A Tribute to Ray Manzarek 1939-2013

Chris Walter/WireImage
Chris Walter/WireImage

You would be hard pressed to find anyone willing to argue that there would have been a Doors without keyboardist and true band leader Ray Manzarek.  The true keeper of the Morrison flame since his death and the genius behind that certain sound The Doors unmistakably always had, Ray was the statesman from the very inception of the group.  More than any the other surviving Doors, Manzarek was the cheerleader and historian who attempted to keep fiction from fact, even though he sometimes allowed his love for Jim to cloud what may have really happened, only endearing us to him more.  His skills are to this day some of the best in the business and he will always be missed greatly by all.  Thanks for everything Ray.  Say, “Hello, I love you” to Jim and we will keep the flame going down here.

The Doors’ founding keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, died in Germany Monday after a long fight with cancer, his publicist said in a statement. He was 74. The artist had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer.

Drummer for The Doors John Densmore wrote: “There was no keyboard player on the planet more appropriate to support Jim Morrison’s words. Ray, I felt totally in sync with you musically. It was like we were of one mind, holding down the foundation for Robby and Jim to float on top of. I will miss my musical brother.”

Guitaris for The Doors Robby Krieger posted the following statement: “Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison were the two most unusual people I have ever known. It didn’t take long to realize this about Jim. He was obviously a genius, and he worked hard at being different. Did a good job of it too. Ray on the other hand, was a late bloomer. I guess it took all of his [and our ] energies to keep Jim in line. The real Ray didn’t appear until after Jim was gone. He was constantly doing projects with different people, producing, playing with different poets. He always saw the good side of people, and that was his genius. He was the only guy at UCLA that saw something good about Jim. Everyone else thought of Jim as a phony or worse. He saw the genius of Jim’s words and the rest is history. Ray sure did influence my life, and I hope yours to. I’ll always be grateful to John for introducing me to Ray and Jim, and I’ll never forget them.”

Tracking the guitars was such a blast, as I plugged in my white-and-black Charvel, my trusty ol’ MXR Phase 90 and went right into my cranked-up Marshall JCM800, entering that EVH zone and giving my all to pay tribute to one of the greatest rock guitarists ever! We had a great time with Mike Portnoy’s idea to insert a medley of kick-ass VH parts in the mid-section while going into a great treat before we head back to the final chorus!”

Coverta is an eight-track EP featuring cover versions of some of the band’s favorite songs. Long-time fans of Mike Portnoy are aware of the multiple cover CDs he has released with Dream Theater and with Neal Morse. Coverta is the first CD of covers recorded by ADRENALINE MOB.

ADRENALINE MOB: OMERTA/ In Pittsburgh 3/14

NEW ALBUM: OMERTA OUT NOW/In Pittsburgh @Altar Bar3/14

ADRENALINE MOB features Russell Allen (Symphony X), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), and Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp)

ADRENALINE MOB will be releasing an eight-track EP on March 12, 2013 entitledCOVERTA, featuring cover versions of some of the band’s favorite songs, including songs by Dio, The Doors, Black Sabbath and many more.  Given band members’ respective pedigrees selling millions of albums and perform for sold out crowds globally, fans everywhere will soon be taking the vow of OMERTAin their honor.

On their full length album OMERTA, the group cranks out one bruising hard rock anthem after another.  Songs like the first single “Undaunted” and “Hit the Wall” hijack the right level of instrumental intricacy and taut technicality while grooving and moving fluidly,”This is a new band with a new sound and a new beginning,” declares Portnoy.  “Forget what everyone has done in the past.  I’ll cherish and look back on my 25 years in Dream Theater with great pride, but it’s time to begin this next chapter.  It’s similar to how Foo Fighters gave Dave Grohl a fresh start.  That’s how I look at it.”

Hitting on the heels of OMERTA, and shining a light on the band’s influences, comes COVERTA – a new eight song EP of cover songs.  COVERTA highlights the many different sides of the band.  Tracks like Led Zeppelin’s “The Lemon Song” and The Doors “Break on Through” are real credits to the group’s musical history.  Paying, “…tribute to so many great bands and putting out our own spin on it shows a lot of diversity within Adrenaline Mob,” says Orlando.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine will be covering their show at Altar Bar on 3/14…we highly suggest you break Omerta, tell all your friends, and be there…

Bad Cop Reissue ‘I Can’t Slow Down’ EP

This band is called Bad Cop, from Nashville, Tennessee, and at the center of it are the things that make all great rock bands the way they are: tight musicianship, remarkable songwriting, and above all, the ability to pull together a performance that makes you believe whatever frontman Adam Moult tells you. The songs on Bad Cop’s forthcoming EP play as instantly memorable, catchy pop melodies – because, after all, they are, whether creaking across the wooden barroom floor or barreling full-speed towards the reckless abandon of hardcore punk. But moreover, there is a spirit, wild-eyed and desperate, pulling you in no matter what their approach may be.

First drawing inspiration from iconic groups like The Doors, The MC5, Joy Division, and Nirvana, Moult set out onto the punk scene in Nashville in 2002, playing with bands at Guido’s Pizza when he was just 12 years old. Three years afterwards, he was sent away against his will to Hidden Lake Institution, an “alternative to prison” boarding school in the Georgia mountains, a facility that’s since been sued out of existence due to allegations of abuse. Through two years of such dark, nightmarish conditions, this young man kept his time growing up around music as the means to keep him going in there, writing his first songs while incarcerated, and starting a new band the moment he was able to return home.

That band was Bad Cop, and following a string of demos and the full-length Harvest The Beast, released on NYC’s ROIR Records in 2010, Moult found himself dismantling the lineup that had been circling around the band since its earliest days. Longtime collaborator Alex Harkness returned, and the two began to expand their approach beyond the shadowy regions of their earliest work, with a renewed interest in garage and glam rock. “We’re kind of the dark horse band in Nashville,” claims Moult, diverging from other sects of the local scene to build their own following on their own terms.

And the path they’ve ended up taking has opened up Bad Cop to new possibilities and solid friends, like Cage the Elephant, who handpicked Bad Cop to support them on their 2012 tour, and whose guitarist Brad Schultz wound up liking the band enough to produce their latest EP, which is due for release in late 2012. Tracks like “Light On” linger with a hangdog leer that only intensifies its allure as it rolls onward, while burners like “Kick It Out” know better than to try to subvert their high-octane punk roots and fuckin’ floor it. Moult attributes the change in direction from earlier efforts to the cumulative effects of being a music obsessive. “You hear music that’s new to you, you start to make connections. It’s showed me that we can write songs that help return rock ‘n’ roll to what it used to be.”

Following the release of a split 7” with fellow Nashville band Turbo Fruits, Bad Cop will be finishing up work on their new EP, currently being recorded at Battletapes in Nashville. They plan to tour on these releases in the last months of 2012, around the time the Mayans predict the world will end. But Adam and Bad Cop would rather you not think of it that way. “We play so that the people in the crowd will have the chance to step out of their lives for 30-45 minutes and help them to feel free.”
