PETE RG performing in Pittsburgh 6/13 @MrSmalls

PETE RG, an American singer/songwriter/producer from Los Angeles, CA. The name, RG, is taken from his childhood moniker, Argy, an abbreviation of his lengthy, Greek last name, Argyropoulos. He’s hitting the road for a U.S. headlining solo tour in support of his third TENDER SOULS album along with his band: Brina Kabler (keyboards, vocals), Adam Kury (bass), Scotty Kormos (drums) and Kevin Haaland (lead guitar).

He lands in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, June 13 at The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls.

Born in Los Angeles to Greek immigrants, PETE RG grew up in a musical household. As working musicians, his parents inspired him to learn a variety of instruments and start playing band gigs while in college. Beginning in 1998 and up into 2007, he was the principal songwriter and lead singer with the popular indie band, Last December.

During that time he also laid the foundation for his solo career, with years of live shows that most recently included a 25 show, Spring 2016 U.S. tour with Candlebox. In its review of one club date, PancakesAndWhiskey.com pretty much summarized all that PETE RG offers to his audiences: “high-quality rock wth honest and engaging lyrics, a hammering backbeat plus gorgeous harmonies.”

His rich baritone voice became the center of a sound that has reached fruition on his full-length release, TENDER SOULS, which was released September 23, 2016 on his own 4L Entertainment label. Spacelab.tv spoke for many in confirming that he “doesn’t have to rely on gimmicks to make you feel moved — just good old-fashioned talent and personality.”

“As a songwriter, I’m always trying to express myself as best I can, lyrically and musically,” RG says. “On TENDER SOULS I feel I was able to do that without cutting corners or falling back into ambiguity. It’s a really good picture of where I’m at, with a lot of experience under my belt but also a lot of optimism.”

“Tender Souls” lyric video:

PETE RG credits Brina Kabler for helping him raise the bar on TENDER SOULS and on the road. “She’s my engineer, co-producer, mixer, keyboardist — and my fiancée,” he notes. “Whether onstage or in sessions, we’ve established a great give-and-take, where we learn from each other. We’re very much on the same level in terms of taste and inspiration. She helps me focus on what I do best. Brina is a huge part of everything I do.”

Other rave reviews of TENDER SOULS include:

The warmth of a troubadour brought up on the traveling spirit songs of The Boss, and other canonical idols brings about a spark that rests in a kind of a warm subtle glow with a brightness to entrance the glass windows of a lantern.” – ImposeMagazine.com

His soulful baritone delivers the catchy, pop melody fleshed out with understated, female harmonies. The track is driven by a propulsive, uplifting interplay of drums and guitar, which carries a message of hope.” – ElmoreMagazine.com

Pete RG delivers energetic, yearning rock based around ringing guitars and shimmering textures.” – AllMusic.com

“Pete RG‘s post-rock sound packs enough power for him to be considered an arena rock contender while still remaining smooth and sophisticated.” Diffuser.fm

Speckled with hints of Neil Diamond, Leonard Cohen and Matt Berninger, RG is blessed to have a voice so unique, so enchanting and so captivating. It is that voice and its intrinsic charisma that will carry RG forward in the months and years to come.” – AbsolutePunk.com

San Diego, CA – May 12, 2017 – CHON will be kicking off a headlining North American tour through 24 cities, with support from Tera Melos, Covet, and Little Tybee. For more information on their upcoming full-length album and tour, please visit: http://www.chonofficial.co
CHON recently announced the release of their second full-length album Homey on June 16th via Sumerian Records. Underneath a canopy of electronic-tinged soundscapes and tapestries of lush guitar mastery, you can practically feel the Southern California coast come to life on Homey.
Following the success of 2015’s Grow and worldwide touring with everyone from Periphery and Animals As Leaders to Circa Survive, the instrumental trio-brothers Mario [guitar] and Nathan Camarena [drums] and Erick Hansel [guitar]-returned home to San Diego in the summer of 2016 to begin work on what would become their next musical offering. For the very first time, they rented a rehearsal space a stone’s throw from the ocean, and the beachside locale’s influence courses through 12 virtuosic and vibrant new musical movements.
Those vibes transformed CHON into a vital force since their emergence in 2008. Grow marked their first entry on the Billboard Top 200, landing prominently in the Top 150. They impressively average 144K Spotify streams monthly with over 10 tracks cracking the 1-million mark and fan favorites such as “Story,” “Bubble Dream,” and “Can’t Wait” surpassing 2 million-a remarkable feat for a chiefly instrumental act. Homey sees them expand once more, incorporating a slew of future bass influences with collaborators such as Go Yama on “Berry Streets” and Lophile on “Nayhoo”, which also features a vocal cameo from Masego.
With excitement towards the upcoming release, CHON explains, “We’re super proud to show everyone our new album “Homey”. This time we tried a lot of new things out that we’ve always wanted to do, one of which being the chance to collab with a bunch of our favorite artists of all time, so this is a really special album to us. The loose concept behind the name “Homey” comes from the music being inspired by where we live in Southern California. A lot of magical moments went into the creation of this thing, and we hope you feel ’em”
CHON is set to release their upcoming full-length album Homey on June 16, 2017. For more information, please visit: http://www.chonofficial.com/.

