An Intimate Acoustic Evening with Parachute | Mr. Smalls | 9.21.17

Abigail McNatt

Acoustic sets are honestly the greatest kinds of sets. Sure it is great to dance and scream along to your favorite songs, but there is something so raw and real about your favorite band performing their music stripped down and unplugged. That’s what Parachute’s current tour is all about.
On the first half of the tour, ending in Pittsburgh, they brought along Johnny Balik. Balik is from Toronto, Canada and his music is categorized as pop/R&B/soul. This was the first I had heard of him and damn am I glad I did. HIGHLY recommend checking him out. His voice is pure and raw and real and fantastic. He does what I like to call, sing-rap where he minorly sings a rap and it just flows so well. He played some originals as well as a cover or so, in his half hour set. The ladies loved him. Now, being that it was an acoustic show, there were chairs set up in aisles. So girls weren’t freaking out, especially being that he was playing acoustic as well. But they did woo and wow him throughout the set and created a long line afterwards when he stood by the merch table to meet fans. I was not a part of that group, but I certainly did enjoy his set, so much. He opened his mouth during the first song and I was like, “damn he is good.” It was his last stop on the tour and he definitely gave it his all, so bravo.
Half an hour after Balik’s set, Parachute came on. The setup was much different than their last tour when I saw them last year. They had a keyboard on stage right, a stool and mic in the middle, and a drum set stage left. Members Kit French (vocals, sax, and keyboard), Will Anderson (lead vocals, guitar, piano), and Johnny Stubblefield (drums) made their way to their spots on stage. It felt just as surreal to me as it did the first time I got to see and shoot them. I got so caught up in the show itself as well as taking photos that I forgot to write down the set list. They changed it from show to show too. During their set though they played music from all of their albums. They included a couple songs from their newly released album, “Wide Awake“, such as ‘Jennie’ and ‘Lonely With Me’. As per usual, Will likes to talk and being an acoustic show like this, there was plenty of time for that. Will talked about his wife, Courtney a bit and their different writing styles and being in Pittsburgh, he talked about his love and obsession with Heinz Ketchup and how he wrote them a letter and they sent him back a bunch of packets. Another story he likes to tell at shows is about the ever so popular, ‘Forever and Always‘. That song is so sad. So sad that it needs a disclaimer attached to it. But as he says every show, it’s not real. He made it up. He told the crowd about how an old man came up to him after their set one time and he said he was sorry, but Will didn’t have the heart to tell him it wasn’t real. After that little anecdote, they played the song and the crowd sang along. They played some oldies as well, such as ‘She Is Love‘ and ‘All That I Am‘. Parachute also inserted a cover of ‘Issues’ by Julia Michaels in there. One fan screamed she was so excited they started to play it. Normally, that wouldn’t phase anyone but again, it was an acoustic show. They played my favorite, ‘Kiss Me Slowly’ and I was just on Cloud 9. From their 2013 release “Overnight”, they played the likes of ‘Drive You Home’ and ‘Didn’t See It Coming’. They ended their set, ironically, with one of their longer songs, ‘Philadelphia’. Fans, like myself, were captivated by the band the entire night and didn’t want it to end. That is the kind of show they put on, acoustic or full set. Their music really makes you feel things you may or may not have felt before and it is an awesome thing to be able to sing along to them. I have been a fans of theirs for some time now and it only seems to get stronger the more music they release and the more shows I attend.
Their tour continues on the west coast so if you will be out there anytime soon, I suggest grabbing a ticket (they’re ridiculously cheap) and grab your friend or significant other, or even treat yourself to a show. You will be just as hypnotized as all of us were last night.

Darto Coming to Pittsburgh Oct 3 (For fans of: Cate Le Bon, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Ryder, This Will Destroy You)

Darto Releases ‘Human Giving’ LP and joint Darto / WAND 7” plus New Video for ‘No-Self’
U.S. release on September 8.  U.K. release on September 22.

““I Am” is a catchy sultry melancholic downtempo synth-infused psych-trip combining the best of Cate Le Bon, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and The Black Ryder. The keyboards and strings seemingly propel the movement and the lyrics with instrumentation seem to induce a trance-like feeling” – The Big Takeover Magazine

“Experimental rock outfit Darto are into something. That something is called dichotomy. Mixing together adventurousness with playfulness, they have crafted a sound that is both challenging and accessible. This can be heard on recent track ‘No Self’. With repetitive and hypnotic vocals, jagged guitar stabs, and yet a lightness that is endearing, the track pushes the boundaries but at no time does the track lose sight of what is most important. Namely, that’s being memorable” – Overblown Magazine

Aagoo Records has just released two packages of goodness simultaneously: The first is ‘Human Giving’, a full length album from Seattle-based four-piece Darto. The second is the ‘Follow Up / Hush’7” featuring Darto and WAND, who wrote and performed these tracks together. Today they also released the new creepy video for ‘No-Self’.

