Tony Lucca and Derik Hultquist team up to hit the road together this fall// 9/28 @ClubCafé

Nashville performers Tony Lucca and Derik Hultquist are planning a 13-date tour together this fall, including stops in the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest. (See below for full tour schedule.) The tour kicks off in Decatur, GA on September 19th and wraps in Nashville on October 7th. Tickets for these shows are on-sale now
Says Lucca about the planned outing: “I first saw Derik on YouTube, actually. Needless to say, I was quite impressed. We met for coffee to talk about touring and things just seemed to fall into place. Personally, I like touring with someone whose music I’m not entirely familiar with as it really is the best way to get familiar with it. I’m really looking forward to doing just that.”
Says Hultquist of the tour pairing: “I can’t say enough about how excited I am to hit the road with Tony this fall. He has a stellar voice and I feel lucky to be a part of this tour. I know we’ll get a chance to share the stage a few times – I only hope I can keep up.”

About Tony Lucca:  Nashville-based singer-songwriter Tony Lucca spent last year focusing on his catalog, and he hit the road for an extensive cross-country run with Alex Dezen (of The Damnwells) and Christian Lopez, as well as an outing to the West Coast and Texas with Tyrone Wells. Lucca also celebrated the 10th anniversary of his album, Canyon Songs, with a very special show at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville. At the show, he performed the album in its entirety track-for-track, as well as a second set of Lucca classics from over the years. Joining him onstage at this very special event were “American Idol” winner and recent tour mate David Cook, Lady Antebellum guitarist Jason “Slim” Gambill, Nick Bearden of Jamestown Revival, Tim Jones of Truth and Salvage Co., and tour mate Christian Lopez. Also in 2016, Lucca released two EPs of material from a previously recorded session at the legendary Sun Studio (in Memphis) and another session he’d done in Muscle Shoals, AL in 2006.

Prior to hitting the road with Hultquist this fall, Lucca has confirmed a residency in Nashville this summer with a series of four free shows at The Country (110 28th Avenue North, Nashville); one already took place on June 28th, and three more shows will follow on July 27th (6 p.m.), August 23rd (8 p.m.), and September 6th (8 p.m.). Billed as “Tony Lucca and Friends,” the residency is an opportunity for Lucca to work on some new material for a forthcoming album in a live setting. Confirmed special guests for these shows include Dustin Christensen, Ernie Halter, Paul Pfau, Gabe Dixon, Barrett Baber, and many more.

About Derik Hultquist:  On his new album, Southern Iron, produced by Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Brandi Carlile, Aubrie Sellers, Lee Ann Womack) and Eric Masse (Mikky Ekko, Robert Ellis, Andrew Combs), Derik Hultquist offers rich portraits of reflection, anticipation, and stillness via lush rock-and-roll. This is his first length effort on Carnival Recording Company/30 Tigers, the follow-up to three EPs, Whether ReportLeaning on the Rain, and Mockingbird’s Mouth. This recent effort earned him widespread attention and opening slots for complementary heavy hitters including Sturgill Simpson, The Lone Bellow, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Joan Osborne, Jackie Greene, Bob Schneider, Matthew Logan Vasquez, Sean Hayes, Sean McConnell, Ben Sollee, as well as his own headlining tour.

Funny or Die Debuts “The Animated Tales of GWAR”

For the last two years animators Myke Chillian and Tommy Meehan have been working with the members of GWAR to create a “GWARtoon” that was appropriately disgusting and objectionable enough to most accurately represent the most dangerous band in rock and roll history.  After all this long and hard work, today Funny or Die finally premieres “The Animated Tales of GWAR“.  Check it out HERE.

Animator Myke Chillian described “The Animated Tales of GWAR“:

“Lead singer Oderus Urungus loses his murderous-mojo prompting the rest of the band to embark on an Antarctic quest for the cure. Weird Al Yankovic guest stars.”

Brutal front-fiend Oderus Urungus had this to say about the project–“I hate cartoons…cartoons are for kids, and kids are strictly for eating. But I just might have to back up a little and say that this is the greatest cartoon ever, even if I still hate it, just because it’s about US.”

GWAR will wrap up the first leg of the “Madness at the Core of Time” tour this weekend in Washington, DC.  This has been described as GWAR‘s best tour to date (but aren’t they all?) The tour features deathcore heavyweights and label-mates Whitechapel, Richmond, VA thrashers Iron Reagan (featuring Municipal Waste members Tony Foresta and Land Phil as well as Ryan Parrish on drums) and A Band of Orcs (who are actually a band of Orcs).

