Whitechapel to tour with GWAR this Fall

Whitechapel is primed to hit the road with GWAR starting this October.

Masters of medieval metal, the mighty GWAR, are poised to return to the world of man as today they announced the first leg of their massive “Madness at the Core of Time” world tour, in support of their new album, Battle Maximus, which is out September 17th on Metal Blade Records. The tour, which features a completely brand-new show full of slavering creatures and deserving victims, is set to kick offOctober 2nd in Columbus, Ohio and runs through November 17th in Washington, DC. Tickets go on sale this Friday, August 2nd.

Overlord Oderus Urungus allowed Whitechapel guitarist Alex Wade to comment on the tour:

”We’re extremely excited to announce that we will be direct supporting the almighty GWAR this fall.  The tour will be hitting some spots we haven’t been in a while and we’re looking forward to having a blast on tour with them so come out and get GWAR’ed with us!”

Of course Oderus had more to say (when doesn’t he?):

“Let me make something perfectly clear. DON’T commit suicide if your city/country/collection of mud-huts isn’t on the list. We can’t play every city in the world in one tour, as much as we would like to. There will be a whole year or more of shows in support of Battle Maximus, so either be patient, or take a fucking road trip!”

Whitechapel Blew Up Club Zoo… Quite Literally

Hailing from Knoxville Tennessee, Whitechapel brings the heavy back to heavy metal.  There is no limit for how heavy their music can honestly get.  If you don’t believe me, just check-out their re-mastered version of their first album “The Somatic Defilement” that was just re-released not even a month ago.  After seeing Whitechapel numerous times since they started playing seven years ago, they keep getting better and better every single time and just keep raising the bar.  This time around was another story.  This would be a show just to kind of forget.  Not because of their performance, but because the venue could not handle the intensity of their music.  One would think that Club Zoo would have prepared for this concert a little bit better but they did not.  The sound was absolutely terrible the whole night for all of the bands.  Whitechapel just got the worst of it,  having technical problems the whole set from start to finish.  The speakers kept on giving out to the point where there was nothing even coming out of them.  People were beyond ticked off but who could blame them?  On another note, I give Whitechapel all the credit in the world for keeping it professional and staying on stage, plus getting the crowd really into it by helping them scream the songs and keeping it going… talk about fan support, which is probably the only reason why they even stayed on stage.  All and all it was still a solid performance by Whitechapel.  Club Zoo on the other hand is a place I would rather not step foot in again for not knowing how to run their own sound system, which ruined the show for a lot of people.  The good news is that Whitechapel is returning to Pittsburgh for their next tour which they will be headlining.  Believe me when I tell you that this is a band you do not want to miss, do not judge them from the show at Club Zoo, go see them again in a few months.

Century Media Records unites with SOAR in new label deal

Century Media Records has announced a worldwide partnership with reputable UK indie Siege Of Amida Records (known as SOAR).

This new deal sees SOAR utilized as a central launch pad for the Metal and Hardcore genres, focusing predominantly on the increasingly vibrant UK underground scene and launching emerging international acts onto the circuit.

Century Media is one of the leading independent labels in the industry, boasting a gigantic back catalogue and a roster that spans almost every sub-genre within the sphere, as well as a reputation for being one of the strongest metal labels in the world.

Century Media label manager Antje Lange says of the deal: “We feel honoured and excited to work with the highly acclaimed label Siege Of Amida. They’ve proved that they have the Midas touch and the instinct for catching great new bands early and we are confident that we can put the label to the next level, on a worldwide basis.”

After starting the careers of the likes of WHITECHAPEL, ANNOTATIONS OF AN AUTOPSY, HEART IN HAND, INGESTED, TRC and DYSCARNATE, as well as being the European vessel for US bands such as IMPENDING DOOM and MOLOTOV SOLUTION, SOAR is reputed for being one of the leading labels spearheading a movement of new exciting bands within extreme music. Many of their past bands are now with larger, internationally established labels such as Metal Blade, Victory, eOne and Nuclear Blast; this deal sees them no longer in the shadow of larger labels and able to compete with the heavyweights on every level.

SOAR Director Jamie Graham adds: “After 6 years of building this label from a comparatively low level, starting out in our bedrooms, we looked back at our catalogue of releases and at the bands that moved onto bigger labels and our current roster. We realized we had something special to build on there- Century and their team understand the vision I have for this label and this deal allows our distribution and promotional network to increase a hundred fold. Working with a company as diverse, reputable and ambitious as Century Media in order to take SOAR to the next stage is the logical step for us to take. It will mean great things for our artists and for the labels growth as a whole.”

