VOIVOD release Kluskap O’Kom Video 7″ single and BEER

Canadian progressive metal pioneers VOIVOD recently released a video for the song, “Kluskap O’Kom”. The video was directed by Syl Disjonk, known for his short horror film, Ethereal Chrysalis. The director of photography was JP Bernier (Despised Icon). The video originally premiered at Philip H. Anselmo’s Housecore Horror FilmFestival in October in Austin, TX and can be viewed here…

Kluskap O’Kom (Official Video):

When asked about the meaning of Kluskap O’Kom, vocalist Denis “Snake ” Bélanger had this to say:

Sometimes described as a giant coming out of the woods, sometimes a monster in a lake or sometimes a powerful being that came from the sky, Kluskap is the name for this strange character and O’Kom is the place where he lives. Kluskap is inspired by a legend from a Canadian native tribe called the Micmacs. He once came to earth to kill all the Dinosaurs in order to help the humans to take over the planet. One day Kluskap will come back with another mission to the humans. There are many similarities between the Kluskap story and other legends from tribes all around the globe; stories told of encounters with beings from other worlds. This one is very unique I thought. So here it is; Hear the thunder, it is me, coming back!!!! KlusKap O’Kom!

Voivod also released a 7″ for the song, taken from their Target Earth, LP, the 7″ features artwork from Voivod drummer Michael “Away” Langevin, is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. The b-side features a live version of Kluskap O’Kom recorded in Berlin on the band’s last European headlining tour. The single comes in black, grey and black and white swirl colored vinyl and can be purchased here (http://www.cmdistro.com/Search/kluskap)

In related news, the band recently partnered with a local Montreal brewery to produce a limited batch of “Kluskap O’Kom” beer. Guitarist, Dan “Chewy” Mongrain elaborates:

Frederic Cormier , the brewer and owner of Hopfenstark Micro-Brewery, and I had this Idea for a couple years of crafting a Voivod beer. This year, with the new album, Target Earth, and our 30th Anniversary, the timing was perfect to celebrate and brew! So I asked the guys if they were into it and everybody thought it was a great Idea! We sampled different types of ale, lager, stout, IPA, season, wheat etc to come up with the type of beer we wanted to do. We also talked about the concept and decided to associate the Voivod beer not only with the band’s name but with a song from the latest opus. We choose Kluskap O’Kom, which is inspired by American-Indian legends and modern reality. We wanted the beer to have a taste from the woods, the terroir, so to speak. So Frederic had this idea of crafting the beer with Mugwort and Balsam Fir which we ended up picking up in the woods. The beer is made with fresh ingredients; it’s easy to drink yet with complex well balanced flavors. We just invited friends and fans to the release party in Montreal at Station Ho.st (bar owned by the brewer) and it was a complete success! Lots of people celebrating the 30th anniversary of Voivod, making toasts with a Kluskap O`Kom beer listening to some Voivod, watching a 2 hours “making of” the beer, plus we had a surprise when our director friend showed up with a DVD to play the promo video of Kluskap O’ Kom!! It was a perfect magical evening…I ended up going to bed at 6am…smiling, how could life be better than that?

“‘Tides of War’ offers music that is well done and fueled with the propensity of delivering solid melodic death/thrash.” – Blistering.com

“Fans of modern thrash, who like it furious, biting and yet melodic check Chariots of The Gods.” – Lords of Metal

“There’s a lot on ‘Tides of War’ to pique the interest of either thrash or melodic death metal fans, and the non-stop galloping guitar sound is an impressive display of what the underground can achieve.” – MetalUnderground.com

“It is heavy, brutal and energetic while also incorporating a fair amount of melody to boot!…This is an album that is definitely going to raise the bar in the extreme music scene for the remainder of the year. Pick this one up; you won’t regret it!” – PureGrainAudio.com

“CHARIOTS OF THE GODS are showing plenty of promise to be able to be one of Canada’s next big things out there” – Metal Observer

