GODHUNTER Promotes Disorder With “Snake Oil Dealer”

City Of Dust, the debut full-length release from Arizona’s anarcho-sludge faction, GODHUNTER, is now less than two weeks from deliverance, the fifty-minute politically-antagonizing concept album unleashing the band’s most musically diverse and lyrically thought-provoking anthems yet.

Killer reactions to City Of Dust are showing up from around the globe, GODHUNTER‘s gritty but moody blend of harsh crust/punk persuasion to their craft a welcome change of pace from some of the more practiced contemporary deliveries of sludge metal. Among the stoned-out dirges on the ever-morphing tectonic surge of City Of Dust, one of the instant stand-out tracks is the fourth of the album’s eight; the venomous “Snake Oil Dealer.” Uncoiling over nearly seven and-a-half slow-burning minutes, the agony of the band’s tonal crush is soaked with some of the most ethereal Moog-driven atmospherics of the album, in addition bearing some of the members’ brutally-honest, confrontational views on their home state’s governmental downfalls. The band released a statement on the lyrical basis of the song, aimed at some of the specific politicians, bills and propaganda they feel are deliberately to blame in recent years, some of which has been posted alongside an exclusive listen to the track via Vice Magazine’s music channel, Noisey.

The first single from City Of Dust, the equally inflamed “Brushfires,” was previously released with another testimonial from the band via Decibel HERE.

City Of Dust will see release on February 18th, a cooperative release between Earsplit’s label, The Compound, and Godhunter’s Battleground Records. Preorders for the CD are available now via Earsplit Distro HERE.

A deluxe 180-gram LP pressing is now under construction and will be available before Summer.GODHUNTER also erected their official website this week at dirtweedmetal.com, and The Compound launched thecompoundrecs.com.

With a barrage of stateside tour actions being prepped for the upcoming months and through the rest of 2014, GODHUNTER are currently notifying all area bandits of their release show for City Of Dust. The shit hits the fans in Tucson on Saturday, February 15th, a FREE SHOW with their bros in Lord Dying and a rack of others, and surely, enough cervezas to flood the Sonoran Desert.

GODHUNTER City Of Dust Record Release Show:

2/15/2014 The Rock – Tucson, AZ w/ Lord Dying, Inoculara, Lariats, Conqueror Worm, Fuzz Evil [info]

Review copies of City Of Dust, interrogations/live coverage of the GODHUNTER clan and retail info on the album can all be obtained via dave@earsplitcompound.com.

“There’s the unmistakable sludge doom fingerprints over Weedeater or Eyehategod in their DNA, but they lack the former’s zoned out weed influence or the latter’s nihilistic, drug addled hatred. What Godhunter do have in spades is riffs… City Of Dust is a record by a band coming into their own… Godhunter could become something very special one day, and this is only the beginning.” – The Sleeping Shaman

“Tales this morose and despondent need the occasional chaotic implosion, and Godhunter smear a canvas with ugly truth. These eight tracks won’t warm your bones. But more importantly, they’ll crack open your crusty, sunken eyes. Throw in gigantic riff timber and hickory-smoked rhythmic filth and we’re hearing one of 2014’s best albums. City of Dust is a structured and informed refusal of acceptance. In the sludge style, we rarely get this much substance.” – Heavy Planet

“The singer sounds like he just scraped his throat with hot lava. The guitars are at a level where the amplifiers do no longer smoke but melt. The aggression and overheating is cooled down with beer, loads of beers.” – Lords of Metal

Aloud: All about vinyl but “A Little Bit Low”

Fiery, vintage rockers Aloud, are huge fans of vinyl.  In fact, lead vocalist/guitarist Jen de la Osa almost exclusively listens to music on vinyl, and the band plans to release their forthcoming album on vinyl as well.
With a sound reminiscent of Alabama Shakes, Dr. Dog, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Black Keys, and The Love Language, Boston-based Aloud is known for their lead pair’s, “tight male/female vocals, exceptionally strong songwriting, and energy-filled live performances.” (Boston Music Live) . Henry Beguiristain (lead vocals/guitar) and  Jen de la Osa (lead vocals/guitar)  have been writing songs together since they were teenagers.  They moved from their hometown of Miami, FL to Boston, founded  Aloud, and began touring extensively in early 2008 to support their album Fan The Fury. It was during this time their constant rhythm section departed due to conflicting priorities, but in 2009, Aloud welcomed aboard Charles Murphy (bass/backing vocals). In 2010,Aloud released the folkier-edged Exile and toured the U.S. coast-to-coast to promote it, rocking major venues like  Paradise Rock Club (Boston), Mercury Lounge (NYC), The Double Door (Chicago), and Exit/In (Nashville).  Frank Hegyi (drums/percussion) joined as Aloud’s drummer in early 2012, and the four feature their refined, songwriting sensibilities on their forthcoming album It’s Got To Be Now, out 4/1/14.