Canvasback Music/Atlantic recording group Frightened Rabbit have unveiled details for their fall U.S. tour with Broken Social Scene. *****

Frightened Rabbit’s fifth studio album “PAINTING OF A PANIC ATTACK” – produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner – enjoyed a Top 25 debut on the Soundscan/Billboard 200 chart upon its release last year, peaking at #2 on iTunes’ Alternative chart and #8 overall. The album’s lead single “Get Out” scored Top 10 success on FMQB’s Triple A chart, and garnered the band a pair of national television appearance, performing on CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “Late Late Show with James Corden.”   The song’s emotionally provocative, companion video made its premiere on NPR’s All Songs Considered and received a raft of praise from influential sites, including Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Consequence of Sound, among others. The video – beautifully shot in Kiev –can be viewed at the band’s official YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/frightenedrabbit).

“PAINTING OF A PANIC ATTACK” follows 2013’s major label debut “PEDESTRIAN VERSE,” which earned a Top 10 debut in the UK as well as critical acclaim from a wide spectrum of American press, with praise coming from mainstream outlets like Rolling Stone and Time as well tastemaker blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum.  The band’s emotionally charged live shows have earned a devoted fanbase, which includes bands like Death Cab For Cutie and The National – both of whom have handpicked Frightened Rabbit to support them on extensive tours.

Australia’s AVERSIONS CROWN are coming to PITTSBURGH to make U.S. debut w/ OCEANO

Like a cataclysmic storm making landfall, the brand new album Xenocide from crushing Brisbane outfit Aversions Crown is here to destroy everything in its path. Off the back of a long touring cycle for their Nuclear Blast Entertainment debut, Tyrant, which saw Aversions Crown playing alongside Soilwork, Thy Art Is Murder, Attila, Parkway Drive, Psycroptic, Rings Of Saturn and The Acacia Strain, hitting festivals like Unify Gathering and Taste Of Anarchy as well as selling out headline shows on the other side of the world in Germany and the UK, the band refined and sharpened their already potent mix of brutal death metal speed and violence with eldritch atmospherics, audio manipulation and vocalist Mark Poida’s otherworldly vocal range and ability into a new level of destruction.

With teaser tracks “Parasites” and “Erebus” released over the course of 2016 hinting at the new direction, the band teamed up with frequent collaborators Adam Merker at Studio Anders Debeerz in Brisbane and Mark Lewis from Audio Hammer in Florida to create Xenocide. On the goal in mind when writing Xenocide, guitarist mastermind Chris Cougan says “we wanted to accentuate our strengths as Aversions Crown; the extreme drumming, the guitar interplay, Mark’s awesome vocals and really work on the arrangements instead of having a bunch of riffs on top of some blasts.”

With a loose conceptual framework at play across Xenocide’s tales of destruction, revenge, reanimation and murder, Poida enthuses “I really got an awesome brutal canvas to paint a horrible evil lyrical picture on. We pushed it to the limits of our songwriting ability and are very proud of the record.”

Aversions Crown will take Xenocide to stages around the world in 2017. Get in the pit or get out of the way.

Xenocide
was tracked by Adam Merker at Studio Anders Debeerz in Brisbane and mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis (WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) from Audio Hammer.

CONAN Announce Spring North American Tour/Pittsburgh 5/20 @SmilingMoose

CONAN are as heavy as interplanetary thunder amplified through the roaring black hole anus of Azathoth. Remember that sentence, for it is writ large in virgin blood on the walls of the forgotten temple of Bol-Krastor, deep in the steaming forests of forgotten Lemuria. Conan, a monumentally brutal three piece (in the grand tradition of all the hallowed three pieces through time) hold a sinew-tight line and an iron-grip command over the uber-synchronised powerchord changes and tempo-shifts of the anti-holy trio of bass, drums and guitar. Two weary yet defiant men have the task of vocalizing wretched thoughts over the turgid weight of CONAN‘s metalized bombast. They bear it well, for the task is immense.

