Suicide Silence Will Continue

Yesterday afternoon, after a long awaited decision, Suicide Silence has finally announced their future plans in the music industry. For the longest time, the band has kept silent on whether they were going to continue making and playing music, or just call it quits. Rumors that have been floating around were that they were looking for a new frontman, calling it quits after the memorial show last December, and/or possibly starting up a new band and retire the name Suicide Silence. The wait is over, and the members of Suicide Silence have finally made up their minds to continue on, keep Mitch Lucker in their hearts, and play in memory of him by recruiting a new frontman who can help them in doing so. Around 4:00 PM yesterday, a post was put out by the band with a link to a short sound clip of them playing “You Only Live Once” with their new and unknown vocalist. It may have only been a minute and a half teaser of what’s to come, but it was more than enough to get the feel of Suicide Silence’s return and what this new guy is bringing to the table.

For those who do not know, last Halloween, original frontman Mitch Lucker crashed on his motorcycle and ended up passing away the next morning in the emergency room. The band was about to go on tour with Asking Alexandria within a few days to. It was a very unexpected turn and a huge loss for the metal scene. After his funeral it was announced that they would play a memorial show for Mitch on December 21st, 2012, the day the world was “suppose” to end. They had multiple guest vocalist’s from various other metal bands come in to help them with the songs they chose to play. Names such as: Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel, Robb Flynn of Machine Head, Johnny Davy of Job for a Cowboy, Randy Bylthe of Lamb of God, and so many more. All of the proceeds went to the education fund for Lucker’s daughter, Kennadee.

It is still unknown who this new vocalist is. I am assuming it will be announced within the next month or so who he is though. Until then, I have a sneaky suspicion that Suicide Silence will be releasing some more teasers of them playing some of their songs with the new guy. Keep posted for more updates!

ARCANIUM TO RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM ONTOGENESIS

One of Denver’s most successful metal bands, Arcanium, is back with their highly anticipated sophomore release, Ontogenesis. This unrelenting barrage of metal cuts like a chainsaw with surprising surgical precision. The album is set to hit the streets on May 7th, 2013.

In perpetual forward motion since it’s 2007 conception, Arcanium has toured with such notable groups as Megadeth, Machine Head, Suicide Silence, Otep, and Ill Nino, capturing the attention of an extensive fan base. Ontogenesis is a testament to the band’s skill, hard work, and dedication: this intensity permeates the album from beginning to end. “Arcanium is a very interesting band. They are going to have some good things,” exclaimed Dave Mustaine of Megadeth during the 2009 End Game Tour featuring Arcanium. “Ontogenesis is not only our sophomore album, it’s our rebirth into the worldwide music scene,” says J Sinn, Arcanium’s lead vocalist. “The new sound of Arcanium since the addition of our second guitarist Adam Stewart has changed incredibly. Our fans across the world will dig the new intense sound.” As Arcanium eagerly awaits arrival of the release date, they will prepare for their album release party, which will take place in Fort Collins, CO. Following the record release, the band plans extensive national and worldwide touring through mid and late 2013.

Stick to Your Guns Has Proof Positive Message for Pittsburgh

Stick to Your Guns is one of the bands that gets into your head, settles in, and plans to stay for a long, long time. With a positive vibe and a punk/hardcore sound it’s hard not to absolutely fall in love with everything these guys put forth. STYG has played with a diverse group of bands like Motley Crue, Hatebreed, Killswitch Engage, Parkway Drive, Terror and H20. The momentum has continued for the band who has joined Motionless in White on tour; which is where we caught up with them in Pittsburgh. Though the bands differ in style, they compliment each other immensely. The straight forward OC-punk-hardcore band even had its guitarist join Motionless on stage in full make up to play a song on previous shows.