The first release to emerge from this new partnership will be from fast-rising UK crew HEART IN HAND, releasing their second full length Almost There on May 13th.

Hatebreed, Whitechapel, All Shall Perish, & Deez Nuts Tear Up Stage AE 11/11/12

On the last night of their 10 Years of Perseverance Tour together, Hatebreed, Whitechapel, All Shall Perish, and Deez Nuts came to throw down one last time in Pittsburgh at Stage AE on the Northside. An unusually thin crowd, due to the simultaneous Steeler game, got the intimate treat of a lifetime with some surviving legends and some legends in the making.

Hatebreed brought the reputation they have built for so many years and backed it up with a hardcore set that had fans belting out the tunes in unison with the band. For many it was a throwback to their youthful times and the energy of the band and crowd combined for one eruptive set.

Relative newbies compared to Hatebreed’s career span, Whitechapel and All Shall Perish showed why they both are at the top of their genre. Some in the crowd were a bit put off by the growling lyrics that are not as easily understood as the headliners. But, there is a legion of fans who love the stylings of these bands. Many in the crowd sang right along with Whitechapel, knowing every word, including the new stuff. All Shall Perish also won over quite a few of that crowd who may not be as familiar with them. They had an outstanding set as well of in your face metal that combines guttural vocals, quick paced pounding rhythms and technically proficient guitars. The only band that seemed out of place was Deez Nuts who attempted to entertain the crowd with their brand of rap and hardcore metal with a Brooklyn attitude. Pittsburgh may not have responded very well, but there is a certain niche for bands like this, unfortunately for them they went the way of Fred Durst.

Whitechapel Is A Must See At Mayhem

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

PMM had a chance to sit down with the guys from Whitechapel at Rockstar Mayhem Festival. Trying to catch up with all the bands at Mayhem proved nearly impossible! Luckily the guys with Whitechapel understood and chatted with us as they ate dinner! Listen to it here: Whitechapel