“An incredibly professional production is at hand: drums are clear; vocals are on the perfect level with the instruments; even the soft and quiet moments are balanced just right so as to create bits of atmosphere against the heaviness. There is a pure love of metal evident in this debut and the production lets all the power, aggression, and passion through to the listener…the band confidently establishes their intention: a charge of solid and unyielding melodeath garnished with impeccable interludes, solos, and leads.” – MetalStorm

“CHARIOTS OF THE GODS, with their first full-length release ”Tides Of War”,is sure to be the new buzz of the underground scene…Overall, the album is an eclectic, vibrant, and colorful release that really keeps listeners head banging all the way and appreciating the good work the band has put in. The production is clearly strong, coming from the hands of Glen Robinsonwho has worked with Metal legends such as ANNIHILATOR and QUEENSRYCHE…The band does its best, and boy is it good, to church out infectious hook after hook, coupled with blistering melodies and kickass solos backed by Jobin’s great vocals. Each band member shines in this album and their dedication and devotion to their music is clear from the start…The entire album is structured in a genius way—these guys are clearly gifted lads.” – Metal-Temple

“Splendid stuff from a young Canadian troupe that would appear to have all the tricks… I love their coruscating mix of Maidenesque harmonies (have a listen to the awesome Blind Assassin and tell me you ain’t impressed)” – MetalAsFuck

“”Tides of War” is an album that rivals classics by acts such as God Forbid, Shadows Fall, and Killswitch Engage in excellence and pays respectful homage to acts like In Flames, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, and Dark Tranquility. For my money, this debut album deserves the status as a melodeath-type of metal classic. 5/5″ – MetalMusicArchives

“The best thing about this band, in my view, is the powerful melodic style they bring to each song. The guitarists are especially strong on several tracks, including “Tides of War,” “Revillusion (1905),” and “Unbound.” I loved the instrumental track “Snow Falls on the White River (1914),” yet another piece of evidence that these guys have a keen sense of melody, at times, one that even approaches beauty. Mathiew St-Amour and Dimitri Gervais play their guitars with grace and precision and sound especially great on their harmonized parts. These guys have a bright future as twin guitar leads and I hope they’ll take advantage of what they can do together. Readers who like their guitars to come in pairs will love this album.” – SeaofTranquility

“COTG entice the listener with infectious hooks, associated melodies and some blistering solos out of the guitar work. If that is not justice enough for you to buy this, then listen to the intensity of Renaud Jobin’s vocals. This is a release that requires you to strap your balls down (if you have them of course!) when the volume is cranked up…They have a fantastic musical ability and a gift of song structure that exhumes listeners emotions that includes anger and conversely serenity and the need to throw the devil horns without too much though will therefore result. ‘Tides of War’ promotes Chariots of the Gods as real contenders in their field of metal, their field of glory and the rewards are presented for everyone on these exceptional fourteen tracks defining a generation of musically gifted individuals who do not rely purely on breakdowns to get their point across, it sounds effortless. Horn’s raised high gents! 4/5″ – Brutalism.com

“Overture is quite sweet sounding and feels like a film score. Nothing compared to the monster that is waiting to be unleashed. Ferocious riffs and classic metal vocals. Drums blasting out the speed and blasts and the guitars giving it a chunky edge whilst maintains some harmony. Hatebreed hardcore edge but throws in the melody. Definitely an innovative sound amongst a sea of similar sounds. Chariots of the Gods definitely seem to offer something that little bit different. Taking the generic metal sound and throwing in delicious guitar solos with a conflicting vocal. Upbeat without being cheesy.” – Culutre Bomb Mag

”I’m honored to be a part of this project” – Glen Robinson (producer)

”It’s pretty good!” – Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)

”In my opinion, Chariots of the Gods is THE melodic thrash metal revelation in Canada this year” – Musique d’une Nation

”Excellent album full of energy […] I may have a man-crush on Chariots of the Gods”
Ondes Chocs

”I wouldn’t be surprised to see ‘Tides of War’ be a strong beginning this year in the field of melodic death metal.” Dagheisha

