ONO Ascends To #2 With A Bullet On Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play Chart

Following a decade of dancefloor domination as her alter-ego ONO, Yoko Ono continues to be a formidable presence on the club charts holding sway with discerning DJs, clubbers and tastemakers worldwide.  With her latest remix single “WALKING ON THIN ICE 2013” – which ascends to #2 WITH A BULLET ON BILLBOARD’S HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY CHART (issue date: 10/05/2013, on news stands 9/28/13, and on Billboard.com on 9/26/13) – dance music’s celebrated “grande dame” and mother of reinvention finds herself nestled comfortably alongside contemporary mainstream and electronic pop heavyweights LADY GAGA, DAFT PUNK, KATY PERRY, SELENA GOMEZ,  AVICII, KYLIE MINOGUE and PET SHOP BOYS.

Originally recorded during the ‘Double Fantasy’ recording sessions with John Lennon, “WALKING ON THIN ICE” would be the last recording by John and Yoko — on that fateful night of December 8, 1980.  Released in the early months of 1981, the pioneering electronic-injected dance / post-disco / nu-wave hybrid would become ONO’s definitive masterstroke and, easily one of her most accessible, best-known and well-regarded works. The searing anthem brilliantly captured the kinetic pulse, tension, gritty nihilism and urban cool that defined the times then, and, in an acknowledgement to its timeless insights, continues to define them now.

In 2003, MIND TRAIN and TWISTED RECORDS took this song to the top of the Billboard Club chart, kicking off ONO’S streak of 10 #1 BILLBOARD HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY chart-topping club hits, including “HOLD ME”, “TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE”, “MOVE ON FAST”, “WOULDNIT’ (I’M A STAR)”, “GIVE ME SOMETHING”, “I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH”, “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”, “NO NO NO” and “EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN”.

Now 10 years on, ONO revisits “WALKING ON THIN ICE” and teams up with an international cast of dance music innovators to reinvent the enduring landmark anthem befitting 2013, melding the classic with the contemporary – old school and new school – with blistering results. Released as an expansive, 4-part digital green release (no materials used or abused), the set includes essential high-octane re-rubs from Grammy-nominated house music pioneer and living legend DANNY TENAGLIA, Dutch EDM heavyweight R3HAB, Grammy-winning  remixer/producer RALPHI ROSARIO,  TOM STEPHAN (aka SUPERCHUMBO), dance/electronic and indie-rock master RICH MOREL (of MOREL, DEATHFIX and BLOWOFF fame), EMJAETEDD PATTERSON and DAVE AUDÉ (whose discography includes remixes and productions for Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, U2, Beyonce, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Coldplay and Pussycat Dolls, and more than 85 #1 Billboard Club Play Chart hits).

As a bonus, the fete also includes the exclusive Rob Di Stefano 2013 Edit of PETER RAUHAUFOR’S “FUTURE MIX”. The Grammy Award-winning house music DJ, producer/ and label owner, best known for his dance remixes of  MADONNA, CHER, WHITNEY HOUSTON, BRITNEY SPEARS, MARIAH CAREY, RIHANNA, ADELE, PET SHOP BOYS and DEPECHE MODE, passed away in May after a long battle with brain cancer. Peter was a loyal supporter and fan of Yoko’s work and collaborated with her on several remix singles. ONO performed multiple times at his long-standing Saturday night residency at The Roxy to transfixed and elated capacity crowds.   Her label partners (MIND TRAIN and TWISTED RECORDS) decided to include this new edit as a tribute, and having already made a donation in his memory to the American Cancer Society, felt it would be appropriate to donate the proceeds of Peter’s work to the ACS as well.

“WALKING ON THIN ICE 2013” is available as digital green releases (no materials used or abused) on MIND TRAIN / TWISTED Records on iTunesBeatport and at all fine digital retailers.

ONO’s “Hold Me” Single Jumps Into Top Ten On Billboard’s Hot Dance/Club Play Chart

2013 marks a milestone year for ONO. The influential pop culture icon, outspoken activist and enduring avant-garde visionary celebrates her 80th birthday on February 18th. Her dynamic, uncompromising and, often controversial, career has spanned more than 5 decades and has seenONO expand from vilified outsider artist, socio-political revolutionary and progenitor of punk and New York’s famed Downtown art scene to now include global peace ambassador, philanthropic contributor to the arts and Billboard Dance chart-topping diva.

In the past decade, the boundless art-rock visionary has opened up her catalog of original works to be cleverly reinvented by a cherry-picked assemblage of dance, electronic and indie/alternative music innovators including PET SHOP BOYS, FLAMING LIPS, BASEMENT JAXX, DANNY TENAGLIA, PENGUIN PRISON, JUAN MACLEAN, FELIX DA HOUSECAT, PEACHES, ANTONY (of ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS), SPARKS, CSS, HANK SHOCKLEE, CAT POWER, JUNIOR BOYS, BIMBO JONES, and THE POLYPHONIC SPREE. To date, the groundbreaking remix series has spawned 9 #1 BILLBOARD HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY chart-topping hits including “TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE”, “MOVE ON FAST”, “WOULDNIT’ (I’M A STAR)”, “GIVE ME SOMETHING”, “I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH”, “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”, “NO NO NO”, “EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN” and the definitive anthem “WALKING ON THIN ICE”, as well as, 2 critically-acclaimed remix albums – YES, I’M A WITCH and OPEN YOUR BOX.