The first single, “A Little Bit Low” is the perfect example of Aloud‘s signature “refined, well-crafted rock songs that still have that loose, shaggy excitement that made all of us fall in love with rock & roll to begin with.” (Elmore Magazine) It’s “catchier than a cold and equally contagious to those who listen. ” (Revolution 360)

“Raw, honest, and, in the end, a damn fine rock and roll band doing it on their terms,” (Boston Phoenix)
Aloud welcomes their energetic, guitar-driven single “A Little Bit Low” (released on Mother West Records), showcasing their, “tight male/female vocals, exceptionally strong songwriting, and energy-filled live performances.” (Boston Music Live)

Irish Modern Thrash Metal Band DEAD LABEL Releases New Single “It Burns Within”

“Modern metal is alive and well with DEAD LABEL. Their new song, ‘It Burns Within’ is the proof!” – Joel McIver, Author / Editor at Bass Guitar Magazine

“If you want something new that will absolutely blow you away, look no further thanDEAD LABEL. It’s impossible to sit still while listening! This is a band that gives you a proper kick in the ass! DEAD LABEL is everything you want in a metal band—heavy, fast, and catchy—wrapped up in a neat, no-gimmicks package. Check these guys out!” – Gabby Canella, Music Choice

Ireland’s emerging metal scene is set to receive a steel-toecapped kick in the behind last year with the arrival of Celbridge, County Kildare three-piece DEAD LABEL, whose ferocious blend of old-school influences and modern metal precision sees them take up the challenge set by their countrymen Gama Bomband English headbangers Evile.

Now, DEAD LABEL is pleased to announce the release of their brand new single, ‘It Burns Within’. The track appears on the band’s currently untitled full-length release, coming soon. You can purchase ‘It Burns Within’ on iTunes here, or stream it via Soundcloud here. ‘It Burns Within’ is mixed by Brian Virtue (All That Remains, Shadows Fall, Nonpoint).

The band promises that their upcoming album will be a fresh update to the sound heard on their 2013 Nuerra Records release, Sense Of Slaughter. You can purchase Sense Of Slaughter in full here, or stream it via Spotify.

You may recognize the biggest single from Sense of Slaughter, entitled ‘Self-Immolation’, which landed at #15 on the CMJ Loud Rock chart, receiving heavy radio and internet exposure in the UK, Europe, Stateside and Japan.

DEAD LABEL comes from modest beginnings, but are anything but quiet. Shortly after forming and winning the All Ireland Battle of the Bands “The Crypt Trials” in 2009, DEAD LABEL released a self-titled EP in October 2010. They quickly began performing at festivals and events around Europe— appearing in Belgium and Czech Rep., with a recent appearance at Aggressive Music Fest in 2013.

“We’re a live band,” says drummer Claire Percival. “We live to play live. We connect with our audience and we have an energetic show.”

Traversing even farther from home, DEAD LABEL was invited to perform at “Rocktoberfest” in Okinawa, Japan, where they played to a crowd of 8,000 people in the first year. This marked the band’s biggest performance yet! The second year that the band was invited, the US Government experienced their wide shutdown, which indirectly caused the festival to be cancelled. Regardless, the band travelled the distance to Okinawa and fulfilled their performances to local fans in several area clubs. Now that’s dedication!

In addition to those performances, DEAD LABEL also supported metal heavy weights Machine Head in their home country last year. Check out a fan-filmed live performance in Dublin with Machine Head here:http://youtu.be/Y4pJS0xk0HY

The band is touring this spring and summer in Ireland, U.K., Slovakia, and Czech Rep. More shows will be announced soon!

Review: I Killed the Prom Queen “Beloved”

The Australian metalcore band, I Killed the Prom Queen, have had some very up and down times over their time as a band. This has included lineup changes and breakups since they formed back in 2000. Just last year though, it was announced that the band was going to become a full-time band again and start to write/record a new album, hoping to release it early 2014. Well here we, early 2014, and the album has not been released just yet but just last night the band offered to have a full stream of their newest album online for everyone to experience the new era of I Killed the Prom Queen.

They start off with an intro song called “Beginning of the End” and then as soon as it ends the drums for “To the Wolves” just come blistering in to really kick off the album. “To the Wolves” was released late last year but nonetheless, it is still a great song to jam too.

