The Kings of Quarantine came together in 2020 after a discussion between Jason and Bill about possibly collaborating on a cover song. “She Watch Channel Zero” is the third installment in a series of covers that will be released throughout 2021 in an effort to bring some joy and entertainment to music lovers worldwide. “We hope to not only put a smile on people’s faces, but also help the touring staff that have been severely affected by the pandemic”, says Jason Rockman. One hundred percent of the profits will be donated to Roadie Relief, a fundraising effort to aid qualifying Roadies who have submitted an application for financial help.

Almost everyone you know has seen a concert that has moved them. Those productions can take over 100+ traveling crew members to set up by the time doors open.

Before and during the show they sweat and hustle to get everything ready. After the show they spend more hours erasing evidence that they were ever there at all. Many of these key players work an average of 20 hour days, then move on to the next city to make it happen all over again.

Many of these crew members, “roadies,” have been doing this as a career for decades. Some of these roadies, while experts in this field, have never had any other job experience. Since the world pandemic, well over a hundred thousand of these people are left with no income and no financial assistance.

There are no concerts or live events for the foreseeable future. At the beginning of 2020, job opportunity ceased to exist and 2021 remains uncertain. Many are unable to claim unemployment as their expert level trade skills are not recognized and they do not qualify. This on-going problem is leaving 100s of roadies without a secure livelihood.

The government has fallen short. Contacting congressmen and women, senators, and governors to raise the issue has been met with no resolution. Their replies are a formal brush-off and roadies are left hitting a dead end.

The goal with this gofundme is to offer some relief to some of the dedicated people in the roadie community. Just like you, they have families, mortgages, car payments, and day care. Commonly these workers lean on their savings between tour cycles, but those funds have run thin or run out. Please donate if you can, every little helps.

Book Review: “One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager”

Let me start by saying that if I had this book in my possession twenty-five years ago I would definitely be in a different place right now in my life and I certainly could have been a much better asset for the bands I managed.  Not that I have any regrets, but instead of watching “Almost Famous” and just wondering how one goes about getting on the road with the band, this book actually gives you a step by step guide.  Mark Workman lays out such a comprehensive strategy to becoming a working tour manager that if one has the will, Workman provides the way.

Mark Workman has been a successful tour manager and lighting designer in the music business since 1983. His list of past and present clients includes Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Machine Head, Danzig, Mudvayne, Dio, Queens of the Stone Age, Devildriver, Soulfly, Sepultura and many others.

As a lighting designer, Mark Workman has designed high-impact lighting performances for many music tours, including the infamous Clash of the Titans (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice In Chains, & Suicidal Tendencies) in 1990/1991 and American Carnage 2010 (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax & Testament), as well as for many music videos and live DVDs such as Machine Head’sElegies DVD filmed at Brixton Academy in London, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace Live DVD shot at the Hollywood Palladium, and Testament’s Dark Roots of Thrash Live DVD shot at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY.

“One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager” starts of  with a very strong endorsement by Alex Skolnick of Testament, of which Mark Workman was the lighting director then later manager.  These are the topics that the book explores:

Part 1 tells you how I got started as a tour manager and why I wrote this book.
Part 2 teaches you how to organize a concert tour and:
create a complete and accurate tour budget;
hire the best road crew;
lease the right tour bus and safest driver;
book hotels and air travel the right way;
create a proper backstage pass system and where to get it made;
deal with foreign artist tax for your band;
apply for overseas visas and work permits for your entourage;
create a tour book and the vital information it should contain;
coordinate trucking and air cargo;
Introduction
xiii
hire sound and lighting systems for your tour;
understand tour riders and contracts;
prepare ATA carnets and equipment manifests;
get backdrops, scrims and stage sets made;
prepare your tour accounting and a lot more.
Part 3 shows you how to get organized and properly advance each show and:
what you should know about stage plots and input charts;
preparing your pre-advance package;
making a proper advance sheet;
how to advance each show;
advancing your cash requirements and much more.
Part 4 guides you through an entire show day and shows you:
what it takes to be a tour manager running a music tour;
the mechanics of how to do press, meet-and-greets, and in-stores;
the proper way to do your guest list each day;
the right way to handle venue security;
how to do your daily tour accounting correctly;
how to do your show settlement each night;
important information about merchandising, foreign currencies, and more.
Part 5 shows you how to:
promote yourself so you can build your successful career;
find your first job as a tour manager;
and the road hazards to avoid.

