CHILD BITE continues to astound ears with the apocalyptic sounds of Negative Noise, out now on Housecore Records. The wild, forty-seven-minute ride was produced by label head Philip H. Anselmo, mastered by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer), and is where the Venn diagram of Black Flag, Voivod, and The Jesus Lizard truly overlaps.
The Sludgelord notes, “CHILD BITE creates an idiosyncratic racket, a chaotic collision of off-kilter punk, the weirder end of ’80s hardcore and rumbling post-punk. Negative Noise is an invigorating blast of dissonance, a blend of familiar influences twisted into their warped vision. Shawn Knight’s hyperactive drawl makes a compelling foil to the band’s manic yet inventive playing, as his Jello Biafra via Mike Watt drawl varies in intensity to match the song’s twists and turns.” New Noise Magazine calls CHILD BITE‘s Negative Noise, “…an adventurous slice of loud rock…They have the aggressive force of hardcore, but it’s filtered through grimy noise rock…Negative Noise showcases a band firing on all cylinders.” Brave Words observes, “The danger with this sort of artsy punk is that it can skirt a line between really interesting and creative and just really annoying and grating, really fast. Most bands who do this sort of thing end up being in the latter category, but CHILD BITE stay listenable, thanks to a ton of interesting and cool guitar work (check out ‘Video Blood’) and an ability to keep things toe-tapping and relatively rockin’, even if it’s rarely with a straight beat and is certainly never with an expected twist or turn,” adding, “References within the sphere of metal are hard to come by, but imagine if the first Mr. Bungle album wasn’t annoying circus music, and then remember that this band once did a 5″ record of Anal Cunt covers with Phil Anselmo on vocals, and you’re getting there.” Punk News concurs, “This is for the open minded punk, headbanger or weirdo. If you like your music a little on the ugly side, you owe it to yourself to check them out. (Especially if you get a chance to see them live.) Negative Noise can be a hard record to love, but ultimately it’s worth the effort.” No Clean Singing notes, ” Negative Noise possesses a brilliance and individuality all its own and is a refreshing breath of fetid air in an era saturated with a d-beat-only approach to punk and hardcore,” while KNAC hails, “…an all-over-the-place shitstorm of punk/hardcore, metal, noise/post rock, prog and even surf music in Brandon Sczomak’s shrill guitar jangle…it sounds sorta like someone stuffed Mr. Bungle/Fantomas, Voivod, old Clutch (especially in Shawn Knight’s husky baritone and seemingly extemporaneous delivery), Black Flag and The Jesus Lizard into a blender, pushed ‘grind’ and then forget to turn it off.”

Holy White Hounds Invade Pittsburgh on 7/22 @SmilingMoose

Alternative/indie rockers Holy White Hounds have a headline show at Smiling Moose on July 22nd. The band will be performing songs off their debut albumSwitchblade. They are climbing the Rock Radio charts (currently at #18) with their single ‘Switchblade’. A guy from Billboard come out to their NYC show stating, “I would recommend their show to anyone”.

The Holy White Hounds story begins in 2005 with the friendship of founders and primary songwriters Brenton Dean (vocals/guitar) and Ambrose Lupercal (bass), who later on added James Manson (guitar), and Seth Luloff (drums).  The resulting album, Sparkle Sparkle, coolly conjures The Strokes, Beck, Nirvana, Queens of The Stone Age and The Pixies. The band has been featured on the Rock homepage of iTunes as a New Artist Spotlight, and Apple Music Rock has added the band to their “Ones To Watch” playlist. They have even shared the stage with Cage the Elephant, Cake, Wavves, and Rob Zombie.

BLACK FAST returns with Lord Dying, Child Bite & Joel Grind

We had the privilege of seeing Black Fast play with Battlecross when they were last in Pittsburgh and we highly recommend that you get out there for one of their tour dates.  Fortunately for Pittsburghers, they will return to the awesome Smiling Moose August 30 with Lord Dying, Child Bite (another killer band we saw with Down), and Joel Grind.

Watch our new live video from Saint Vitus in Brooklyn last month!
See you on the road starting August 30. Until then, we’ll be busy writing new tunes.
Cheers! — Black Fast

Sleepy Sun in Pittsburgh, 3/2 @Smiling Moose

Sleepy Sun released their fourth LP, Maui Tears, last month via Dine Alone Records. It’s more experimental and dynamic than the band’s previous releases, containing catchy, psych-tinged melodies, softer, dreamier tracks, and some of their heaviest material to date. Maui Tears has earned praise from SPINStereogumNoiseyEntertainment Weekly & more.

