TesseracT, Intronaut, Cloudkicker announce North American Tour

UK Progressive rock band TesseracTwill once again be returning to North America. It will be TesseracT’s third tour supporting their critically acclaimedAltered State album.  Former touring partners, Intronaut, who will be coming fresh off a tour of their own with Between The Buried and Me and Deafheaven will be direct support. To make these events even more special, instrumentalists, DIY prog artist, Cloudkicker, will be touring for the first time ever with the members of Intronaut as his backing band.

Comments TesseracT:

Last year we spent a few short weeks with a bunch of west coast musicians called Intronaut, stalwarts of the scene who have been honing their skills for years into an awesome blend of progressive jazz tinged metal.  For as long as we can remember there has been a home studio producer of genre defying music called Cloudkicker. He has until now been restricted to the studio. So, it’s with great pleasure that we get to rejoin our brothers in Intronaut, and be a part of Cloudkicker’s first ever tour! This will be seriously fun

Intronaut comments:

When we first met Ben a few years back and discovered the Cloudkicker album “Beacons”, we unanimously fell in love with it and have since bugged him to let us be his band. Now it is finally happening. Intronaut is absolutely over the moon about this once in a lifetime opportunity for Cloudkicker fans to hear his stuff live. Sweetening the deal even further is the fact that we get to do the tour with our favorite British chaps in TesseracT. This tour is going to kick ass!

Cloudkicker, aka, Ben Sharp elaborates:

This just happened to be a time when Intronaut was free and, incredibly, I was able to get the entire month of April off from work. We have been in touch since 2010 and they had told me a few times that we could make this happen, but it wasn’t until last fall that I decided to give it an honest effort. Having the professionalism and technical proficiency of a band like Intronaut was the piece of the puzzle that finally encouraged me to pursue this since they are making it so easy for me. I know that when we show up for the first night of the tour everything will be locked in and we can just focus on having a good time.

Tesseract Give Altered State Performance at Mr. Smalls Pittsburgh

The UK Progressive rock band TesseracT returned to Pittsburgh and to North America with the likes of Katatonia, Cult of Luna and Intronaut at Mr. Smalls. Following their dates with Katatonia, TesseracT has announced a headline tour with support being provided by Scale the Summit and Anciients-  These shows kick off October 9th.

TesseracT described these shows as an, “intense evening of dark powerful prog. It’s so cool to be apart of this bill as all 4 bands create a completely different yet compatible atmosphere.”  And that is exactly what went down as each act brough their unique flavor to the table.  But, TesseracT had that special ingredient that left everyone with a pleased palate and something to savor.  Their unique take on the genre is refreshing and not one that feels overdone (or overcooked if one wants to keep rolling with this food analogy).

TesseracT‘s latest release  Altered State came out earlier this year on Century Media Records.  This is where they began the evening and drew the audience in. Between the moody lighting, crisp and atmospheric sound, and captive audience, TesseracT definitely made their mark on Pittsburgh last night and will be welcome with open arms anytime they come back to our country again.

Altered State‘ is divided into four movements: Of MatterOf MindOf Reality and Of Energy,Altered State‘ represents the transformations that TESSERACT has gone through over the past few years.  The Law of Conservation of Energy states that: In a closed system energy is conserved, nothing is lost. It merely changes from one state to another.

Altered State was produced, mixed, mastered and engineered by TESSERACT guitarist, Acle Kahney, assisted by bassist, Amos Williams at Acle’s 4D Sounds studio, and marks the first full release with new vocalist, Ashe O’Hara.

“The concept behind Altered State is very simple. It is about change, and how life is change. We have been through a very difficult period of time over the last few years. It is a miracle that the band has survived. I feel it is the ability to step back and see everything for what it is (hence the Perspective EP) that has allowed us to get on with life and try to enjoy it. Reality is change…” [TesseracT, 2013]

