Dixon, Barrett Baber, and many more.

About Derik Hultquist:  On his new album, Southern Iron, produced by Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Brandi Carlile, Aubrie Sellers, Lee Ann Womack) and Eric Masse (Mikky Ekko, Robert Ellis, Andrew Combs), Derik Hultquist offers rich portraits of reflection, anticipation, and stillness via lush rock-and-roll. This is his first length effort on Carnival Recording Company/30 Tigers, the follow-up to three EPs, Whether ReportLeaning on the Rain, and Mockingbird’s Mouth. This recent effort earned him widespread attention and opening slots for complementary heavy hitters including Sturgill Simpson, The Lone Bellow, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Joan Osborne, Jackie Greene, Bob Schneider, Matthew Logan Vasquez, Sean Hayes, Sean McConnell, Ben Sollee, as well as his own headlining tour.

Greta Van Fleet – Straight Outta Frankenmuth, MI

STRAIGHT OUTTA FRANKENMUTH, MICHIGAN, GRETA VAN FLEET

SIGNS GLOBAL DEALS WITH LAVA/REPUBLIC RECORDS
AND WILLIAM MORRIS ENDEAVOR

“Highway Tune” Released Today
EP Due Out April 21, May Dates with The Struts

“Highway Tune,” the debut track from Michigan’s Greta Van Fleet, is a tasty slab of rock’n’roll the way it was always meant to be – loaded with bravado and flair, a righteous attitude of defiance, of love, and a simultaneous kinship with alienation and belonging – and is released today on Lava/Republic Records.  Check it out here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj56b8Ucjaw

“Greta Van Fleet is the future of real Rock & Roll,” said Jason Flom, President of Lava Records, who personally signed the band.  “They’ve got the chops, the swagger and the songs to make their mark as the band of their generation.”
With not all of them old enough to have voted in last November’s election, Greta Van Fleet – twin  brothers Josh Kiszka (vocals) and Jake Kiszka (guitars), younger brother Sam Kiszka (bass), and best friend Danny Wagner (drums) – collectively write and perform all of their own material.  Each grew up around a lot of vinyl and has found influences in a diverse array of art and artists, from Jimi Hendrix to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Tchaikovsky to The Who, “The Lord of the Rings” to “Apocalypse Now,” and Robert Frost to Ernest Hemingway.  Raised just north of Detroit in Frankenmuth (pop 5000, Michigan’s “Little Bavaria”) by two enlightened sets of parents, the four were actively encouraged to explore, to fulfill their own dreams and desires, and to stay on the path that leads them to that place.
“Our dream is for people to just give our a music a listen,” said bassist Sam Kiszka.  “We want to give people a positive experience so they give out good energy themselves.  If you’re having a bad day, listen to some good music and everything gets better.  We want to be part of that.”
“Highway Tune” paves the way for the release of the band’s first major label EP, Black Smoke Rising, due out April 21.  Produced by Al Sutton (Kid Rock, Hank Williams Jr.) and Marlon Young (Kid Rock) and recorded at Sutton’s Rust Belt Studios in Detroit, the four tracks are rooted in rock’s strongest traditions:  super-sized hooks, incandescent energy, raw riffage and the sweeping vocals of a front man who was born to sing.
In addition, Greta Van Fleet has signed with the powerhouse talent agency William Morris Endeavor for worldwide representation.  First up is a string of May dates with one of today’s most exciting new bands, The Struts (dates below).
“My hair stood on end when I first heard this band, similar to the first time I heard Jane’s Addiction,” said Marc Geiger, partner and head of William Morris Endeavor’s worldwide music division, “and that has been the response from everyone here in the music division.  This band has so much power and artistry – and they can write.  We are all very, very excited about them.”
“We are absolutely amazed at how on board people at Lava and WME are about us,” added Sam.  “Even though we are confident in our music, we never imagined interest in us of this magnitude.  The dates with The Struts will be our first real tour, so we are very excited to live life on the road, see new places and meet new people.  Personally, I’m really looking forward to not sleeping in my own bed for awhile.”
With more dates to be announced, including appearances at major festivals later this year, the upcoming dates with The Struts are as follows:
MAY
12   Austin’s Fuel Room, Libertyville, IL
15   Deluxe at Old National Centre, Indianapolis, IN
16   The Machine Shop, Flint, MI
18   The Rapids Theatre, Niagara Falls, NY
19   Rams Head Live, Baltimore, MD
21   Bottle & Cork, Dewey Beach, DE

Michael Kelly Guitar Co. to Kickstart Lightweight Electric Guitar Collection

CLEARWATER, FL (Mar 21, 2017)— For Michael Kelly Guitar Co., innovation is more than a market experiment—it comes down to listening to the community of players and their needs. After analyzing customer interactions across multiple platforms, Michael Kelly determined there was a pressing need for a lighter weight electric guitar option. In listening to these needs, Michael Kelly is using Kickstarter to bring a brand new series of guitars to their community.