Sleepy Sun is in Pittsburgh, 3/2 @Smiling Moose

To get an idea of what you can expect from the band live, check out a recent session they did w/ AltarTV, here.

In the six years since Sleepy Sun released the White Dove 7”, the Northern California band sometimes seemed to live the lives of a hundred bands. They toured incessantly, shed old skin, tore down walls with riffs, and explored black smoke, barrel-dark songs, and studio sheen—all with a core that has survived since the band crawled from the dusty sage-scented Santa Cruz underbrush.

It’s that core, and the experiential sum of those hundred lives, that shape the band’s fourth release Maui Tears, due for a world release through the Toronto-based independent label, Dine Alone Records.  In the sounds of Maui Tears, you hear echoes of nights shared with fellows and allies like Arctic Monkeys and Black Angels…a band growing self-assured as studio presence…the elasticity and tensions of a creative brotherhood. And like every Sleepy Sun record, it deftly walks the borders and boundaries between hooky power pop classicism and hazy, primer-grey Camaro rock—all colored by a lurking sense of fog, unease, and mystery at the corners

There has always been a sort of effortlessness in what Sleepy Sun does—derived, probably, from decades-old friendships within the band and months stuffed in vans traversing and criss-crossing continents. It’s heard readily in the songs of Maui Tears as well as the band’s now-well-cultivated roles as instrumentalists.

The dovetailed fuzz riffage of guitarists Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss is reconstituted from equal parts primordial stoner ooze and blue crystal shards. Lead vocalist Bret Constantino—blessed with the pipes to holler from the hills—belts lines that alternately bristle with attitude and melt with drowsy ease. The rhythm section of Brian Tice and Jack Allen is a seamless collision of fluid science, heavy lifting, and the laconic—spun into a skyscraper-scaled monster gait.

For long-time friends of the band, Maui Tearswill be an audible evolution. The culmination of voyage that has now logged miles nearing infinity and made echoes enough to fill canyons. For newcomers, however—and listeners weary of heavy rock’s monochrome halls and guitar pop’s ever-thinner candy veneers—Maui Tears and indeed Sleepy Sun itself, is the warm cabin where the better spirits of both worlds bed down, share ghost stories, and watch the fire flicker off into dreams. –Carmy Simps, Frisco, USA

PYRRHON: Progressive Death Metal Collective To Unleash Relapse Debut/ 3/20 @PGH’s Smiling Moose

New York City progressive death metal collective and recent Relapse signees, PYRRHON (pronounced peer-on), emerge from the urban decay with a nightmarish offering of physically and psychologically mauling extreme metal. Titled The Mother Of Virtues, the band’s sophomore full-length is a mind-bending fusion of clanging death metal, surreal psychedelia, dark jazz rhythms and delirious storytelling. Recorded with Ryan Jones (Today Is The Day, Mutilation Rites) and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice), the nine tracks comprising The Mother Of Virtues takes its listener on a harrowing journey into the darkest corners of musical severity. Recommended for demented souls who worship at the altars of Gorguts, Ulcerate, Cryptopsy, Portal, Deathspell Omega, Today Is The Day and the like.

Elaborates vocalist Doug Moore: “We focused on capturing an organic, spontaneous sound on this album. Consequently, we tracked most of the album live; most of its quieter moments and solo breaks are partially or entirely improvised. We like to let the chips fall where they may.”

Sear your ears with teaser track “Balkanized,” currently streaming via Soundcloud HERE or YouTube HERE.

The Bunny The Bear Let Loose @ The Smiling Moose Pittsburgh

Written By: Valerie Wallach

Frankly, I had no clue what to expect when I headed to “The Bunny The Bear” show this Tuesday night, January 21. My only prior knowledge of the band was that these two guys from Brooklyn have been shocking critics with overtly eclectic jams that blend elements of heavy metal, electronic, and pop music—a combination that seemed nearly inconceivable. Oh, and, I heard they wear plastic bunny and bear masks? Uhh, what? I was a little skeptical about the concept overall. But…clearly there’s a ‘but’ brewing here, so I’ll admit it. The Bunny The Bear put on one hell of a show.

Donning their animal masks, Matthew Tybor “The Bunny” and Chris Hutka “The Bear” came out with raging energy to a small but loyal crowd. The opening song “In Like Flynn” from their latest album Stories displayed evident techno influences with a colorful beat, while Tybor’s shrill, piercing screams were the perfect contrast to Hutka’s low, guttural vocals. And with that, The Bunny The Bear was let out of its cage. Fans in the audience—frequently sporting bunny ears themselves—were thrilled to hear “Lonely” from 2012’s album The Stomach For It as well as “Aisle” from 2011’s If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say… Feverish dancing quickly turned into moshing as this distinctive crowd worshiped the band’s unusual style. “Hey, Allie”—a tune also from their new album Stories—began on a soft, melancholy note that ascended into a robust back-and-forth screaming match of sorts. “Pale Green Eyes,” “It’s A Long Way from the Esophagus to the Ovaries” (such an amusing title), and “Ocean Floor” continued to delight. Hutka even hopped down from the stage to rave amongst the crowd a few times, as Tybor appealed: “I wanna see your sexy bodies moving.”

