Upon being assembled in 2003 by founding members Martin Samson and Stef Jomphe in Gatineau, Insurrection has been growing, modulating and mutating into a machine of an aural onslaught. Assaulting witnesses in both languages of French and English, Insurrection has blended its calculated technicality to create a signature mixture of merciless death metal that has emerged from the prominent Canadian scene.

Shortly after their 2009 debut release ‘Prologue’, giving true life to their monstrosity, the formation launched their second release 2010’s Fracture’, a dark prophecy of unforgivable times and a brutal soundtrack to the fall of man. It pushed the limits with every outing, creating Insurrection to become more than the sum of its parts, but a merciless abomination.

Now the band is gearing up for their follow up ‘Prototype’ to push yet another brutal assault and tour cities across Canada to convert the unwitting to their legion.

CHANT Music Video Blocked From YouTube

Band addresses YouTube’s selective censorship

YouTube has censored tribal-industrial drum project CHANT, removing the band’s extended music video for their track “Need” late last week.

The video-hosting super-website did not cite specific reasons for the ban, simply noting it had been “flagged as inappropriate”, and later removed after determining that “the video content was in violation of their Community Guidelines”.

CHANT joins Angelspit, Hirsute Pursuit, and other bands in the electronic-industrial genre that have been
censored by YouTube for their content. Bands such as Die Antwoord, Flaming Lips, Micronauts, and Lenny Kravitz continue to host sexually graphic videos and remain unbanned to this day.

“To quote Bill Hicks, ‘I almost forgot this was the USA… the United States of Advertising!'” says Bradley Bills of CHANT. “On one hand, I knew what I created was pushing limits – that it would invoke an emotional response and possibly make some people uncomfortable, but regardless of the subject matter: there’s no mistaking that the ‘Need’ video is an Art film and Art by nature needs no censorship. The video was set to the proper YouTube guidelines, viewable by mature audiences only, and if I were an established artist making coveted ad revenue for YouTube – this would not have been an issue.”
CHANT fans had the opportunity to own/view a copy of the ‘Need’ music video by purchasing a limited edition copy from the Band’s site, stored on a USB Thumb drive, along with physical props used in the actual video shoot – all of which have now sold out.

“I’ll take the ban as a compliment and find satisfaction knowing that copies of the ‘Need’ film are also in the hands of my Fans, and as with all Art it will find its way into the public forum again, no matter how many corporations try to censor and decide what we all should or should not have access to see,” says Bills.
Later this week, CHANT will re-host the extended, uncensored cut of “Need” to VIMEO.

CHANT, an Austin, TX based industrial rock project created by Bradley Bills, has toured the US nationally, and released 2 independent albums paving the way to work with many acclaimed artists within the underground music genre (Pigface/Evil Mothers/Die Krupps). WILSON to Embark on North American Tour With GWAR and Warbeast

The growl of chain saws making firewood of fifty foot pines. That’s WILSON. The howling of a pack of wolves battling a rabid moose. That’s WILSON. The panting, gasping breaths of a smoke break “nooner”. That’s fucking WILSON. The citation for a noise violation… that’s just where the party begins. If all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, then all party and no bullshit have made WILSON juggernauts. For the past few years WILSON has transformed shows into parties, and concerts into riots throughout the Midwest. WILSON has not only held their own, but raised the bar for how much fun live music can be.

Now WILSON is ready to take their party to the road, heading out on the “Fate or Chaos” North American tour with Mutant Overlords GWAR and Warbeast. The tour is set to kick off April 10th in Tucson, AZ and will run through April 25th in Jacksonville, FL. Tickets for all the dates are on sale now.

Chad Nicefield Vocalist/Weirdo Beardo commented on the upcoming “Fate or Chaos” tour:

“We are extremely excited and honored to be supporting the legendary GWAR this April!WILSON cannot wait for all the fuckery to unveil itself on the road with these scumdogs!”

