THE HAUNTED comments:

“After having found our feet as a band onstage at last week’s 70,000 Tons Of Metal festival, it is now time to bring the mayhem home to Scandinavia. First show of the tour will hit Gothenburg (I mean, where else, right?) followed up by a string of shows in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The reception of the three new songs from our newly released EP ‘Eye Of The Storm’ at 70K was amazing, so expect them to be played, together with a truckload of other hard-hitters. We can’t wait to get back out there playing shows again, and we’ll make sure it has been worth your while sticking around for us through thick and thin. See you all somewhere along the road!”

THE HAUNTED’s Jensen comments: There aren’t superlatives enough to describe how much the band has longed for these three songs to be released. We are sure fans have been anxious to know what the band sounds like today after all the turmoil and old members leaving and new members joining. We feel that these three songs represent the band perfectly. We are currently working on the new album, an album that will be filled to the brim with what we know to be ‘THE HAUNTED’. We’ll start doing gigs this spring and we’ll do festivals all over the place this summer. Get in touch with the festivals you visit (and behave like an animal at) and tell them to get us on the bill! VALLENFYRE to begin recording new album

In 2011, Gregor Mackintosh (PARADISE LOST) announced that he would go back to his death metal roots with his new band, VALLENFYRE. The level of expectation was set high with a line-up consisting of Hamish Glencross (guitar; MY DYING BRIDE), Scoot (bass; DOOM, EXTINCTION OF MANKIND), Adrian Erlandsson (drums; AT THE GATES, PARADISE LOST, THE HAUNTED) local friend Mully (second guitar) – and of course, Gregor on vocals (for the first time in his career!). Their debut, A Fragile King, was a reference to Gregor’s father’s (lost) battle with cancer; the harrowing, crusty death-doom found on the album was hailed as “a beast of a record” (Terrorizer UK) and “a sonic force that bites deep and hard” (Decibel). Simply put, A Fragile King is “old school to the bone” (Rock Hard Germany).

Two years and some exclusive live shows later, VALLENFYRE is pleased to announce that they will begin recording the follow-up to A Fragile King in January 2014 at GodCity Studio in Salem, MA. Produced by Kurt Ballou (CONVERGE, BLACK BREATH, NAILS), this currently untitled opus will see the crusty death-doom merchants take their sound to new extremes.

Gregor Mackintosh comments: “We were very pleased with our debut album as a dirty mix of all our earliest death, doom and crust influences. On the follow-up, we want to take this much further and develop our own niche. It will be a stench-ridden, grim, face-melter that will separate the men from the boys.”

VALLENFYRE’s second album is scheduled for a worldwide release in April 2014 via Century Media Records. In case you missed A Fragile King, be sure to check out the music video for “Cathedrals Of Dread”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibetDfGWOFo

Stay tuned for more news coming soon!

THE HAUNTED returns with revamped line-up; launches introductory video clip

Sweden’s metal pioneers THE HAUNTED are finally back in the spotlight after almost a year without public activity, following a major line-up change around autumn 2012. But the time has finally come to break the silence and announce the return of THE HAUNTED to form…

THE HAUNTED line-up 2013:

(From left to right in above picture)

Jensen – Guitars

Ola Englund – Guitars

Marco Aro – Vocals

Jonas Björler – Bass

Adrian Erlandsson – Drums

Watch the following video for a proper introduction to the new THE HAUNTED line-up with interviews and fresh rehearsal room footage:

http://youtu.be/yA1buY8jTSo

THE HAUNTED’s founding member and guitarist Jensen checked in to comment about the recent developments:

“THE HAUNTED went through some difficult times last year. Losing three band members is a pretty huge blow to any band. Jonas and I agreed immediately that we wanted to continue with the band, but we wanted to take our time and not rush into anything. Meanwhile, news from THE HAUNTED’s camp has been pretty scarce. This changes starting today. We are very happy to be able to present you a full band line-up. Some of you might recognize a few faces, some of you might not. Adrian Erlandsson is back on drums and Marco Aro is back on vocals. Adrian you might know from playing on our first album and Marco sang on ‘The Haunted Made Me Do It’, ‘Live Rounds In Tokyo’ and ‘One Kill Wonder’. On guitar we also have Ola Englund bringing some pretty heavy chops to the band.

We’re all VERY excited about having THE HAUNTED back in working shape again and we can’t wait to get back out on the road to play for our very patient and faithful fans again. A new album is also already in the works and if you are familiar with the individual band members of this new line-up, you can be assured that the new material will grab you by the throat from the get-go!