“Our players’ community has been a guiding force in the development of many of our recent collections,” says company founder Tracy Hoeft. “Repeatedly, we heard from many players who, because of various health reasons, truly needed a lighter guitar option. Some were ready to give up playing altogether. Now we are excited to be able to fill this need for players who want to keep making music.”

The company embarked on a two-year research and development effort that resulted in the Michael Kelly Enlightened Series collection, which will pre-launch on Kickstarter at the end of March before launching globally this summer. Each guitar in this series has a target weight of 6 pounds—30% lighter than traditional electrics—without compromising sonic quality or styling.

The Michael Kelly team of guitar experts knew the challenges before they embarked on this mission. But, the team was determined to addresses every challenge head-on with the goal of optimizing the player experience.

Starting with the body, Michael Kelly’s designers began to interview experts in tone wood from around the world. After testing a dozen varieties, they decided on a species of mahogany that delivered excellent tone while being significantly lower in weight than more commonly used tone woods. The body was also designed to be thinner than normal, providing a dual benefit of added comfort as well as weight reduction. The risk of negatively affecting the instrument’s tone as a result of removing weight was mitigated by lightening the area behind the bridge. The development of four ports further allowed the team to reduce weight while retaining the instrument’s tone.

Additionally, these guitars feature parts that have been tooled up with aluminum, rather than standard steel guitar parts. Aluminum also proved to be ideal for tone and improving instrument performance. In terms of balance, no detail was overlooked in trying to solve the neck-heavy weight problem. Adjustments included finding an alternative set of locations for the strap buttons to overcome the issue.

Of course, an expertly engineered, lightweight design is only as practical as the sonic quality it enables. Michael Kelly worked to identify the natural sonic profile of each guitar in the Enlightened Series. Each model has customized pickups to enhance sonic performance, as well as special electronics modifications that increase the selection of sounds to allow each player to fine-tune their favorites.

The Michael Kelly team can’t wait for players to try out this innovative “light-done-right” collection that won’t break the bank—or their back! Enlightened Series guitars will be priced beginning at MSRP $850. Stay tuned and visit the Kickstarter project page, www.MichaelKellyGuitars.com/ultralight to learn about exclusive incentives and rewards for pledges.

Fanburst: a music sharing platform for artists

The best way to describe Fanburst? Think of Fanburst like a Youtube or Soundcloud –

but just for music.

fanburst-comWhat makes Fanburst ideal for artists? Unlimited uploads and downloads, no limits on anything. Fanburst also has a bunch of other features they are rolling out, and the goal is to help artists make money selling merch, concert tix, and growing their fanbase.  Sounds like a win/win.

Fanburst was built on simple philosophies: They think it’s backwards to charge artists for sharing their music.
Their goal is to help artists share music with their fans and earn a living while doing it.  Albums don’t belong on Mediafire or Zippyshare. The Internet has been an amazing place for singles, mixes, and individual recordings, but albums, EPs, and mixtapes desperately need a home, too.  The Internet doesn’t have borders, so why should music? Amar John, “Paint Dat” 23-year-old Bronx rapper with a nimble flow

unnamed-6Bronx, New York rapper Amar John presents his new single “Paint Dat”, produced by Steven Sharp. Amar says the song is about “finding success in the midst of pressure, adversity, and internal conflicts, while maintaining composure, and motivation to persevere. It also explains how the average person in this position, with trust issues, finds balance for these negatives by focusing on things on the opposite polarity, such as drugs, jewelry, and women.” Lexibanks produced Amar’s last single “Angels & Demons” (Soundcloud).