That list speaks volumes, but the content definitely backs it up.  Add to that Workman’s writing style that is very smooth, humorous at times, and easy to understand, and you have one hell of a how to guide.  The promise of a series of these books is very enticing and long overdue.  It would not be surprising to see Berklee School of Music or The Musicians Institute making this book, or eventually the series, part of their curriculum…it’s that good.

If you want to get into the music business, are in the music business already, or are like me, and just fascinated with the music business, you will find this to be a treasured find.

Mark Workman is also a former boxing writer whose feature articles have appeared on BoxingScene and Fox Sports.

Mixhell Premieres “The Way” Video On Noisey / Vice

“The ‘Spaces’ album and accompanying live shows are sure to elevate Mixhell into the premiere league of electronic acts.” – DJ Mag

Mixhell, an electronic collaboration between former Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera and DJ wife Laima Leyton, are releasing their highly anticipated debut album June 11th on Last Gang Records(Crystal Castles, Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT) in liaison with Boysnoize Records.

Their first single, Exit Wound, featuring vocals from Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, was released to rave reviews, being coined as a subtle but sexy track perfected by the live percussion performed by Cavalera, resulting in a tightly coiled, urgent masterpiece. DJ Mag called the track a rock and rave delight with sleazy vocals, squirrelling electronics and power-funk drums. The music video for the single premiered on Noisey, and was directed by Brazilian phenom Thiago Zanato.

The album, mixed by Gui Boratto, blends old and new, taking the best elements of both dance, electronica and rock to create a fresh and exciting sound that’s entirely Mixhell’s.  Their live performances combine live percussion and dance fusion to create an incredibly engaging, wild and exciting show. In addition, they’ve enlisted the help of constant studio collaborator Max Blum, who will add bass guitar to their already unique and intricate sets. With a few dates lined up this summer, including the legendary Glastonbury Music Festival, and a full fledged tour in the works, it doesn’t look like Mixhell shows any signs of slowing down.

Last Gang Entertainment is a recording, management and publishing company founded in 2003 with offices in Los Angeles, London and Toronto.  In addition to launching Metric, Death From Above 1979, MSTRKRFT and Crystal Castles, the label has combined successfully with LIGHTS, Chromeo, The New Pornographers, K-OS, Boys Noize and Tiga on varied licensing deals.  The distributed division (Last Gang Labels) has partnered with a variety of artist and label clients, including Nightbox, Trouble Andrew and boutique electronic label Turbo Recordings.

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS: New Quote Snippets from Kerry King and Philip Anselmo

The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists, compiled by Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is the ultimate look at the world of heavy metal via the ease and convenience of a list. No stone is left unturned here, and I mean no stone. If you think you have a list about metal that isn’t in this book, chances are you’re wrong. Both Jenkins and Abrams have exhaustively researched and brainstormed Merciless and delivered a look at their beloved genre that is informative and fun.”– Iann Robinson, CraveOnline.com

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS, written by NYC music scene veterans Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is set to be released on April 9, 2013. Touted as being “the most opinionated compendium ever written concerning Heavy Metal”, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is comprised of 208 jam-packed pages representing all that is glorious across the world of Heavy Metal. The book features dozens of never-before-seen photographs from iconic East Coast photographer Frank White.

The foreword for THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS comes from one of the most respected names in the genre, Slayer guitarist extraordinaire Kerry King, with a candid and passionate afterword from Pantera/Down frontman Philip Anselmo.

“This book will appeal to metalheads because it’s what they love. They’ll get to laugh at the industry and at themselves. Any information is good information, and metal kids want it.” –Kerry King (Slayer)

“I am an unabashed heavy metal fan, and I know as well as anyone, that metal fans can be an extremely loyal lot. But we are a very critical lot too. With each new movement, a new, defiant, outspoken, and sovereign audience is born. Music is older than all of us, so its history is ours to writhe in and absorb.” – Philip Anselmo (Pantera/Down)

There are numerous other contributions from key metal luminaries and industry personnel like:

Scott Ian (Anthrax)

Gary Holt (Exodus)

Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly)

Katon W. DePena (Hirax)

John Gallagher (Raven)

Danny Lilker (Nuclear Assault/SOD)

Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show)

Jon & Marsha Zazula (Megaforce Records)

Brian Slagel (Metal Blade Records)

Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica Producer)

ILL BILL (Heavy Metal Kings/La Coka Nostra)

MC Serch (3rd Bass)

Richard Christy (Charred Walls of the Damned/The Howard Stern Show)

Monte Conner (Roadrunner Records/Nuclear Blast Records)

Borivoj Krgin (Blabbermouth.net)

Shaun Glass (Soil/Dirge Within)

Betsy Weiss (Bitch)

Presented in the form of dozens of factual, random and often outrageous lists, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS dares to call many out for being the worst instead of being the best. It points out the triumphs, as well as the miserable failures concerning metal, from a diehard fan’s point-of-view.