”Just pure metal […] it’s a real treat to the ears” – Metal Manic

”My first reaction was ”WOW!” […] If you like death metal, you have to get that CD” – WTFMusic.com

”It’s a masterpiece” – Radiorockdrummond.com

”Mathieu-Phillipe St-Amour is undoubtedly a promosing guitarist” – dagheisha.com

”A band to admire […] amazing collaboration of Heavy Metal and Death Metal […] no less than perfect” – Metal Temple

”An excellent band who knows what they are doing […] Listen to them and you’ll discover something great” – Dave Lemire (Concert promoter)

”Chariots of the Gods […] are doing everything right […] they are talented and powerful enough to show the world Canada rocks hard” – Metal Bite

”I am stoked to discover new talent from Ottawa […] Chariots of the Gods is an erruption waiting to happen”  -The Ottawa Epitaph

“Hands down, CHARIOTS OF THE GODS have worked hard and have improved their songwriting that shines in “Tides Of War” in every aspect. Don’t be fooled by the melodic Death Metal tag and consider the Canadians just another IN FLAMES wannabe because there is more than just catchy riffs and growling vocals. And don’t forget that CHARIOTS OF THE GODS come from Canada that is a most reliable source for high quality Metal. 8/10″ – MetalKaoz.com

VOIVOD begins work on “Target Earth” video; video stills posted online

Canadian progressive metal pioneers VOIVOD have begun work on a video for the title track of their Century Media debut album, Target Earth. The video, created by Italian filmmaker and multimedia artist, Nicola Piovesan, will recreate in 3D Motion Graphics the visions and artwork of VOIVOD drummer, Away (Michel Langevin). You can check out stills from the work-in-progress video here:

Recorded at producer Pierre Rémillard’s Wild Studios in Quebec and mixed by Sanford Parker (PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM), Target Earth features artwork by drummer Away (Michel Langevin), who used color schemes from each one of the band’s previous albums to make this new masterpiece. The album brings back original bass player, Blacky (Jean Yves Thériault), marking his first recordings with the band since 1991’s Angel Rat. It’s also the first to feature guitarist Chewy (Daniel Mongrain), who cut his teeth playing guitar to the late Piggy’s (Denis D’Amour) riffs, and thus has matched his style to a tee. VOIVOD, as a full group, hadn’t sat down to write a record together since 2003’s self-titled album. The end result harkens back to the group’s late 80s output and after 30 years together as a band, one of their best yet.

To purchase Target Earth, please visit iTunes for a digital copy or CM Distro for various album formats.

Voivod Targets Earth: An Interview with Dan “Chewy” Mongrain

Voivod has become synonimous with gaining one’s true understanding of the history of metal. Hailing from Jonquière, Québec, Canada, Voivod started out in the early 80’s and has been astounding our ears with their unique brand of speed, thrash, and prog metal that has been so influential and inspirational to so many in the biz today. With their new release, Target Earth, and recording with Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (who replaced Denis D’Amour due to his unfortunate death), Voivod is ready for an amazing 2013. Pittsburgh Music Magazine had a chance to speak with Dan about the band’s plans and what else is happening in the world of Voivod…

What are Voivod’s plans for touring?

Hi there! Well, after the album’s out in January, we’re gonna tour as much as we can and at as many places as we can. We’re going to Chile in April for a start, gonna probably do shows before that of course. As for touring Europe and the states, there is nothing I can talk about right now, but we’re gonna go there for sure! It’s gonna be a busy year for Voivod!

How was your studio experience, considering this is your first time recording with the band?

It was just fantastic! We worked well together as a team, the vibe was awesome. It’s one of the best creative journeys I’ve experienced so far in my career.

The music business has changed so much since the inception of Voivod. How are the members adapting to the new ways of promotion and communication?

I think we’re doing pretty good, but I think the best way to promote the band is still touring since it advertises us in as many places possible. That’s where the music, the very core of your art, is at its best– when it’s live.

Do you have any favorite pieces from the new effort?