NELSON and Wendy and Carnie Wilson perform on ‘THE TALK’

LOS ANGELES, December 13, 2016
“This Christmas Too” is available in stores, now.  The album is a true family affair for Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, who have teamed up with another pair of platinum, second- (and, in the Nelsons‘ case, third-) generation performers in their childhood friends Carnie and Wendy Wilson for a holiday single that celebrates not only their legendary rock fathers – Ricky Nelson and Brian Wilson – but their individual hit-making histories. The large-screen video for the single “This Christmas” can be viewed
Nelson, along with Wendy and Carnie Wilson, will make their television debut with a performance of “This Christmas” on CBS’s “The Talk” on Dec. 14 at 2:00pm ET/1:00pm PT.
NELSON is once again a solid Top 10 Holiday radio smash with “This Christmas” – with a major Mediabase and Nielsen/BDS chart and national airplay profile going head to head with major superstars Josh Groban, Train, Pentatonix and Neil Diamond. Building on their breakout 2015 holiday success, the new 2016 version featuring Carnie and Wendy Wilson has been met with enthusiastic radio programmer support and solid airplay right up there with the established Christmas classics.
Both the Nelson brothers and Wilson sisters experienced chart-topping success from the very start of their careers.  Nelson’s “(I Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection,” from their 1990 multi-platinum debut album, After the Rain, went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, along with the #6 title track and Top 40 hits “More Than Ever” and “Only Time Will Tell.” The Wilson sisters’ Wilson Phillips – with Chynna Phillips, the daughter of the Mamas & the Papas’ John and Michele – scored three #1 singles that same year in “Hold On,” “Release Me” and “You’re in Love,” from their self-titled multi-platinum debut.
CBS’s Daytime Emmy Award-winning talk show THE TALK features a panel of well-known news and entertainment personalities discussing current events, pop culture, contemporary issues, family, celebrity and the trending topics of the day. The daily one-hour series is hosted by Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler and Sheryl Underwood. The hosts swap stories, challenge each other on issues and engage the studio audience and viewers at home about events in the headlines and their own homes. Show segments include guest interviews with entertainers and newsmakers, musical performances, cooking demos with celebrity chefs, as well as real-world advice. Multiple Daytime Emmy Award-winning John Redmann serves as executive producer. Gilbert, who developed the show, is also an executive producer. Heather Gray and Kristin Matthews are co-executive producers. THE TALK’s seventh season premiered Monday, Sept. 12.

For nearly three decades, the name Crowbar has been synonymous with HEAVY. Since rising ominously from the swamplands of New Orleans in 1990, they’ve been hailed internationally as one of the world’s foremost purveyors of crushing, melodic sludge. The Serpent Only Lies, is both an affirmation of the band’s staying power and a nod to their legacy. “To me, it’s a fresh-sounding version of old-school Crowbar,” says Windstein.

“I intentionally went back and listened to a lot of old Crowbar stuff, like the self-titled and Broken Glass albums, to get a feel for what my mindset was 20-plus years ago. I also went back and listened to the bands that influenced Crowbar in the beginning, like Trouble, Saint Vitus, Melvins, and the first Type O Negative record. So it was kinda me doing my homework.”

The result is an album that stands toe-to-toe with those early Crowbar classics while maintaining the lumbering hooks of mid-period standouts like 1998’s Odd Fellows Rest and 2000’s Equilibrium. “Even lyrically, the approach was a little more old-school,” Windstein offers. “Some of the songs have less lyrics to let the riffs breathe a little more, which I had kind of gotten away from over the years. It was a conscious thing to go back to that.”

The tour cycle for The Serpent Only Lies marks the return of original Crowbar bassist Todd “Sexy T” Strange, who left the band back in 1999 but now joins Windstein, drummer Tommy Buckley and guitarist Matt Brunson in forging Crowbar’s future.  “Todd helped start the band, so having him back is important to me and, I think, the fans,” Windstein offers. “It’s a great feeling to be standing onstage next to him. It’s a breath of fresh air for the band and makes us stronger.”

“Having this be our eleventh record, we’re very fortunate because so many bands don’t last this long,”Windstein adds. “My whole outlook on music as a career is the Motörhead outlook, which is that slow and steady wins the race. If you continue to put out killer records, continue to kick ass onstage every night and continue to treat your fans with respect, that’s the stuff people will remember.”

