The Fall Of Hearts Tour: Katatonia, Caspian, and Uncured in Pittsburgh @MrSmalls

Katatonia have long displayed a masterful propensity for expressing the tears and torments of mortality, offering sumptuous glimmers of sonic hope to soothe our troubled souls,” so states the biography of the band via their website.  It’s not a boast it is simply a fact.  The 25-year-old band out of Stockholm has survived the test of time by consistently producing heavy tonal music that is in a category all its own.  Never relying on the same output of tunes, Katatonia has repeatedly reinvented themselves without losing themselves, or their audience. As Anders Nyström (guitar) has stated, “Our musical signals and language have changed considerably from 1993 to 2016, but I can still sense a common message in the atmosphere sustaining since day one. Maybe you could call us a progressive metal band with a deep passion for non-metal music? It’s easy to reach all the branches in the tree and let them sway when you have a firm root to climb (http://katatonia.com/biography/).”

Opening with “Last Song Before The Fade” from their new album, The Fall of Hearts, Katatonia was quick to set the intense somber tone of the evening (Set List below via Setlist.fm).  With sparse lighting and foreboding swirls of the deepest, darkest metal the band put on a soulful and unforgettable performance.

Caspian, a post-rock band from Beverly, MA were a good pairing for Katatonia as they are not as dark, but just as musically intense and talented.  At times reminiscent of a metal U2, the band has performed on the Last Call With Carson Daly which highlighted their atmospheric songwriting.

Uncured is a young progressive metal band out of NYC following in the vein of Opeth, Dream Theater, Mastodon, and Gojira.  The band has a bright future considering the critical praise for their EP release and their newly release LP on March 10. 2017.

New Deals Death Album ‘Point Zero Solution’ via Spinefarm Records September 2013

The story of melodic death metallers Deals Death began in a music college called Boomtown, where guitarist Erik Jacobson met a couple of other students. With some further twists to the story, with which we need not bother, the band released their self-financed debut ‘Internal Demons’ in 2009 to raving reviews.

In 2009 Deals Death recruited new members in Gothenburg and made the city their base. The second album, ‘Elite’, was recorded in May 2010 in Gothenburg and mixed by Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry). ‘Elite’ was released in March 2012 via Finland’s metal powerhouse Spinefarm Records became their label debut. A promo video was shot for the song ‘Fortified’ and released in April 2011. The clip made waves on the metal scene (surpassing already half a million views) and then, a fortuitous bounce launched Deals Death to a larger than just metal audience, when vocalist Olle Ekman’s ‘Death Metal Vocal Exercises’ video became a surprise YouTube hit.

Now, after five years of hard work and dedication, Deals Death has earned their name in the world of metal with tours in Sweden, Finland, Japan and the UK and having shared stages with bands such as Scar Symmetry, Hypocrisy, Dark Tranquility and making appearances at numerous festivals such as House Of Metal, Rockstad Falun & Sweden Rock; Deals Death have just started to reveal the tip of the iceberg to their potential.

The new album, ‘Point Zero Solution’, was forged in the deep woods of Grangärde, Sweden and here is band`s statement of the record:

Deals Death brings the good news!
The world isn’t going to end; it’s only becoming a horrific and gruesome place to inhabit.
On September 13th Deals Death will give you the details of this event as we release our third album via Universal/Spinefarm.
Follow this step-by-step description of the process, which breaks down the systems of nature and society.
This album contains 11 songs packed with a lyrical edge, delivered with all our blood, sweat and toil!

Pre-Order ‘Point Zero Solution’ Now!
Having introduced themselves to a wider audience with last year’s ‘Elite’, the new album ‘Point Zero Solution’ shows Deals Death’s staying power and musical evolution with lush arrangements, deadlier output through and through and melodic hooks catchier than ever before.

“A band that stands tall above others in the melodic death metal genre”

REVIEW: Swedish groove metal act The Quill show their rock determination on “Tiger’s Blood”

Remember how alternative (whatever the hell that means) music used to rock? Not the crap that is “radio-friendly”, but the stuff that used to really kick ass. Like all the nineties powerhouses, especially the grunge guys when they were still trying to make it, and the “indie” bands that rocked and didn’t really know they were indie bands yet? Well let me tell you folks, Swedish rockers The Quill certainly remember.