More on CONAN:
Way back, in 2006, CONAN formed as a two-piece near the old port of Liverpool, and cut a now mythological demo (‘Battle In The Swamp’). The years dragged by, and fellow warriors came and went (we raise our tankards to their memory). Now they have crystallized into a final configuration – founding member Jon Davis still raging on guitar and vocals, but ably assisted by fellow acolytes of the absurd Chris Fielding on bass and vocals and the dexterous Rich Lewis on drums. Collectively their plans are clear: they seek nothing less than the crushing of a billion skulls.
They have committed their filthy, ocean-sized sound to wax (and the slightly less cool compact disc) several times thus far – with more fetid brooding output always on the reddening horizon. First came the hulking mass of a debut album (in 2010) that was ‘Horseback Battle Hammer’ (Throne, Aurora Borealis), followed by the now much sought after split with like-minded Northern Irish sludge-lords Slomatics (Head of Crom, Burning World) in 2011. In December 2011 CONAN returned to the remote wilderness of Foel Studio, Wales, and into the capable hands of producer Chris Fielding (now their bassmaster) for the next album which was to released on Burning World Records in Spring 2012 – the mighty eardrum-warping ‘Monnos’.
A triumphant recording of their live destruction of the 2012 Roadburn festival was released in 2013 as ‘Mount Wrath’. This was followed by a fearsome 12″ split with Chicago doomfuckers Bongripper in 2013 (Holy Roar Records) and a new devil-deal with Napalm Records, resulting in the evil turgidity of third album proper ‘Blood Eagle’ in 2014. Many tours across the blasted wastelands of Europe and the old lands across the Oceans have resulted in a tight slaying unit that pauses for no weakling and decimates all who will not nod to their titan-riffing. Their latest album ‘Revengeance’ was released in early 2016 – A fourth album of such implausible weight that Azathoth itself threatens to implode in a cosmic super-shower of black death-shit.
Hear the roar of battle. Smell the stench of split blood. A thousand heads piled high like a grim mound of suffering – a blasphemy to nature. Hail CONAN!

LA-based band LANY has launched the Kinda Tour, coming to Pittsburgh on Friday, October 21stat Mr. Smalls!

LANY will be on tour to support their latest EP kinda and just completed a number of summer festivals such asBonaroo, Firefly, Hangout, Outside Lands and more. As the most streamed artist through Spotify‘s Discover Weekly feature, their songs have garnered over 22 million streams on Spotify alone. Billboard also recently announced that LANY is the number one emerging artist after the release of the music video for their single “yea, babe, no way.”

Sounds Like: Electronic pop mixing Eighties flash, blue-eyed soul, and the ongoing search for genuine

connection on a smart phone

For Fans of: Phoenix, fun., Glass Animals

Rolling Stone

“Finding the balance between sensuality and mystery in music is a very delicate process.  Some seem born with the right skill set, like the almighty Prince, effortlessly blending their melodies with the right amounts of desperation and longing. Now, [LANY] are tapping into that same rare talent…” –  Consequence of Sound

“…contains the type of moving intimacy that has attracted the attention of pop, R&B and electronica fans over the past few months.” – Billboard

“LANY are the alternative synth threesome out to take over not just the East and West coasts of America but the entire world…” – Wonderland

Leading the charge is alternative group LANY, whose single “ILYSB” is the most-streamed of all the songs that have ever been featured on Discover Weekly. The band is also the most-streamed act ever from the feature, so it’s clear that when the world grows to know LANY and they begin selling out arenas, they will have to thank Spotify for at least some of that success. – FORBES

LANY recently concluded their first headline tour which SOLD OUT well before the band played the first show, with the demand to accommodate fans resulting in extra dates being added and rooms extended.  With performances at Bonnaroo, Sasquatch and Firefly, as well as 14-dates opening for Oh Wonder already under their belt this summer, the trio will also be performing at Outside Lands and Life is Beautiful later this year. PRESS HERE for more information.

LANY (comprised of Paul Klein, Les Priest and Jake Goss) happened organically.  It began when the former school friends collaborated on songs that Klein had written and within days they had created a clutch of anthems that were too good to ignore.  Even at this early stage, their songs have connected on a large scale: the blissful dream-pop of “ILYSB” made big waves when they put it online and has over 15 million Spotify plays so far.  Their single “Where The Hell Are My Friends” is already nudging 4 million plays in a matter of weeks.  LANY create music that makes the intimate feel universal and connects them indelibly with their growing fanbase.