Five dudes growing up in Michigan’s post-industrial wasteland, know that when life gives you lemons, buy a bottle of tequila, chug it, and enjoy biting into that sour fruit. You can taste that philosophy in the music. With a brutal rhythm section and fret-board wizardry they bring the best parts of metal into their hook heavy straight up rock n’ roll. Don’t be surprised if you see the gnarliest, glowering dude in the bar start dancing like a first grader on a school picnic once the music starts. Rabid demand from a growing fan base has sold out their debut EP, “Standing on the Reel”. They have a new full-length album coming in 2013, produced by Steve Evetts (Dillinger Escape Plan, Saves the Day, Every Time I Die).

With a new album in the works and relentless tour schedule, whatever you do, don’t go to, unless you’re ready to fucking party!

Bleeding Rainbow Announces Tour With Cave Singers

Philadelphia based rock quartet Bleeding Rainbow just released their third LP “Yeah Right” on Kanine Records. Bleeding Rainbow says their sounds was directly influenced by bands from their teenage-hood such as Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Yo La Tengo to name a few. Mixing hints of Greg Sage’s anthemic, anxiety-ridden punk riffs, with equal parts drone and noise swells reminiscent of Kevin Shields at his most inventive, with an overlaying of boy-girl harmonies, Bleeding Rainbow channels the Mamas and the Papas as if backed by early Smashing Pumpkins.

Previously Bleeding Rainbow has released a 7 inch singles series including “Pink Ruff”, “Drift Away” and “Waking Dream” – also available digitally with exclusive b sides. Fans of the band now include Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.

Body Language Releases “Lose My Head” Remix EP

Fresh off the success of last year’s Social Studies LP, Body Language have returned with their trademark sound of future-shocked pop, blended with a dash of Soul and R&B. Or as the Brooklyn quartet puts it, “Our world still exists in an indie-disco bubble; we’re just pushing the limits of every genre to a point where the bubble’s about to pop.”

That’s certainly the case with “Lose My Head”—a floor-filler that’s driven by late ‘70s funk licks and diamond-encrusted keys. The Jimmy Edgar remix shakes down the original vocals and lays them cleanly on top of a spacy, no-nonsense acid bassline for a proper throw-back groove. Light Year’s remix takes us to the edge of minimalism, with chopped- up vocals, chunky 808s, and space-age blips and beeps.

Mike Semesky (former HAARP Machine) Posts Amazing Cover of “Heartlines”

Mike Semesky is probably best known for being the talented lead singer of The HAARP Machine from the United Kingdom. Now that HAARP has officially disbanded with three of the four band members leaving due to some funky goings-on from lead guitarist and band leader Al Mu’min ( it looks like Mike will continue singing elsewhere. We hope to talk to Mike about what went down in more detail in the near future.
Mike has two side projects, Rest Among Ruins and Ordinance, that he has kept up on while in HAARP and he has done session vocals for some really fun projects including Haunted Shores, Star Monarchy, and Memoirs.
We here at PMM can only hope Mike comes into an even better situation (hint, hint those looking for an amazing vocalist). For now, check out some of his stuff on his YouTube Page and this gem posted today, “Heartlines”, a Florence & The Machine Cover featuring Aleka Farha. Beautiful Mike…beautiful.

Brazilian Natives Mindflow Take On Pittsburgh With Their Bare Hands

Opening the 2013 Take Action Tour is Mindflow, a multi-genre hardcore band hailing from Brazil. The beginnings of Mindflow developed 10 years ago when Rafael Pensado and Rodrigo Hidalgo were in Australia. ‘“Rodrigo and I were both always in cover bands,” explains Rafael, “but we both felt that we should be writing our own music so we started working together with me on drums and Rodrigo on guitar”. Meanwhile, back in Brazil, Ricardo Winandy was busy learning to play a variety of instruments before settling on the bass guitar. At the same time, young Danilo Herbert was singing with a series of local bands while learning everything he could about vocal technique and music theory. When Rafael and Rodrigo returned to Brazil a year later, they met Ricardo and a mutual respect for one another’s abilities brought them together, first as an instrumental unit developing their original sound. “Once we left high school, we were ready to devote our time and our lives to the band,” announces Rodrigo, “so we set about trying to find a vocalist.” “The auditions went on endlessly,” recalls Ricardo, “these guys would all come in bragging about all they’d done and how great they were and then they would start singing……..” But when a producer friend brought Danilo in, the other guys knew they had found their singer. They named themselves MindFlow, set about composing material, rehearsing, and planning for their future (

