THE OCEAN Prepares For Co-Headlining Tour With Scale The Summit/Altar Bar PGH 3/26

In just over a month, THE OCEAN will be returning to North America for the first time since last year’s Summer Slaughter takeover. Sponsored by MetalSucks, the journey will commence on March 5th in Seattle, include two performances in Austin, Texas at SXSW and finds the band co-headlining with Prosthetic Recording artists Scale the Summit. Additional support will be provided by special guests The Atlas Moth and Silver Snakes.
The tour welcomes new THE OCEAN recruits, drummer Paul Seidel and guitarist Damian Murdoch, who replace Luc Hess and Jona Nido, both of whom departed the band on mutual terms late last year. Two live videos have been made available from The Summer Slaughter Tour stop at the Rave in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Fans can watch “Demersal: Cognitive Dissonance” (featuring guest vocals from CJ of Thy Art is Murder) HERE .

Comments THE OCEAN founding guitarist Robin Staps: “Summer Slaughter was the final US tour for Luc and Jona. These clips bring back good memories of our last Summer together and a lot of crazy parties in parking lots across the country. Now I’m really looking forward to getting back to the US with our new guys. We’ve started rehearsing for our upcoming tours this week, and there’s a really good vibe in the room. We’re hungry to get out again, we’ve only been home for two months now but it already feels too long.”

THE OCEAN: Excerpt From The Pelagial DVD Now Playing At Revolver

Revolver Magazine is pleased to reveal an excerpt from THE OCEAN‘s Pelagial DVD. The dramatic DVD, which is being screened as live video projections during the band’s current Pelagialworld tour, is a conceptual movie by Craig Murray, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Converge, and others. This movie, which offers up a year’s worth of meticulous shooting, cutting and editing, visualizes the journey into the depths and completes the holistic music and visual art project that defines the Pelagial concept. The film is inundated with spectacular oceanic footage, parts of which THE OCEAN‘s own Robin Staps, an avid scuba diver, filmed himself in Australia. In addition, Pelagialfeatures a female protagonist (who ironically goes by the name of “Arielle” in real life). The girl is seen enduring various stages of fear, lust, terror, pain and joy, as she sinks towards the inscrutable depths of the Hadopelagic zone at the end of the album, and metaphorically, deeper and deeper into the depths of her own psyche.

Comments Robin Staps: “The album concept follows two separate but related strains: One is the obvious journey from the surface towards the depths of the sea, crossing the five Pelagial depth zones. The second one is loosely based on Andrey Tarkowsky’s movie Stalker, which is also a journey through zones, but an inward journey, form the surface into the depths of the human psyche, towards the origins of our wishes and desires. This is the central theme that the lyrics of the album are orbiting around. The Pelagial movie takes up themes from and makes reference to both of these conceptual strains, and fuzes them together, in an abstract, artistic way.”

The Pelagial DVD comes with a 5:1 Dolby surround mix of the instrumental album and is currently only available along with the special limited edition acrylic box set versions of the album, which were released through the band’s own Pelagic Records, on both CD and 4×10″ vinyl formats, in April. These special acrylic boxes contained the CD digipak or the two vinyl gatefolds respectively; which were “buried” underneath five thick, silk-screen printed acrylic layers colored in different hues of transparent blue, again reflecting the individual pelagic depth zones. The vinyl box sets sold out within nine days in February 2013, by direct preorder only. A second edition, including a repress of the vinyl on three-color split wax, will be made available for preorder shortly, and released in December through Pelagic Records. The CD box sets are still available through http://www.pelagic-records.com/cds

Check out the stunning excerpt from the DVD in the form of “Bathyalpelagic III: Disequillibrated,” now playing courtesy of Revolver at THIS LOCATION.

THE OCEAN‘s wildly successful Pelagial full-length was released earlier this year via Metal Blade. Their most profound work to date, Pelagial is a 53-minute exploratory composition written, recorded, mixed and intended to-be-performed-live as one single piece of music. Centered around all five pelagic depth zones, Pelagial purposefully submerges its listeners into an aquatic journey that is at once tranquil and terrifying. Crowned “ambitious and textured” by Terrorizer and “brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of,” by CravePelagialentered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #10 upon its first week of release and continues to reap critical accolades from fans and critics globally. The OCEAN is currently in the last stages of a three-month world tour promoting Pelagial, which included North America, Taiwan, China, and currently Russia.

