Pittsburgh Music Mag Speaks with Amon Amarth’s Ted Lundström

With an amazing lineup of Amon Amarth, Enslaved, and Skeletonwitch it was an amazingly cold February night that quickly heated up in Millvale at Mr. Small’s.  A completely sold out night had people offering upwards of $300 a ticket to get a glimpse of pure metal being handed down in one of the most brutal lineups Pittsburgh has seen.  So brutal, this photographer’s camera did not survive the vent!  Well, at least we got an interview in with Amon Amarth’s Ted  Lundström (bass) beforehand.  Listen in as we hang with the laid back Ted and learn a lot about what is going on with the ruling Vikings of metal…

SKELETONWITCH To Release Limited Edition Serpents Unleashed LP – Proceeds To Aid Animal Shelters

SKELETONWITCH will release a hand-screened, 180-gram limited vinyl edition of their acclaimed, Billboard-charting 2013 release, Serpents Unleashed, of which 100% of the proceeds will be donated to two animal shelters in the band’s home state of Ohio — The Athens County Humane Society and Columbus’ Pets Without Parents. The members of Ohio’s most-loved heavy metal group have always been proud pet owners and are excited to raise awareness and support for two no-kill organizations in their region.

Limited to a one-time-only pressing of 100 copies, the black LP includes a hand-screened, hand-numbered jacket with exclusive artwork and a hand-screened dust sleeve. It comes with a color poster and a sticker showcasing the album’s original masterful artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Kylesa, Kvelertak), as well as a download card. Mark your calendars, as the limited-edition LPs will go on sale on a first-come, first-serve basis exclusively via http://www.skeletonwitch.com on Monday, January 20th at 1:00pm EST.

Praised for being their most potent album to date, Serpents Unleashed appeared on countless year-end “best-of” lists (Decibel, Metal Injection, etc.) due to its “relentlessly intense, in-your-face brutality” (Metal Assault). After touring North America extensively in the fall with The Black Dahlia Murder in addition to performing a select number of shows alongside Ghost B.C., SKELETONWITCH will continue to support the release, joining Amon Amarth and Enslaved on a US run that starts this Friday in Las Vegas. Soon after, the group will make their way to Australia for the first time to tour alongside Toxic Holocaust. The band’s complete tour schedule can be found below.

SKELETONWITCH: Serpents Unleashed Video

Not only did yesterday mark the official North American release of Serpents Unleashed, the fifth full-length from Midwestern blackened thrash metal conjurers, SKELETONWITCH, but the band has also chosen to premiere the music video for the album’s ferocious title track! Filmed in black and white, the video features just over two minutes of stylized, in-your-face performance footage produced and directed by Ralph Miller (Turnstyle Films) and edited by Jon Nix. Comments SKELETONWITCH guitarist Nate Garnette, “Time to double-check that snakebite kit, because the motherfuckin’ serpents have been unleashed.”

Check it out, courtesy of Noisey, at THIS LOCATION.

Hailed by many as the band’s most mature, well-executed and plainly vicious album to date, Serpents Unleashed — the follow-up to 2011’s Billboard-charting Forever Abomination full-length — was recorded with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Isis, High On Fire), features artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Kylesa, Kvelertak) and was recently commended by Terrorizer Magazine in a 9/10 review as, “a triumph of blackened thrash sculpted by a discordant classic rock/metal edge,” that, “push(es) the genre ten leaps forward.” No Clean Singing dubs Serpents Unleashed, “the most assured record in their catalog,” Lambgoat calls the record, “another great dose of blackened thrash with a hint of old-school metal energy,” Metal Observer crowns it, “…vicious, chaotic, fun, and ultimately a thrashing time for all those involved…  one of the year’s best,” while Skulls ‘N’ Bones hails Serpents Unleashed, “…a MUST HAVE for all metal fans…. not only one of the best albums of 2013, but it’s their finest record to date, and one that assures that true metal will live on for many years!”

SKELETONWITCH: “Unfit” For Disney, But Fit For A Wedding

Fresh off a short run of dates supporting Ghost B.C., Athens, Ohio-based blackened metal quintet,SKELETONWITCH, has announced a hometown release party for their forthcoming new full-length,Serpents Unleashed. The show will take place at The Union (18 W. Union St., Athens) on October 23rd, the eve of the kickoff to their extensive North American fall tour with The Black Dahlia Murder. Tickets for the event are just $10.