EYEHATEGOD To Kick Off US Tour With Discharge And Toxic Holocaust

Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe will be filling in for EYEHATEGOD vocalist Mike IX Williams on their upcoming Fall tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust.
Elaborates Williams of the decision, “Once again, rather than cancel an amazing tour, we have chosen for EYEHATEGOD to continue on and give one-thousand-percent. This 2016 Discharge tour is super important to me as that band has been a huge influence on my life, but my health situation right now dictates that I am not able to take the stage and perform to the best of my abilities every single night. This is where our good friend Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God comes into the picture. We’ve known Randall since the early ‘90s when EYEHATEGOD would pass through Virginia and he’d offer for us to crash at his crib after our gigs. Great times and we became great friends. To have Mr. Blythe on board as a fill in for me on vocals for this run is a true ‘circle-stays-unbroken’ turn of events! Coming off the heels of Philip Anselmo doing vocals for EYEHATEGOD on two high profile shows [last month’s performances at Southport Music Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana and the 2016 edition of Gwar BQ in Richmond, Virginia respectively], both of these men are at the top of their game. I am getting the medical help I need and will return to the band as soon as possible. Thank you, everybody… ”
Adds Blythe, “Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a massiveEYEHATEGOD fan. I’ve seen them play more times than I can remember, my old side project covered ‘Dixie Whiskey’ for anEYEHATEGOD tribute album, I wear their merch, I even have a freakingEYEHATEGOD tattoo that I got in New Orleans. They are one of my favorite bands of all time, period. I’ve also been friends with the guys in the band since the ‘90s… actually, I knew them before I knew the dudes in my own band, and EYEHATEGOD would often crash at my crib when they came through Richmond. So it’s a bit difficult for me to say, ‘I’m super-happy that I’ve been asked to fill in for Mike IX Williams on this upcoming tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust.’ In fact, I can’t honestly say that at all because, once again as a fan and, more importantly, a friend, no one would rather see Mike do this tour more than myself. Mike IX is THE voice of EYEHATEGOD, and I respect him as a friend, musician, and writer way too much to ever think otherwise. What Ican say is that I am beyond honored to be serving a brief tour of duty on vocals with EYEHATEGOD for this upcoming run.
When I was asked to fill in for Mike IX due to his health issues, I immediately said, ‘I’ll do it, as long as all of the guys in the band are cool with it, especially Mike; it can’t be any other way.’ I know from talking to him that Mike is very, very bummed to not be on this tour, especially given the fact that the legendary Discharge is one of his all-time favorite bands. In light of that fact alone, it’s a huge testament to the man’s character that he’s being gracious enough to let the band continue to work while he concentrates on his medical issues, which are entirely legitimate and prevent him from taking the stage night after night. The other guys need to keep the band alive while IX gets better. As anyone who has ever seen the band can attest, the stage of an EYEHATEGODshow isn’t exactly the ideal place to rest and recuperate from an illness, and that is the most important thing here: that Mike IX gets better. In order to both give him the time to take care of his health while simultaneously keeping EYEHATEGOD an active working unit, I’ll be proud to do my bit on this tour and take the stage with what is undeniably one of the heaviest bands on earth. It will be a savage experience; I can promise you that. Let the down-to-earth-motherfuckin’-post-amplification-blues begin! Hail Mike IX.”
EYEHATEGOD’s journey with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust will commence on October 6th and run through October 15th trampling ten cities in seven states, the tour concluding with a one-off show in Chicago with Negative Approach and Svlphvrvs. See all confirmed dates below.

_untitled__1EYEHATEGOD reemerged stronger and more determined than ever before with their self-titled LP, which dropped in 2014 via Housecore Records. Reaping critical acclaim globally, the record marks the band’s most successful release in their twenty-five-plus-year lineage. Having helped define the NOLA sound with their signature down-tuned, blues-inflected guitars awash in furious distortion, underpinning the tormented screams of Mike IX Williams over a thundering rhythm section,EyeHateGod personifies desperation and addiction in the various backwaters of forgotten America, punctuated by the “N’awlins” sound of rebellion and pollution resulting in triumph over adversity.

Jim James Announces Solo Album Out 11/4 + Tour

Jim James’ Second Solo Album
Eternally Even
out November 4th

Announces Headline US Tour

“One of rock’s most powerful singers and one of its most fearless architects” -Rolling Stone

Jim James, frontman of My Morning Jacket, announces the release of Eternally Even, out November 4 via ATO/Capitol Records.

Defying categorization, James’ second solo project, Eternally Even, co-produced by Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes) and Jim James, is a heart-thumping call to action. The timing of its release, smack in the middle of election season, is no accident.

“I wanted to make an album that hopefully speaks to the issues of the day, many of which, sadly, are issues we have been dealing with since the beginning of time.” says James. “Most of what I think about right now is how so many things in the world are SO fucked up- our political system is broken and corrupt…our earth is being destroyed by climate change…people are not treating each other with equality and respect… and I think- are we going to make it?  Are we going to figure it out and fix it before it’s too late? Can we ever truly open our hearts and embrace love in all its beautiful forms? I think it’s still possible. I still have hope in humanity. I’m just trying to be a part of the discussion and encourage people to speak out for equality, to not be afraid to speak out for peace and love. All of us feel afraid at times in these absolutely insane times, but its important we speak our minds, cast our votes, and do not give in to fear and hatred.”