Now on their third release, Mindflow have put out a record with legendary producer, Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Slipknot, Disturbed, etc.). Pittsburgh heard a vast array of the material from songs like “Breakthrough” and “With Bare Hands” the band’s pop sensibilities and ability for commercial success shine through. But, tunes such as “Thrust Into This Game” give way to the band’s hardcore influences and really got the audience fired up. It will be interesting to see where Mindflow develops as they are exposed to more and more American audiences. They certainly have the right attitude and are all very gracious guys. Check out our intimate talk with the guys backstage at Stage AE in Pittsburgh…

Coheed and Cambria’s Josh Previews Tour with Pittsburgh Music Mag

I don’t know about you, but the tour I am most psyched for right now comes into my town (Pittsburgh) on Feb. 7 at Stage AE and contains no less than Russian Circles, Between The Buried and Me, and headliners Coheed and Cambria. I have been fascinated with Coheed’s sound since their first record which my good friend and tattoo artist Ben Merrell turned me onto when it first came out. Here it is almost eleven years later and they have survived in a very tumultuous business with their integrity and vision intact. A feat not many can claim. Pittsburgh Music Magazine got a chance to talk with drummer Josh Eppard as the band prepared for the tour. Listen in on getting ready to appear on Conan (Monday Jan. 21), the thread between The Afterman Ascension and Descension and how it relates to Josh, the songwriting process, what to look forward to on the tour, “yelling at Travis”!, the importance of rehearsals, being back in the band and not taking things for granted, choosing Between the buried and Me and Russian Circles to tour with, and how Pittsburgh is their third favorite city: Josh of Coheed and Cambria

DARK EMPIRE Announce New Guitarist

New Jersey Progressive Extreme Metallers DARK EMPIRE are happy to announce that Christian Colabelli has stepped in as their new permanent 2nd guitarist. Christian replaces Andrew Atwood, who split from the band just prior to the recording of last year’s album, From Refuge to Ruin.

Video can be viewed below of Christian and co-guitarist Matt Moliti running through some new riffs the band is preparing for a 5-track free download EP for later this year.

Christian had this to say about joining DARK EMPIRE:

“It’s an honor to be an official member of DARK EMPIRE. Since I’ve known Matt, we’ve had a mutual respect and admiration for each other’s playing. When he initially asked me to fill in on guitar for live performances, I quickly recognized the chemistry, power, and potential of the lineup and was amazed at how natural it felt. I know Matt and I will challenge each other as guitarists and I expect huge accomplishments for DARK EMPIRE in 2013.”

Band leader/guitarist/death vocalist Matt Moliti had this to say:

“I’m really excited to have Christian a part of DARK EMPIRE. His technical ability and songwriting skills are definitely going to take things to the next level, and fans can now expect a dual lead guitar attack reminiscent of bands like Racer X and Cacophony on the new material. Yes, we have already started writing some new riffs with the intention of releasing a free 5-track EP by the end of 2013. Stay tuned to the DARK EMPIRE Facebook Page as we will be periodically updating with videos of the writing, rehearsal and recording process!”

Dark Empire will be opening for Nile at BB Kings on March 10th in NYC.

St. Lucia Announces Tour With Ellie Goulding

Following a SOLD OUT Music Hall of Williamsburg show & west coast shows over New Years (including a set at the Snowglobe Music Festival), St. Lucia is heading back out on tour supporting Ellie Goulding across the country. Look out for St. Lucia’s debut LP later this year.

Ellie Goulding says she is “thrilled to have St. Lucia out on tour with us this month, they’re one of my favorite new bands and I’m excited for my fans to see them live.”