STYG’s set was fast, intense, and completely had the crowd going insane. Only into the first song, the crowd surfers accidently hit the bank of overhead stage lights and the place went dark. The band kept at it with full ferocity as the guys at the Ironworks stage-dove themselves up to the lighting rig to fix it. The sold out capacity crowd was packed to every corner, spilling out onto the stage, and screaming their lungs out, and having the time of their lives. Jesse made sure that all the fans were feeling alright and understood that even in the wake of the days tragic new of the Sandy Hook shooting that they all had the power to change things, that we were all together for a reason, and part of that reason was the love of the music we had before us. PMM has to tell you that we spent a lot of time with Josh (guitar) and he is such an awesome guy- friendly, humble, funny, and just absolutely cool on all levels. We were really impressed by his guitar work and stage presence throughout the entire evening. PMM can’t thank him enough for being such an amazing host. That’s not to say Jesse was not incredibly gracious, welcoming, and funny as well. These guys are just so uplifting and making all the right moves. Their charity work is an example to be set to all and our heart goes out to Jesse’s loss, for he grew up with Mitch Lucker (see below for The Keeping Warm in a Cold World Event). The sheer vocal power that protrudes from Jesse is not only impressive but awe inspiring a times. The rest of the crew, George, Chris, and Andrew are incredibly cool dudes as well and are so great with all of their fans as well as their performance. PMM can’t wait to have them back in Pittsburgh in July on The Vans Warped Tour.

Right now the band is putting out a 3-part mini series about “fitness on tour” for Alternative Press (check it out here). They have a lot of big projects in the works. In January, they will put on the 3rd Annual Keeping Warm in a Cold World- a two day event created by STYG to give back. All proceeds go to charity. This year the funds will go to a trust for the daughter of the late Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence.

Check out their video for the single We Still Believe. It features band members from The Ghost Inside, Sleeping Giant and Motionless in White.

The video for Against Them All features friends of the late Sam Perkins, a STYG fan who died of brain cancer. (link to the article on the whole story)

A bit more on Stick to Your Guns:
Jesse Barnett (vocals) was inspired to form a band that provided him with a medium to project his views and reflect his musical influences. Through the years he has brought a stable of accomplished musicians on board that bring with them the punk-hardcore passion Jesse has always possessed. STYG’s line up reads as a who’s who of punk/hardcore. Chris Rawson (Walls of Jericho) joined the band in 2009. Last year, the band added Josh James.
Stick To Your Guns has long been known in the punk-hardcore community. After four albums, many worldwide tours and legions of followers, the band delivered the most important effort of its career in 2012 with the much anticipated album, Diamond. Their songwriting has distinctively developed and matured. Diamond delivers a message of inspiration that anyone can relate to.

The genre-bending album debuted on the Billboard charts making it to #1 on the Heetseekers chart, placing 11 for Hard Rock Albums, 30 for Rock Albums and 116 on the coveted BILLBOARD 200.

The sudden upturn in popularity could spoil a band, but they are nothing less than gracious. Now more than ever, they seek to inject more than entertainment into their fans’ minds. They see their success as an opportunity to inspire more people with their positive message. The band often speaks to those that feel lost or discarded. “Every person on this earth is searching for who they are, where they belong and ways that they can express themselves,” said frontman Jesse Barnett.
“Diamond, is an insight to the way we view the world-the good and the bad. This is an amazing place we live in. There’s so much mystery about our existence. It fascinates the hell out of us-the pain people go through, the good people do,” Barnett said. “It’s important for all of us to understand that we all are all of those things. What’s inside of you is what’s happening outside in the world. We can’t look at everything that’s going on around us and think that we are disconnected.”
“We try to live the words we speak,” Barnett added. “We give back any moment we can. We’re not perfect-far from it, but what helps more than anything is when a kid says to us, ‘Hey man, my life was a wreck. I was in a downward spiral, and this bands music has picked me up’….This has become more than just a band for us.”

Within a mere few months of the album’s release, they have received dozens of photos of freshly inked Diamond tattoos. STICK TO YOUR GUNS has truly become more than a band, they have evolved into a movement.

Keeping Warm in a Cold World- STYG will host the 3rd Annual Keeping Warm in a Cold World- a two day event created by STYG to give back to those trying to make the world a better place. All proceeds go to charity. This year the funds will go to a trust for the daughter of the late Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence.

Persistence Tour –STYG will join Hatebreed, Agnostic Front, H2O, The Accacia Strain and more for the widely popular European Tour.

Stick to Your Guns will join the 2013 Vans Warped Tour. The announcement was made Friday, during Fuse TV’s new show, Warped Roadies.