In early 2013, his first solo full length Regions of Light and Sound of God was released and met with widespread critical acclaim. Praised as “truly breathtaking” by Time Out and “magnificent” by Rolling Stone, the album was followed with a sold-out national headlining tour and appearances on Late Night with Jimmy FallonJimmy Kimmel LiveLate Show with David Letterman and Austin City Limits.

Jim James will be embarking a solo tour this winter. Dates listed below—tickets go on sale this Friday, September 23. Jim James fan club members get first access to tickets tomorrowSeptember 20th. Get more information on the pre-sale and join the fan club here.

DAN REED NETWORK Announces US Tour Dates

unnamed-1Earlier this year, DAN REED NETWORK released their new album “Fight Another Day” via Frontiers Music srl.  The album marked the first album in 25 years from one of the most infectious and gifted bands to come out in the Melodic Rock World in the second part of the 80’s.
The band’s multiple hit singles and albums between 1987 and 1991 in places like the UK and Scandinavia indicate that there is something uniquely appealing about DRN’s hybrid sound and multi-racial line-up. They toured with Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones. Then Dan Reed walked away from the music at the height of his fame.
The release of the new album has been accompanied by the first Dan Reed Network shows in decades. Sold-out shows in the UK and Europe were accompanied by rave reviews.
And now the band returns to the road in the US!  In support of  “Fight Another Day” DAN REED NETWORK have scheduled a handful dates in The US including stops on both the East and West coast.    The dates are listed below.
DAN REED NETWORK:

DAN commented on the upcoming tour:
“This will be the first time DRN has performed in New York, New Jersey and Los Angeles in over 20 years and the band is truly excited about returning to the US after reuniting, making a new studio album and after having performed some amazing club shows and rock festivals in Europe! We have such great memories of playing to packed houses at the Cat Club and The World’s End in NYC, and our sold out show at The Roxy in LA still ranks as one of our favorite shows of our career back in the day! DRN will be kickin’ up the funk rock and performing a ton of DRN classics and new tracks from our 2016 album ‘Fight Another Day’, and truly can’t wait to get everyone’s reaction to the live set once again!”
“Fight Another Day” is available for purchase via iTunes and Amazon.
Make sure to check out the band’s new videos for “The Brave” and “Divided”.
The new album was recorded primarily in the hometown of members of DRN, Portland, Oregon, while most of the writing process took place in Dan Reed’s private studio in Prague in the Czech Republic, where Reed currently resides with his family. Demos were sent back and forth between Derek Shulman (A&R for Frontiers), Brion James, Melvin Brannon Jr. and Rob Daiker, making notes and refining the songs over great distances via the Internet. This process was not unlike with DRN composed songs back in the late 80’s and early 90’s as Dan Reed used to demo out songs on his Akai 12 track machine and bring the songs into rehearsals where the band members would then arrange and flesh out the band’s classic ‘funk rock’ sound.
DAN REED NETWORK is:
* Dan Reed – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitars, Piano, Synth Programming, Moog Bass
* Brion James – Vocals, Lead and Rhythm Guitars, Synth Guitars, Synth Programming, Drum Programming
* Dan Pred – Drums, Percussion, Videographer
* Melvin Brannon II – Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Bass, Electric Contra Bass, Synth Bass
* Rob Daiker – Vocals, Keyboards, Synth Programming, Drum Programming

Grouplove first came together in 2009 and were quickly hailed for their standout live performances, both as headliners and at such international festivals as Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Reading + Leeds Festivals, and Glastonbury.  A year after releasing a self-titled EP in 2010, the band returned with their debut full length “NEVER TRUST A HAPPY SONG” featuring a trio of breakout singles – “Colours,” “Itchin’ On A Photograph,” and the RIAA-certified platinum hit “Tongue Tied” which spent 3 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Alternative radio chart. The quintet’s second full length album – 2013’s “SPREADING RUMOURS” – was met with a raft of acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times, NYLON, and National Public Radio who called it “ludicrously easy to love.”  As with all of Grouplove’s recorded material, the collection was produced by the band’s own Ryan Rabin, and was highlighted by singles “Ways To Go” and “Shark Attack.”  In 2014, Grouplove contributed the original song “Let Me In” to  “The Fault in Our Stars – Music From the Motion Picture,” the musical companion to the blockbuster film based on The New York Times bestseller. That same year, the band was tapped to create the theme song to the Netflix Original Series “BoJack Horseman.” Last year, vocalist/keyboardist Hannah Hooper collaborated with Volcom for a Lady Grouplove capsule collection of clothing inspired by her personal style and artwork.
Grouplove is: Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Hannah Hooper (vocals, keys), Andrew Wessen (guitar, vocals), Ryan Rabin (drums), and Daniel Gleason (bass).