Formed as a studio project back in 2003 by guitarist Acle Kahney, TesseracT immediately eschewed all well-established notions of what metal should sound like and swiftly became a unique and daring entity. By 2007, Acle had recruited a line-up worthy of his groundbreaking compositions and this new band embarked upon a quest to inject some originality and excitement back into an often myopic and lazy British metal scene. Completed by drummer Jay Postones, guitarist James Monteith, bassist Amos Williams and (between 2006 and 2009) vocalist Abisola Obasanya, TesseracT steadily accrued a devoted fan base and a formidable reputation as one of the most exhilarating and distinctive bands to emerge from the UK in decades. By the time the band signed to Century Media Records, the buzz surrounding them was simply deafening. Obasanya was replaced by new vocalist Daniel Tompkins, and the newly revitalised line-up recorded a debut album, One, which would go on to receive widespread critical acclaim, not least due to the album’s staggering six-part centrepiece Concealing Fate, which brilliantly showcased the band’s pioneering sonic approach and unstoppable arsenal of off-kilter riffs, soaring melodies and disorientating atmospherics. Countless gigs and festival performances in Europe, the US and even India added further weight to the perception that TesseracTwere a band with a glittering future ahead of them; the band’s thrilling live shows proving to be a decisive factor in the rapid expansion of their global support base.

The departure of Tompkins in 2011 could easily have derailed a less focused band than this, but TesseracT barely paused for breath as they recruited American singer Eliot Coleman and recorded the primarily acoustic Perspective EP, which emerged in May 2012 to an effusive response from critics and fans alike. Shortly after, their status as progressive metal’s most fascinating new creative force was very publicly celebrated when TesseracT picked up the Best New Band trophy at 2012’s inaugural Progressive Music Awards in London. Coleman followed in his predecessors’ footsteps by stepping down midway through 2012, but such was the momentum driving the band forwards that it was only a matter of time before they found a suitable replacement. This time round,TesseracT struck gold, discovering Brighton-based vocalist Ashe O’Hara, realising that his extraordinary voice was a perfect fit and immediately diving into the creative process for a second full-length studio album.

“Working with Ashe has been glorious,” says Amos Williams. “His ideas just fit. But, they also enhance and electrify the emotion and mood of the music, a lens that pulls it all into focus. Each track has become a story. For such a young guy, his lyrics have a unique honesty and emotive clarity that resonate hugely with all of us. Considering the bad luck we’ve had in the past, we are very lucky to have discovered such a gem, and in our own back yard, too!”
Due for release on April 27th 2013, Altered State is not just the secondTesseracT album. It is also a valedictory statement from a band that have always followed their own path and aimed higher than the vast majority of their supposed peers. With O’Hara a joyously soulful presence throughout, the new material takes the band’s original blueprint and stretches it to previously unknown limits, adding great space and subtlety to their trademark sound while never neglecting those all-important riffs and moments of melodic incisiveness.

“For whatever reason, we’ve always felt a little out of context to our friends and peers,” says Williams. “I’m sure everyone feels that, but let’s just say we’ve never quite fit. This has been a blessing for us creatively, as it has allowed us a certain freedom. As always, on this album there appears to be a rule of contradictions. Although things are less hectic than before, they are also far more delicate and tricky. The impact is less explosive, but more shattering as a result. Mood, atmosphere, melody, and experiment are the main focus. Although it may have gone off on its own journey, it is still TesseracT somehow.”

Having already tried and tested the new line-up on the road, TesseracTare primed and ready to claim 2013 as their own. With a new album that is certain to have a massive impact in the metal scene and maybe even beyond, this band have never been in a stronger position to shine a light on tomorrow’s limitless possibilities and to continue their bold exploration of music’s innate potential. The future may have arrived but TesseracT are already eyeing that next tantalising horizon…

“As with everything TesseracT, there are of course layers and ‘deeper’ meanings on this album,” Williams concludes. “One of our muses is science. A law of science called the Law of Conservation of Energy states that in a closed system, energy is conserved, nothing is lost. It merely changes from one state to another. The four movements of Altered State – Of Matter; Of Mind; Of Reality; Of Energy – are simple musings on these different stages of change, on both the personal or micro scale of things of our everyday life, but also the macro and universal scale of things.  For TesseracT, life inspires art and we tend to wear our hearts on our sleeves.”

August 2, 2013 (Los Angeles, CA) – UK Progressive rock band TesseracT will be returning to North America for two tours!  First the band will hit the road with Katatonia, Cult of Luna and Intronaut.  That tour begins September 23rd in Boston, MA and runs through October 7th in San Francisco, CA.