“We’re stoked to be a part of something that has been such a big part of all of our lives growing up,” said frontman Jesse Barnett. “This band continues to take us places that we never thought we’d go, and we are proud, overwhelmed and very honored.”

CRYPTOPSY releases best of collection, ‘The Best Of Us Bleed’

Canada’s masters of brutality CRYPTOPSY have released their new devastating 2CD/digital download “best of” collection today in North America. Programmatically entitled The Best Of Us Bleed, this collection gathers 32 stunning songs in approximately 140 minutes of playing time, including 3 exclusive, newer studio songs, several rare live/demo/cover/bonus tracks as well as selected cuts from the first 6 studio albums by these technical death metal pioneers. The striking cover artwork of this compilation was designed by Toshihiro Egawa (SUICIDE SILENCE, KRISIUN, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, etc.) and the booklet contains extensive biographical liner notes by Adrien Begrand (Decibel Magazine).

As a special tribute to the band, various members of the music community have come together to assemble a CRYPTOPSY Spotify playlist (with commentary). Colin Davis of VILE says this about the band in general: “This is a band that was pretty shocking when they first came out because they incorporated a number of new qualities that really made them stand out. Their drummer played a type of hyper blast beat that was novel for the time, they used funk style slapping on the bass, they wrote a lot of really groovy and melodic riffs and then they put it all together to give you a pretty original sounding package. As they moved on over time, they continued to experiment and never seemed to care if what they were trying out would disappoint or please. They did new things for their own reasons and that is always admirable.”

“Benedictine Convulsions” from None So Vile

Stu Block of ICED EARTH / ex-INTO ETERNITY
“The lyrics are so well thought out and I love this line:
‘Infernal visions flay their souls
as their bodies contort and writhe…
Capricornus nocturnum haunts them,
from their torment springs its delight.'”

“Cold Hate, Warm Blood” from Whisper Supremacy

Charles Elliott of ABYSMAL DAWN / BEREFT
“This is one of my favorite songs from them if not my favorite for sure. It’s just so brutal and technical while still being melodic at the same time. When they put this record out melodic death metal was king, and this song just crushed all that by adding some good old school brutality. It even has an epic solo section! What more could you want?! True innovators.”

Chris Kells of THE AGONIST
“Been listening to CRYPTOPSY ever since High School when I first started getting into death metal. I think still one of my favorites would have to be ‘Cold Hate, Warm Blood’. I used to bug Chris to play that on his acoustic while tracking one of our albums. Oh and ‘Emaciate’ is also a great one.”

Joe “Grindo” Axler of THEORIES / SKARP / BOOK OF BLACK EARTH
“When I first heard the song ‘Cold Hate, Warm Blood’ off of ‘Whisper Supremacy’ I was completely floored by the drumming on it, the technique and fills played on this song kinda opened up a whole new world of drumming to me”

Mark Holcomb of PERIPHERY
“I’d probably have to say ‘Cold Hate, Warm Blood’, as it’s my favorite song off of my favorite CRYPTOPSY album. ‘Whisper Supremacy’ was such an amazing record! :o)”

“Crown of Horns” from None So Vile

Neil Burkdoll of P.O.O.R.
“I’m sure this is a favorite song for many CRYPTOPSY fans, but it was the first song I ever heard from them back in 1996. In the Chicago land area, there was a metal magazine called ‘Inner Source’ that featured a CD sampler with each issue. One issue came with ‘Crown of Horns’ on it and it really blew me away. This same sampler was also the first time I heard DYING FETUS, so it was a pretty good issue. I was really into Black Metal at the time and pretty burnt out on Death Metal, but ‘Crown of Horns’ really stood out at the time. It was pretty extreme for ’96 and Lord Worm was a very unique vocalist as well. ‘Crown of Horns’ was really catchy and showed what ‘None So Vile’ had to offer. I think it summed up the album really well. I still listen to it every once in a while even after all of these years.”

Robert Cardenas of POSSESSED / COFFIN TEXTS
“The sickest drumming I’ve ever heard with the ULTRA BRUTAL VOKILLS!!!! This song reminds me of the Milwaukee Metalfest daze, Great Death Blasting Metal!!!”