The LP Past Life will be the follow up to their 2015 debut single and video for “Calm,” directed by Josiah Moore (Ice Nine Kills, Sirens and Sailors, It Lives, It Breathes). That year the band expanded its touring across the Northeast, exposing its unforgiving live performance alongside such acts as Letlive,He Is Legend and Norma Jean. Musically, Unwill has been compared to the likes of Linkin Park, Deftones, Chevelle and Underoath. But the band doesn’t shy from putting its own spin on alternative rock.

The band’s single “Soul” was previously releaseed and can be heard by clicking through below.

LISTEN TO “SOUL” HERE VIA SPOTIFY
Past Life features eleven songs that are unrelenting in their grim honesty. The album deals with themes of identity, faith, self-doubt, solipsism, regret, and the truest parts of our natures. Beneath the dark exterior of these songs, however, are shreds of light.

Within the eleven-song journey of Past Life, listeners will come across the many sides of Rocco Sylvio’s voice, smooth on one end and coarse on the other. They will also hear cleaner guitars mixed in with the dirtier tones, and soaring melodies alongside unapologetic heavy riffs.

Wherever listeners come to face Unwill, whether it be through live performance or studio recording, they can be sure to always be met with relentless force.

The band will head out on the road with TERRAFORM this fall. You can find all tour dates here.

LOVERBOY STARS IN NEW NATIONAL CAR RENTAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN WITH SEINFELD’s PATRICK WARBURTO

Canadian rock legends LOVERBOY – featuring original members vocalist Mike Reno, guitarist Paul Dean, keyboardist Doug Johnson and drummer Matt Frenette – have become pop culture staples and heroes to a new generation of rock fans, and are now set for even more exposure with a TV campaign for National Car Rental, which started rolling out on the first weekend of the NFL season on Sunday.
The spot for National Car Rental features the band and major fan Patrick Warburton, best known for his roles as David Puddy in Seinfeld, the title character in The Tick and Johnny Johnson on NewsRadio, as well as the voice of Family Guy‘s paraplegic police officer Joe Swanson.  After Warburton touts that four out of five National rentals result in a free upgrade, the group piles into the rental car with Warburton and drives home the commercial’s message with the title of one of their many hits, “Lovin’ Every Minute of It.”  There is also a digital short, specifically made available on National Car Rental’s YouTube channel, with Warburton having the group autograph their Get Lucky album, and pledging his devotion.
The commercial and the digital short will be featured with posts on National Car Rental’s social media pages starting September 8 as well as on Loverboy’s Facebook on September 10 and 16.
The group has been appearing on tour with Rick Springfield and they continue to headline dates into the fall, including a show at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas on October 28, with the full itinerary below.  As part of the digital short, Warburton tells them, “July 2, 1986… Vancouver, I was in the fourth row right there…. I was President of the Loverboy’s Lovers Club, California Chapter.”

LOVERBOY produced four multi-platinum albums, including the four-million-selling Get Lucky, and a trio of double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s Keep It Up and 1985’s Lovin’ Every Minute of It. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the arena-rock anthem “Working for the Weekend,” such staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “The Kid Is Hot Tonite,” “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.”

INTERVIEW: JEAN PAUL GASTER OF CLUTCH (CLUTCH @STAGEAE OCT 1)

Every time that Clutch rolls into Pittsburgh a few things are guaranteed: 1.  The show will be packed  2.  There will be mass quantities of beer consumed at said show and 3. drummer for Clutch, Jean Paul Gaster will put on a drum clinic just by playing with the band.

No matter how many times I have had the opportunity to speak with JP, there always comes across a sincerity and thoughtfulness that you do not get from every “rockstar”.  The Clutch guys are different; they are blue collar Maryland men with amazing work ethics.  JP is no exception.  In fact, when I first called him he was unable to answer because he was practicing drums.  First off, one does not hear that often from a seasoned pro and secondly, he called me back right away and apologized.  Trust me this is an anomaly when it comes to interviews.

Clutch plays Pittsburgh’s Stage AE October 1 with guests Zakk Sabbath and Kyng.  Before one of the most killer line ups of the year comes here I had the pleasure of chatting with JP.

You have a tremendous work ethic and constantly work on your craft.

I spend a lot of time practicing.  I very much enjoy it.  It’s the kind of thing that the more I do it the more I’m working at it.  Its kind of a process.

Do you still take lessons from people?

I have not taken lessons for roughly year or so.  The last time was when I got together with Johnny Vidacovich we spoke in great detail about brushes and that was pretty eye opening for me.  I’m always checking stuff out paying attention to stuff, maybe even getting on YouTube.  You can pick up a lot of stuff and I try to take advantage of it.