In general, The Bunny The Bear style is sort of like a dark, violent—possibly ironic?—twist to the 80’s electro-pop craze. Each song is equally energetic and catchy. The “vocals,” to me, were mostly inaudible grunts, but I suppose that suits the whole “bear”/nature concept. Still, the band’s stage presence was undoubtedly strong, and the show was a blast for all. Closing out with “So Smooth,” Hutka and Tybor brought their ‘A’ game on vocals using an intense amount of carnal power and feeling with every syllable. The Bunny The Bear are slowly climbing the music industry food chain and wreaking havoc wherever they go. I’d certainly recommend checking them out—particularly in concert—whenever you get the chance.

Frontman Nate Bergman spoke on the “State of the Union” of LIONIZE:

“Coming into 2014 is the most exciting point in our careers. We are getting ready to release a record called Jetpack Soundtrack that we’ve labored over for more than a year – and the results are better than we could have expected. We wear the Weathermaker name with a great sense of pride, and we look forward to taking the album and name all over the globe and performing for fans. There’s a level of confidence that comes with being on Clutch’s label – they are simply the best rock band on the planet and are the most supportive group to team up with. Aside from the album being fantastic, we are starting the year off with an incredible tour with headlining dates leading up to a tour with Pepper. They are great dudes and the shows will be immensely fun.”

The Maryland-based band formed in 2004, learning to play music by jamming and listening – really listening – to each other. But now, ten years later, the band has matured into a much more powerful, tight unit. LIONIZE still hammer out most songs in the studio and rehearsal room from the basic spark of an idea.Jetpack Soundtrack, their fifth album and first for the Weathermaker Music label, is no different.

WACKEN WINNERS CRIMSON SHADOWS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER U.S. DATES WITH BATTLECROSS

Epic Canadian death power metallers and 2013 International Battle for Wacken winners CRIMSON SHADOWS have announced their first ever U.S. tour dates, supporting Battlecross (Metal Blade Records) later this month with stops in Pittsburgh (1/22), Cleveland (1/23), Toronto (1/24) and Detroit (1/25). The list of dates are availableONLINE and below.

“We are really excited to be making our way south of the border, its something we have wanted to do for a while now and to be sharing the stage with our friends in Battlecross makes it that much better! We have also decided to unleash a couple brand new tracks we have wrote for our next album on this mini tour so everyone will get a taste of whats to come,” says drummer Cory Hofing.

Winners of the 2013 International Battle for Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, Crimson Shadows beat out some of the best in Canadian underground metal bands such as Vesperia, Hollow, Dissension, Adrenechrome and more. 39 independent Canadian bands competed over nine qualifying rounds, three semi-finals, and a national final that was judged by Glen Drover (Megadeth / Testament), Martin Popoff (BW&BK / HardRadio), Sarah Lutz (Metal Blade Records), Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment), Adam Sewell (Stereo Dynamite Records /Monster Voodoo Machine) and Rob Urbinati (Sacrifice).  The band went on and competed in the finals at Wacken against winning bands from over 30 countries and won the battle, along with various endorsements and other prizes.

Crimson Shadows’ first full length

‘Glory on the Battlefield’ was released in 2012, followed up by an EP “Sails of Destiny” in 2013, and are quickly gaining fans and followers all over the world with their Canadian twist on Epic Power European metal with alternating death and clean vocals. The first single from the EP, ‘Maiden’s Call’ can be heard here.

The band teamed up with Metal Blade’s up and coming thrash/melo-death act BATTLECROSS and the decision was made to take Crimson Shadows on the road for their first ever U.S. dates.

“We met the dudes in Crimson Shadows last year when their drummer offered to fill in for ours when he was unable to play a show in Canada. We kept in touch and were introduced to Crimson Shadows, and they blew us away with not only their talent and energetic live show, but an amazing work ethic and humility that we look for in a band. We think that American fans are going to love them and we’re proud and honored to introduce them to America,” says Hiran Deraniyagala of Battlecross.

Pre-sale Ticket buyers of any of the four shows will be entered to win an ESP LTD Horizon Guitar courtesy of ESP. The Toronto show will be held at El Mocambo and tickets can be purchased here.