Temple Of The Dog Premieres Previously Unreleased Track “Black Cat” Via Rolling Stone

SPECIAL 25TH ANNIVERSARY REISSUE COLLECTION TO BE RELEASED BY UME ON SEPTEMBER 30TH
Temple of the Dog – the Seattle supergroup featuring Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, Pearl Jam’sJeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready, and drummer Matt Cameron (who plays drums with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam) – has reunited and will tour for the first time ever since forming in 1990. Read Cornell’s interview with Rolling Stone and listen to the band’s previously unreleased track “Black Cat” HERE.
On September 30th UMe will release a special Temple of the Dog 25th anniversary reissue collection of their landmark album, newly mixed by Brendan O’Brien. The collection will be available in four configurations, including a four disc Super Deluxe, a double LP, a two CD Deluxe, and a single CD. Physical pre-orders are available today along with a detailed list of the contents of each configurationHERE.
Temple of the Dog came together from the ashes of Mother Love Bone following the death from a drug overdose of its frontman Andrew Wood, Cornell’s close friend and roommate. Cornell wrote future TOTD songs “Say Hello 2 Heaven” and “Reach Down” to help process his grief, “but the songs didn’t have any destination,” he says. “I was compelled to write them and there they were – written in a vacuum as a tribute to Andy. My thought was that maybe I could record these songs with the remaining members of Mother Love Bone and that maybe we could release them as a tribute.”
Mother Love Bone’s Gossard and Ament began playing with McCready, and they brought in Soundgarden’s Cameron to drum on demos. Because this was a collaboration, and a tribute, there was no commercial expectation for the Temple of the Dog album. It would be, Gossard would later observe, “the easiest and most beautiful record that we’ve ever been involved with.” Adds Cornell: “Temple was about making an album simply for the joy of doing it. We weren’t concerned what anyone outside of our group of friends would think of it. It was the first and maybe only stress-free album that we all made.”
Gossard, Ament, and McCready were also simultaneously forming a new band, which more than six months later would be known as Pearl Jam. A singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder, who was vying to lead the project, came into the studio to sing background vocals on three of the Temple songs. When Cornell thought another song, “Hunger Strike,” needed a duet, Vedder was enlisted. “Hunger Strike” became a hit single, peaking at No. 4 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Temple of the Dog performed live only a handful of times, most notably in Seattle, in November and December of 1990. Those shows have become some of the most legendary Seattle concerts of all-time. Their 2016 shows mark the first time the band has ever toured. (Cornell joined Pearl Jam in 2014 at the Bridge School show and for two nights at PJ20 in Alpine Valley, WI, and the Temple line-up played “Reach Down” and “Call Me a Dog” at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall in January 2015.)
“This is something no one has ever seen,” Cornell says of the official reunion. “We wanted to stop and recognize that we did this and pay homage.”
Temple of the Dog’s upcoming tour dates are as follows:

11/07  New York, NY           Madison Square Garden
11/11  San Francisco, CA  Bill Graham Civic Center

BRIGHTON -- New Record by THE SHONDES -- 9.16.16
The Shondes – Brighton album trailer
When The Shondes released The Garden (Exotic Fever 2013), frontwoman Louisa Solomon said it was “an album about growing up,” and she had no idea how right she was.Rolling Stone’s 4-star review dubbed it “Riot-grrrl furor, arena bombast and klezmer stomp,” while The Washington Post said: “Every time I’ve seen The Shondes, a hurricane has touched down. Violinist Elijah Oberman rocks his instrument like the world is ending. Louisa Solomon sings like her soul is leaping out of her mouth. Every time I wondered when the band would break big.” With this game-changing wave of critical praise, followed by a national tour with punk legends Against Me!, the scrappy, heart-on-their-sleeves New Yorkers were truly coming into their own, and they set right to work on their follow-up, Brighton (Exotic Fever 2016).

On this record we find the band delivering their signature power hooks, charming group harmonies, and clap-along breakdowns with a new ease and sophistication. It feels lighter, more confident, less forced; where they once fought for hope, willed anthems into being, they now sound effortlessly alive. This is in no small part due to the founding pair (best friends Oberman and Solomon) alighting on the right lineup. Drummer Alex Smith and guitarist Courtney Robbins were both recruited in 2015, with Robbins relocating from Tucson. There is an unmissable and even magical cohesion among the four, as though with this level of musicianship, a burden has lifted and the music can finally bloom into the satisfying, spirited pop-rock it always wanted to be. They have been described as “Bruce Springsteen-meets-Bikini Kill,” and on Brighton they add serious pop appeal to the formula that will have you punching your fist in the air despite yourself.