Your style is very much “less is more”, serve the song.  Is that the type of playing that you are attracted to looking at those videos?

Very much.  When I was younger I may have tried some pyrotechnics, but I was never really drawn to that style of drumming.

now-availablePsychic Warfare has been out for around a year and Clutch played Pittsburgh just before the album was released.  You have just returned from Europe and have been on the road for a long time.  Does it get tedious at this point?

Well, there is an element of that but I don’t think tedious is the right word.  It gets draining, it can be difficult.  In fact this last tour was physically tough.  There were a lot of fly-in dates, going to the airport, get a couple hours of sleep, do a gig and then go right back out to the airport.  You know if you do that several times in a row that will kick your ass.  There is a lot of downtime too in between shows, that;s tough being away from home on a tour bus with a ton of other guys, but more often than not its a blast.  You know give me a break, you get to play music for a living, you get to go all around the world, that’s an amazing experience.  It’s the best job in the world and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Psychic Warfare is your 11th record, how have you evolved with this album?

Well, each record is a different snapshot of where the band is at any given moment.  What I mean by that is musically, personally, business wise too.  So each one has its own identity, we make a point not to repeat ourselves, challenge ourselves, experiment with sounds, sometimes you get way way far out there because that’s where the creativity is.  But then again having said that, we are the same four guys playing the same four instruments, there is going to be that element that at some point it’s going to sound like Clutch.  We might be writing something and I’ll say well it sounds like this or this sounds like another song from a particular record.  But at the end of the day it’s all four making music, I think we got those fucking terms down and you just accept who you are.

You guys just put out a video for A Quick Death In Texas.  A pretty fun video, but did you have fun making it?

Well, yeah.  It’s the closest thing to acting that any of us have ever done and we had great costumes and got a little “pissed” at the office, that helped us get into character.  It was a good experience, it was fun, its something we hadn’t done before.  We tried to make it tongue in cheek and we got to play cowboys, kind of ridiculous!

Classic Rock Magazine has Psychic Warfare as a nominee for album of the year.  How does it feel to get industry awards like that?

There are two sides to that, it’s a bit demonstrative. We struggled for many years and it maybe has not been until the last three records that people have really taken notice of the band, but we have also had a lot of loyal fans since the beginning and for that we are grateful. The fact that we can attract that kind of attention and release on our own label is sweeter, for so many years we had to be on other labels.  We are able to have our own label and for the fans to perceive Psychic Warfare as well as (they have), that’s incredible for us as a band.

What do you think the biggest mistake Clutch has made in their career?

I remember clearly having gotten the Pantera tour in like 1998.   We were all fans of Pantera at the time.  We really compared ourselves at that time to more of a heavy jam band.  Rather than get up there and play our heavier songs and try to make the best of it crowd, we found ourselves jamming and probably we should have played a more straight up kind of a set.  The fans were spending a lot of time trying to accept us and we spent a lot of time trying to be like The Band of Gypsies. And as much as I love that style of playing I think it kind of got lost on some of the fans, maybe we could have done a better job.

Kyng and Zakk Sabbath are coming out with you for this tour.

Kyng are friends of ours, great band out of California, very talented guys who just made a record with Machine who is our producer that we have worked with several times.  I’m anxious to hear their new album.  And Zakk Sabbath, give me a break!  Zakk Wylde is one of the premier guitarists of our generation and him playing those songs (Black Sabbath) is going to be so great to see, he’s an incredible player and his band…Joey Castillo is playing drums and he is one of my favorite drummers from the Sugartooth days and Blasko (Rob Nicholson) is playing bass and we have been friends with him back to his band Drown, I think we toured with them back in ’98.  We’ve known Blasko for a long time and I think it’s going to be a great tour with a great line-up.

What is going on with your side projects?

Yeah, I’m always trying to stay involved in different things.  I just did a blues gig in Maryland.  Next week I’ll be working with Mark Morton (Lamb of God), Yanni Papadopoulos (Stinking Lizaveta) and Chris Brooks (Lionize) on new material (for Mark Morton’s solo album).  If things come up I try to do them because for me, it’s my passion.

You are known for your love of vintage gear.  Is there a “great white whale” out there that you seek?