‘Human Giving’ was preceded by the single ‘I Am’, which The Big Takeover Magazine calls “a catchy sultry melancholic downtempo synth-infused psych-trip combining the best of Cate Le Bon, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and The Black Ryder”.

The album’s mood is immediately clear from the first note of ‘GDLS’, enveloping the space around the listener. By the time ‘I Am’ enters, the sound and feeling transitions from lush and inviting, to focused and intentional with the keyboards and strings propelling the movement. The lyrics and accompanying melodies float along seamlessly like being lulled into a dream.

“Despite all of its catchy qualities, ‘Human Giving’ is a difficult album to pin down. The lyrical phrasing, and melodies have been stuck in my head for months,” says Alec Dartley of Aagoo Records. “It takes me to a place filled with light, despite the psych realms the band takes us”.
As the record progresses, splashes of Americana seem to emerge, painting subtle pictures of the American West, or a vast expanse that we would associate it with. It’s a momentary visit to those places as Darto keeps moving, exploring new worlds. The album closes in a cinematic soft way, where the constant is an emotional hook that dives into the human condition. This is an open story, suggestive but with room for the listener to fill in the blanks.
“We didn’t play shows or hardly go to shows for a year and a half so we could write and record the album,” says Darto’s Gordon De Los Santos. “The album comes from the places within us where hope and love exist. Where the focus is not on the self, and where everything is possible. Humans giving themselves to other humans. The power of listening on all fronts. The desired effect is and was to bring hope in some capacity.”
“We are extremely proud of this record. Writing, recording, mixing and mastering was the most intentional musical experience we have had to date. We took a lot of chances on it, and grew exponentially in the process,” says Gregory Flores. It felt, and feels like we walked through many doors while working on it, and the place we ended up is very similar to the place where we were as young people first deciding to create. A vulnerable first step towards something larger.”

Darto is Gordon De Los Santos, Gregory Flores, Candace Harter, Nicholas Merz. ‘Human Giving’ was recorded by Darto between September 2015 and January 2016 in a cabin in Cle Elum, WA and their home in Seattle. The ‘Follow Up / Hush’ 7″ was written, performed and recorded by Darto and Wand at Comp-ny in Burbank, CA in April 2017. It was engineered and recorded by Be Hussey. Both releases were mixed by Cory Hanson at Comp-ny and mastered by JJ Golden at Golden Mastering in Ventura, CA.

“We smashed together in Los Angeles and wrote these two songs; repurposed lyrics we wrote in the studio together.  A lot of people got to sing who had never sung on record before,” says Cory Hanson of WAND. “All in all, this was a successful collaboration I think. The spirit of both bands made it onto the tape together, intact.  We ate breakfast burritos the next morning, then Darto flew away.  I went to go to the beach but our car died in Topanga Canyon”.

Aagoo Records is home to vinyl releases by Xiu Xiu, Lucky Dragons, The Use with Rachelm Mason, Philippe Petit and more. ‘Human Giving’ can now be ordered in physical format from Aagoo Records’ websiteand digitally via Darto’s Bandcamp.

Oct 21 @Mr.Smalls // LANY — #1 New Artist on Billboard and Spotify

LA-based band LANY has launched the Kinda Tour, coming to Pittsburgh on Friday, October 21stat Mr. Smalls!

LANY will be on tour to support their latest EP kinda and just completed a number of summer festivals such asBonaroo, Firefly, Hangout, Outside Lands and more. As the most streamed artist through Spotify‘s Discover Weekly feature, their songs have garnered over 22 million streams on Spotify alone. Billboard also recently announced that LANY is the number one emerging artist after the release of the music video for their single “yea, babe, no way.”