“Defenestration” from Blasphemy Made Flesh

John Laux of WARBRINGER
“‘Defenestration’ was the first CRYPTOPSY song I ever heard; I couldn’t imagine a better introduction into their world of Canadian Death Metal. This song rips. I love the bass lines, the velocity of the drums, and how intense the whole damn song is. They put a lot of grind bands to shame with this release.”

“Emaciate” from Whisper Supremacy

Daniel Dismal of CREMATORIUM / Church of the 8th Day
“I have always known about CRYPTOPSY and was a fan of their technical prowess but when I first heard ‘Emaciate’ I was floored by not only the music but the strength behind the vocals. I know a lot of people will stand behind Lord Worm as being CRYPTOPSY’s best vocalist, and he is amazing in his own right but to me, Mike D delivered a face pounded vocal delivery that took this band from a great technical Death Metal band to an amazing, ass kicking, technically proficient worldwide act.”

“Endless Cemetery” from Once Was Not

Ralph Santola ex-DEICIDE / ex-ICED EARTH / ex-OBITUARY / ex-DEATH
“It’s just intense and fucking HEAVY, it reminds me of when I first heard extreme metal, that feeling of ‘wow, now THAT is extreme!'”

“Graves Of Our Fathers” from None So Vile

Benny (manager) of HEAVEN SHALL BURN
“Heavy breakdowns, hyper blasts = perfect death metal song.”

“Phobophile” from None So Vile

Alex Erian of DESPISED ICON / OBEY THE BRAVE
“The piano intro gets you so pumped and the main riff is beyond epic. No one sounded as evil as Lord Worm back then and Flo was the fastest. The guitar solo on this track is my favorite on the record. ‘None So Vile’ will always be one of my top Death Metal records of all time.”

Mario Moreno of EXMORTUS
“I remember hearing the ‘None So Vile’ album in high school and being blown away by Flo Mounier’s drumming. I used to think SLAYER was fast haha.”

Stephan Mellul of Rock The Nation USA
“I still think they had great tracks off ‘Blasphemy Made Flesh’ and the Mike DiSalvo days, but the beginning track off ‘None So Vile’ brought the band to higher levels for the Canadian Death Metal scene when it was released. The combination of grooves, grind and technicality – without forgetting Lord Worm’s classic growls & screams – all describe what made CRYPTOPSY unique in their own way.”

“Red Skinned Scapegoat” from Cryptopsy

Shane Embury of NAPALM DEATH
“I am quite partial to ‘Red Skinned Scapegoat,’ just got some nice arrangements and spastic drumming!”

“Shag Harbour’s Visitors” from Cryptopsy

Adam Sagan of CIRCLE II CIRCLE / Drumhead Magazine
“This song embodies the best of every period of CRYPTOPSY’s career. Wickedly technical, brutal yet melodic, neck-snapping but groovy, ‘Shag Harbour’s Visitors’ is the embodiment of technical death metal mastery.”

“Slit Your Guts” from None So Vile

Ben Orum of ALL SHALL PERISH / WeNeedMerch.com
“To me, ‘None So Vile’ is classic for two reasons. The first would be its cover art. Something about it is very intriguing to me, almost haunting. Every time I see it, it grabs my attention and instantly takes me back to being 16 years old in 1996 buying it the day it came out. Reason number 2: in a time before all of this computer drum quantizing fuckery that has become so standard, NSV is incredibly raw, groovy and insanely good. My favorite track off the disc is ‘Slit Your Guts.’ The drums on that track are so chaotic and real. It sounds like it was recorded in a few takes, and has an overwhelming sense of urgency to the music, which I absolutely love.”

Danny Walker of INTRONAUT / MURDER CONSTRUCT
“This was the landmark album for CRYPTOPSY and for me; this particular song showcased what they were capable of doing at the time. This was ground breaking death metal. Very unorthodox, with the slapping of the bass and usage of clean guitar. Quirky, but brutal as hell! One of my favorites and a classic in my opinion.”