Following a short Antarctic slumber GWAR will return to the road with three shows around the holidays (December 27th – 29th) with Battlecross and Iron Reagan providing support.  Then it’s off to Antarctica again before heading “down under” for their appearance on the 2014 “Soundwave Festival”.

Oderus continued–“This first leg of the Madness tour has been everything I thought it would be and more. I feel we have paid tribute to Flattus, as we will for eternity, and moved into an exciting new chapter of GWAR behind the blistering fury of our new guitar player Pustulus…now I must get back to eating babies.”

After last year’s triumphant performance as part of The AV Club Undercover Series where GWAR gave their take of the classic Kansas song “Carry on Wayward Son” (Which can be viewed HERE) and was voted the best performance of 2012.  This year the AV Club actually invited the monsters back to participate in the 2013 edition of the Undercover Series. This year GWAR repeated as champion in the best performance of 2013 with Billy Ocean’s #1 hit single “Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car” with a little twist.  Check out their take on the 80’s classic HERE.

GWAR‘s Battle Maximus out now on Metal Blade Records features twelve brand new tracks that not only honor their departed ally, but tells the story of GWAR‘s latest struggle against what may be their greatest enemy yet…the insidious “Mr. Perfect”, who has travelled through time itself to steal the power of GWAR–the power of immortality, and use this power to mutate the human race into his twisted vision of what the “perfect” human should be. Once again GWAR finds themselves as the only thing standing between the human race and the latest super-powered shithead bent on the destruction of GWAR and the enslavement of their worshippers.

Battle Maximus can be ordered from Metal Blade Records HEREAmazon and  iTunes.

The Girls of Metal Part 1: An Interview with That Metal Show’s Jennifer Gottlieb

In the first of a series highlighting women who are famous in various genres of entertainment and unabashed about their “metal” status, Pittsburgh Music Magazine reached out to Thee Metal Girl for many of us. You probably best know her as “Miss Box of Junk” from That Metal Show, but Jennifer Leah Gottlieb is poised to make herself more of a household name. Jennifer has talents way beyond looking gorgeous and bringing out the prize box during Stump the Trunk. Read on to learn a little more about the girl we wish would spend more time in our living rooms…(on our TV’s!!!).

Do you ever have opportunities to hang out with any of the musicians pre or post show?

Yes,I do! I have had the chance to meet some of the greatest musicians of all time. I have the coolest job ever.

Since That Metal Show only films a few weeks per year, what are you
up to at the moment and what do you have in the works?

I am a personal trainer full time right now. I spend my days kicking
my client’s booties into shape. I have a few acting gigs in the works, but can’t talk about them yet. Will share soon! 😉

What was it like playing Linda in the Broadway touring version of
“That Wedding Singer”?

Linda was my dream role, so it was totally
surreal. Being on the road was challenging, but I would say it was
the greatest experience I have ever had.
I learned more about myself in that year than I ever have. I also
created life long friendships.

Since you are a personal trainer-‐what are your
favorite techniques to teach your clients (i.e. crossfit, etc.)?

I do a lot of HIIT workouts with my clients. (High intensity interval training). I believe it is the best way to burn fat.
I am also a BLITZ coach at Reebok Sports club, which is a
crossfit style class.

It’s been pretty well documented that you love AC/DC’s Brain Johnson-‐who else do you love in the rock n roll world?

Joe Satriani, Steven Adler and Lita Ford.

Who would you love to see on That Metal Show who has not shown up

Any possibilities of seeing you interview some guests in the future?

I would love to! We will see…!

Any inside stories you care to share with our readers?

The guys have a star chart for who can get ready and mic’d up
first for each episode. Don wins EVERY time! We also have a
great tradition of going to The Rainbow on Sunset for our cast
party every season.

What happens at the Rainbow, stays at the Rainbow…but we have a
rockin’ time!

Patrick Watson loves America. Last week the band brought their masterful orchestrations and pure harmonies to our airwaves via a World Cafe session and performed at Austin City Limits Festival. Last Sunday, their song “Noisy Sunday” was featured in the season premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead. What’s more American than zombies and television? “I love this show,” remarks Patrick, “nothing makes me happier than watching zombies eat each other to my music.” In November, the band will be back on the road headlining dates across the US in support of Adventures In Your Own Backyard (out now on Domino Records). A full list of tour dates is below.