Sounds Like: Electronic pop mixing Eighties flash, blue-eyed soul, and the ongoing search for genuine

connection on a smart phone

For Fans of: Phoenix, fun., Glass Animals

Rolling Stone

“Finding the balance between sensuality and mystery in music is a very delicate process.  Some seem born with the right skill set, like the almighty Prince, effortlessly blending their melodies with the right amounts of desperation and longing. Now, [LANY] are tapping into that same rare talent…” –  Consequence of Sound

“…contains the type of moving intimacy that has attracted the attention of pop, R&B and electronica fans over the past few months.” – Billboard

“LANY are the alternative synth threesome out to take over not just the East and West coasts of America but the entire world…” – Wonderland

Leading the charge is alternative group LANY, whose single “ILYSB” is the most-streamed of all the songs that have ever been featured on Discover Weekly. The band is also the most-streamed act ever from the feature, so it’s clear that when the world grows to know LANY and they begin selling out arenas, they will have to thank Spotify for at least some of that success. – FORBES

“LANY are the alternative synth threesome out to take over not just the East and West coasts of America but the entire world…” – Wonderland

LANY recently concluded their first headline tour which SOLD OUT well before the band played the first show, with the demand to accommodate fans resulting in extra dates being added and rooms extended.  With performances at Bonnaroo, Sasquatch and Firefly, as well as 14-dates opening for Oh Wonder already under their belt this summer, the trio will also be performing at Outside Lands and Life is Beautiful later this year. PRESS HERE for more information.

LANY (comprised of Paul Klein, Les Priest and Jake Goss) happened organically.  It began when the former school friends collaborated on songs that Klein had written and within days they had created a clutch of anthems that were too good to ignore.  Even at this early stage, their songs have connected on a large scale: the blissful dream-pop of “ILYSB” made big waves when they put it online and has over 15 million Spotify plays so far.  Their single “Where The Hell Are My Friends” is already nudging 4 million plays in a matter of weeks.  LANY create music that makes the intimate feel universal and connects them indelibly with their growing fanbase.

BATTLECROSS And WOVENWAR To Kick Off North American Tour With Soilwork, Unearth, And Darkness/ @Diesel Pittsburgh 11/12

Metal Blade lablemates BATTLECROSS and WOVENWAR will kick off their North American Fury tour tonight supporting Soilwork and Unearth. Set to commence in Providence, Rhode Island, the trek will coil its way through over two dozen venues, coming to a close on November 16th in Toronto, Ontario. Additional support will be provided by Darkness Divided.
Following the journey, BATTLECROSS will close 2016 with a three-week headlining run: the third installment of the Winter Warriors Tour. This year, support will be provided by Metal Blade labelmates Allegaeon and Necromancing The Stone. In conjunction with the Veterans Ticket Foundation, the Winter Warriors Tour will once again offer free admission to members of the US Armed Forces, and the band will donate a portion of their proceeds to local veterans’ organizations in each city. Veterans are invited to register for free tickets at BATTLECROSS will be touring in support of their latest album, Rise To Power, which landed on the Billboard charts at #103, marking the band’s second Billboard chart entry (2013’s War Of Will entered the charts at #130). To preview and purchase Rise To Power, visit:
On October 21st, WOVENWAR will release their sophomore album, Honor Is Dead. More aggressive and fluid than its self-titled predecessor, Honor Is Dead was written with contributions from all members, while the music for Wovenwar was mostly written before vocalist Shane Blay joined the band. The results speak for themselves, capturing a group that sounds truly unified, and hungry. Expanding upon the ruthlessly catchy melodies and hooks of their debut and driven by darker lyrical themes, Honor Is Dead makes for a listening experience with true depth, and a broad emotional range. To hear latest single, “World On Fire,” visit at THIS LOCATION where a drum play through for the track can be viewed, alongside an exclusive interview with drummer Jordan Mancino. For preorder info and to check out a concept video (by the band’s own Nick Hipa) for “Censorship” visit:

EYEHATEGOD To Kick Off US Tour With Discharge And Toxic Holocaust

Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe will be filling in for EYEHATEGOD vocalist Mike IX Williams on their upcoming Fall tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust.
Elaborates Williams of the decision, “Once again, rather than cancel an amazing tour, we have chosen for EYEHATEGOD to continue on and give one-thousand-percent. This 2016 Discharge tour is super important to me as that band has been a huge influence on my life, but my health situation right now dictates that I am not able to take the stage and perform to the best of my abilities every single night. This is where our good friend Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God comes into the picture. We’ve known Randall since the early ‘90s when EYEHATEGOD would pass through Virginia and he’d offer for us to crash at his crib after our gigs. Great times and we became great friends. To have Mr. Blythe on board as a fill in for me on vocals for this run is a true ‘circle-stays-unbroken’ turn of events! Coming off the heels of Philip Anselmo doing vocals for EYEHATEGOD on two high profile shows [last month’s performances at Southport Music Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana and the 2016 edition of Gwar BQ in Richmond, Virginia respectively], both of these men are at the top of their game. I am getting the medical help I need and will return to the band as soon as possible. Thank you, everybody… ”
Adds Blythe, “Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a massiveEYEHATEGOD fan. I’ve seen them play more times than I can remember, my old side project covered ‘Dixie Whiskey’ for anEYEHATEGOD tribute album, I wear their merch, I even have a freakingEYEHATEGOD tattoo that I got in New Orleans. They are one of my favorite bands of all time, period. I’ve also been friends with the guys in the band since the ‘90s… actually, I knew them before I knew the dudes in my own band, and EYEHATEGOD would often crash at my crib when they came through Richmond. So it’s a bit difficult for me to say, ‘I’m super-happy that I’ve been asked to fill in for Mike IX Williams on this upcoming tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust.’ In fact, I can’t honestly say that at all because, once again as a fan and, more importantly, a friend, no one would rather see Mike do this tour more than myself. Mike IX is THE voice of EYEHATEGOD, and I respect him as a friend, musician, and writer way too much to ever think otherwise. What Ican say is that I am beyond honored to be serving a brief tour of duty on vocals with EYEHATEGOD for this upcoming run.
When I was asked to fill in for Mike IX due to his health issues, I immediately said, ‘I’ll do it, as long as all of the guys in the band are cool with it, especially Mike; it can’t be any other way.’ I know from talking to him that Mike is very, very bummed to not be on this tour, especially given the fact that the legendary Discharge is one of his all-time favorite bands. In light of that fact alone, it’s a huge testament to the man’s character that he’s being gracious enough to let the band continue to work while he concentrates on his medical issues, which are entirely legitimate and prevent him from taking the stage night after night. The other guys need to keep the band alive while IX gets better. As anyone who has ever seen the band can attest, the stage of an EYEHATEGODshow isn’t exactly the ideal place to rest and recuperate from an illness, and that is the most important thing here: that Mike IX gets better. In order to both give him the time to take care of his health while simultaneously keeping EYEHATEGOD an active working unit, I’ll be proud to do my bit on this tour and take the stage with what is undeniably one of the heaviest bands on earth. It will be a savage experience; I can promise you that. Let the down-to-earth-motherfuckin’-post-amplification-blues begin! Hail Mike IX.”
EYEHATEGOD’s journey with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust will commence on October 6th and run through October 15th trampling ten cities in seven states, the tour concluding with a one-off show in Chicago with Negative Approach and Svlphvrvs. See all confirmed dates below.

_untitled__1EYEHATEGOD reemerged stronger and more determined than ever before with their self-titled LP, which dropped in 2014 via Housecore Records. Reaping critical acclaim globally, the record marks the band’s most successful release in their twenty-five-plus-year lineage. Having helped define the NOLA sound with their signature down-tuned, blues-inflected guitars awash in furious distortion, underpinning the tormented screams of Mike IX Williams over a thundering rhythm section,EyeHateGod personifies desperation and addiction in the various backwaters of forgotten America, punctuated by the “N’awlins” sound of rebellion and pollution resulting in triumph over adversity.

Orders for EyeHateGod in North America can be placed via Housecore Records HERE.

Jim James Announces Solo Album Out 11/4 + Tour

Jim James’ Second Solo Album
Eternally Even
out November 4th

Announces Headline US Tour

“One of rock’s most powerful singers and one of its most fearless architects” -Rolling Stone

Jim James, frontman of My Morning Jacket, announces the release of Eternally Even, out November 4 via ATO/Capitol Records.

Defying categorization, James’ second solo project, Eternally Even, co-produced by Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes) and Jim James, is a heart-thumping call to action. The timing of its release, smack in the middle of election season, is no accident.

“I wanted to make an album that hopefully speaks to the issues of the day, many of which, sadly, are issues we have been dealing with since the beginning of time.” says James. “Most of what I think about right now is how so many things in the world are SO fucked up- our political system is broken and corrupt…our earth is being destroyed by climate change…people are not treating each other with equality and respect… and I think- are we going to make it?  Are we going to figure it out and fix it before it’s too late? Can we ever truly open our hearts and embrace love in all its beautiful forms? I think it’s still possible. I still have hope in humanity. I’m just trying to be a part of the discussion and encourage people to speak out for equality, to not be afraid to speak out for peace and love. All of us feel afraid at times in these absolutely insane times, but its important we speak our minds, cast our votes, and do not give in to fear and hatred.”

In early 2013, his first solo full length Regions of Light and Sound of God was released and met with widespread critical acclaim. Praised as “truly breathtaking” by Time Out and “magnificent” by Rolling Stone, the album was followed with a sold-out national headlining tour and appearances on Late Night with Jimmy FallonJimmy Kimmel LiveLate Show with David Letterman and Austin City Limits.