Stay tuned for further THE OCEAN missives in the weeks to follow.

THE OCEAN Unveils New Video; European Headlining Tour Announced

THE OCEAN has launched a brand new video for “Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams” from their most recent album, Pelagial. The band’s first official music video, not counting previous videos composed of live footage, was directed by Alexander Kraudelt and Lukas Hambach and produced by Frameshock, with additional visuals by Craig Murray.
Founding guitarist Robin Staps comments: “This clip is blending performance footage with excerpts from Craig Murray’s Pelagial movie, which was released along with the limited edition CD and vinyl boxset versions of the album. We’ve never really done a clip like that before, but it was great fun making this.”

“Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams” is streaming now onmetalblade.com/theocean.

Pelagial, the latest album from THE OCEAN, has been received with open arms and ears across the globe. MetalSucks declared that THE OCEAN have “never written more intriguing music” in their 5/5 review. Spin recognized the band’s diversity with “Mastodon‐shaped footprints, lush strings… [before] the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos,” Decibel noted a band who have, “become more luxurious, experimental and textural,” Terrorizer heard an album, “ambitious and adventurous,” whilst Kerrang were bowled over by “melodrama, intimacy, grandeur, grace and big fucking riffs.” RockARolla, bastions of taste at the experimental end of heavy music, emphasized how revered THE OCEAN currently are: “With Isis gone, no one has yet taken their place as intelligent and sensitive masters of post‐metal but, with this, there’s no doubt that THE OCEAN are shoe‐ins for the title.”

The latter’s emphasis is fitting considering THE OCEAN recently toured a number of sell-out shows with another master of post‐metal, Cult of Luna. The Mastodon reference is relevant after they invited THE OCEAN out for their Summer tour dates, and the diversity on display is never more apparent when you consider tours in the past few years with Dillinger Escape Plan, Opeth and Anathema.
Diverse elements are honed and perfected on Pelagial, and this ethos is at the heart of the touring package for THE OCEAN‘s headlining European tour. Set to commence on October 29, 2013, support will come by way of Norway’s Shining, Poland’s Tides From Nebula and France’s Hacride.

THE OCEAN are currently making their way through North America as part of the seventh annual Summer Slaughter Tour. Presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, the progressive sound contortionists are currently leveling stages nightly alongside the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more. Following their Stateside takeover, THE OCEAN will play select shows throughout Taiwan, China and Russia. See all confirmed dates below.

THE OCEAN Prepares For Summer Slaughter

Progressive sound contortionists THE OCEAN will return to North America as part of the seventh annual Summer Slaughter Tour later this month. Presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, the band level stages nightly alongside the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more. Following their Stateside takeover, THE OCEAN will play select shows throughout Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Russia with an additional European sprint in the Fall to be announced in the coming weeks.

Comments guitarist Robin Staps,“We’re stoked to get out on the road again! When I started this band 12 years ago, I would have never expected that it would eventually become possible for us one day, to play shows in Sichuan, China, or near the Baikal Lake in Siberia. These will be our first shows ever in Mexico and Taiwan, too. Good times ahead, see you people out there on one of these continents tasting your local beer and food!”

In the meantime, check out a clip of vocalist Loïc Rossetti performing with Dillinger in 2010HERE.

THE OCEAN will be touring in support of Pelagial, their critically lauded, maritime-themed studio offering, which entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #10 upon its first week of release!

Their most profound work to date, Pelagial is a 53-minute exploratory composition written, recorded, mixed and intended to-be-performed-live as one single piece of music. Centered around all five pelagic depth zones — epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic – Pelagial purposefully submerges its listeners into an aquatic journey that is at once tranquil and terrifying. Pelagial begins rather light and becomes progressively heavier and slower as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level. Said Decibel Magazine, “Where the band was once steeped in sludgy noise/metalcore with orchestral interludes, they’ve become more luxurious, experimental and textural. Pelagial…further continues that shift, working on multi-tiered levels and drawing from DEP-inspired chaos, Opeth-like moods and Between The Buried And Me genre fiddling. It’s an album that strives to be all things at once without crossing into a ‘look-at-me’ mess.”