With Smith’s cracking snare rousing any listener to full attention, her rock-solid drumming anchors the absolute powerhouse that is Robbins’s guitar. Un-ironically revelling in a wailing solo on one track and creating a tapestry of delicate, twinkling overlays on the next, it dramatically amplifies each song’s emotional pay-off. Springsteen biographer Peter Ames Carlin said Solomon has “better-stand-back vocals…one of the biggest voices in pop,” and she has been compared to the likes of Chrissie Hynde and Corin Tucker, but on Brighton the band provides a foundation for both her signature belt and a gentler head voice rarely utilized on past records. Oberman’s alternatingly keening and raucous violin is its perfect complement, shining in solos and skillful counterpoint. The overall effect is a more dynamic version of a beloved rock band; losing none of their anthemic power, they have crafted eminently joyful, emotionally complex rock songs.

In 2015 Solomon married poet Miller Oberman (yes, much to fans’ delight, he is violinist Elijah’s brother), and many of these songs are in some sense “love songs,” though the most consistent theme of the record is transformation, steering it away from the pitfalls of pop cliché, and toward something much more interesting. The Shondes have always prided themselves on their ability to get a cynic singing along, and they’ve never been in finer form than on this collection in which love, neglect, survival, despair, and hope are inescapably bound. Brighton is a record about turning toward possibility and building beautiful things out of wreckage, and it offers a much-needed soundtrack for the broken and broken-hearted among us who are trying to do just that.

Brit tech metal outfit, SikTh @MrSmalls Saturday August 27

The Brit tech metal outfit, SikTh (www.facebook.com/sikthofficial). The guys just arrived last week, as part of the ‘Sonic Unrest Tour,’ in direct support of Periphery, on their first ever tour on this side. They’ll be at Mr Smalls Saturday August 27.

SikTh formed in ’99, although spent the better part of 2008-2014 on hiatus & returned publicly, headlining the Red Bull Stage at Download, in ‘14.

They’re cited by a lot of bands as an influence, including the headliner, and are kind of a cornerstone that helped launch the djent tone/scene – along with the mighty Meshuggz.

This past December, they digitally released a new 6-track offering, on Peaceville, called ‘Opacities’ (and right after, hit the road with Slipknot). It’s their first new music in 10 years and will be physically released on LP/Cd versions, also on Peaceville, on September 16. For a sample, the new-ish track ‘Philistine Philosophies’ can be seen/heard @ www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8C0-8FACWo.

Chon and Toothgrinder round out the package for the 23-city trek, beginning August 4 in Raleigh, N.C. A full list of dates can be seen below. Stream a new teaser video for the upcoming trek on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/gG8QBJLyo-U. SikTh vocalist Mikee Goodman comments: “Touring America has always been a huge goal for SikTh; up to this point it hasn’t been possible, but we’re pleased to announce we are finally coming over as direct support to Periphery in August! August is a significant month in our career as it marks the 16th anniversary of our first release (‘The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait for Something Wild’). We’ve taken our time, but this is a great tour and opportunity to play for our very patient fans in the U.S. and also make new fans!” SikTh is touring in support of its ‘Opacities’ mini-album, available on iTunes at: http://smarturl.it/Opacities_Digital.

‘Opacities’ will also see a physical release in North America this September 16 via Peaceville. Recorded at Lincoln’s Chapel Studios and produced by SikTh’s own Dan Weller and Justin Hill (mixed by Forrester Savell [Karnivool, Animals As Leaders, Dead Letter Circus]), ‘Opacities’ was described by guitarist Dan Weller as a “more thoughtful, heavier, more refined” record. This is demonstrated in the video for “Philistine Philosophies,” which was directed and created by Mikee W. Goodman and can be seen online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8C0-8FACWo. ‘Opacities’ marks the first SikTh release since taking a hiatus in 2008 before reforming at the U.K.’s Download Festival in 2014.

Cirque du Soleil’s Newest Show Amaluna to Make US Debut in Seattle Jan. 31

Cirque du Soleil returns to Seattle with its latest big top production: Amaluna premiering on January 31, 2013 under the blue-and-yellow Big Top, at King County’s Marymoor Park. Directed by Diane Paulus, a renowned theatre director from New York, Amaluna had its world-premiere in Montreal in April 2012. Seattle will be Amaluna’s first stop in the United States and will be the 8th Big Top production to visit Seattle since 1990.