TMBML leaves no stone unturned, often blurring the lines separating fact and hilarity. You want to know about album covers that feature goats on them? What Motorhead icon Lemmy’s warts might tell you if they could speak? The achievements Iron Maiden would never have reached had their original vocalist Paul Dianno remained in the band? Well then, this book is for you.

MELDRUM vocalist Michele Madden has this to say about the single ”A warning to the wanna be’s not to mix their ambition with their blinding lack of ability…just sayin”.

MELDRUM’s first two singles ”A TOAST TO ROMANCE” and ”BLACKENED BLUE” are out now on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/a-toast-to-romance-single/id549289572). ”PAID” is streaming now at: http://soundcloud.com/meldrummusic/03-paid MICHELLE MELDRUM passed away at the age of 39 in May 2008. “LIFER” stands as a proud tribute to MICHELLE and her lifetime commitment to creating and performing music. MICHELLE wrote the material for the album with drummer GENE HOGLAN (Testament, Death, Dark Angel, Dethklok), along with new members bassist/guitarist LAURA CHRISTINE (Warface) and vocalist MICHELE MADDEN (Tourette’s).

MICHELLE’S untimely demise before any of her guitar tracks for “Lifer” were able to be laid down led the three remaining members to come together in tribute to her, to honour Michelle’s vision of the album, with Laura Christine playing the majority of the rhythm and bass guitars, as well as all the leads. Partial proceeds from the album will go to MICHELLE’S son Jake Thomas who she left behind when she passed.

MELDRUM has toured worldwide with Lemmy Kilmister’s Motorhead, Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society, Sepultura, Danzig, Nashville Pussy, as well as sharing the stage with many more. Touting a combination of mammoth vocal styles along with aggressively melodic vocals, mind bending guitar riffs and a rhythm section that creates fiercely bombastic grooves, this is what gives MELDRUM their unique, cutting edge sound.

Australia’s Synthetic Breed Offer Unique Industrial Metal Experience

Synthetic Breeds bio tells of their “Crushing riffs, pounding polyrhythms and a superior technicality (…) combined with both explosive and dark movements of musical excellence to form a unique brand of Industrial Djent”.
Having just previewed the new material for ROGUE RECORDS AMERICA,‘Zero Degrees Freedom’ delivers on the description. ‘Zero Degrees Freedom’ contains re-workings of fan-favourites along with the brand new single of the same name.
With a bit of a band personnel changeover, Synthetic Breed has phoenixed into a unique brand of metal and what should be a big breakout for the foursome.

With such high-powered tunes as ‘Afflictions Of Advancement’, ‘Convergence’, and ‘Dimension Zero’ the band are reminiscent of a mixture of heavy electronica, thrash metal, hardcore metal, opera, and grindcore with their tribal drumbeats and immediate head banging rhythms. The vocals of MARES REFALAEDA are brutal and soothing depending on the swing of emotion set by the masterful instrumentation. Her range is unusual and fitting for an outfit that has used their history as an advantage of learning and becoming a tight unit. It seems that the songwriting and musicianship of VINCENT ZYLSTRA (GUITARS, PROGRAMMING, SEQUENCING) and DANIEL LUTTICK (DRUMS) and LUKE THIEL (BASS) have been influenced by the likes of Evanescence, Sepultura, Lamb of God, Ministry, and even Rush.

SYNTHETIC BREED have had a long development period beginning when they started playing live in 2002. By late 2003 their debut self-titled EP was released. The band continued to write and perform, molding their unique style and in early 2005 released their second EP, ‘Fractured’. In 2006, they recorded and released their first full-length album, ‘Catatonic’, which was received with worldwide critical acclaim. 2009 saw the recording and release of their second feature album, entitled ‘Perpetual Motion Machine’, once again released to worldwide critical acclaim. While the prior EP’s hinted at the musicality and progressive tendencies of SYNTHETIC BREED, their full length releases showcase their unique and individual style and sound in a spectacularly authoritative manner. The band is currently touring Australia and will make an appearance at Cologne’s EUROBLAST metal festival headlined by Scar Symmetry in October 2012. With all the festivals out and about we can hope to see them in the States in the near future.

Check out their songs at http://www.myspace.com/synbreed
and this video of them performing ‘Convergence” here