Jim James will be embarking a solo tour this winter. Dates listed below—tickets go on sale this Friday, September 23. Jim James fan club members get first access to tickets tomorrowSeptember 20th. Get more information on the pre-sale and join the fan club here.

Green Day is an American punk rock band composed of vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool. Formed in 1986, Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band’s early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, its major label debut Dookie (released through Reprise Records) became a breakout success and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the United States. Green Day was widely credited with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.  Green Day’s follow up albums Insomniac (1995) and Nimrod (1997) each sold over two million albums and were certified Double Platinum, and Warning (2000) was certified Platinum.  2004 brought the band’s rock opera American Idiot which reignited the band’s popularity with a younger generation and sold over six million copies in the United States.  Green Day is one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway.  On April 18, 2015, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of the 2015 class in what was their first year of eligibility for induction. On October 16, 2015, Green Day released the documentary Heart Like A Hand Grenade, an unprecedented behind the scenes look at the writing and recording of their legendary album American Idiot.

From DEP Facebook:

The end is near party peoplllllllllllle. But not yet… not yet. So we had all of the fun getting up close and personal with some of you in the tiny saunas… I mean venues… that we played over the last couple of weeks. There was no better way we could’ve chosen to start the beginning of the end than by getting back in the van and getting down to the slimy nitty gritty with some of y’all in some of our favorite cities. Thanks to everyone who came out and screamed and sweat and bled with us and checked their fucks at the door. So invigorating to play such feral explosive small shows after being dormant for a while. Sad to know they will be our last shows in venues that small and intimate but very meaningful to say the least. Full body chills/goosebumps every night to see you all go into a frenzy and scream along to the end of Limerent Death so soon after we released it. So, because we’re kinda hooked on this whole intimate show thing now, we’re doing another in the UK this week at Old Blue Last. This place holds 150 people….tickets go on sale today at 3pm. “Say So confirms Bent Knee’s eloquence and ebullience, while also breaking new stylistic and temperamental ground.” The Boston Globe

“Mind boggling… the grandest and subtlest ideas are on the table.” NPR

“Intricately woven, surrealist stylings. A potent sense of urgency tingles the air.” Consequence of Sound

“A celebration of creative freedom and unrestricted musicianship. Easily one of the best albums of the year.” Rebel Noise

This has been an incredible year for Bent Knee across the board, with its third album Say So(Cuneiform Records) receiving a unanimously rave reception from national and global media, including The Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, NPR, and Consequence of Sound.

Fresh off a triumphant European tour, the exhilarating live act is proud to announce it’s opening for legendary expansive metal band The Dillinger Escape Plan during the first half of its forthcoming U.S. fall tour. Prior to those dates, Bent Knee will headline across the East Coast, including a date in Toronto, Canada.

You can experience Bent Knee in action right this second while waiting for the forthcoming gigs. Five songs from its thrilling, upcoming full-length concert film Live at the Space are now available on YouTube.

Since its inception, Bent Knee has remained true to the incredible spectrum of its diverse musical personalities. Courtney Swain’s riveting vocals lead the way through often dark lyrical themes, while guitar virtuoso Ben Levin shifts seamlessly from melodic riffs to extreme dissonance, often at a moment’s notice. Bassist Jessica Kion and drummer Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth contribute deep grooves, full of unexpected accents and ornamentation that glue the boundary-pushing work together. Violinist Chris Baum soars atop and through the material, further expanding the group’s sonic palette, and producer/sound designer Vince Welch combines it all with understated brilliance.

The Whigs to release Live In Little Five on Nov 11/ Live @Cattivo Oct 14

“…one of those all-encompassing, all-too-rare experiences where you actually feel the music, every perfectly synched-up moment between guitars and crashing cymbals, each echo of every shout and snarl. It’s rad. It’s hard.”–Esquire

Nashville-via-Athens, GA rock trio The Whigs have announced a new live album, Live In Little Five, that will releaseNovember 11 on New West Records. Yesterday, Paste featured the news and premiered a live video for fan-favorite “Like A Vibration,” which first appeared on the band’s critically acclaimed second full-length Mission Control in 2008. Watch the electric, energy-filled video here:

Live In Little Five can be preordered now exclusively through Pledge Music (

Recorded at Aisle 5 in Atlanta, GA last December, Live In Little Five “represent[s] the songs that are on set night in and night out,” according to frontman Parker Gispert. The album showcases eight tracks that span The Whigs’ 14-year career in what the band considers to be their purest form, as well as two previously unrecorded songs intended for their next full-length studio LP. In conjunction with the release, the band is currently on an extensive U.S. tour throughout the East Coast with shows in Chicago, Atlanta, Athens, Nashville, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and more. Full tour details below.