The Music
Amaluna marks the first time a Cirque du Soleil show works with an all-female group of musicians. With the strong presence of guitars, the overall sound is resolutely contemporary. Bass, drums, cello, vocals, keyboards, percussion support the guitars in delivering a direct music without embellishment. “We wanted to unleash the power in the raw state that artists and musicians bring to the stage,” explain BOB & BILL. BOB & BILL are known for their ability to blur the lines between genres and styles to create an intricately woven visual and musical style that supports the show’s narrative.

The Soundtrack
To help celebrate, Cirque du Soleil has released the soundtrack to Amaluna which features an all woman band performing some of the edgiest music to come out of the Cirque camp to date. The fourteen tracks that comprise Amaluna were all composed by Montreal duo Guy Dubuc and Mark Lassard (aka BOB & BILL). Watch a behind-the-scenes look in their interview below.

Cirque du Soleil has also released the compilation album LE BEST OF 2, a must-have collection of the finest music from the troupe’s most recent modern era: 2005 to today

The Show
Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next. In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men land on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

Amaluna is presented by VISA, the presenting sponsor of the 2013 American tour of the show. Infiniti, CGI, Xerox and Sun Life Financial are the official sponsors.

Cirque du Soleil
From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries.

Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents.

The Intelligence Premieres Video For “Hippy Provider”

Click Here To Watch “Hippy Provider” On Pitchfork

The Intelligence have been a band / musical project since 1999. To date The Intelligence have released seven singles, five split singles, two EPs, seven albums and have made eight compilation appearances. I’ve probably even missed a couple. They join the ranks of artists like Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall in the department of those whose output could be considered hyper-prolific or impossible to keep up with. That said, like the afore mentioned artists, with each release The Intelligence continue to evolve, grow artistically and top themselves. And, YES, you do need to keep up with all the releases.

On “Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me’ The Intelligence do indeed top themselves. Like their last album, “Males” from 2010, they have returned to The Hangar with Chris Woodhouse to record. As with “Males” they seem to continue to jettison their previous deliberate blown-out, lo-fi recording approach for a much clearer sound. Not that there’s any give-up in intensity. The band’s scrambling post-punk guitars, its straight-up, dry-as-a-bone drums, its laconically abstract verses are all here, just viewed through an unusually clear lens. If you didn’t have the songs or the chops this sort of thing could reveal some weaknesses but, in this instance, it showcases Lars Finberg’s knack for writing catchy songs, which incorporate pop hooks, metronomically repetitive guitar riffs and new wavey synth moves.

For those who haven’t been paying attention, “The Intelligence” are the brainchild of Lars Finberg (former of the A-Frames, currently of Thee Oh Sees and Wounded Lion). The Intelligence began as a studio project in which Finberg played all instruments on his home recordings. As the band began to play live and tour the releases have volleyed between full band recordings and Lars layering all tracks himself. On “Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me” Finberg has gone for a mixed approach. Having recently relocated to Los Angeles, Lars assembled an LA line up of the band. Still spending much time at the band’s original home base of Seattle, he has retained a separate line up in that city as well. For this new album he has used them both….as well as doing some songs all by himself. He also invited a number of guests to come in and add to it. The result is the most varied yet cohesive Intelligence album to date.

Press Quotes
“You always wonder, listening to deliberately lo-fi albums, whether the fuzz is there to cover up weaknesses, and what these songs would sound like if you could actually hear them. In The Intelligence’s case, they sound pretty damned good. I’m just not sure that would hold true for everyone.” – Dusted

“Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me is at once the Intelligence’s most lyrically direct and musically exploratory album to date, introducing pastoral psychodelia, space-age bachelor-pad vibes, and at least one proper ballad to the mix.”
– Pitchfork

“Although Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me is notably less frenzied and raw than the band’s past decade of output, The Intelligence has not lost their edge, despite some of the slower, acoustic-based numbers. Rather, they’ve created an often thrilling voyage that defies repetition and predictability.” – Cosequence of Sound

“Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me is a punk rock record that sporadically soothes your spirit, gets you pogo-ing, and almost always will make you dance. The Intelligence (and lest we forget Shannon Shaw) have made a rock record that anyone could ask for, and that everyone should remember.” – Heave Media

MONSTERS SCARE YOU!’s Single “Shut Up, Our Song Is On”

MONSTERS SCARE YOU!, Seattle’s post-hardcore/electro break out, recently signed with Century Media Records and will be releasing their label debut in early 2013. “Shut Up, Our Song Is On” is the lead track from the forthcoming album and the digital single is now available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. The group recently premiered the self-produced music video for “Shut Up, Our Song Is On,” which can be seen here:

With their trademark combination of pop, metal and electronica, MONSTERS SCARE YOU! has become a staple in their hometown scene. In their short existence the band has attracted a dedicated, die-hard fanbase and has been featured as an unsigned act in Alternative Press Magazine.