The next two songs entitled “Bright Enough” and “Melior” have some very sick guitar riffs that isn’t just the usual kind of metalcore riff; they add more into it that just gives the song a nice melody and gives it a very definite sound. Don’t worry too much though, they are still a metal band so things are going to still get heavy with some breakdowns and chugging chords.

The second single off of the album, and the first music video, “Thirty One & Sevens” is probably my personal favorite off of this album. It has a very solid mix of the heavy side and the more upbeat technical side of metalcore that really gets you to jam and move to it. The riffs, the drums, and the vocals were just at their best for this song.

“Calvert Street” picks the speed back up for the album (more than it was) right before it slows down a bit for “Kjaerlighet”. While “Calvert Street” was focused more on blast beats, breakdowns, and some heavy riffs, “Kjaerlighet” was laid back and used more of an orchestra behind parts of this song to make it a lot more full then it already was.

The last four songs are easier to sum up together: The Beaten Path, Nightmares, No One Will Save Us, and Brevity. All four of these were just like the rest of the album, a very solid mix of everything you want in a metalcore band. There is no other way to put it. No song on this album was disappointing in the least. This may just be one of the strongest comebacks ever for a band. To release such a strong album after not being a full-time band in six years… its beyond impressive. I would love to say that this is their masterpiece but then again, I Killed the Prom Queen is back and they have the energy and determination right now to trump their own album right now. Things are going to get interesting.

Check out I Killed the Prom Queen’s new album “Beloved” set to release February 18th.

“…one of the pioneers of 2000s-style indie rock…” – Brooklyn Vegan

Alden Penner is a songwriter and musician based in Montreal, Canada and founding member of critically acclaimed bands such as The Unicorns and Clues. His solo recordings and film scoring have been known, cherished and circulated by devoted fans and record labels since the early 2000s.

Penner has been involved in music since his early years growing up in rural Quebec taking piano and flute lessons. He continued with trumpet, percussion and bass guitar in school band after moving to B.C. at age 9, and eventually took up the electric guitar and singing. Some of his first bands started in Campbell River while attending high school and working events in a jazz ensemble with his geography teacher. Alden Penner and Nick Thorburn (Islands) formed the Unicorns out of high school. In 2003, after moving to Montreal, they recorded the widely celebrated Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?

Until now, his only formal releases as a solo artist have been a handful of limited-run singles and 2 EP’s, with the most recent one being 2013’s Precession, 4 songs which received glowing reviews and are featured on his debut album EXEGESIS.

JOHN BAIZLEY & KATIE JONES: Vice/Noisey Premieres First Single From Songs Of Townes Van Zandt Vol II

As Neurot Recordings prepares to release Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol II this Winter, the first single from the tribute collection to late folk/country music icon is now playing via Noisey/Vice Magazine.

Neurot will release Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol II in North America — once again through a partnership with Germany’s My Proud Mountain Records, the label formed to release the first Songs of Townes Van Zandt album in 2012, which featured contributions from Scott “Wino” Weinrich, Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly — who will again handle the international release of this second installment of the series. Featuring an outstanding cast of artists who front full-time bands in addition to releasing their own solo and collaborative works complimenting this legendary but often overlooked American singer-songwriter, Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol II bears nine more TVZ covers from Mike Scheidt (YOB, VHÖL), Nate Hall (USX), John Baizley (Baroness), Katie Jones, Stevie Floyd (Dark Castle, Taurus) and Dorthia Cottrell (Windhand).

Noisey is hosting a stream of the album’s closing rendition of the Townes Van Zandt anthem, “If I Needed You,” as performed by John Baizley and Katie Jones, who both provide a mixture of heartfelt vocals to an acoustic backdrop in their remake of the beautiful yet gloomy classic. Listen in now AT THIS LOCATION.

Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol II will see digital and CD stateside release via Neurot on March 11th. Stay tuned for additional retold tales from the collection to be released in the coming weeks.

“This electric sander to the skull of a song is gloriously unstable; it moves from circle-pit-inciting speed to head-bobbing groove to elephants marching maliciousness, all in under three minutes. This is good shit.” – Metal Sucks

“The first few riffs in “Heaven” suggest straight-ahead metallic hardcore of the HM-2 collector’s variety. There’s a big, strutting mosh groove; the guitar and bass seethe with mids; the vocalist sounds like he might not have a tongue. But then, about halfway into the tune, one of the guitarists unexpectedly takes off into delay-pedal melody-land. Good cop/bad cop dynamics are endemic to the meeting points between metal and hardcore, but Illustrations play them more subtly than most. Wise choice.” – Invisible Oranges

“In Vain is an onslaught of caustic death metal growls, bonecrushing guitar riffs, and unrelenting percussion; all executed with exemplary punk breeziness.” – The Needle Drop

Boys Noize remix album out now + video “Got It” feat Snoop Dogg

(more details below)

BOYS NOIZE (Alexander Ridha) released Out Of The Black – The Remixes yesterday, including unreleased remixes from Audion (Matthew Dear), Oliver, Jimmy Edgar,Housemeister and MMM in addition to BOYS NOIZE DJ-edits.