A huge ‘thanks’ goes out to all the people that responded to our call for new members applications. You put a lot of time and effort into your auditions and we are very grateful to have had such talented and cool people wanting to join the band! We truly appreciated your support!”

Vocalist Marco Aro (ex FACE DOWN, also in THE RESISTANCE) was previously involved with THE HAUNTED for three acclaimed releases between 1999 and 2003, as well as for several worldwide touring campaigns.

Drummer Adrian Erlandsson (also in AT THE GATES and PARADISE LOST) was in the original line-up of THE HAUNTED together with the Björler twins, after the demise of their previous legendary group, AT THE GATES. Together with Jensen, they launched THE HAUNTED’s self-titled debut in 1998– an album which is widely considered to be the beginning of a new era in the thrash metal movement and which, despite its initial underground status, climbed to be a massively inspirational record for a whole new generation of musicians and bands in the following decade.

Guitarist Ola Englund is a very talented young player from Sweden that has recently been a touring and recording member of SIX FEET UNDER.

Together with guitarist Jensen and bassist Jonas Björler, THE HAUNTED’s announcement of this new formation promises to be only the beginning of greater things to come. Expect more news about THE HAUNTED’s next album and their upcoming touring plans soon.

Black Dahlia Murder: A Pittsburgh Pictorial

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Black Dahlia Murder derived their name from the 1947 unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, and in Pittsburgh the absolutely killed. With influences ranging from Carcass, At the Gates, Darkane, Dissection, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel, The Haunted, In Flames, Dimension Zero, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera and Megadeth- the band has an interesting mix of very hardcore genres.

Mainly sticking to the genres of melodic death metal, metalcore, and deathcore, when asked to describe what kind of music the band plays, Strnad commented: “I’ve always said that we’re melodic death metal. We are mostly influenced by Swedish bands and Carcass. The heavy end of our sound is the American style creeping in, with some Floridian influences like Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation and that kind of stuff. We’ve been labeled more often because of our look than our sound, which is dumb, and speaks volumes about what kind of geniuses are out there!”. In an interview with Uranium Magazine, Strnad also stated, “Some bands that get labeled as metalcore are actually good, like Between the Buried and Me or The Red Chord. Metal is what I grew up with, and then I learned about punk and hardcore. But a lot of our ethics, the way we carry ourselves, is more punk…I like that hardcore has a sense of community without the competition you see in metal.”

The only disappointment for many of the Pittsburgh fans was the “early” start of BDM. Most shows at Stage AE start about an hour after doors open, but BDM went on pretty early (6:30) causing many to miss part or all of their set.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is the only Black Sabbath biography written for middle and high school students. Thoroughly researched, annotated and highly informative, this book is an appealing read for all ages and a great way for parents to introduce their kids to some of the music they love and grew up with. This book chronicles one of rock’s most legendary band’s careers from its formation to the present day and does a superb job of conveying the group’s ups and downs, not glossing over any details while staying age-appropriate. Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is available in high-quality library bound hardcover as well as softcover editions and can be found wherever books are sold online.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal has already been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives and sits on the shelves of libraries throughout the United States to New Zealand, Singapore and the United States Army Base in Heidelberg, Germany.

BRIAN ABERBACK is a veteran music journalist specializing in hard rock and heavy metal. Aberback’s encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal and hard rock spans numerous genres. His interview list is a who’s who of heavy metal and hard rock legends, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament and Mercyful Fate. His work has appeared in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and on news and music websites. Many of his stories have been published in The Record, the largest daily newspaper in Northern New Jersey.

What sets Aberback apart, in addition to his strong writing style and dedication to his craft, has been his passion for giving heavy metal bands a shot at attracting new audiences through mainstream newspaper exposure. Over the years he’s introduced such bands as Nile, Cradle of Filth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and many, many more, through the pages of The Record and other publications, to music fans, and even metal fans, who likely would have never heard of these bands. Not often do you find daily newspaper writers publishing stories about the likes of D.R.I., Diamond Head, Everytime I Die, Iced Earth or The Gathering.

***An articulate and well-informed speaker with a vast knowledge of the history of rock-and-roll, musically and socially, with a specific emphasis on heavy metal and hard rock, BRIAN ABERBACK is available for book talks, panel discussions and as an expert commentator for television and radio programs.

Check out some great reviews on Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal:

“Refreshingly levelheaded and loaded with sourced quotes, it’s that rare middle-grade biography (or “rockography,” as the title page insists) that is able to trace a band’s history, revel in its rock awesomeness, and be blunt about such things as drug abuse, all the while keeping things at an age-appropriate keel.”
–Booklist

“Through this book, old and new fans alike learn about the band’s history and impact on the music industry.”
–Children’s Literature