BATTLECROSS Year end Thank You 2013, Back in Pittsburgh 1/22

As you are hopefully aware, Battlecross are headed back to Pittsburgh to The Smiling Moose on Jan. 22nd.  What a wild ride it has been for the boys from Motor City in 2013.  Just during last year Pittsburgh wasblessed to have see them last Halloween at a killer show at Altar Bar, at Mayhem in the summer, and at The Smiling Moose in the winter.  So, let’s kick off 2014 right and pack the SouthSide’s Smiling Moose again.  Listen, these guys are unreal live and they are destined to play huge venues…this will probably be the last time you have a chance to see them so up close and personal.  Then you can brag to all your friends how you saw them way back when in a small club and you can show them your pix with them after the show and blah blah blah.  Until then check out their year end thank you.

Battlecross return to Pittsburgh!!!

Time to get up close and personal with my good friends in Battlecross again!  This time our heavy metal heroes from Detroit will be hitting the intimate setting of The Smiling Moose in SouthSide on January 22, 2014 as they get warmed up for their European trek and some amazing dates with Killswitch Engage, Trivium, and Miss May I.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get up close and personal with a band that just continues to rise the ranks and are destined to become HUGE!

Neck Deep Release New Song & Music Video for “Growing Pains”/ Apr 2 Smiling Moose PGH

NECK DEEP have revealed a brand new single, ‘Growing Pains’, taken from their highly anticipated debut full length, ‘Wishful Thinking’, which will see worldwide release via HOPELESS RECORDS on January 14, 2014.

“‘Growing Pains’ is the first glance at the diversity we have tried to implement on our debut album,” says bassist Fil Thorpe-Evans; “It remains true to the classic hallmarks of our genre, but we feel it has a flair of originality and uniqueness compared to what people have heard from us before.”

The single is released today via iTunes, along with a brand new music video. Directed by upcoming UK film-maker LOVE Vis-Art for KODE Media, ‘Growing Pains’ is a nostalgic homage to youth and young love.  “The video is supposed to be a fun attempt at recreating 90’s pop culture, revolving around simple, universal themes that anyone can relate to: adolescence, love and friendship,” explains Thorpe-Evans. “We think it looks, feels and sounds different to what’s out there in the scene right now. We wanted the whole thing to be like a big flashback. Being that age is such a distinct moment in time, and it retains a certain tone in your memory banks. Whether you’re young now or whether those days are long ago, we hope this video captures that glow a little bit.”
“To me, young love, friendship and the idea of ‘the underdog’ are the three basic elements of Pop Punk,” says video creator LOVE Vis-Art. “Being born in ’88 I have a huge

affinity with 80’s and 90’s culture, so I jumped at the chance to put something out that flirted with these ideas. ‘Growing Pains’ is a coming of age anthem big enough for a teen movie, so we set out to create our own version of The Breakfast Club, fused with Saved by the Bell with a hint of Brookside to bring it back home. This is a story of love, friendship and roller discos…”

Neck Deep recently returned from a hugely successful tour supporting The Wonder Years across the UK, which culminated in a rapturously received and highly praised set at Vans Warped Tour UK in London. They also spent a fortnight in Australia on their first ever headline tour, which saw multiple shows selling out in advance and the band received like returning heroes!

The band’s next round of live activity is a set of UK & North American tour dates. The UK headline dates in January 2014 will be the band’s first homeland headliner, and will include two official release shows for ‘Wishful Thinking’, in London and their hometown of Wrexham. Shortly after these dates the band will also support their Hopeless Records labelmates WE ARE THE IN CROWD on their ‘Weird Kids’ UK run in February. The North American dates, which run from late February – April, will be the quintet’s debut full N.A outing, following a wildly successful pair of impromptu shows in Florida earlier this year during a band vacation to theme parks. Tickets for both the UK and North American headline dates have begun to sell out, so it seems that Neck Deep fever really is spreading to a worldwide pandemic!

Courage My Love recently released their latest EP, Becoming.  Recorded in Toronto with producer Chris Perry, Becoming’s 8 songs showcase the band’s rip-roaring rock. In July the band graced the cover of Canadian Musician Magazine as “the new breed of Canadian recording artist.”