Boys Noize shared the official “Got It” music video featuring Snoop Dogg dancing to Boys Noize’s signature raw vibe and sound via Dazed & Confused HERE . The remix album features the Blood Diamonds remix of “Got It”, the Snoop Dogg collaboration first performed live at Ultra Music Festival (view live concert footage HERE).

In March, Boys Noize will invade Los Angeles with 4 uniquely curated events between shows at Austin’s SXSW and Miami where he will play several shows, including Boysnoize Records events. Please see details below.

The album’s Jimmy Edgar remix was premiered via Rolling Stone HERE . “Jimmy Edgar is one of my favorite producers right now,” Ridha tells Rolling Stone. “On his remix he took the funk essence of the original and flipped it to a darker but club-friendlier banger. So killer!”.

In the past year, Boys Noize has toured the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and South Africa with his signature SKULL, and performed headline shows at ULTRA, Bonnaroo, HARD Summer and HARD Day Of The Dead. In addition to releasing the GO HARD EP last June, Boys Noize teamed up with Skrillex this year to form the new group Dog Blood and lit up Coachella, Lollapalooza, Electric Zoo and HARD Summer with an electrifying live show. Entertainment Weekly described the Dog Blood debut at Coachella as “the world’s most joyous Satanic ritual. It was mystifying but fascinating—the Sahara Tent became its own congregation complete with everything but the swinging incense.” In September 2013 Dog Blood released the Middle Finger Part II EP (accessible HERE).

The remix album is released on Boysnoize Records (BNR), the label Alexander Ridha founded 2005 in order to allow himself to retain full artistic freedom while releasing his own music under the name Boys Noize and other monikers. BNR became a home for multidirectional quality electronic music. The Berlin-based anarchist collective are celebrating their 100th deafeningly successful release incl. albums from high-ranked artists Spank Rock, Siriusmo, Housemeister, Strip Steve and SCNTS, and EPs from Djedjotronic, Boody & Le1f, Peaches and UZ. – and of course BOYS NOIZE‘s debut Oi Oi Oi (2007), POWER (2009) and Out of The Black (2012). Alex has also released his highly acclaimed FABRICLIVE 72 (stream HERE) and BNR’s Boysnoize presents Dance Mania (stream HERE.)

“Here are my favorite released & unreleased remixes of my Out Of The Black album incl. Chemical Brothers, Justice, Chromeo, Oliver, Jimmy Edgar, Audion (Mathew Dear), Blood Diamonds + 2 DJ-edits of mine.” – Alex Ridha“My aim was to take the rise and fall of the original song, but engross it within a completely different system of layers and groove. It’s as if the song did I’ts thing at one club, grabbed I’ts coat and went to another club across town to take on a new life.” – Matthew Dear / Audion

“When I received the remix request, I knew what I wanted to do immediately – to bring the ‘clowns’ from dark to light, from rap to techno and ready for the dance floor circus!” – Housemeister

“This remix was really fun to work on, so much that I ended up doing two.. one that Alex used for his live show and is now coming out and the other for the single, really happy to be part of this. I wanted the remix to sound like a power tool cutting through, and coincidentally thats what the vinyl looked like.” – Jimmy Edgar

” …evokes classic, synth-steered modern rock and highlights frontman Kyle Wilson’s hypnotic voice.” – Rolling Stone

“ …a heart slowing way down, big exhales and even bigger inhales.”

“The group’s dynamic arrangements and instrumentation provide the perfect bed for singer-songwriter Kyle Wilson’s shape-shifting voice…” – NPR

Brooklyn indie rock quartet Milagres will release their sophomore full-length album,Violent Light, on February 25 via Kill Rock Stars in the US (2/24 via Memphis Industries in the UK). The Wãve – Do Right Ü Gain Success (D.R.Ü.G.S)

tream/download Do Right Ü Gain Success (D.R.Ü.G.S) on SoundCloud

Reaching Higher PR | @GatesWave | K. Gates on MTV

Reaching Higher PR presents Big Easy rap standout The Wãve’s brand new single,Do Right Ü Gain Success (D.R.Ü.G.S)”. The anthemic track and video promo are the first media drops from his upcoming album Million Dollar Day due February 2014.