The Black Dahlia tour will be swiftly followed by another lap around America in early 2014 alongside Amon Amarth and Enslaved. Unfortunately for fans in Orlando however, where the tour stops onJanuary 27th, SKELETONWITCH will not be allowed to perform at the local House of Blues, as the group has joined the likes of Exodus, Machine Head and others deemed “unfit to be associated with” Disney, on whose property the venue is located.

Although SKELETONWITCH might be unwelcomed at the Magic Kingdom, a California couple has asked the band to make their dreams come true. During SKELETONWITCH‘s performance in Fresno on November 15th, longtime fans Travis Bartlett and Lanae Forrest will get married on stage — making local venue Strummer’s their own happiest place on Earth. Says groom-to-be Bartlett, “Lanae and I are taken aback and beyond elated that SKELETONWITCH are willing to be a part of the most important day of our lives. There really aren’t words to show our appreciation for the band being with us as we begin our lives together.”

Commemorating the group’s 10-year anniversary, Serpents Unleashed — recorded earlier this year with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Isis, High on Fire), and featuring artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Kylesa, Kvelertak) – will be unleashed in North America on October 29th, in Australia, Germany, Austria and Switzerland on October 25th and in the UK and the rest of Europe on October 28th. Serpents Unleashed is available for preorder at SKELETONWITCH.com in CD, LP, cassette, digital download and limited edition 7-inch collector’s box formats. In addition, you can now pre-order the album digitally at iTunes and BandCamp and receive an instant download of “I Am Of Death (Hell Has Arrived).”

See for yourself whether SKELETONWITCH are “unfit to be associated with” at one of their dates below.

SKELETONWITCH Announces Regional Meet & Greet/Shopping Spree Contests

As Midwestern metal heathens, SKELETONWITCH, prepare to hit the road with Ghost B.C. and The Black Dahlia Murder next week, the band is excited to announce a special contest for their fans: Supporters in three markets along the tour trail will have a chance to hang out with the band at a local record store while listening to their new album Serpents Unleashed. Additionally, anyone who purchases or preorders the album during these events will receive a scratch-off ticket, one of which per location will reveal a snake and entitle the holder to win a $100 shopping spree on the spot! Specific dates, times and locations are listed below:

Meet & Greet/Shopping Spree Contest Locations:

10/05/2013 6:00pm @ Exclusive Co. – Greenfield, WI

11/15/2013 6:00pm @ Rasputin – Fresno, CA

11/22/2013 6:00pm @ Vintage Vinyl – St. Louis, MO

Recorded with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Isis, High On Fire) earlier this year, and featuring artwork by John Baizley (Kvelertak, Kylesa, Baroness), Serpents Unleashed – the follow-up to 2011’s Billboard-charting Forever Abomination, and a record Decibel has hailed as the band’s “best effort to date” – sees SKELETONWITCH at their most venomous. Another blistering helping of two-and-a-half minute blackened blasts, with Serpents Unleashed SKELETONWITCH shows off a few new tricks – note the Scandinavian doom-vibe in the opening of “Unending, Everliving” and the devil’s swing of “This Evil Embrace” – but do so without compromising the frosty/fiery/abominable metal spirit or blue-collar humility that has endeared them to so many over the past decade. Ultimately, it’s both a fitting testament to what they’ve accomplished to date, and an exciting nod toward what the future has in store.

In celebration of its imminent release, today the band reveals the latest chapter in their behind-the-scenes video series documenting the making of the album, this time focusing on their time spent in “Witch Country.” Check it out at Lambgoat.com HERE.

Next week, SKELETONWITCH will initiate the massive Serpents Unleashed touring cycle by playing a handful of shows with Swedish occult rockers Ghost B.C., after which they’ll embark on a full North American takeover with The Black Dahlia Murder. The band will kick off 2014 with a stateside journey alongside Amon Amarth and Enslaved. A full list of the group’s upcoming live actions are included below.

