New Van Halen in the Works says David Lee Roth

As reported by  Damian Fanelli on GuitarWorld.com:

“During his recent chat with Jim Florentine of That Metal Show, David Lee Roth confirmed that Van Halen are indeed working on their next studio album.

That’s the good news. The bad news, if any, is that the album is more than a year away from being completed and released. Roth says the process will take about 18 months.

“I was up at Edward’s house, maybe three days ago — just before I came here to the city — and we’re starting to put music together,” Roth told Florentine on Ozzy’s Boneyard. “Not to give away exactly what the package will be, it’s gonna be about 18 months, I think.”

Roth continued:

“We start way, way, way in advance, ’cause we are eminently art-centric, which is a really fancy way of saying we really do generate all the artwork, the graphics, etc. We don’t hire out and have somebody design a bunch of album covers for us and then choose. We start from scratch ourselves. Same thing with the merchandise. If you buy a T-shirt, that was designed, literally, in my living room.

“So if you really want to generate the ideas from scratch and bring them all the way to the finish, you’re gonna have to learn a few other languages, and you’re gonna have to speak those over a lot of extra phone calls. And that’s usually the break point for most artists.”

“We’re writing. I write lyrics routinely. It’s a perishable skill. And the band plays together routinely, at least three times a week. They’re up at Ed’s place, routinely.”

You can hear the entire 28-minute interview below.

New Jersey birthed heavy metal in the United States in the early 1980’s. The state of New Jersey was an integral part of launching the careers of these bands, as well as everyone from Bruce Springsteen to The Misfits to Bon Jovi and more.

This is an event to benefit the victims of Superstorm Sandy, which wreaked havoc on the Jersey Shore and on the lives of its residents. Superstorm Sandy has left dozens dead and thousands homeless – making it the worst storm in the region’s history. This is a 100% non-profit event.

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS: New Quote Snippets from Kerry King and Philip Anselmo

The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists, compiled by Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is the ultimate look at the world of heavy metal via the ease and convenience of a list. No stone is left unturned here, and I mean no stone. If you think you have a list about metal that isn’t in this book, chances are you’re wrong. Both Jenkins and Abrams have exhaustively researched and brainstormed Merciless and delivered a look at their beloved genre that is informative and fun.”– Iann Robinson, CraveOnline.com

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS, written by NYC music scene veterans Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is set to be released on April 9, 2013. Touted as being “the most opinionated compendium ever written concerning Heavy Metal”, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is comprised of 208 jam-packed pages representing all that is glorious across the world of Heavy Metal. The book features dozens of never-before-seen photographs from iconic East Coast photographer Frank White.

The foreword for THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS comes from one of the most respected names in the genre, Slayer guitarist extraordinaire Kerry King, with a candid and passionate afterword from Pantera/Down frontman Philip Anselmo.

“This book will appeal to metalheads because it’s what they love. They’ll get to laugh at the industry and at themselves. Any information is good information, and metal kids want it.” –Kerry King (Slayer)

“I am an unabashed heavy metal fan, and I know as well as anyone, that metal fans can be an extremely loyal lot. But we are a very critical lot too. With each new movement, a new, defiant, outspoken, and sovereign audience is born. Music is older than all of us, so its history is ours to writhe in and absorb.” – Philip Anselmo (Pantera/Down)

There are numerous other contributions from key metal luminaries and industry personnel like:

Scott Ian (Anthrax)

Gary Holt (Exodus)

Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly)

Katon W. DePena (Hirax)

John Gallagher (Raven)

Danny Lilker (Nuclear Assault/SOD)

Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show)

Jon & Marsha Zazula (Megaforce Records)

Brian Slagel (Metal Blade Records)

Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica Producer)

ILL BILL (Heavy Metal Kings/La Coka Nostra)

MC Serch (3rd Bass)

Richard Christy (Charred Walls of the Damned/The Howard Stern Show)

Monte Conner (Roadrunner Records/Nuclear Blast Records)

Borivoj Krgin (Blabbermouth.net)

Shaun Glass (Soil/Dirge Within)

Betsy Weiss (Bitch)

Presented in the form of dozens of factual, random and often outrageous lists, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS dares to call many out for being the worst instead of being the best. It points out the triumphs, as well as the miserable failures concerning metal, from a diehard fan’s point-of-view.

TMBML leaves no stone unturned, often blurring the lines separating fact and hilarity. You want to know about album covers that feature goats on them? What Motorhead icon Lemmy’s warts might tell you if they could speak? The achievements Iron Maiden would never have reached had their original vocalist Paul Dianno remained in the band? Well then, this book is for you.

To pre-order THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS, please visit Amazon.com. You can learn more about the book at the official Facebook page or Abrams Books.

The Girls of Metal Part 1: An Interview with That Metal Show’s Jennifer Gottlieb

In the first of a series highlighting women who are famous in various genres of entertainment and unabashed about their “metal” status, Pittsburgh Music Magazine reached out to Thee Metal Girl for many of us. You probably best know her as “Miss Box of Junk” from That Metal Show, but Jennifer Leah Gottlieb is poised to make herself more of a household name. Jennifer has talents way beyond looking gorgeous and bringing out the prize box during Stump the Trunk. Read on to learn a little more about the girl we wish would spend more time in our living rooms…(on our TV’s!!!).

Do you ever have opportunities to hang out with any of the musicians pre or post show?

Yes,I do! I have had the chance to meet some of the greatest musicians of all time. I have the coolest job ever.

dtp_jenniferleahgottlieb_1241-2_fb

Since That Metal Show only films a few weeks per year, what are you
up to at the moment and what do you have in the works?

I am a personal trainer full time right now. I spend my days kicking
my client’s booties into shape. I have a few acting gigs in the works, but can’t talk about them yet. Will share soon! 😉

dtp_JLG_Fitness_fb15

What was it like playing Linda in the Broadway touring version of
“That Wedding Singer”?

Linda was my dream role, so it was totally
surreal. Being on the road was challenging, but I would say it was
the greatest experience I have ever had.
I learned more about myself in that year than I ever have. I also
created life long friendships.

dtp_jenniferleahgottlieb_0487_fb

Since you are a personal trainer-‐what are your
favorite techniques to teach your clients (i.e. crossfit, etc.)?

I do a lot of HIIT workouts with my clients. (High intensity interval training). I believe it is the best way to burn fat.
I am also a BLITZ coach at Reebok Sports club, which is a
crossfit style class.

dtp_JLG_Fitness_fb24

It’s been pretty well documented that you love AC/DC’s Brain Johnson-‐who else do you love in the rock n roll world?

Joe Satriani, Steven Adler and Lita Ford.

Who would you love to see on That Metal Show who has not shown up
yet?

OZZY!

Any possibilities of seeing you interview some guests in the future?

I would love to! We will see…!

dtp_jenniferleahgottlieb_0803_fb

Any inside stories you care to share with our readers?

The guys have a star chart for who can get ready and mic’d up
first for each episode. Don wins EVERY time! We also have a
great tradition of going to The Rainbow on Sunset for our cast
party every season.

What happens at the Rainbow, stays at the Rainbow…but we have a
rockin’ time!