The respected MC, film producer, and budding fashion mogul formerly known as K. Gates flips the D-Boy stereotype on its head. Beyond its seemingly hood glorified connotations, the title represents an alternative chest-beating declaration: Do Right You Gain Success. “I don’t think I’m nobody except myself. I got it out the mud, I ain’t expect no help”, The Wave proclaims over the gloriously turned-up track. This coming from a man who did a stint in federal prison for what he describes as, “A lot of nefarious ill gotten gains”.

The artist has never forgotten his past, but says he continues to move forward. “The Wãve is a title better suiting who I am today. It fits with what I’m doing in music, film and the clothing industry. I’m making Wãves.” The busy lyricist was recently featured in BET’s Music Mattersseries as a member of the hip-hop trio the Rap Pack and performed on the highly-rated 106 & Park. He also turned his attention to the fashion world as a partner in the clothing lineGorgeous Gangster. The buzz heavy street wear has been worn by such rap heavyweights as Future, Waka Flocka Flame, and Jim Jones.

THE SOCKS: Psychedelic Fuzz Rock Collective Premieres New Track Via The Obelisk

The riff wranglers at The Obelisk, who are celebrating their fifth year of apex underground rock coverage, offer up an exclusive premiere of “Gypsy Lady” from French psychedelic fuzz rock collective and recent Small Stone signees, THE SOCKS!

The fiery new psalm comes by way of THE SOCKS‘ self-titled debut full-length. Slated to drop this Spring, The Socks was recorded and mixed by Raphaël Cartellier at Studio Cartellier, France, mastered by Christopher Goosman (Early Man, Sasquatch, Dixie Witch, Solace et al) at Baseline Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan and features nine tracks of road-tripping, booze-binging goodness where thick, glassy-eyed, jams swell into kaleidoscopic riff torrents, gristly vocal serenades and hypnotic grooves.

Elaborates The Obelisk of the tune, “Vocalist/guitarist Julien Méret solos fluidly over fellow six-stringer/backing vocalist Nicolas Baud’s keyboard work as drummer Jessy Ensenat sets the march and bassist Vincent Melay runs around and through the riffs in heavy ’70s tradition. If ‘Gypsy Lady’ has anything in common with [recently leaked] ‘Some Kind of Sorcery’ – other than being the same band on the same album, duh – it’s a righteous slowdown, this one arriving after two minutes into the track’s total five, marked out by insistent wah in the guitar and a classically doomed stomp in the rhythm section, giving way to a screaming lead and tense build back up to the original shuffle.Add to this a potent hook and I’m not sure what else one could reasonably ask of THE SOCKS that they’re not delivering.”

Adds the band, “The atmosphere of ‘Gyspy Lady’ reminds us of a bizarre psychedelic circus, going from a progressive acceleration to one of the darkest partS we’ve done. This song is like a trip through different universes that make it a perfect representation of the album.”

Get trippin’ with “Gypsy Lady,” courtesy of The Obelisk, HERE.
Additionally, fans can still check out the video for “Some Kind Of Sorcery” at THIS LOCATION.

THE SOCKS are a duel-guitar French foursome formed in Lyon in 2009. Their 2010 EP, entitled Side Aoffered up five well concentrated songs from a band still finding themselves. Inspired by the teachings of Sabbath and Zeppelin, THE SOCKS supported the release by playing with an array of national and international acts, boasting intensely energetic gigs while continuing to develop their style. The next two years drove the band to write darker, heavier, songs that were more calculating and less frenetic. The resulting 2012 EP, Bedrock spouted a pseudo psychedelic, neo-grunge moodiness that proved captivating upon first listen.

The Soda Shop dubbed it “some pretty epic fucking stoner rock,” while Church Of The Riff opined, “The entire EP shows that THE SOCKS know how to write damn good songs. Everything sounds fleshed out and exciting, without ever getting repetitive or redundant…The riffs, vocal harmonies, tasteful solos and keyboard work show a band that knows exactly what they are doing.” The record eventually caught the ears of Small Stone Recordings. During the Fall of 2012, THE SOCKScompleted their first European tour. Drawing on experience garnered from festivals and gigs alongside Karma To Burn, Red Fang, Truckfighters, Horisont, Mars Red Sky, Black Rainbows and many others with whom they share various elements while still maintaining a personality all their own, they were instant crowd pleasers. As the band continues to thrust themselves into Europe’s next generation of heavy rock ‘n’ roll beside acts like Abrahma, Deville, Asteroid, Isaak, Black Rainbows and Mother of God, Small Stone is pleased to bring their debut full-length to the masses on March 18, 2014. Further info, including preorder links, to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Praise for Temples:

“‘Colours To Life’ adeptly balances both their idols’ folk-pop roots and psych-rock branches . . . It’s an unearthing of a time capsule for sure, but ‘Colours To Life’ still can feel like a breath of fresh air.”