Order your copy of Pelagial at: http://www.theoceancollective.com/pelagial. Additionally, you can nab special THE OCEAN Pelagial World Tour 2013 T-shirts and posters via Pelagic Records at the following locations http://www.pelagic-records.com/tshirts andhttp://www.pelagic-records.com/poster.

***THE OCEAN headlining shows

“The sixth album from German post-metal doombringers THE OCEAN is huge… In the course of the record, tender piano interludes get stomped on by Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings work next to bulldozing double-kick work, and, at the end, the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos.” – Spin

“…a hallmark album for a gifted team of artisans…Pelagial is one of the most invested albums THE OCEAN has yet conceived. Prepare to be not only submerged but actually touched by this album.” — Blabbermouth

“Pelagial is brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of.” – Crave Online

“Pelagial resonates so deeply because its sonic continuity is matched with shifting, unified composition. The album viscerally depicts the spectrum of submersion while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and cohesion. The band has never written more intriguing music, and THE OCEAN COLLECTIVEhas never been a more apt name.” – MetalSucks

“…a journey within itself…” — Metal Insider

“…destined to be one of the year’s best releases.” – Echoes And Dust

“Creating music with a real meaning cannot be taken as a hobby. Either you put everything into it and make your message known or you don’t. Their correlation between diving deeper into the ocean and diving into the inner workings of the human mind is astounding…you would be a complete fool to not pick up this true work of art.” – New Noise Magazine

We’re launching a US tour in the spring, hitting Europe for some festivals and club shows, and then hitting several more cities with Summer Slaughter all summer long. We are absolutely amped. After being holed up in the studio for such a long time giving birth to One of Us is the Killer, we are all pent up and ready to share material new and old with our supporters doing what we love to do the most. Can’t wait to see and either kiss or rip off each and every one of your faces on the road with Summer Slaughter and year round, everywhere.”

Shawn Keith, tour coproducer: “I’m looking forward to extinguishing fires and putting clubs back together each night following DEP’s set. Let the Slaughter begin!”

INTRONAUT to Release New Album in March 2013

Post-metal prog act INRONAUT will release their highly-anticipated new album, HABITUAL LEVITATIONS (INSTILLING WORDS WITH TONES) in North America on March 19, 2012 via Century Media Records.

Drums were recorded by producer John Haddad [Exhumed, Phobia] and Derek Donley [Bereft] handled recording for all other elements on the record. It was mixed by Josh Newell and artwork and layout will be done by David D’Andrea who has worked with the band on previous albums.

INTRONAUT recently posted a rehearsal video, where they are practicing a new song that will be featured on HABITUAL LEVITATIONS (INSTILLING WORDS WITH TONES):

INTRONAUT’s last studio album, Valley Of Smoke, was met with vast critical acclaim and the band toured extensively in support of the album. In addition to landing a slot as direct support for TOOL, INTRONAUT toured with Animals As Leads, Cynic, The Ocean, Helmet and more.

The band is confirmed for this year’s Roadburn Festival held in the Netherlands and will be doing a full European tour around the event with The Atlas Moth and Castle. A full North American tour will be announced soon.

INTRONAUT Enters Studio to Begin Working on New Album

INTRONAUT, the notorious post-metal prog act hailing from Los Angeles, has entered the studio to begin working on their fourth full length album. Drums will be recorded by producer John Haddad [Exhumed, Phobia] at Trench Studios, while Derek Donley [Bereft] will be handling recording duties for all other elements. Andrew Schneider [Unsane, Cave In] will be mixing the album and David D’Andrea will be working with the band again on artwork and layout.

Vocalist and guitarist Sacha Dunable comments: “After a year of intense, full-time writing mode, we are elated to begin recording our fourth full length this week. It’s a little early to have perspective on how it compares to our past records, but it should be a banger. Expect a wildly technical, emotionally charged, organic sounding record.”
