Eternal Lips Announce New EP, Single Feat. Sharon Van Etten

Listen to “Dream Hesitate” Feat. Sharon Van Etten

ETERNAL LIPS is the outsider pop project of Brooklyn musician and artist Grey Gersten. Conceived as an imaginary band, ETERNAL LIPS explores the conventions and mystical aspects of pop music in a totally honest and non-ironic way. Listen to the track “Dream Hesitate” via The AV Club HERE.

Having worked with the likes of John ZornMichael Hurley and TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone (who guests on EP’s track “Voice”), Gersten brings his years of experience working in and around NYC’s experimental rock scene to the process of making pop music, resulting in music that is not only vibrant but wonderfully accessible as well. The self-titled EP will be released February 25 via New Mirage Records.

Look out for an upcoming Eternal Lips installation at Museum in New York City

“Ms. Olsen understands the power of holding back, and feeding out extravagance in small portions. People stopped buying drinks; the bartenders put their elbows on the counter, engrossed. It was remarkable. . . Ms. Olsen has found her sound – her voice, alone and untreated and slow, conjoined with the specific resonance of her guitar – and she’s able to replicate a private discovery in front of a crowd. That’s a lot.” – The New York Times

“11 tracks of rough-hewn folk, shimmering and ribboned with dirt-packed veins, sung by a voice that curls and dips and dissolves like a black smoke plume.”

– Pitchfork [2012 Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention]

“Songs on [Half Way Home] had much in common with the passions and range of a singer like Roy Orbison. The common thread between that powerful singer-songwriter and hit-maker from Texas and this more delicate Midwesterner is that they both write from the heart and sing with a range that may make you stop what you’re doing and drop your jaw a bit.” – NPR Music

“On ‘Half Way Home,’ she waltzes through 11 gems that highlight a minimalist guitarist with a gentle touch and a voice whose range is as wide as it is controlled.” – Los Angeles Times

“It’s not just Angel Olsen’s range that makes her voice so unforgettable; it’s the surprise turns she’s learned to produce by manipulating it.” – The FADER

Pickathon 2013 Announce Dates and Lineup! Aug. 2 – Aug. 4 In Happy Valley, OR

Pickathon is turning 15 and, like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better! Happening Friday, August 2nd – Sunday, August 4th at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, OR (a mere 15 minutes from downtown Portland), this year promises to be the best ever. Since day one, the idea behind Pickathon has always been pretty simple: what does it take to be the best weekend festival of the year for music lovers? This question has driven Pickathon to highly refine an experience that has few peers.

Innovation has always been at the center of this process and through the years many important elements have come together; collaborating widely on yearly diverse lineups that are built on the idea of great music being the sole criteria; refining six unique performance venues designed to create juxtaposing alternate realities; trusting important decisions can be discussed and made with our online community such as maintaining a low crowd density; becoming the only large music festival to eliminate plastic and minimize single use items; recruiting the finest food and drink purveyors in the land; focusing constantly on eliminating “normal” festival hassles, and the list goes on.

This year’s lineup is truly a high point in Pickathon’s existence. We are pleased to welcome Feist, Andrew Bird, Divine Fits, Sharon Van Etten, The Devil Makes Three, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Vieux Farka Touré, Howe Gelb, Lady, Shabazz Palaces, The Felice Brothers, Tift Merritt, Wayne Hancock, Marco Benevento, The Lone Bellow, Dale Watson, Foxygen, Parquet Courts, Breathe Owl Breathe, White Fence, Yellowbirds, and so much more! The full lineup is below (though there might be a few surprises along the way, so stay tuned). Also, remember, each band is at the festival for two days, playing two sets on two of six very unique stages! Where else can you see a band play an outdoor festival set in front of thousands and the next night, witness the same band in a sweaty and rollicking rock club environment? Only at Pickathon!

Pickathon founder Zale Schoenborn spoke with SPIN Magazine, which premiered the lineup this morning along with the interview. Read more about what makes year 15 special on SPIN.com.

Sharon Van Etten to Support Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds on North American Tour

The big news keeps coming with Sharon Van Etten. After completing her final U.S. tour of 2012 in support of Tramp, which culminated with a very special Town Hall show featuring guests including Thurston Moore, Aaron Dessner, Jenn Wasner, Brad Cook, and Peter Silbermann, and releasing the deluxe edition of Tramp a couple of weeks back, Sharon is honored to announce she’ll be touring this spring with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds! The North American tour kicks off in Dallas on March 14th and currently runs through April 3rd in Denver. Tickets go on sale on Thu. Dec. 6th at 10am local time. Dates are below. Also, on Wed. Jan. 16th, Sharon will join John Cale at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for Life Along the Borderline: A Tribute to Nico.