Immediately following their dates with Katatonia, TesseracT has announced a headline tour with support being provided by Scale the Summit and Anciients.  These shows kick off October 9thand Vancouver and are currently set to wrap on October 27th in Greensboro, NC.  More dates may be added in the coming weeks.

The band commented on their return to this side of the pond:

“North America! We’re coming back. And for not 1, but 2 tours back to back. We’ve all been missing Cracker Barrel, and Timmy Ho’s, so it’s with great pleasure that we can announce that we will be touring your fair lands again. Ever since the first tour we did with DTP way back when Ashe was called Dan, you guys have always been so cool to us. A lot has changed since then, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been showing the Europeans for the past year. Firstly we’ll be on tour with Katatonia, Cult of Luna, and Intronaut, as part of the Uncrowned and Vertikal tour. This will be an intense evening of dark powerful prog. It’s so cool to be apart of this bill as all 4 bands create a completely different yet compatible atmosphere. Then we’ll start the Altered State tour, where we’ll have support from Scale The Summit and Anciients. Two bands that stretch progressive music to its limits. All of this is great, but you know the best bit…French Toast. Everyday for 5 weeks. Maple Syrup. Bacon. TubberacT.”

TesseracT‘s latest release Altered State came out earlier this year on Century Media Records.  The entering the Billboard Top 200 Chart at #94 as well as #88 on the Billboard Top Current Albums Chart and #4 on the Hard Music Chart.

Peaceful Prog – Tesseract’s Atmospheric Altered State

tesseract

Progressive metal has taken many different forms over the years. While Dream Theater was mixing 80’s thrash with King Crimson-esque arrangements, Tool was taking sludge metal and adding incredibly intricate rhythm patterns. Nowadays, prog metal isn’t as nuanced as it was in the 90’s, but that hasn’t stopped bands like Britain’s Tesseract from pushing the genre forward. Ten years and six vocalists later, Tesseract release their sophomore studio album, Altered State, a mix of polyrhythmic beats and ephemeral soundscapes that might not set the world on fire, but still demonstrates what the progressive metal genre has up its sleeve.

Altered State is the first full release with new vocalist Ashe O’Hara, who replaced the band’s fifth vocalist, Elliot Coleman, after the band’s previous release, the Perspective EP. O’Hara’s voice isn’t what many have come to expect from a metal band. In stark contrast to the growls of Tommy Giles Rogers of Between the Buried and Me or the psalmic hums of Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, O’Hara’s melodic resonance is more akin to Kyo of Japanese metal band Dir en Grey. It’s not a high wail or a baritone bellow, instead walking the line between ascendant and smooth. O’Hara’s vocal style also distinguishes itself from former Tesseract vocalist Daniel Tompkins (who sang on the first Tesseract studio album, One), where harsher and rougher vocals appeared alongside clean melodies. O’Hara’s voice is a fine specimen that cools the burn that many other prog metal vocalists have prided themselves on.

Altered State offers ten tracks divided into four groups, with each group representing a different stage of change the band has undergone since their beginning. Considering that Tesseract has gone through multiple vocalist changes since their inception in 2003, this theme of change is clearly something of significant value to the band. The theme is one rich with ideas, though Altered State doesn’t do as much with it as expected. A major factor in a successful prog metal outing involves extended demonstrations of musicianship and creativity, and while Tesseract definitely deliver on the former, the creative element starts to wane by the last third of the album. The less successful prog metal albums usually sound pretentious, suffering from a longevity that outstays its welcome by the end. While Tesseract don’t overdo it too much on Altered State, it can be pretty difficult to distinguish one song from another. There are a few solid hooks (such as the Of Mind track “Nocturne”) but Tesseract’s atmospheric resonance is what drives Altered State both into realms of the epic and the slightly over-lasting.