Though consistently lauded for their live performances through tours with killer bands of the same vein like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, MGMT, and Drive-By Truckers, Live In Little Five will be The Whigs’ first ever live album. It follows their fifth studio LP Modern Creation, which released in 2014 on New West and was marked by the band’s fourth appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman. The album received rave reviews with Spin praising it as “jangly, garage-pop glory,” and PopMatters calling the tracks “honest to goodness great rock tunes.”

Listen To ‘Capitol’ On Gorilla Vs. Bear!

TRUST is the musical project of Toronto artist Robert Alfons.

“Joyland” is an eruption of guts, eels, and joy.

Praise For Trust:

“On “Capitol“, Robert Alfons’ dark, ominously sulking synthpop explodes into a soaring chorus-of-the-year contender that’s cathartic and life-affirming and very hard not to spontaneously dance to every time” –Gorilla Vs. Bear

“”Rescue, Mister” features a slightly clarified sound compared to TRST’s grinding grit, with some impressive vocal acrobatics from Alfons.” – Pitchfork

““Rescue, Mister” is harder and clubbier and more concrete than anything on TRST, but it keeps some fundamental darkness intact.” -Stereogum

“‘Rescue, Mister’ proves that Alfons’s lost none of his synth craftmanship, sending disco-pop through a crazed, futuregasm vortex.” – This is Fake DIY

“Moody, skulking pop that reminisces downcast ’80s dance at its best.” – FADER

“Trust, is another one of those breaking Canadian acts that seems to have appeared fully-formed with a heap of brilliant, deviant, electronically infused tracks” — NOISEY

“’Rescue, Mister’ like the whole album, puts a gothy spin on house pop, courtesy Alfons’ rather sinister vocal style.”–Brooklyn Vegan

““While Trust is seemingly delivering the same kind of emotional experience, it’s a formula that’s been retooled with extra lethal results.” –Consequence Of Sound

“the sort of gloomy synthpop that’ll make you want to smoke cigarettes, rim your eyes with kohl and dance jerkily in the dark basement of a Berlin warehouse.” –NME [UK]

“mix of Depeche Mode-esque synth riffs mixed with Alfons’s murky baritone.” –The Guardian [UK]

Named after a city in the Al Anbar province of Iraq, FALLUJAH was forged in 2007 as a politically charged five-piece from the Bay Area. With two demos under their proverbial belts, the band began touring in 2009. By 2011, FALLUJAH would go on to release their debut full-length, The Harvest Wombs, via Unique Leader Records. Christened, “a great jazzy blackened technical death metal album… definitely required listening,” by HeavyBlogIsHeavy and, “a very solid progressive death metal release,” by SputnikMusic who further gushed, “this band is technical, melodic and brutal and all of that at the same time… This will be, without a doubt, another of the big bands coming from the San Francisco Bay Area if they keep this up,” the record reaped critical praises from fans and critics searching for something beyond genre conventions. After drastic stylistic progressions, countless tours and hundreds of shows, FALLUJAH has become an expansive, complex and style-defining force for musical, mental and creative liberation.

Check out the band’s three-song digital-only EP, Nomadic, released last Spring via Unique Leader at THIS LOCATION.

Further FALLUJAH happenings to be announced later this year. Stay tuned.

“…one of the bands that carries the torch of diversity, variety and uniqueness in the vast world of metal.” – Metal Wani

FALLUJAH are rising up to be masters of prog/tech metal. Being brutal enough to satisfy the toughest death metal fan, yet being beautifully careful enough to carry a newborn across eggshells and not break a single one. This band can do it all.” – Headbangorgtfo

The Rolling Stones, who rocked London and New York in 2012, announced today that they will kick off their “50 AND COUNTING” tour in Los Angeles at the STAPLES Center.  (Date TBA pending NBA/NHL playoff schedules.) The tour debut will be followed by performances in Oakland, San Jose, Las Vegas, Anaheim, Toronto, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia.

“50 AND COUNTING” continues the exhilarating celebration of the band’s first 50 years—five decades of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood bringing their iconic music and ground-breaking stage shows to audiences around the globe.

The Rolling Stones were recently crowned the ‘Best Live Band’ at the NME Awards in London, and over the past 12 months have thrilled fans with their release of a greatest hits collection, “GRRR!,” a groundbreaking documentary film “Crossfire Hurricane,” a photographic book “Rolling Stones: 50,” and have taken the stage by storm for their first live shows in many years. The tour is the band’s highly anticipated return to the stage.