SKELETONWITCH Marks 10-Year Anniversary With Video Premiere At Bloody-Disgusting

Ten years ago today, brothers Nate and Chance Garnette joined forces with Scott Hedrick in a new band they opted to call SKELETONWITCH. A decade later, the blackened metal powerhouse commemorates their anniversary with the world premiere of the slasher/classic horror-themed music video for “I Am Of Death (Hell Has Arrived),” a new song from the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio offering, Serpents Unleashed.
Comments Nate, “It’s never a bad time when you combine 100 beers, several bloody sheep skulls, murder in the woods and five headbanging maniacs. It’s an even better time when the end result is a killer classic/slasher video. This time we went with the ‘even better time.’ Enjoy!”

Get your slasher fix on with “I Am Of Death (Hell Has Arrived),” now playing at Bloody-Disgusting HERE.

Since signing with Prosthetic seven years ago, a new SKELETONWITCH album has materialized like clockwork every other October. First, there was the group’s sophomore breakthrough, Beyond The Permafrost. Produced by late GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot and featuring iconic artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Kylesa, Kvelertak), the album — and subsequent tours with the likes of Danzig, Dimmu Borgir and Amon Amarth — told the world what the rest of Ohio already knew: That SKELETONWITCH was a metal force with which to be reckoned. That album’s “Soul Thrashing Black Sorcery” would eventually be featured in the video game Brutal Legend, placing the band in excellent company with digitized versions of Rob Halford, Ozzy and Lemmy.
Then came 2009’s Breathing The Fire, produced by the legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, High On Fire, 3 Inches of Blood). Supported by tours with Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom and Ozzfest, the album — the band’s first featuring bassist Evan Linger, and also their first to crack the Billboard Top 200 — caught the attention of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, who invited the group to film a zombie-themed video for the song “Bringers of Death” that the band members still haven’t stopped hearing about.
In 2011, Forever Abomination — produced by Grammy-winner Matt Hyde (Slayer, Deftones) — saw the arrival of drummer Dustin Boltjes (ex-Demiricous), as well as a return visit to the Billboard Top 200. On the road, the group toured alongside Arch Enemy, Kvelertak, The Black Dahlia Murder and Nile before embarking on their most ambitious trek to date: A 63-shows-in-65-days test of endurance they passed with flying colors.
2013 brings us to Serpents Unleashed, the group’s fifth and latest release. Recorded with Kurt Ballou (Converge, High On Fire, Isis) in Salem, Massachusetts (insert bad “witch” joke here), the album is another blistering helping of two-and-a-half minute blasts of blackened metal amalgamation. This time around, the band also shows off a few new tricks — note the Scandinavian doom-vibe in the opening of “Unending, Everliving” and the devil’s swing of “This Evil Embrace” — but does so without compromising the frosty/fiery/abominable metal spirit or blue-collar humility that has endeared them to so many over the past decade. Ultimately, it’s both a fitting testament to what they’ve accomplished to date, and an exciting nod toward what the future has in store.

SKELETONWITCH Announces Tour With The Black Dahlia Murder

In support of their forthcoming new full-length, Serpents Unleashed, Ohio blackened metal quintet SKELETONWITCH will join The Black Dahlia Murder on a North American trek this Fall. The journey will commence in late October following a short run of dates alongside Ghost B.C. Additional support will be provided by Fallujah as well as Noisem and Wolvhammer on select dates.

Comments vocalist Chance Garnette: “We can’t think of a better way to release the venom that isSerpents Unleashed than by getting back on the road with our buds in The Black Dahlia Murder. It’s going to be a killer tour that you won’t want to miss! Don’t sleep on this one — come out and get your face melted!”

Scheduled for release in North America on October 29 (October 28 EU/UK, October 25 G/A/S) via Prosthetic Records, SKELETONWITCH‘s Serpents Unleashed was recorded earlier this year with Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio (Converge, Trap Them, Kvelertak) and features eleven tracks of abominable, frosty fire. New tune, “Burned From Bone,” premiered yesterday on SiriusXM’s “Liquid Metal with Jose” and is now available as a free download by texting SERPENTS to 24587 (standard data and message rates may apply). Behind-the-scenes footage of the band tracking the song in the studio can be seen at THIS LOCATION.