ONO kicks off the new year with a fiery new dance single,“HOLD ME” – a searing collaboration co-written and produced by EDM A-lister DAVE AUDÉ (whose discography includes remixes and productions for U2, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Depeche Mode, Coldplay and Pussycat Dolls, and an unprecedented 83 #1 Billboard Club Play Chart hits). The single finds ONO as vibrant and compelling as ever, continuing her streak of dance floor and club chart domination.

“HOLD ME” jumps into the top 10, at #9 with a bullet, in Billboard’s 3/23/13 issue (hitting news stands on 3/16/13), and will appear on the billboard.com web site on 3/14/13.

While her previous club hits have been star-studded reworkings of her classic material, “HOLD ME” is an entirely new song co-written by ONO and Dave, tailor-made for dance floors, and filled with her vivid lyrical imagery. Combined with Audé’s midas touch for solid, contemporary club anthems, the collaboration is an inspired one that sheds a new light on ONO and adds a strikingly new dimension to her illustrious career. Enlisted for remixes are Grammy Award-winning producer RALPHI ROSARIO, premiere Dutch DJ/producer R3HAB, sweltering progressive house collective PAPERCHA$ER, Spain’s IVAN GOMEZ & NACHO CHAPADO, Brazilian electro house/dubstep heavyweights DIRTY LOUD, electro nu-rave legend TOMMIE SUNSHINE and Boston-based wunderkind EMJAE (aka DJ/producer/remixer Matt Johnson of Nightriders and The Night Owl), all of whom deliver adrenalin-fueled bangers that keep the emotion and energy levels high. In addition to his original production, Audé himself also contributes to the collective of vibrant interpretations.

“HOLD ME” is available as digital green releases (no materials used or abused) on MIND TRAIN / TWISTEDRecords with the first set of mixes out now on iTunesand at all fine digital retailers.

Earlier in the week, on February 15, Yoko Ono’s retrospective, HALF-A-WIND SHOW opened at the Schirn Kuntshalle in Frankfurt and will tour to major museums across Denmark, Austria and Spain in 2013 and 2014. Numerous projects are slated for 2013 including the reissue of Ono’s albums from 1968-1985, a career-spanning art book, Infinite Universe At Dawn highlighting six decades of her work, and the curation of the 2013 Meltdown Festival at Southbank Centre in London in June.

Over the past few years, Ono has achieved a record string of nine consecutive #1 hits on the Billboard dance charts. Her latest dance single, “Hold Me” was released last week. In September, Ono released the improvisational YOKOKIMTHURSTON album with Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Other recent collaborations have included recordings and performances with Eric Clapton, Lady Gaga, RZA, Antony, Ornette Coleman, the Flaming Lips, the Pet Shop Boys, Mark Ronson and tUnE-yArDs.

Between My Head And The Sky received 4 & 5-star rave reviews from Rolling Stone, Mojo, Q, Uncut, NME, Spin & many more, and was picked among Mojo Magazine’s top albums of the year. Additionally, Mojo honored Yoko with a Lifetime Achievement Award and she received the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award at The Venice Biennale.

Yoko Ono Releases ‘tUnE-yArDs as YOKO’

In 2010, Yoko Ono performed several shows with the Plastic Ono Band and special guests. At the Orpheum in Los Angeles, Iggy Pop, Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Perry Farrell, RZA, Lady Gaga, Carrie Fisher and Joseph Gordon-Levitt paid tribute to Yoko, performing songs from throughout her career.

Yoko also invited a young group she had recently fallen in love with: tUnE-yArDs, whose breakthrough album, Whokill, was still a year away. tUnE-yArDs wowed the audience and famous guests, updating the original 1972 lyrics of Yoko’s “We’re All Water.” Yoko loved their performance and urged tUnE-yArDs to record the song for this benefit single, second in a series of 10″ records, each with a different artist performing Yoko songs.

Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs described the project: “Getting familiar with Yoko’s vast body of work has been a true education for me. When it came time to choose one of Yoko’s songs to cover, and then later one to remix, I had the opportunity to delve into the ground-breaking, punk-before-punk, radical, brave and brilliant work she had done, album after album. More musicians should learn Yoko’s history as a songwriter and performer — she’s been light years ahead of us for decades.” Yoko replied: “Merrill, Thank you for giving your love to “We’re All Water.” It’s incredible!”

Also included is tUnE-yArDs’ remix of Yoko’s song “Warrior Woman,” an out-take from the Plastic Ono Band’s “Feeling The Space” album (1973). The remix is a sneak preview of a 2nd volume of the critically acclaimed Yes, I’m A Witch to be released later this year, featuring re-inventions of ONO’s catalog by an eclectic group of cutting edge artists.

The 10″ records are a limited edition of 1000 copies. On the flip side of each is a Yoko etching.

Profits from the records, and 100% of income from the downloads (at http://www.ChimeraMusic.com) are being donated by Yoko, Tune-yards and Chimera Music to the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, who have been doing great work for one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, providing emergency food and shelter, and helping families and businesses get back on their feet.

On downloads purchased from iTunes in the U.S., iTunes is also donating their share of income to the cause. Thank you iTunes.

An Invisible Flower is an illustrated story by 19-year-old Yoko Ono circa 1952! It’s being published by Chimera Library (through Chronicle Books) as a gorgeous, hardcover book of 48 pages of pastel drawings. A special boxed edition is available at Chimera Music for fine art collectors. The boxed edition is reproduced true to the original with SOLEGRAPH digital art printing. For decades, Yoko kept the drawings in a box on the family book shelf, and son Sean remembered finding the box when he was a child. The drawings (on letter paper) were out of order, and Sean had to figure out the “proper” order of the pages. This inspired the boxed edition.