“’50 AND COUNTING’ has been pretty amazing so far,” said Jagger. “We did a few shows in London and New York last year…and had such a good time that we thought…let’s do some more.  It’s a good show.  Lots of the classic stuff everyone wants to hear…with a few little gems tucked in here and there.  The stage is shaped like lips and goes off into the venue so I get to run around in the crowd.  It’s great fun to be able to get that close to the audience.”

“From day one at rehearsals it sounded so fresh.  You could tell that everybody was dying to get their teeth into it.  It was like…open the gates…let us out!” said Richards. “Cause man, it is the life and blood of us to play in front of people.”

Tickets for Oakland, San Jose, Toronto and Chicago go on sale beginning Monday, April 8 at 10AM local time and will be available at

Citi® cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning April 5 at 10AM local time through Citi’s Private Pass® Program. For complete presale details visit

“Our mission is to offer Citi cardmembers more access to the music and entertainment they love, and the Rolling Stones have been a soundtrack for the life experiences of so many,” said Jennifer Breithaupt, SVP of Entertainment Marketing at Citi. “We are thrilled to be providing exclusive presales and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for Citi cardmembers to see one of the most iconic bands in history perform live.”

Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Rolling Stones from 1969-74, will be a special guest throughout the tour.

The band will treat their generations of fans to an evening of classic Stones hits like “Gimme Shelter,” “Paint It Black,” “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Tumbling Dice,” and “It’s Only Rock and Roll,” curated with lesser known gems, and a cover or two.

The stage design for the tour is based on the band’s ubiquitous tongue and lips logo, which extends out into the crowd, allowing the Stones to interact directly with their audience.  Known for their ground-breaking sets and use of cutting-edge technology, the Stones’ set design will feature video screens and special effects that will enhance the high-octane experience of attending a live Stones’ show.

The band will also play London’s Hyde Park on Saturday, July 6 following a headlining appearance at UK’s Glastonbury Festival on June 29.

The Rolling Stones “50 AND COUNTING” tour will be the band’s first venture with worldwide tour promoter AEG Live’s Concerts West.

Dirty Ghosts Announce Fall Tour + Fun Fun Fun Fest

Dirty Ghosts’ front woman Allyson Baker has been a guitarist in both Toronto and San Francisco’s hardcore scene for years, and now she’s stepped up to the microphone with Dirty Ghosts whose “Katana Rock” video directed by Derrick Beckles (creator of TV CARNAGE, Adult Swim’s Totally For Teens and the upcoming series Hot Package) marks the second collaboration for these two.

The video for the song carries over elements of Dirty Ghosts’ hardcore background, combining an Argento influenced series of lit rooms. Images of layered psychedelia wash over projections of songstress Baker while she belts out the crafted, driving urgency of Katana Rock.

“Dirty Ghosts is a San Francisco-based trio that, interestingly enough, features programming from Aesop Rock. The riff-tastic “Battle Slang”‘s grimy groove features an insistent shaker, stuttering snares, and a gritty bass pulse.” – Pitchfork

“like punk riffed hard rockers (with a killer rhythm section)” – SF Bay Guardian

“an angular banger with 10-ton blues bars, a catchy punk hook and a whole lot of grit.” – AOL Spinner

“With plenty of edgy guitar riffs, subtle electro, and a voice that pulls you in, Metal Moon is definitely an album you will want to have dominating your playlists.” – Lithium

Allyson Baker doesn’t scare easily. Back in the ’90s, she was sneaking into
Dwarves shows and frequenting mosh pits before she was barely out of
junior high; by age of 17, she was playing guitar for some of
Toronto’s most notorious punk and hardcore bands (Teen Crud Combo
R.I.P.), before leaving her friends and family behind in 2000 to shake
some action in San Francisco. And yet, for all her apparent
fearlessness, Allyson is very much haunted by forces beyond her control. Dirty Ghosts may be her
new band, but it’s the five-years-in-the-making product of a
habit she just can’t quit, a sound and vision that—despite numerous obstacles along the way—just had to be unleashed.

True to their name, Dirty Ghosts rose from the ashes of San Francisco sludge-blues combo Parchman Farm in 2006; as an antidote to that band’s wall of squall, Baker and fellow Parchman Farm exile Carson Binks (another Toronto expat) launched Dirty Ghosts as a stripped-down duo, writing rhythmically driven new songs
built around intricate drum loops pieced together by Aesop Rock. And as if this relaxed, more experimental ethic wasn’t a radical
enough shift for these life-long punk-rockers, for the first time in
her musical career, Allyson was forced to add “vocalist” to her résumé.