Even in the urban wilds of Brooklyn, there may be no one else like Jean-Philip Grobler, otherwise known as St. Lucia.

Originally from Johannesberg, South Africa, Jean grew up performing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. When the choir wasn’t traveling—St. Lucia toured Japan, Australia, Europe, the US and more—they stayed in an enclave tucked in the South African mountains, learning everything from Bach and minimalist opera to African War Songs and Celine Dion.

A young musician could hardly find better training, but as a young teenager, he started to feel that he’d had his fill of classical music, and it felt like an epiphany when he discovered the music of Radiohead. “In South Africa, we used to be quite limited in what we were exposed to in terms of experimental music, and so hearing OK Computer for the first time was like experiencing a completely new Universe. I think it was also my own little form of rebellion against the rigidity of choir life’, he laughs. Eventually, he left the creative “small pond” of South Africa for England, where he spent three years studying music in Liverpool.

St. Lucia’s journey thus far ended—as many do—in New York City, where he started working on the tracks that would turn into his debut EP, to be released in the spring. The St. Lucia EP will mark the first full-length release on Neon Gold Records, the formerly singles-only label that first released Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding and The Naked & Famous.

The atmospheric quality of St. Lucia’s electronic pop is powerful, with the musician’s global travels and history of exotic hideaways effortlessly passed onto the audience through his dreamy, shimmering synths, and multi-layered arrangements. The listener is transfixed and transported into some collective memory of childhood summer.

St. Lucia was born out of a moment in early 2010 when Jean-Philip looked to the past for inspiration. Growing frustrated with a rock project that was starting to feel forced, he delved back into the music that had first inspired him: early Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel and other songs from his youth. ‘I became obsessed with a certain wave of nostalgic pop music, mainly from the 80’s, that to me represents some of the best pop music ever made. The music from that era has this unabashed, completely over-the-top quality to it, and that seemed fresh to me.’ He also rediscovered African music. ‘Growing up in South Africa, African music was always there, and so it was easy to ignore. But after being away from home for a few years, I began to discover just how amazing it actually is.’

Setting up shop in a small Williamsburg studio, Jean began to record and experiment, and eventually these new influences began to surface in his music. After a year of hibernation, Jean began to open the lid on his new project.“I’d show some stuff to my friends and I could see that they didn’t quite get it,” he says. He soon began to getin contact with people, with the idea of setting up a live band. Teaming up with his friend Nick and girlfriend Patricia—now St. Lucia’s drummer and keyboard players respectively—, the three of them “decided to play the demo’s for people in a context where we wouldn’t say anything about it. We’d just play it.”

It was then that the music got the attention of the Knocks, and St. Lucia was soon signed to HeavyRoc Music. His first single, “The Old House is Gone,” was released in spring 2011, fueling online intrigue. After two explosive shows at CMJ, the hype escalated to match. Neon Gold described St. Lucia as a “well-traveled mysterioso… physically incapable of producing anything less than extraordinary.” Bloggers posted St. Lucia’s second single, “All Eyes On You,” accompanied by proclamations: “This is an anthem,” or, “Beware, your hand will get tired from having to push replay over and over.”

“All Eyes On You,” like the rest of the St. Lucia EP, distills the best qualities of eighties pop—drawing out melodic bravado and euphoric energy and discarding any trace of the saccharine or heavy—and adds arresting, fresh elements of contrast. The EP is luminous and hazy, a tropical electronic dream. It has a notable, singular effect on the audience. “In a way that’s been my ambition, to give people a feeling similar to what the music from my youth gives me.” says St. Lucia.

He certainly delivers. “All Eyes On You” conjures up unlikely juxtapositions: an ecstatic nostalgia, a melancholy radiance, a mix of personal immediacy and the wanton urge to get lost in a crowd.

As an artist, St. Lucia has played into this element of anonymity. He has remained mysterious until this point, allowing a few facts about his unusual background to guide the response to his music. He’s starting to lift the veil: “As an artist, you always have lingering doubts. Are people going to get this? Are they going to think it’s cheesy?”