– Pitchfork

“a small-scale epic. “Mesmerise” does just that, somehow cramming six or seven minutes’ worth of propulsive hallucinatory pop into just under four. Tame Impala, meet your fiercest competition.”

– Stereogum

“It’s prim but powerful, shifting from jittery verses to booming, Zeppelin-esque choruses. And, for your own good, just go ahead and leave that sugar-sweet guitar hook where it’s stuck now – in your brain, corkscrewing deeper and deeper, without any hope of ever exiting.”

– SF Weekly

“Temples specialize in ’60s-washed psychedelia, blending anemic vocals and shaggy melodies into a wonderfully murky swirl.”

“with their retro-inspired debut Sun Structures…they seem poised to live up to-and, yes, surpass-the hype.”

– Nylon

“Temples arrived with a fully developed sound… Stereo-panned guitars jangle brightly as background vocals drift away in the distance like morning mist. Tambourines discreetly haunt the margins of the soundscape as sonorous, loosely-tuned drums ring in the foreground under a memorable vocal hook.”

SUNN O))) & ULVER: Pitchfork Advance Playing Terrestrials Collaborative LP

Finally available to the public this week, is Terrestrials, the expansive, ghostly, collaborative works created by the members of SUNN O))) and ULVER on an improvisational nocturnal whim.

Following their 200th gig, playing before 2000 people at the Øya Festival in Oslo, Norway, August 10th, 2008, SUNN O))) ended up in ULVER‘s studio, Crystal Canyon, and over the course of the night they created three live pieces which faded out at dawn as the northern sunlight began creeping into the space. Featuring the shared efforts of Stephen O’Malley, Greg Anderson, Daniel O’Sullivan, Kristoffer Rygg, Jørn H. Sværen and Tore Ylwizaker, with ghost appearances by Ole-Henrik Moe and Kari Rønnekleiv (viola/violin), Stig Espen Hundsnes (trumpet) and Tomas Pettersen (drums), Terrestrialswas produced by Stephen O’Malley and Kristoffer Rygg, mixed by Anders Møller at Crystal Canyon during February and March 2013, and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone, London. Art direction was handled by Stephen O’Malley, featuring a portrait of our sun, captured in the wavelength of hydrogen alpha light — 656.3 nanometers in the deep red — on June 10, 2012 by Alan Friedman.

As Southern Lord releases Terrestrials this week — the album officially available to North American audiences tomorrow, Tuesday, February 4th — Pitchfork is now playing the entire LP as an Advance feature. Tune in and listen now AT THIS LOCATION.

Digital orders of the album can be placed HERE and for the physical versions HERE.

Following Terrestrials‘ release, ULVER will be on tour throughout Europe over the coming months, additionally having confirmed a date in Moscow, Russia in April as well as an American appearance in may at the massive Maryland Deathfest in the Baltimore in late May.

THE BELLICOSE MINDS: Seminal Release From Portland Goth/Punks Reissued Via A389; Noisey Streaming Entire LP

As A389 Recordings prepares for the official remastered reissue of The Buzz Or Howl Sessions — the out-of-print 2009-released recordings from Portland, Oregon’s THE BELLICOSE MINDS — Noisey is now streaming the record.

THE BELLICOSE MINDS likes to keep the music dark, and sinister, always throwing cynical thought to the foreground, flowing with a dark, early-’80s Gothic rock edge. Having exposed the rock underworld to an array of independent releases since their incarnation in 2008, The Buzz Or Howl Sessions is considered to be some of BELLICOSE MINDS‘ core, seminal material by their devout, underworld fanbase. Self-citing influences from The Chameleons, The Sound, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and Danse Society, and of course the rain the Northwest continually brings, the energy and purposefully dated tone of the album bears familial roots to TSOL, Agent Orange and some of the darker West Coast punk/hardcore acts of the mid-late ’80s, and finds them on a regenerative plateau with contemporary acts like Beastmilk and Alaric. Initially self-released only as a five hundred-copy run on dubbed cassettes, A389 Recordings will officially re-release the long out-of-print The Buzz Or Howl Sessions for the first time ever on vinyl on February 7th, in both black and clear color schemes. The initial masters of the record have been completely remastered at Audiosiege, and the artwork and layout feature a full redesign.