“Everything that happened with this band was totally out of
necessity,” she relates. “Post-Parchman Farm, Carson and I had spent about a
year looking around for a singer. And then I felt like I was going to
lose Carson and the whole thing if I didn’t decide to just do it
myself. I had all the songs and vocals in my head, I just didn’t want
to do it—the idea of being a singer just wasn’t appealing to me at
all! But then I was just like, ‘Fuck it.'”

Initially, the gambit paid off—Dirty Ghosts’ earliest efforts fused
Allyson and Carson’s deep-seated love of ’60s funk and bluesy,
psychedelic rock with a more modernist, mechanized sheen, while Allyson’s newfound voice projected a striking balance of streetwise attitude and affecting vulnerability. Though
Allyson says she was “completely out of touch with what was going on
in music at the time,” Dirty Ghosts’ mix of grit and glitz aligned
favorably with that of au courant buzz bands like The Kills and Sleigh
Bells, while hearkening back to indie rock’s most dynamic duo, Royal Trux. In 2009, an early recording of the 21st-blaxploitation groover “Battle Slang” even
got the band some notice on Pitchfork and other national music sites.

However, the sudden departure of Binks in 2011 (to join Oakland-based stoner-metal behemoths Saviours) inspired Allyson to rethink, rebuild and re-record the songs and, with the help of a drummer, transform Dirty Ghosts’ bedroom beat-box experiments into stage-ready rockers. But in sharp contrast to the skull-crushing assault of
her previous groups, Dirty Ghosts are more about putting the disco into discord, using everything from dubby funk (“Shout It In”) to minimalist electro (“Steamboat to Concord”) to vintage Van Halen-esque contorto-riffs (“19 in ‘71”) as means to showcase the emotional intensity of Allyson’s voice.

Forgoing her usual diet of Black Flag and Blue Cheer, these days Allyson is more informed more by the likes of XTC, The Police and Chrome—bands that, she says, “had distinct
sounds mixed with other different genres that were new at that time. I play so much less guitar now—to me, this is not guitar music. I’m
thinking more about songs, and not volume and attack. That’s part of being
young, but then you get older and you’re like, ‘I want to write a song
that’s catchy and that people will enjoy.’

So after 11 years in San Francisco—and five spent bringing Dirty
Ghosts to life—Allyson now has everything she’s always envisioned: a shit-hot
record and a fully functioning band that’s already got a west coast
tour and South by Southwest appearances under its belt. But as much as
Dirty Ghosts is a testament to Allyson’s drive, more often than not, she feels like she’s the one being driven.

“Music takes complete
control over me, and then just when I think the feeling’s gone, it comes back.
It’s a total love/hate thing: I love it because making music makes me
feel so happy, but it kind of does the opposite, in that it takes over to the point where I can’t make any rational decisions about anything else in my
life. But I have this weird passion for music—there’s nothing else I really want to do.”

And, as this dead-cool debut ultimately proves, good things happen when you refuse to give up the ghost.

Toronto’s Slim Twig Returns With Psych Influenced LP

Out of the murky and demented inspiration of Slim Twig’s previous releases we can now hear the sound of a promising young songwriter. Although as idiosyncratic as ever, these new songs showcase an interest in classic songwriting, a fondness for psych-era Rolling Stones, an affinity with the queer power pop of R. Stevie Moore – in short, an odd friendliness (of sorts). Sof’ Sike is a diverse collection of songs, and with its restless approach to genre and uncontained enthusiasm for pop, can be viewed in the lineage of records like The Who’s Sell Out, or Spark’s A Woofer In Tweeters Clothing.

Slim Twig has torn through enough ideas and styles to finance a fistful of bands since releasing his first EPs in 2008. These earlier explorations include the prescient flirtation with an avant-rockabilly sensibility on Vernacular Violence (2008), and his full-length debut, Contempt!, a re-appropriation of off-kilter sampling techniques gleaned from the RZA and Madlib, and presented in a decidedly un-Hip Hop-like format. The latter record stands out as one of the most strangely singular records released on a major Canadian indie label, and as an unsung pre-cursor to the solo, sample-based, oddball pop that by 2012, has become commonplace.

2012 also sees the release of a wealth of new Slim Twig material. Appropriately for an artist as diversely prolific as Slim, the coming months will see two full-length album releases, as well as a 12”-split on Clan Destine Records with blog-favourite pals, Dirty Beaches, Ela Orleans, and U.S. Girls. Slim Twig’s work for U.S. Girls debuted with the a split 7″ and fully blossomed with their collaboration on 2011’s critically acclaimed, U.S. Girls on Kraak. 2012 further establishes Slim’s role as producer as FatCat prepares the release of U.S. Girls latest record, an unabashed foray into pop & glam produced and mixed by Slim Twig.