I have a hard time finding any “favorite” things in life, it changes all the time. It depends on how I feel. I’m very proud of the whole album. It’s like asking a parent if they have a favorite child…
It’s kind of a trap. I really enjoy playing “Mechanical Mind” and “Kluskap O’ Kom” onstage, I love the outro of the album. I dig “Warchaic” for its dynamics and build up. I also like “Empathy for the Enemy” for its melodic and progressive sides…I appreciate the whole album really, each song for a different reason.

Can you give our readers a bit of a rig rundown?

In the studio, it was just my Gibson Les Paul classic with Burstbuckers pick-ups through a JCM 800 and a Marshall 4×12 cabinets with greenback speaker. Also, I doubled each track with a Triple rectifier through a Hiwat Cab. I used my custom made Liberatore for some solos and my Fender thin-line telecaster in a Tone King amp for clean sounds.
On tour I just use a Radial Plexitube tone bone distortion pedal through a T.C Electronic G-Major for FX, then send the signal to a JCM 800 or a Mesa dual rectifier on the clean channel for EQ only. That’s it. I use a voodoo lab Ground Control pro as pedal switcher and a RJM Mini effect Gizmo as loop switcher.

Do you believe that there are aliens, and if so, why?

I believe in forms of life in other places than the earth because it seems very logical and probable to me.

What are your favorite bands to cover or jam to?

Besides Voivod? Hahaha! I don’t have such a hobby. I prefer to practice and learn country licks or Jazz improvisation concepts. Transcribe some songs or solos…I mean, I’m teaching music in college full time, and I’m involved in at least three serious projects, plus I’m a freelance musician, so when I have spare time…I usually do something else than music. Like beer tasting at my favorite Micro-Brewery (Hopfenstark), fishing, or riding my bicycle.

Any new bands that you really like out there now?

New bands…Like I said, I’m not a big music listener for now because I’m pretty much 24/7 into music.
The last band that caught my attention is a band called Virus from Norway. They made me want to listen to more music again.

Recorded at producer Pierre Rémillard’s Wild Studios in Quebec and mixed by Sanford Parker (PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM), Target Earth features artwork by drummer Away, who used color schemes from each one of the band’s previous albums to make this new masterpiece. The album brings back original bass player, Blacky (Jean Yves Thériault), marking his first recordings with the band since 1991’s Angel Rat. It’s also the first to feature guitarist Chewy, who cut his teeth playing guitar to the late Denis D’Amour’s riffs, and thus has matched his style to a tee. VOIVOD, as a full group, hadn’t sat down to write a record together since 2003’s self-titled album. The end result harkens back to the group’s late 80s output and after 30 years together as a band, one of their best yet.

VOIVOD Signs with Century Media Records

Century Media Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Quebecois progressive metal pioneers VOIVOD! To coincide with the band’s 30th Anniversary – the band was founded in late January, 1983 – VOIVOD’s own company, Iron Gang Factory, joins with global powerhouse Century Media Records to release Target Earth on January 21st throughout Europe and the 22nd in North America. Comments, the band:

“Our goal has been to find a partner for Iron Gang Factory to help get new VOIVOD music to the world and Century Media, we are proud to say, is the right company to do so globally We can’t wait to release, tour, and promote ‘Target Earth.'”

VOIVOD’s career path has endured as many shifts and disturbances as the music itself. From major label deals and big-time tours to slogging it out in clubs while metal went through growing pains in the mid 1990s; from high profile bass players to unknown substitutes, the Quebecois prog metal pioneers have persevered through thick and thin to arrive at a comfortable place in 2012 — a place of rebirth, rejuvenation and respect.

VOIVOD’s 30th anniversary celebrates their career as one of metal’s most influential bands. The handful of live albums, reissues and DVDs that began to surface in the past ten years proved how beloved this band really is, and now comes another album of inspired fresh material that proves VOIVOD still have many new paths to travel. What band continues to redefine and reinvent themselves 13 studio albums and 30 years into their career? There is only one answer to that question: VOIVOD.