Jason Netherton of MISERY INDEX
“The introductory punch in the face, the murderous tremolo picking, some of the fastest drumming ever laid on tape, the ridiculously heavy break in the mid-section, ripping solo, and the return to yet another face-stomping flurry of riffs at the end. It really is an example of a perfectly written death metal song, and at the time, set the bar for many bands that followed in the 90s.”

Taylor Young of NAILS / TWITCHING TONGUES / CREMATORIUM
“It’s the first song I heard from them and its intensity just grabbed me, not to mention the extra hard mosh part.”

Travis Weickum of SKINNED
“Great song, reminds me of a great stabbing horror movie scene on the high guitar parts. It’s like psycho metal. Crazydeathgrind”

“Soar And Envision Sore Vision” from And Then You’ll Beg

Leif Jensen of DEW-SCENTED
“I love the craziness of its rather melodic riffs and the constant whirlwind of changing tempos and torrential breaks. I can listen to this one over and over again! I always enjoyed Mike DiSalvo’s powerful vocal delivery and his intense stage appearance and so I guess that made his two albums with CRYPTOPSY (‘Whisper Supremacy’ and ‘ATYB’) as well as the production of those records to my favorite period of this influential technical Death Metal band. DEW-SCENTED had the privilege of touring Europe with CRYPTOPSY in early 2006 (together with GRAVE and ABORTED — killer billing!) and I was pretty amazed how CRYPTOPSY pulled off their demanding sets flawlessly night after night! I have some great memories from that tour!”

Update on Mitch Lucker, Suicide Silence Singer, Dies in Crash

Lucker, 28, was riding his black 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle in Huntington Beach, where he lives, about 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the city’s Police Department. He lost control, collided with a light pole at the intersection of Main and 13th streets, and was ejected.
The motorcycle kept moving, and hit a Nissan Titan pickup. The truck’s occupants were not injured, nor were nearby trick-or-treaters, police said.

Lucker was seriously injured and was treated on scene by paramedics, then taken to UCI Medical Center. According to the Orange County coroner’s office, he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:17 a.m. Thursday.
The investigation into the cause of the collision or whether alcohol was a factor is ongoing, police said.
“There’s no easy way to say this,” the band said in a statement on its Facebook page. “Mitch passed away earlier this morning from injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident. This is completely devastating to all of us and we offer our deepest condolences to his family. He will be forever in our hearts.”
Lucker lived in Riverside from the time he started kindergarten until he was 21. Suicide Silence formed a decade ago from friends who knew each other in the local music scene, playing venues such as the now-defunct Showcase Theatre in Corona.

Greg Lucker, the singer’s uncle, who lives in Murrieta, had photographed Suicide Silence on stage. He said Thursday that before one show in Las Vegas, he saw his nephew on the side of the stage, getting pumped up for the performance.
“He looked over and he saw me and for that split second, he became Mitchell, that little boy,” Greg Lucker said.
A moment later, the singer was back into his onstage persona: a dynamic performer who bounded across the stage, contorting his face to sing the band’s gritty vocals.
The band’s debut album, “The Cleansing,” came out in 2007 and was followed by two other albums, including 2011’s “The Black Crown,” which was written in Big Bear.
Suicide Silence toured on the Mayhem Festival in 2008 and 2011 and earned two consecutive Revolver Golden Gods Awards, for most innovative band and best new band.
“We wanted to make this aggressive, heavy or fast music. It’s fun to play; it’s something to do on a summer’s night, because there’s nothing to do. It’s like, ‘Yeah, let’s have a show.’ That means everyone gets together,” Lucker said in a 2011 interview with The Press-Enterprise.

The news of Lucker’s death, spread quickly through social media, with “R.I.P. Mitch Lucker” and Suicide Silence trending on Twitter. A number of Inland musicians in the metal scene and beyond also reached out on social media.
“We’ve seen this band go from opening up at the Showcase in Corona to blowing up worldwide! Rest In Peace brother. Our condolences to his family,” Inland metal band Sangre posted on Facebook.
Lucker is survived by his wife, Jolie, and 5-year-old daughter, Kenadee. His father, Kip Lucker, is a Riverside resident. He also survived by his brothers, Cliff and Kelton, and his mother, Denise.