The Kitchener, Ontario-based Courage My Love is led by singer/guitarist Mercedes Arn-Horn and her twin sister Phoenix (drums/vocals).  The group is rounded out by bassist Brandon Lockwood.  To mark the recording of the new EP, Courage My Love launched the online episodic video series “The (Un) Real Lives of Courage My Love” which is posted on the band’s Youtube page www.youtube.com/ilovecouragemylove. They have torn up the stages of a number of key festivals like the Vans Warped Tour, NXNE and Canadian Music Week while playing alongside the likes of Paramore, Tokyo Police Club, The Pretty Reckless and A Day To Remember.  In 2012, Alternative Press Magazine pegged Courage My Love as one of the ‘100 Bands You Need To Know’.  The group’s debut EP, For Now, was released in Canada in the Fall of 2011 and in Japan in the Summer of 2012.  The Japanese release was followed up by a live showcase in the land of the Rising Sun six months later.

The band have also produced a number of popular broadcast and viral videos (over 3.9 million views on the band’s Youtube channel) as well as the podcast series, “Homeskool Detention,” that can be heard on their website, www.ilovecouragemylove.com.

Bio:

What is courage? When you’re a young rock ‘n’ roll band—courage is throwing yourself into your music fully and completely. It’s stepping onto a stage and just given’r. It’s touring new places far from home, and opening up, scars and all, to your fans. Courage is saying what you really think. It’s being unafraid of change, of becoming who you really are.

Courage My Love is all of these things.

The Kitchener, Canada band consists of twin sisters Mercedes Arn-Horn (vocals, guitar) and Phoenix Arn-Horn (drums. vocals) with their friend Brandon Lockwood (bass).

Call them a power trio, pop-punk, alternative metal. As you wish. They grew up on it all. But while you are jumping around and banging your head with abandon, don’t miss the message: They have no appetite for destruction. They do not seek to destroy. No, Courage My Love is here to uplift, inspire.

Becoming, the band’s new EP, produced by Chris Perry in Toronto, is eight tracks bled out of Courage My Love during a period of exciting changes. “Our first EP For Now came out when we were 17,” explains Mercedes. “When you’re our age, a lot can happen in two years.” Yes, many good things. Like heavy rotation on MuchMusic/MusiquePlus, more than 3.8 million YouTube views, and being on Alternative Press Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Bands to Know in 2012. “Before we went on tour we’d never been away from home,” says the guitarist. “You meet all these new people, and you learn about yourselves. We’ve all grown a lot. That was the inspiration for Becoming.”

Opening track “Skin and Bones” captures the fear and longing of leaving something behind. “We’re too old to die young,” they sing over thunderous beats, the heart of the matter. Hard- knocking first single “You Don’t Know How” cranks it up, intense and defiant: “Find out I’m strong enough on my own now.” By the time the EP closes with the haunting ballad “Dark Wood, Dark Water,” about finding the one thing that pulls you out of the darkness, Courage My Love’s mission is clear: rock out, be happy, stay true.

For this next generation of musicians, that means truly embracing social media. With their popular DIY podcasts and viral videos, Courage My Love not only connect with fans, they reveal more of their true selves. It’s all part of what they do best. “This whole band is about being yourself,” says Phoenix. “You don’t need to play by the book to be successful. Being a girl isn’t that big of a deal in music anymore. You don’t need to have a certain look. Break the rules, stand apart.”

American Songwriter Premieres The First Single From Bend Sinister’s New album, Animals/ Pittsburgh Date March 19

“One helluva-party.”
– Phoenix New Times
“They’ve got a sound and style that is likely to catch on with millions of listeners. The more we spin this the more we dig it.”
– Babysue

Vancouver’s Bend Sinister (Daniel Moxon, Jason Dana, Matt Rhode, Joseph Blood) have partnered up with the folks at American Songwriter to premiere the first single – “Fancy Pants” – off their upcoming album, Animals. The 10-track album will be released on March 11, 2014 via File Under: Music and is the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed and American debut, 2012’sSmall Fame.  The quartet recorded Animals in San Diego at Signature Sound.  They teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Joe Marlett who turned out to be a perfect match for the band. He worked closely with them, allowing the band to continue their penchant for infectious melodies mixed with soaring guitars and a crushing B3 organ. Recording in San Diego with Marlett granted the band a renewed sense of creative focus that was channelled into their most ambitious work to date. Bend Sinister cut complex paths through vinyl jungles of classic rock, punk, metal, psychedelic, and pop to emerge victorious with Animals.
Before heading into the studio to begin working on Animals, Bend Sinister had quite a busy 2012-2013.  Their North American tour in support of Small Famebrought them to CMJ and SxSW, as well as other major markets across the U.S.  The band toured constantly behind Small Fame hitting Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Nashville and more. Radio and press became fans of the band instantly.  Bend Sinister saw adds come in across the U.S. including plays on KROQ (Los Angeles), KCXX (San Bernandino), KTCL (Denver), KXTE (Las Vegas) and more.  The band premiered the album on AOL Spinner and with a feature in Alternative Press.  Shortly after they were stopping by and performing at Daytrotter in Iowa, Playboy Radio and AXS TV in Los Angeles, Acoustic Cafe in Ann Arbor and JB TV in Chicago.  Paper Magazine premiered the band’s first video from the album for their song “Quest for Love” which featured adult film star James Deen.  The video was quickly picked up by other outlets seeing additional coverage at Death and Taxes, Alt Sounds, Culture Brats and more.
Bend Sinister plan to tour around the release of Animals and have already confirmed a handful of dates.  Stay tuned for additional dates to be announced shortly!
“Some of the most infectiously hooky songs in recent memory.”