Well, I love the 1920’s era Ludwig Black Beauty. And they can be found but they are just very expensive.  I need to stay off of Ebay.  A couple beers and Ebay pretty much guarantees I am going to buy a new snare drum.

Really looking forward to the tour coming Oct 1 in Pittsburgh.

We’ve been playing Pittsburgh for many, many years.  I’m thinking the first time we played there was in 1994 with Sepultura.  Pittsburgh has been good to us.  There is some great halls there and some great food.  It’s kind of hard to beat.

Barrage 8 coming to Pittsburgh

Barrage 8 is the latest project from John Crozman, Dean Marshall and Tony Moore, the original creators of the hit show Barrage. Utilizing the same energy, panache and innovative stage performance that Barrage was known for, Barrage 8 features all the instruments in the modern string family. The “8” in the name represents a re-imagining of the string octet: 5 violins, viola, cello and double bass. This instrumentation drives a rich and powerful sonic palette that further explores the musical diversity in the Barrage 8 compositions and arrangements. Barrage 8 presents what the Barrage name has come to represent worldwide:

“a memorable presentation of music, from many genres and cascading generations, delivered in a way not seen or heard before.”

Chartiers Valley Middle School and High School Orchestra will be performing with the musicians of Barrage 8 on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the Intermediate School at7pm.

Early Spring Trifecta With Fletcher, The End Men & Land Lines

Fletcher

Team Clermont-Fletcher began in early 2012 as a basement project between English brothers Oscar and Harvey Baker and their Chicagoan friend Tom Fry. Since then, the group has been steadily creating an incredible buzz as one of rock music’s new, relevant acts. The band has developed a strand of new-age British Rock with quirky melodies and brain tingling music. Insisting on sticking to a three-piece, Fletcher has created a vigorous and chemistry-driven connection between each member.

Their release details have a hard time comparing them to other acts, as their sound is so different. They’ve heard names such as The Flaming Lips, Arctic Monkeys, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Kooks, Kings of Leon, The Strokes – but nobody can quite figure their influence. They like it that way evidently. Oscar Baker might not be the rock star that Johnny Borrell is but his vocals are easily on par. There is a coy appeal to their sound and delivery and you can def hear the resemblences to The Artic Monkeys and Razorlight.  I’ll stop here with the references and let you hear for yourself. I’m in queue for the this April 9th self release date and hope to review the entire record then.

The End Men start off Play With Your Toys” by Cleaning Your Mind. The first track is a haunting chant with the unmistakeable voice of singer-songwriter Matthew Hendershot delivering a lecture to get your head right.  Now Hendershot’s voice has been compared to Tom Waits which I can accept.  He’s a crooner that showcases his sound via the two piece approach in live settings. He is joined by the very talented Livia Ranalli on drums, percussions, toys, vox, other noise makers.

Sound likes: warm fuzzed out guitars, great acoustic boomy drums, grooving purposeful bass lines, raspy storytelling vox, interesting song arrangements, unpredictable, stellar percussive ideas.

The Brooklyn based duo have a devilish lure about them. Hendershot channels a villain storyteller from a Disney movie who’d do well in pairing with filmmaker Tim Burton to create a gloomy storyboard. Track 4 “Into The Mine” is a fascinating composition that projects a male version of Cinderella’s Lady Tremaine or maybe a down and out Jafar sitting on some rolled up oriental rugs smoking squares in beat up attire.

The End Men are garage-rock pioneers on a time warp circus tour telling warm sounding stories. Forget the snake oil people this is as real as it gets. Play With Your Toys is your spring-summer BBQ soundtrack.

Land Lines is a Colorado based strings band. The players are Martina Grbac, Anna Mascorella and Ross Harada. Their 11 track release under the same name is a collection of very live sounding works.

land lines

Sounds like: bright tamborines, cellos, two part female harmonies, plucked strings a very different sound from bowing, short and percussive rather than sustained-pizzicato, straight ahead songs, militant drumming, bells.

I especially like their very acoustic sound sans electricity.  Martina Grbac’s voice carries the tonality of Dolores O’Riordan‘s. The approach is very safe in terms of progression. They tend to stay in the same key too much for my liking.  I keep waiting for the sonic palette to change and would love to hear some electronica somewhere underneath it all. The trio makes up for these simple shortcomings with very dynamic songs and vocals. They appear to be happy with “instruments, books and hot water” and what else do you really need right?