Sink into the melodic infectiousness of The Buzz Or Howl Sessions via Noisey now AT THIS LOCATION.

THE BELLICOSE MINDS have a plethora of new material written and their next full-length — the follow-up to 2013’s The Spine LP — is in the works and will see release through A389 later in 2014. Havingtoured and performed at key underground punk festivals in North America in the past, new live actions for the band will be choreographed with the release of their new album. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming months.

Red Hot Rebellion Announces New Album & Comic Book

A full-length comic book AND concept album about a band of intergalactic heroes out to save Earth with the power of rock ‘n’ roll.

A comic book AND an album? Say what!?

You heard it right! Red Hot Rebellion II is a full-length comic book AND music album. Both go together like peas and carrots. Like peanut butter and jelly. Like Batman and Robin. Like Marshall amps and rock ‘n’ roll!

In their first self-titled album, Dayton, OH rockers, Red Hot Rebellion, released a comic book where each single page of the book went along with each single song on the album. RHR bassist/vocalist, Jim Tramontana notes, “It has been super popular with music fans, collectors, and the comic con crowds. So, we decided to expand on the concept and create a more expansive story-telling universe. The music, the lyrics, the story, and the art are all inextricably linked together in one super awesome visual and audio experience.”

  • The innovative concept! This is a full length, 28-page comic book AND 13-song album. The comic and album are two parts of the same story.
  • The great art! Amazing pencils by Scrap/Seven Sisters artist, Chris Martin. Colors by IDW colorist, Julie Wright.
  • The fun story! For fans of Rock & RuleHeavy MetalThis Is Spinal Tap, andMetalocalypse, this is a fast-paced, high-stakes adventure with a side of humor.
  • The amazing music! 13 high energy tracks of pure rock fury! Whether you call it arena rock, punked up metal or metalish punk, it’s 13 explosive megatons of rock ‘n’ roll!

What’s it all about?

In all the universe, only a handful of sentient worlds create music, let alone the most evolved form of music: rock ‘n’ roll. Earth was on track to be admitted into the Galactic Union, but somewhere along the line its rock ‘n’ roll turned weak. RED HOT REBELLION, the second best band in the galaxy, has been sent to Earth in order to steer humanity back on its proper path. But it looks like they’ve hit a few snags…

Curtis Harding; Soul Power Out 4/22 On Burger Records, Listen To “Keep On Shining”

Soul isn’t a feeling, a sound or a movement. It’s a connection, a current in the air — the spark of recognition, emotions leaping across live wires. It’s the way a sinewy bassline steers your hips and eyes to the stranger across the club. It’s how a handful of humble words can give millions the inspiration to overcome. It’s the genius of a simple chorus that can explain the hard truths you couldn’t last time you saw her.

Curtis Harding says that soul music, and his music, speak for themselves. It’s self-evident on the Atlanta artist’s debut, Soul Power, out 4/22 on Burger Records. The driving sound of his electrified Stratocaster, the foot-stomping backbeat and the lyrics swimming in reverb — with something this flourishing, it’s almost reductive to just dig around the roots.

Harding’s style was born in Michigan and bred on the road, a restless childhood spent singing gospel alongside an evangelizing mother, then cultivated in Atlanta, where he sang backup forCeeLo Green and befriended the Black Lips (he plays with Cole Alexander in Night Sun).

There’s a foundation to the stirring soul Harding has created. “Gospel is inspiring,” says Harding. “From hardship and trials, you make something beautiful. It’s the history of black people in America, what happened to us during slavery, it’s the foundation of blues, R&B, soul, country, rock.” But he’s not just preaching to the choir — Harding’s out there on the road, singing alongside everyone else looking for something real. Look for the first real taste off Soul Power today on The FADERwho premiered the song “Keep on Shining.”

THE WOUNDED KINGS: Revolver Magazine Premieres “The Silence”

Today, UK doom conjurers, THE WOUNDED KINGS, in association with Revolver Magazine, offer up another taste of bottom-heavy brilliance with “The Silence.”