PYREXIA: Full Album Now Streaming/Live at Smiling Moose Pittsburgh 11/5

Recorded at New York’s Pitch Black Sound, and mixed and mastered by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Kataklysm, The Red Chord, Crowbar, Municipal Waste, 3 Inches Of Blood et al) at Planet Z in Massachusetts, Feast of Iniquity serves as PYREXIA‘s most sonically mauling record to date. Featuring the dueling drum battery of Doug Bohn (Suffocation – Pierced From Within) and Dave “War Machine” Culross (Suffocation, Malevolant Creation), the record is reaping critical accolades from fans and critics alike for its groove-laden fusion of maniacal pace shifts, venomous growls and unabridged, classic New York death metal-styled brutality. Invisible Oranges notes that Feast of Iniquity, “…hits a sweet spot: slightly technical death metal…with burly vocals, lots of groove, and a production that leaves nothing to the imagination,” while Volumes Of Sin gushes, “Feast of Iniquity is definable as Album of the Year material, and it is certainly one of the greatest death metal albums of 2013….The listener will travel through demonic realms where unending drum patterns paint the landscape and the crunchy, haunting guitar work makes up the battle hymns, all the while as the vocals rage on in a violent storm of vehemence. Do not let this one pass you by…” New Noise gave the record a 4/5 review pointing out that, “Each song is heavy. Wicked heavy. Tracks are propelled by twisting, gnarly riffs atop punishing drums. The vocals are guttural growls, but certainly palatable…” Adds Eternal Terror, “Maybe as they’ve gotten older they’ve incorporated a little more mid-tempo groove to their no holds barred death riffing, but the ten songs on Feast of Iniquity still pack a potent punch to the gut. Employing dual screams and growls, the triplet low thumping ‘Thy Minion’ and creepy, dark shadows meets Slayer vibe for ‘Death Wish’ contrast nicely against pure all out blast monsters like ‘Wheels of Impurity’ and ‘Cocoon of Shame.'”

Get brutal with Feast of Iniquity, now playing at the Gauntlet, at THIS LOCATION.

Meet Courage My Love; ‘Becoming’ EP Out Now/ PGH 12/17 @Smiling Moose

Homeskool Prom Records / Warner Music Canada recording artist Courage My Love are thrilled to announce The Becoming Tour (America and Canada). The 22-date tour kicks off in their hometown of Kitchener, Ontario on November 17/2013 and wraps up in Lansing, Michigan on December 20/2013. The US leg will be the band’s first ever tour of the United States since signing with the FATA Booking Agency (The Dangerous Summer, Hyro Da Hero) in the U.S. Prior to the tour, the band will make their official US debut in New York City on October 16/2013 to perform at CIMA’s Canadian Blast Showcase at the influential CMJ Music Marathon Festival in front of fans, music industry professionals, college radio tastemakers, bloggers and press from across the country.

The series is a fictitious look at the creation of Becoming

Courage My Love have cut their teeth and built their audience with fiery live performances.

Soul Khan @ Smiling Moose Pittsburgh October 18

Based in Brooklyn, NY, Soul Khan is part of the burgeoning new school of conscious hip hop.  He has recently wrapped up his ‘Love Supreme’ EP series inspired by John Coltrane’s album of the same name.
During his solo career since 2010, he has released one free album and five EPs.  With over 9 million accummulative views across YouTube and major festival performances he has also garnered recognition from national media including MTV, BET, Fuse, Village Voice, & XXL, and The Source.