This should come as no surprise from a band that has been around since the nineties and released six albums in the meantime: “The Quill” (1995), “Silver Haze” (1999), ”Voodoo caravan” (2001), ”Hooray! It’s a deathtrip” (2003), ”In triumph” (2006) and “Full Circle” (2011). The core of The Quill consists of the two mainstays, guitarist Christian Carlsson and drummer Jolle Atlagic (ex. Hanoi Rocks, The Real McCoy Band). The two musical motors, whom together formed the band in the early nineties, have always worked with one single goal – a determination to show audiences all over the world the sheer quality of The Quill. This latest offering which is meant to deliver more of their sheer quality, certainly doesn’t disappoint.

In 2010 they teamed up with new singer Magnus Arnar (ex. Ground Mower, Soul 78) to fill the vacant vocalist spot. Vocally, Arnar delivers on the most recent offering from The Quill. Arnar’s vocal style lends itself well to the hard driving groove metal sound that the band has cultivated. Not too far removed from the vocal qualities present on “In Triumph” or “Full Circle”, Arnar delivers on “Tiger’s Blood” staying true to the overall sound of the band. In mid 2012, the lost son Roger Nilsson (ex. Spiritual Beggars, Firebird) returned to handle the bass guitar after having spent 7 years exploring other musical journeys.

“Tiger’s Blood” is a solid rocking entry into the musical catalog of these Swedish veterans, and it shows their relentless dedication to their vision and sound. The majority of the release is driving and energetic, with the exception of two slower tempo tracks in the middle that help to add depth and variety to the overall album. The album was released through Metalville in June, 2013 and the band is ecstatic over the times to come. The songs have a wider range, live shows will be more explosive and touring will be more intense.

The Full Circle-campaign of 2011-12 saw The Quill yet again touring extensively all over Europe and also, for the first time, in the US. Having toured and shared bill with a variety of bands, such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Monster Magnet, there’s no stage The Quill fear to tread. Known for their high-energy, take no prisoners attitude they always deliver a live-show leaving audiences grasping for air.

Deals Death Introduce New Bass Player

Swedish melo-death stalwarts Deals Death have announced a new bassist following departure of Fredrik Ljung earlier this year.

Guitarist Erik Jacobson introduces, “When we decided to go separate ways with Fredrik Ljung some time ago, we immediately set our focus on finding a replacement. And not just a new bass player but a new member who would fit the shoes of representing Deals Death on all levels. Power, strength and skill. Along with a mighty ambition to take it to the next level and a mind set to fit our own. We could only think of one person.

We give you KAMMO OLAYVAR!

Be prepared to witness some heavy bass lines and a powerful performance from this guy. Born and raised in Sweden and blessed with Hawaiian blood Kammo takes on the role as Deals Deaths bass player.”

Introducing himself to Deals Death fans Kammo comments, “I’m really excited to take on the role as the bass player of Deals Death. I feel honoured to be playing with such great musicians and can’t wait to deliver some bass tones to these killer riffs. See you all on the road this fall! Kick ass / Kammo.O”

Earlier this year the band confirmed completion of a third album and follow up to ‘Elite’ which was released last year via Spinefarm/Universal and hinting that “the fall of 2013 will be interesting… very interesting.” Details for the third album other than that it will be released again via Spinefarm/Universal have yet to be revealed. CEREMONIAL OATH to digitally release deluxe re-issue of ‘The Book Of Truth’

CEREMONIAL OATH – Sweden’s pioneers of twisted melodic death metal – will release their legendary debut album, The Book Of Truth, as a digital download in North America on April 16th via Century Media Records. Besides the album tracks found onThe Book Of Truth, this download will also include all tracks from the super rare demos, Wake The Dead and Black Sermon (on which CEREMONIAL OATH was still performing under the band’s previous moniker DESECRATOR), as well as the two tracks from the legendary Lost Name Of God 7″ (originally released on Corpse Grinder Records in 1992).

336

The Book Of Truth doesn’t follow the usual melodic approach that many bands from the Gothenburg scene established during the heyday of the scene from 1994-1999. Being neither pure Gothenburg melodic death metal nor typical old school Swedish death metal in the Stockholm vein, but more a fine mélange of both worlds, spiced-up with some technical finesse a la MORBID ANGEL and NOCTURNUS, The Book Of Truth has justly become a classic death metal album. To this day, the sound of CEREMONIAL OATH has remained surprisingly fresh and unique.