Additionally, fans of Boardwalk Empire, perhaps you heard Ms. Van Etten’s stunning rendition of Irving Berlin’s “What’ll I Do,” on last night’s season finale? We won’t share any spoilers, but she performed it with a full orchestra a few months ago and it played during an epic scene with Boardwalk favorite, Richard Harrow.

In the meantime, keep an eye out as Tramp is landing on a slew of year-end lists. It’s only Dec. 3rd and already Uncut, MOJO, NME, The Fly, and Paste have recognized it as one of the year’s best. Much more is sure to come!

Click Here To Listen To “(This Is Why) I Don’t Wear White” On Pitchfork

On November 20, Frenchkiss Records will release “(This is Why) I Can’t Wear White” b/w “15,” the third in a series of 7-inch singles from Flock of Dimes, the solo project of Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner. Limited to 1,000 copies, each 7-inch includes a download coupon for both tracks. The album will be released digitally as well.

Jenn launched Flock of Dimes in 2011 as a way to explore more experimental recording and songwriting outside of the burgeoning success of Wye Oak. A tour opening for Sharon Van Etten followed, and a debut 7-inch, “Prison Bride” b/w “I Can’t Tell You Why (screwed mix),” was released by Baltimore-based Friends Records in April of 2011. A 2nd 7-inch was released this past September through Merge Records. This 3rd release was produced by Mickey Free once again and features beautiful cover art by Beth Hoeckel.

NIGHTLANDS’ DAVE HARTLEY ANNOUNCES SOPHOMORE ALBUM

The son of a genetic engineer, Dave Hartley has eschewed his father’s profession but decidedly inherited his analytical proclivities and love of “the lab.” As Nightlands, Hartley is a scientist trying to create and understand art through analytical process. Here, with sophomore album Oak Island, his follow up to 2010’s superb Forget the Mantra, new questions are explored: what happens when the human voice is layered exponentially? Is the sum more man, or more melancholy machine? In seeking these answers, Nightlands takes us on a spirit quest through lush forests down into The Uncanny Valley. Each distorted, silver-voiced melody is wrapped in the sounds of 70s AM gold – plucked acoustic guitars, trumpets, dulcimers and hand percussion. In using these pop touchstones, the songs become something close to memories, the faded feelings that tide in and out of you when conjuring the past. To this end, virtually every chord played on Oak Island is a major-7th, the most nostalgic harmonic grouping. Seals & Croft produced by mid-70s beetle-voiced Brian Eno. Crosby, HAL and Nash.

Beneath the analytics and technical experimentation lie 10 pop songs about sadness and love; this silvery robot has learned what it means to be human and paid a great cost. The elegant, lunar bossa-nova of album standout “So Far So Long,” with its distant trumpeted satellite signals, offers a slow, confident lilting and wilting, as Hartley considers traversing space and time.

Hartley is a prolific sideman in many notable bands in and around Philadelphia and the extraordinary bassist of The War on Drugs (he played bass on Sharon Van Etten’s epic, in Sondre Lerche’s touring band, and sings in The Silver Ages). Listeners expecting a simple side project, however, will be surprised by the boldness and scope of his vision–Nightlands is the Chuck Close painting to the The War on Drugs’ De Kooning.

Nightlands tour dates:
Thu. Oct. 25 – Philadelphia, PA @ PhilaMOCA
Thu. Nov. 29 – Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands
Tue. Dec. 4 – Philadelphia, PA @ PhilaMOCA (performing original score to “2001: A Space Odyssey”)

Sharon Van Etten Shares “Magic Chords” Video & Plays Later…With Jools Holland

Since we last announced any Sharon Van Etten news, Ms. SVE has been a busy lady touring the U.S. and Europe, shooting her second music video for Tramp, performing on the acclaimed Later…With Jools Holland, laying down vocals for a range of exciting projects, including collaborating with J Mascis on a John Denver tribute and Rufus Wainwright for a holiday compilation (news on this and more will revealed in the coming weeks), ramping up for her final North American tour of 2012 (including arranging a slew of special guests for the Town Hall show in NYC on Nov. 15) and planning her debut in Australia.

If you’ve seen Sharon in concert over the last seven months, you’ll have noticed the live performance of one of Tramp’s standout tracks, “Magic Chords,” as particularly captivating. Rick Alverson (director of the controversial and provocative “The Comedy” which was accepted In Competition at the Sundance Film Festival this year) presents this song in an entirely different light with his video for this song. Shot on location just outside of Bloomington, IN last month and featuring Sharon as a disturbingly stoic puritan figure with visions of naked bodies in piles, the “Magic Chords” video is surprisingly meditative for its eye-catching stills. It premiered this morning via Pitchfork and you can watch it below.

Fresh off yesterday’s Later…With Jools Holland performance and a European tour, Sharon will head out on her final US tour of 2012 in support of Tramp.