With hip-hop being a culture predicated on keeping it “real,” few artists have a reality as compelling and unique as Soul Khanʼs. Born in Los Angeles, but currently residing in Brooklyn, Khanʼs meteoric rise over the past four years has transcended being a viral sensation into one of the most buzzed about indie-rap superstars today. In an industry obsessed with catering to every short-lived trend, Khan has stayed true to himself and amassed an impressively loyal following in the process. His supporters, better known as “The Khangregation,” include 23,000 Facebook fans and 16,000 Twitter followers whoʼve helped rack up over one-million views on his YouTube channel. And they keep coming back because Khanʼs got Soul.
Soul Khanʼs never compromised his character into a caricature, allowing for a genuine perspective as multidimensional as his listenersʼ. Whether heʼs taking his audience on a journey of emoting empathy from the struggles heʼs witnessed, has them laughing along with his razor-sharp punchlines, or leading them in salute to his personal heroes (including the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, the subject of his recent Wellstone EP.), Khan plays many hands with the execution of an expert. This is why heʼs also in such high demand for collaborating with such artists as Homeboy Sandman, Sene, and Marco Polo.
With five critically acclaimed EPs and an album, 2010ʼs Soul Like Khan, that has been downloaded over 100,000 times, Khanʼs received his fair share of press. MTV, BET, Complex, URB and Forbes have all prominently featured his project, often citing his unparalleled work ethic and strong consistency, thanks in part to being a member of New York underground sensations Brown Bag All Stars. With projects that stay true to his pedigree and always deliver on his promises, Khanʼs made believers out of such hip-hop icons as DJ Premier, Large Professor and Scarface.
In a genre of uncertainty at a time when musicʼs never been more disposable, reliable artists are few and far between. When you consider heʼs as prolific and he is a perfectionist, itʼs clear that if hip-hop has at least one surefire constant. His name is Soul Khan.

Tommy & The High Pilots Soar in Pittsburgh

On Friday, August 16th, The Smiling Moose in the Southside was taken over by a band with moves that you just cannot control. That’s right! Tommy & The High Pilots took over the stage, and made the crowd go dancing wild! No – LITERALLY made the crowd move their feet, shake their bodies, and just let loose! Lead vocalist, Tommy Cantillon, stepped down – or should I say – danced down into the crowd, and got everyone around him to move along to the pop-alternative sounds of his fellow band. He had the girls swinging across the floor, and even the guys were shaking their hips! And if you thought the dancing stopped when he returned back on stage, then you thought wrong! Tommy’s legs were going crazy! Shaking his hips left then right, the crowd moved right along with him as they “danced the night away”.  Even better, Tommy was not the only member on stage having the time of his life! Of course the rest of his band was right there with him! His brother, and keyboardist, Michael Cantillon, was second in line for moving his body to the creation of his own music. Right behind those two was drummer Matt Palermo. Matt may not have moved as much – due to obvious drummer restrictions – but he sure did show excitement through the big smile he wore on his face the entire time of the performance. Last, but far from least, was bassist Steven J. Libby – who may not have moved as much, but did keep a smile on his face, and a sway to his body! For their final song of the night, The High Pilots put on an amazing performance with the song, “Out of my Head”. Tommy had the crowd still going, and even got them singing – including myself as I belted out every word that I knew! Overall, I guess one could say that the band put on an AMAZING experience. With their great crowd interaction, various special guests, and their high energy – who wouldn’t have enjoyed their performance? Good Job to Tommy & The High Pilots. Pittsburgh looks forward to having you back!

The Color Code, Rare Monk, and The Dangerous Summer just as well put on outstanding performances. Every single band to play that night did just as amazing as the next! By the end of the night, my feet were hurting from all of the jumping around I did during each performance! Much appreciation to every member in all of the bands; your hard work is very much paying off, and I look forward to what the future has to offer for you – and hopefully that future involves another visit back as well!

Vancouver’s Said The Whale Playing Smiling Moose in Pittsburgh 8/27

The Canadian indie-pop band are currently on tour and will play Pittsburgh’s Smiling Moose on August 27! They’re gearing up for the release of new album “hawaiii” (yep, with 3 i’s), out September 17 via Hidden Pony Records.
Vancouver’s Said The Whale has been on a steady upward trajectory for the past six years, as relentless touring and a prolific string of releases have led to successes including a JUNO Award in 2011 for New Group of the Year and nationally charting singles. In 2013, the tireless five-piece —which includes dual songwriters Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester, drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and bassist Nathan Shaw — will continue to break down doors by releasing its most adventurous and hook-filled batch of songs yet.

The band formed in early 2007 and, following some early EPs, released the debut-full length Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia in 2008. Said The Whale began to amass a grassroots following through frequent tours, and they scored a string of Canadian radio successes with the albums Islands Disappear (2009) and Little Mountain (2012). These albums earned attention from media outlets like Spin, BBC 6 Music, and Consequence of Sound, and the band was profiled in the nationally televised CBC documentary Winning America. Said The Whale were nominated for two more JUNO Awards in 2013 for Alternative Album of the Year and Recording Package of the Year (alongside art director Andy Dixon) for Little Mountain.