The Book Of Truth deluxe re-issue track-listing:

The Album

Prologue: Sworn To Avenge

Chapter I: The Invocator

Chapter II: For I Have Sinned / The Praise

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS unveils ‘Earth Blues’ cover artwork

Sweden’s classic rock heavyweights SPIRITUAL BEGGARS recently finished work on their 8th studio album, Earth Blues, which celebrates their 20th anniversary as band. The album will be released via InsideOut Music on April 15th in Europe and April 16th in North America.

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS’ guitarist and songwriter Michael Amott comments about the artwork:

“I had the idea for this artwork from my time as a child, seeing posters of two young lovers watching a romantic sunset on the beach, just your typical tacky bedroom art in the 70’s really…Also, growing up in what is now referred to with some nostalgia as ‘The Atomic Age’ – the threat of nuclear war was always looming over our heads it seemed. I wanted to combine these two images of my youth in one paradoxical image and Per Wiberg of Hippograffix (and SPIRITUAL BEGGARS keyboardist) really managed to capture the melancholic feeling perfectly. ‘Earth Blues,’ indeed.”

In order to promote this upcoming release as well as the band’s anniversary, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS has confirmed some summer festival appearances, in addition to a European tour in April with support by German rockers ZODIAC. See below for all upcoming tour dates:

“Right upon the release of our second album we will be marching across the States on this killer tour, a hard hitting line up of bands ready to bring darkness over the continent”, adds Morgan while introducing DEATH WOLF. “It’s the first proper tour DEATH WOLF is doing and soon, the march of the DEATH WOLF will begin! The circle of abomination is coming…”

All of these warriors will be kicking off 2013 in style– this is one tour not to be missed!

Evocation Guitarist Vesa Kenttäkumpu Answers PMM’s Burning Questions

One of the criticisms of Illusions of Grandeur among metal critics seems to be that your sound has changed on this effort and has been described as some to be “Amon Amarth meets Dark Tranquility”. How would you respond to these critics?

I´m honored because I love those bands. I think it is a natural way for Evocation to go, we are all from Sweden and Swedish death metal is quite similar to each other in a mystical way. And of course, all of us in those bands are the same age, so we have the same background and influences I think. The funny thing is when I write a song or a melody to Evocation, there always is a little bit of Finnish melancholy in it. I never think about how it sounds, I just write songs with a feeling I have. I think it is the same thing with Olli in Amon Amarth– he’s also Finnish like me, so maybe there is a connection to the roots somehow.

What type of influence did producer Robert Laghi have on the end product of Illusions of Grandeur?

Roberto supported us when we were recording and was kind of a mentor with tips about what we should think about in the recording session. He did not get involved in any kind of melodies on the album, just how to bring the melodies to the front. Roberto was also involved when Tomas did his vocals, and he was like a psychological mentor for him, supporting Tomas all the time and testing new kinds of grooves to the songs. And of course, he did the whole sound for the album with his beautiful mix, which I really love.

What are your favorite tracks from your catalog of songs to play live and why?

I think my favorite track is from our new album Illusions of Grandeur. The song’s name is “Divide and Conquer.” This song has everything; it has a groove, suitable melodies that the listener will remember, and it has a nice solo which I like very much. I love to do solos live because you have to be focused when you are playing it and that’s a challenge for me.

If you could tour with any three bands (existing or defunct), who would be on that “dream tour”?

A dream tour would be Entombed, Evocation and Edge of Sanity.

For the death metal uninitiated, what songs/artists would you recommend?

My favorite album that will always give me goose bumps is Entombed’s Left Hand Path. This album really has an epic sound, and it has melodies which are both very harmonious and brutal in a depressing kind of way. When I heard Left Hand Path for the first time, I said to myself, “I will start a band like this.” This album got me to do death metal, and I will never regret that.

What guitar gear setup are you using for this tour?

My setup is two guitars: Gibson Les Paul custom (black), ESP Eclipse (black and grey), which I always play on. The Gibson is for fun and for recording sessions at my home. The thing is that the guitar itself is very heavy on the shoulder, which is bad when you play a lot. The guitar gives you a twisted spine. The amp I use is an ENGL Savage 120, which is really good and it has a crispy nice sound. The cabinet I use is a Marshall 1969 with 25w greenback elements. And for my solos and lead stuff, I use an effect rack TC Electronics G-major, which is good to bring up the leads live.

Favorite thing and worst thing about touring in the U.S.?

I don’t know because I have never been to the US, so that’s a tricky one. 🙂 But we would love to come to the US for a tour. Let’s see what happens in the future.