Ultimately, he sets these concerns aside. “What’s of real value to me is just sitting in the studio, working,” he says. “Or that moment when I’m walking along the street and hear something in my head, and let that idea work itself into an arrangement and then see that come to fruition.’

“Of course, it makes you feel good when your stuff starts taking off,” he adds. “It’s nice that people are writing about it, and that bigger things are coming in terms of remixes and record companies. But really, all I ever want to be doing is making music.”

James Iha Premieres “Speed of Love” Video

Click Here To Watch “Speed Of Love” Video On VEVO

James Iha began his career as a co-founder of The Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago in 1987. He recorded and toured with the group until 2000, during which time they released ten albums and became one of the biggest bands of the era, selling millions of albums and filling arenas worldwide. In addition to his guitar playing and singing, James was also a contributing songwriter.

James released his first solo album, Let It Come Down, in 1998. It was an intimate, acoustic guitar-driven record which focused on the more personal side of his songwriting. During this period, he also co-founded indie label Scratchie Records, which went on to release albums by artists like The Sounds, The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr., Robbers On High Street and others. In the late 90’s James relocated to New York, where he opened Stratosphere Sound Recording Studios along with friends Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne/Ivy) and Andy Chase (Ivy).

In 2003, James joined the acclaimed progressive rock band, A Perfect Circle, featuring members of Tool and Marilyn Manson. He toured the world with APC for a year. After returning home from the tour, James focused on work in the studio: he scored several films, including Canadian indie feature Luck and Japanese indie Linda Linda Linda. More recently, he scored the Japanese indie film Kakera, which made the circuit at film festivals around the world. As a producer and remixer, James has worked with the likes of Michael Stipe, Cat Power, Morningwood, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Annie, Ladytron and The Sounds. He has also lent his guitar skills on albums by Whiskeytown, Isobel Campbell, Fountains Of Wayne, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Ivy and A Camp, among many others.

James’ recent collaborations include joining Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, Hanson’s Taylor Hanson, and Cheap Trick’s Bun E. Carlos to form the power-pop group Tinted Windows, whose critically-acclaimed self-titled debut album featured several Iha-penned songs, and spawned tours throughout the US and Japan. In 2010, James worked extensively with acclaimed Swedish band Raymond & Maria, to produce their new album, while in 2011, James produced the debut from up-and-coming Brooklyn band Hunters. James also continues to tour with A Perfect Circle, whose extensive 2011 included a mainstage performance at Lollapalooza.

James recently completed his first solo album in nearly 15 years, entitled LOOK TO THE SKY. The album, which features such guests as Shudder to Think’s Nathan Larson, Karen O and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara and Tom Verlaine, will be released this Winter on EMI Japan, with worldwide releases happening later this year.

Anamanaguchi Announce New Single & Video

The birth of Anamanaguchi must have taken place in the middle of mankind’s greatest sugar high. Oh, there could have been ‘shrooms there too, but we’re betting that it had more to do with loads and loads of pure cane sugar, swallowed in liquid, cubed, granulated or processed form. It was Jolt soda, cake, ice cream, candy and everything else in between. The rosy-cheeked little thing came out of the womb, was slapped on the ass by the jovial delivering doctor and started laughing hysterically, blowing disco ball kisses in between its unprecedented fits of joyous rapture.

The band, an electronic punk band from New York, wakes up daily from dreams of playing pop-punk at raves. It immediately set out to write punishing and inspired music that would win over legions of fans, from Questlove to Bryan Lee O’Malley. Following performances at Lollapalooza and Fun Fun Fun Fest, the band was essentially dubbed the second coming of Wyld Stallyns. And so, after years of singles, 7-inches, digital-only releases and the like, the band is preparing to give birth to its own new creation: A new album, Endless Fantasy, on their own new label, dream.hax. More news of the album is forthcoming, but in the meantime, dig the first single, “Meow,” and the accompanying video, premiered today on SPIN. The video, directed and edited by Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Editors Daniel Gray Longino and Eric Notarnicola, sees our heroes part ways to join different factions at a local Arcade, with deadly results. Which team are you on?