The latest canticle comes courtesy of the band’s forthcoming new long player, Consolamentum.Dubbed “unspeakably dark” and the “richest listening experience the band has concocted to date from any of its lineups,” by popular riff portal The Obelisk, who listed Consolamentum among their most anticipated albums of the year, the record was produced by sound sorcerer Chris Fielding (Electric Wizard, Primordial, Winterfylleth et al). Recorded and mixed in just six days completely live during one of the most scalding weeks of the year in a studio miles away from civilization, the seven expansive tracks that comprise Consolamentum capture a true sentiment of isolation, gloom and looming misfortune. Led by the consuming vocals of front woman Sharie Neyland, who seemingly casts spells with her dark, prophetic words, THE WOUNDED KINGS dispel a singular heaviness that’s difficult to dismiss. In a poignant review of the record The Sleeping Shaman fittingly relays, “A dense cloud of ominous riffs floats across the void with subtle, sad melodies slithering through the thick fog. Droning dirges soaked in occult vibrations, guided by the enchanting clear voice of the high priestess of doom, emerge from this cloud. Enraptured and hypnotized I stand, my mouth opened in awe of this colossal monster that is coming to devour me. Yet I refuse to turn and run. I want to be swallowed up in this hungry, monstrous mist and be torn to shreds by the siren in its center.”

Get down with your sinister self with “The Silence,” now playing at Revolver at THIS LOCATION.

And if you missed it, you can still check out the the title track, currently streaming at Vice/Noisey HERE.

Overcoming numerous lineup shifts since their formation in 2005, THE WOUNDED KINGS – Neyland, guitarist/keyboardist Steve Mills, guitarist Alex Kearney, bassist Al Eliadis, and drummer Myke Heath – have continually stunned audiences with their commanding stage personae. The two-time Roadburn alumni are adored by attendees and popular festival promoters, who call the band, “British doom of staggering power that is made all the more distinct by the unsettling presence of singer Sharie Neyland, who stands on stage almost trance-like, invoking her lyrics in a chanted voice that holds the entire venue in thrall.” To date, the Dartmoor-based five piece has released three full-length studio albums and a well-received split album with Richmond, Virginia’s Cough. The band has been finding a growing American audience since the release of 2011’s In The Chapel Of The Black Hand, the first offering to feature Neyland.

Consolamentum will be released in North America via Candlelight Records February 25, 2014. Digital preorders are currently available via iTunes HERE.

Alternating between otherworldly interludes like the strange and shivering ‘Space Conqueror’ and slabs of spacey doom like ‘Lost Bride’ and the title track, THE WOUNDED KINGS craft a soundscape that is part coven, part Sci-Fi epic.” – Exclaim

“One of the strongest assets of English doomers THE WOUNDED KINGS is the soaring gothic vocals of Sharie Neyland, who’s croon sails eerily over the band’s massive riffs and ominous keyboards. It’s clear that elements of My Dying Bride’s massive sound is a strong influence, one that sustains in the title track from the band’s LP Consolamentum.” – Vice/Noisey

“Sinister atmosphere, occult/fantasy themes, wistfulness and sorrow all combine to give a very complete record that no enthusiast of the doom genre should be without.” – The Sludgelord

THE WOUNDED KINGS sound is so organic that the room actually starts to feel damp and musty…” – Blabbermouth

“ …adding in big beats, subtracting the scuzzy guitars, smoothing out the chorus, and having Alcock give his best Jack-White-yelping impression.” – NYLON

“The New Royales’ diverse makeup … does add to the uniqueness of their sound but their musical boundaries are their own and there, there are no borders.”
– Ladygunn

“…a sticky indie edit of the old-school, feel-groovy joint.”  VIBE

The New Royales have a background as interesting as the music they create together. The band just released Freedom’s For The Brave: an album of covers featuring some of their various influences, including tracks by Depeche ModeThe White Stripes,Jefferson Airplane & more.

The band previously unveiled their interpretation of The Monks’ classic, “Drugs In My Pocket,” and their irresistible take on The White Stripes’ “Fell In Love With A Girl.”Today, they’ve unleashed their “polished, jaunty take” on Foster Sylvers’ 1973 classic,“Misdemeanor.” The MP3 premiered with PopMatters, and is available HERE.

The New Royales’ Liz Rodrigues recently lent her voice to Eminem’s latest hit, “Survival.” 2-time GRAMMY winning (4-time nominated) producer, DJ Khalil, has worked with the likes of Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Drake & Kendrick Lamar. In addition, DJ Khalil and Liz, along with Canadian multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Erik Alcock & Chin Injeti, have co-written with Pink on her 5 million albums sold, The Truth About Love, Pitbull’s Can’t Stop Me Now & Eminem‘s hit record Marshall Mathers LP 2 (“Survival”), which debuted at #1 on the iTunes album chart.

Hailing from separate parts of the world; Liz, Erik, Chin & DJ Khalil, The New Royales’ diverse makeup lends a hand in the uniqueness of their sound, pushing their own musical boundaries whilst still remaining a cohesive unit.

Their diverse backgrounds and unifying passion and respect for music has led to a sound that is eclectic and futuristic with a twist of the past.