Having already released the three-song I Love You EP on June 4, the band are keeping with their inexhaustible work ethic, announcing their latest full-length album hawaiii is set for release on September 17, 2013, on Hidden Pony Records. Intentionally using a lower-case ‘h’ and ending in a trifecta of ‘i’s’ the band wanted to put some distance and distinction between the sun-filled U.S. State, so far from their Vancouver, BC home base.

The album title also mirrors the different way Said The Whale assembled this new album. Singer/songwriter Tyler Bancroft noted: “Instead of booking a solid block of time to record the entire album, we did it in short bursts over a period of six months. The time in between sessions allowed us to reflect on what we’d recorded, to tour and road-test some of the songs, and to continue writing.”

The twelve track album has already seen first single and EP namesake “I Love You” become the biggest song at radio the band has had to date in Canada and the U.S. “I Love You” is currently being played at over 30 stations coast-to-coast in the U.S. It’s achieved #1 Phones and is in POWER Rotation at the influential station KNRK in Portland as well as solid rotation at Sirius’ “Alt Nation,” Seattle’s KNDD (the End), and Live 105 in San Francisco. “I Love You” has seen unprecedented love at Canadian radio having held the #3 spot at Mediabase Alternative Rock for over 5 weeks and is currently being played on The Edge, The Peak, The Shore, Sonic, The Zone, Live 105 Halifax and more – it’s spanning the country – and the video for the track is just seeing finishing touches will be released soon.

With hawaiii, the band return to long-time collaborator Tom Dobrzanski (The Zolas, We Are The City) with band member Tyler Bancroft stepping up into the role of co-producer. The record was mixed by Gus Van Go and Werner F (Stills, Rah Rah). The new material was penned in a surge of creativity that found Bancroft and Worcester letting their guard down and following their instincts. “My songs on this album are the most vulnerable songs I’ve ever written,” notes Bancroft. “Lyrically it’s the most honest I’ve ever been.”

The signature sun-filled, hook-heavy vocal harmonies Said The Whale are known so well for, prevail over the album’s tracklisting, but alongside a notable sense of darker, serious subject matter and self-reflection. From the Ben Worcester lead vocals on album-closer “The Weight of the Season” to Bancroft’s heavy-hearted tribute to his mother and how he, as an adult, comes to grips with an aging parent, on “Helpless Son.” The up-tempo numbers abound with “Mother” and “On The Ropes” as well as the dreamy new sounds on tracks like “Resolutions.” The band, as any great band does, continues to evolve. hawaiii is the sound of a band already on the top of its game breaking free from all expectations and boldly reinventing its identity.

Survival (featuring Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy) Playing Smiling Moose August 18

Survival (featuring Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy) will be playing upstairs at the Smiling Moose on August 18. The group is currently touring in support of their self-titled debut which was released earlier this year via Thrill Jockey.  Survival channels the dark, progressive sound favored by groups like Black Sabbath, Magma and Aphrodite’s Child. After playing together for more than a decade, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Greg Smith and Jeff Bobula recruited producer Colin Marston at the Thousand Caves studio in New York to cut a record that captured the full grandeur of their complex compositions. Filled with syncopated riffs, intricate rhythms and atypical time signatures, the album serves as a thunderous showcase of the trio’s unique musical sensibilities.

328_1440
Their LP Survival is an album of dark and meditative heavy rock. Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Greg Smith, and Jeff Bobula have
been playing together for over a decade and recorded this album as Survival with Colin Marston (Krallice, Dysrhythmia) at The Thousand Caves. Syncopated riffs, intricate rhythms and atypical time signatures create dramatic and complex melodic lines that provide a bed for chant-like lyrics.  The group opperates as a collective, writing lyrics, riffs and singing with one voice. The album is a unique document that harkens back to post-hardcore, Black Sabbath, Magma,Aphrodite’s Child, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aaron Copeland, The Smashing Pumpkins, and the first wave of math rock.  The galloping “Tragedy of the Mind” opens the album, triumphantly proclaiming, “Ending begins.” On “Since Sun” and “Tragedy (Reprise)” the group also employs acoustic guitars to
create a hushed atmosphere of contemplation and reflection. The final song, “Triumph of the Good,” provides the Survival’s most cathartic moment; as the distorted, almost baroque guitars slowly ascend and get louder the group collectively sings “Forgive us” before all of the instruments line up to create a massive rhythmic assault.
Survival was born out of the ashes of band Birthday Boyz, whose 2007 tour of China was documented by Vice TV for an installment of the Music World show called “Rock Under the Red Flag.”. The songs on Survival emerged after years of retooling and rearranging, with the riffs, melodies, and song structures evolving gradually over time.