Tesseract’s mastery of atmosphere is especially apparent with some great musicianship that, while not of the highest caliber when compared to bands like Between the Buried and Me, make for some wonderful songs that demonstrate a strong skill with their respective instruments. A healthy mix of rhythm and melody contribute to some memorable prog metal songs as well. Tesseract have taken the route of Messhugah when it comes to rhythm, as they’ve adopted the “djent” rhythmic design coined by Messhugah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal. The djent trappings are especially alive in the Of Energy track “Singularity”, an intricate polyrhythmic composition that takes the Messhugah style and adds a clean, atmospheric polish. The moments of innovation may be brief, but make a lasting impression. The use of a saxophone solo by Chris Barretto during the Of Reality track “Calabi-Yau” is brilliantly reminiscent of a King Crimson jam, just heavier and even more epic. While it would’ve been better to see more of these crazy breaks from tradition, Tesseract have taken solid steps forward for both themselves and the modern prog metal field.

Tesseract’s second studio album may not reach the prog metal stratosphere, but Altered State’s defining element of atmosphere mixed with rhythm is something special for the genre. These UK brainiacs prove their reverence for their predecessors, but ambitiously mix their influences together into a prog metal brew well worth their fanbase. The riffs aren’t the focus here; it’s the vibes produced by the low-tone atmosphere that make Tesseract an exceptional progressive band, but by introducing that “djent” rhythm, it becomes something beyond anything they’ve made before. Tesseract don’t abandon the prog metal traditions of intricate arrangements, but Altered State still keeps those fundamentals close to heart. Tesseract have proven that they want to change the prog metal world, and while their second LP isn’t an earthshattering album, it still is a solid listen that is bound to earn them some serious cred here in the States.

TESSERACT REHEARSING FOR UPCOMING TOUR, POSTS NEW MUSIC

UK’s progressive rock band TESSERACT has released another video promoting their UK and European tour dates, this time featuring a sample from their “Retrospect” track. The band took a break from their rehearsals to comment:

As the release of Altered State draws closer, our attention turns away from production and to reproduction: performing this album on stage. Rehearsals have been going really well, and Ashe is just showing us old hacks up, as he’s nailing the parts each day in his free and effortless fashion that drew our attention to him in the first place. It’s a very different approach that we have to take for the new tracks, as they are less about individual performances and more about a cohesive and superior whole.  But we’re confident we’ve got it right and can’t wait to get out there again to share it with our friends, wherever you may be.

Altered State‘ will be TESSERACT‘s sophomore full-length album and will be released on May 28, 2013 in North America via Century Media Records.  Divided into four movements: Of MatterOf MindOf Reality and Of Energy, ‘Altered State‘ represents the transformations that TESSERACThas gone through over the past few years.  The Law of Conservation of Energy states that: In a closed system energy is conserved, nothing is lost. TESSERACT Announces Release Date and Track Listing for New Album, ALTERED STATE

The Law of Conservation of Energy states that: In a closed system energy is conserved, nothing is lost. It merely changes from one state to another.

UK’s progressive rock band, TESSERACT, has announced that their second full length album, ALTERED STATE, will be released on May 27, 2013 throughout Europe and May 28, 2013 in North America via Century Media Records. Divided into four movements: Of Matter, Of Mind, Of Reality and Of Energy, ALTERED STATE in its purest form, is about the transformations the band has gone through over the past few years. TESSERACT elaborates:

“The concept behind the presentation of ALTERED STATE is very simple. It is about change, and how life is change. We have been through a very difficult period of time over the last few years. It is a miracle that the band has survived. I feel it is the ability to step back and see everything for what it is (hence the Perspective EP) that has allowed us to get on with life and try to enjoy it. Reality is change.”

The official track listing for ALTERED STATE is as follows:

01. Of Matter – Proxy
02. Of Matter – Retrospect
03. Of Matter – Resist
04. Of Mind – Nocturne
05. Of Mind – Exile
06. Of Reality – Eclipse
07. Of Reality – Palingenisis
08. Of Reality – Calabi-Yau
09. Of Energy – Singularity
10. Of Energy – Embers

ALTERED STATE was produced, mixed, mastered and engineered by TESSERACT guitarist, Acle Kahney, assisted by bassist, Amos Williams at Acle’s 4D Sounds studio, and marks the first full release with new vocalist, Ashe O’Hara.

The band is set to head out with longtime friends, Periphery, throughout mainland Europe and then headline dates throughout the UK just prior to album release. Worldwide touring will follow throughout the year.