Having spent several years lauded as one of the frontrunners in their genre, in 2012 Whitechapel stand as a defining force in contemporary heavy music. Building dramatically on the trademarked bludgeon of their first three releases, with Whitechapel the Tennessean sextet have inarguably delivered their most intense, dynamic, and downright hostile record to date. Drenched in atmospheric darkness, the record is also rife with gripping melodies that drag the listener in to the tumult, willing or otherwise, and across its ten tracks it is infused with an emotional depth that pointedly separates the band from the plethora of two-dimensional mosh-starters that have sprung up in their wake. “These songs are some of the best material we have released to date, and the whole vibe of the record compelled us to self- title it,” states guitarist Alex Wade. “With every record we strive for something different – we’re always going to stay true to what Whitechapel is, but we want to evolve and do something that is fresh and engaging both for ourselves and for the people who support us.”
Setting the scene with the brooding piano that prefaces the storm of frantic riffs and pulverizing drums of opener “Make It Bleed”, it is clear that Whitechapel are coming from a place of pure darkness this time out. At times teetering on the brink of despair while always primed to fight anything and everything that gets in their way, every track has its own personality, fitting perfectly alongside each other to form a breathtaking whole. From the heads down attack of “Section 8” or the merciless “(Cult)uralist” to the apocalyptic drama of “Dead Silence” or the loping grooves of “Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence” the band put it all on the line, creating something that is as honest as it is devastating. “There’s a lot of variety on this record – it has the fastest songs we’ve ever written on it, but it also has the slowest songs we’ve ever written, so whether you like the slower grooves of A New Era Of Corruption (2010) or the really fast riffs of This Is Exile (2008) there is something for everyone on this album,” explains Wade. “It also has a much stronger sense of dynamics, because if you’re just smashing someone over the head one hundred percent of the time it can get monotonous, and there’s more melody to it too. Some of the choruses are really dark but have so much melody you could almost sing over them – which is something we would never do, but having that dynamic there is exciting to us.” Having grown displeased over time with A New Era Of Corruption, primarily due to the fact it was comprised of songs written by individual members rather than as a shared effort, the band rectified this with Whitechapel, and Wade believes this collaboration plays a large part in what sets the record apart from its predecessor. “In the credits of the last record it was like this guy wrote this song, and then this guy wrote that song, whereas there’s so much collaboration on this record it wasn’t worth going through it to try and list it in the credits, it is the product of our efforts. I think that’s cool, and it’s good to know that when we work together we’re at our finest.”
A further contributing factor to the record’s power is the addition of drummer Ben Harclerode (ex-Knights Of The Abyss), who joins Wade and guitarists Ben Savage and Zach Householder, bassist Gabe Crisp, and vocalist Phil Bozeman. “Most drummers that we had seen play our songs would kinda have to dumb it down rather than play it exactly the way it was on the record, but Ben sent us a video of him playing “Reprogrammed To Hate” and every single note, every little cymbal accent was there, so we were extremely blown away by how he had replicated what Kevin Lane had played on previous albums,” Wade states. “He sent us another video playing the much faster “Father Of Lies” and after that we knew we had to get him down to jam with us. He learned an eleven-song setlist, turned up, sat down behind the kit, and we ran through the whole set without stopping, it was like he had been in the band for years. The power and precision he brings to Whitechapel is just amazing, and having him in with us writing the new record definitely took that side of things to the next level.”
While frontman Phil Bozeman has proven himself one of the most formidable vocalists and lyricists in metal of the last few years, his previous efforts pale in comparison to his contributions to Whitechapel. “While it’s definitely brutal I would say that first and foremost it’s a dark and depressing record,” he states. “I didn’t go for one big concept that unites all the songs this time out, I just wrote about whatever I was feeling. I like that it’s kind of scattered and covers a lot of topics, and I think that’s an important part of the record’s power.” Whether ruminating on his general disillusionment with humanity (“Faces”), decrying the sheep-like nature of society as people allow themselves to be led rather than standing up as leaders themselves (“(Cult)uralist”), or giving in to the belief that there is no hope for the future (“Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence”), Bozeman never pulls a punch, and his vocal performance is equally unflinching. “I didn’t want to just have the same monotone kind of screaming, I wanted to branch out and really get the emotion behind it across. This was about getting so angry you just had to let it all out. You’re not even worrying about how good it sounds, you’re just yelling out of pure spite and rage, and I think that really comes across. I didn’t want anyone listening to it thinking it’s just the same old bullshit. We’re better than that.”
Working with producer Mark Lewis (Deicide, Devildriver), according to Wade it was not until they were in the studio and the songs started coming together that the band realized just how good a record they were making. “Honestly, everyone at the beginning of this record was kind of iffy about it,” he laughs wryly. “As we were putting the demos together we were like yeah, this stuff’s pretty cool but we were a little worried about it. But then when we got in there with Mark, every time we added a layer it just got better and better.” Blown away by Harclerode’s razor sharp performance and the huge drum sound engineered by Lewis, a killer guitar tone infusing the wealth of punishing riffs with life, and a monstrous bass sound kicking things in the ass, at every turn the band’s enthusiasm grew. “It was all just coming together amazingly, and as soon as Phil did his vocals it was like oh my God! This is our favorite record!”
Returning to their rightful place on the road, the band are enthused to take these new songs to their rabid fan base. They stand confident in their belief that their followers will hungrily devour the latest evolution of their sound, and having dramatically bolstered their fan base through blowing away the unsuspecting crowds on 2010’s Warped Tour they are sure to draw in new adherents anywhere they play. While Wade firmly believes that the band are still growing and striving to improve, for now he could not be happier with the fruits of their labor. “Every band at some point plateaus, it’s inevitable, but we’re not there yet, we’re still growing, and I think this record proves that. Looking at the finished thing – the music, the vocals, the overall vibe behind it, all the way down to the mix and the master – it’s almost like a perfect storm where everything came together just right and resulted in the record that we needed to put out.”
Whitechapel’s self-titled, fourth album, is available now!

The tour features direct support from Whitechapel and special guests All Shall Perish and Deez Nuts, and kicks off on September 13th in Clifton Park, NY.

Perseverance is recognized worldwide as a landmark album in HATEBREED’s musical catalog—an album that skyrocketed the band to immediate leader-of-the-pack status after its release. Released on March 26, 2002, the band’s second full-length studio album blasted open the doors of American DIY Hardcore in mainstream culture with songs such as ‘I Will Be Heard’, ‘A Call For Blood’ and the album’s title track, ‘Perseverance’. Since the release of Perseverance, the fusion of hardcore and metal has been emulated and evolved relentlessly, but never duplicated with the same originality and brutality that HATEBREED accomplished with their first major-label release.

Perseverance debuted within the top 50 of the Billboard Top 200 chart and has since gone on to sell roughly half a million copies worldwide.