My Heart to Fear – New EP Lost Between Brilliance and Insanity

This five track EP wastes no time with getting their point across. Christian metal band My Heart to Fear make a bold statement with their post hardcore sound in more ways than one.

The first track, “Blood Money,” breaks out with an excellently distorted riff, almost as a preparatory image of what is to follow. Blood money espouses a motivating variability in structure, and I was particularly drawn to the groovy weight of the breakdown, followed by nothing other than a unique bass scale. Transitioning into the second track, “Life Under the Stairs,” envelops a sparing use of synth and gang vocals that are altogether unique and powerful. The August Burns Red style guitar harmonizing and great use of clean vocals take this to another level altogether creatively. Life Under Stairs transitions into a nightmarish horror-film style breakdown with paralyzing synchronization that makes you feel you could wake up any minute in a cold sweat. “Life Under the Stairs” is not only creative and different; it has conveniently burrowed itself into my subconscious!

“Legends Never Die” is beyond heavy and grueling. This five piece from Williamsport, Pennsylvania are choosing a new avenue with incorporation of synth and style of production altogether. Breakdowns accompanied by nice clean vibrato, and gang vocals in unison, “Family, Faith, Pride, Brotherhood” – four pillars that undoubtedly serve as a foundation for the existence of this project.

The fourth track, “Dear Mister White,” slows it down, and embodies energy and organized chaos in its truest form. This track will make you want to smash anything in your nearest reach while listening to this punching amplifier. Dear Mister White evolves toward a memorable riff with technically executed solos that don’t overstay their welcome.

The EP strongly sums with “The Witching Hour” favors extremely brisk harmonies in faultless accordance with one another. This track busts out several extremely killer breakdowns again, as if to recap the EP in a deathly farewell that draw us all to metal to begin with and maintain our adoration. The EP ends in an eerie and angelic vocal harmonization that really makes the message clear.

The entire EP is loaded with extremely cut-throat breakdowns and haunting lyrics that send a message to look within yourself, and walk away with an empowered attitude. These guys definitely know how to leave an impression. Hailing from Williamsport, PA myself, these guys are putting my hometown on the map for metal, (and give us something other than Little League). Lost Between Brilliance and Insanity maintains an altogether great live feel, and the longer you listen, the more clearly you can envision yourself in the pit surrounded by the energy and unrest that we all search for as fans.

Tea Leaf Green & Tumbleweed Wanderers Will Bring Americana To Mr. Smalls Feb 16th.

PMM’s Rob Eldridge will be on assignment to cover to very cool California bands: Tea Leaf Green and Tumbleweed Wanderers. See bio summaries below.

It ain’t easy being a gypsy, especially if one sings for their supper.  San Francisco’s Tea Leaf Green are newfangled Lost Boys, a traveling gang dedicated to seeking wisdom and experience in places both glorious and seedy.  In many ways, this quintet is the essence of rock’s adventurous, playfully outlaw spirit, all of which ultimately fuels songs that resonate with classic vibrations, open-ended possibilities and radio-ready charm.  TLG are bruised romantics with heavy minds and a lighthearted way with experimentation, as likely to jam out a number as they are to nail a primo verse-verse-chorus pop gem.

Oakland, California’s Tumbleweed Wanderers combine soul, folk, and rock and roll to create a hugely dynamic musical experience. They weave through their shows with smooth transitions, bringing the listener from dark chaotic banjo-rock, through intimate acoustic harmonies, to energetic explosions of soul.

Since forming in April of 2011, TW have been bringing their electric shows to an increasingly wider audience, from their early performances at small bars and cafes, to becoming a major local headliner, selling out shows at the Bay Area’s best venues such as Great American Music Hall and Bottom of the Hill. Since recording their debut full-length album, they have entered a period of near constant touring, starting on the West Coast, but now including all of North America, most recently opening for Angus Stone at renowned venues in the US and Canada.
