New RONNIE JAMES DIO Covers Album “This Is Your Life” Celebrates the Life and Legacy of a Legend

Available April 1, 2014 via Rhino

This Is Your Life Pays Tribute To The Late Singer With Covers Of

His Greatest Songs From Rainbow, Black Sabbath, And Dio

Features Newly Recorded Tracks From Anthrax, Halestorm, Rob Halford, Metallica, Motörhead, Scorpions, Corey Taylor, And Tenacious D, Among Others

To Benefit The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund

Ronnie James Dio is one of the most beloved figures in rock history. His gifts, both as a singer and songwriter, are instantly recognizable, whether he was with RainbowBlack SabbathHeaven & Hell, or leading Dio. Sadly, Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010, but his towering voice and legacy live on.

To celebrate one of rock’s most powerful voices, an all-star group of his friends and fans recorded 13 of their favorite tracks for a tribute album that will raise funds for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (diocancerfund.org). Produced by his longtime manager and wife Wendy Dio, the album includes contributions by such metal heavyweights as MetallicaMotörheadScorpionsAnthrax, andRob Halford, as well as appearances by many of the musicians who performed with Dio over the years.

This Is Your Life will be available from Rhino on April 1, 2014 for a suggested list price of $18.98. A digital version will also be available.

Although the songs featured on the album touch on the different eras of Dio’s career, several spotlight his time with Rainbow, including Metallica’s epic, nine-minute “Ronnie Rising Medley,” which combines theRainbow songs “A Light In The Black,” “Tarot Woman,” “Stargazer,” and “Kill The King.” Scorpions add a scorching take on “The Temple Of The King” while Motörhead is joined by Biff Byford from Saxon on “Starstruck.” Rob Halford teams with frequent Dio collaborators Vinny Appice, Doug Aldrich, Jeff Pilson, and Scott Warren for “The Man On The Silver Mountain.” The final line-up of Dio’s solo band – Simon Wright, Craig Goldy, Rudy Sarzo and Scott Warren – are joined by Glenn Hughes (Deep PurpleBlack Sabbath) for “Catch The Rainbow,” a track from Rainbow’s 1975 debut.

Anthrax and Adrenaline Mob honor Dio’s memorable stint with Black Sabbath with their takes on “Neon Knights” and “The Mob Rules” respectively, as does a group, led by Oni Logan on vocals along with Jimmy Bain, Rowan Robertson, and Brian Tichy, which performs “I” from Dehumanizer.

This Is Your Life also includes songs from Dio’s back-to-back platinum albums Holy Diver (1983) and The Last In Line (1984), with Doro’s take on “Egypt (The Chains Are On)”, Halestorm tackling “Straight Through The Heart,” Corey Taylor (Stone SourSlipknot) covering the classic “Rainbow In The Dark” andTenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Glass) putting their signature spin on “The Last In Line.” Killswitch Engage’s cover of “Holy Diver,” a hit in its own right when released in 2006, is also included here.

Fittingly, Ronnie James Dio provides the finale (and the album’s title) with his moving performance of “This Is Your Life.” Originally released on Angry Machines (1996), the song’s lyrics explore mortality and are backed by a stark and beautiful arrangement that features Dio accompanied only by his longtime keyboardist Scott Warren on piano. The song serves as a poignant reminder that we will never hear a voice like Dio’s again.

The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, co-founded by Wendy Dio, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable fund dedicated to supporting cancer-prevention research, raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of early detection and prevention when dealing with this deadly disease.

REVIEW: German rock legends The Scorpions release MTV Unplugged in Athens on Bluray, DVD, and CD

When it comes to making immaculately crafted acoustic sets that warrant repeated listens, MTV Unplugged has a nearly unparalleled track record. For a program and recording series that has spanned more than twenty years, and seen such a wide and disparate cast of talents, the show has become a cornerstone for acoustic sets. From Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam, to Led Zepplin and Kiss, to LL Cool J and Jay-Z, one thing remains the same, and that is the consistency and standard they hold to the audio quality of all of their recordings.

On the latest release, Scorpions Unplugged In Athens, MTV has stayed true to their format and delivered another high quality performance from a group of musical legends. The release, a CD-DVD combo set, is set below the stars in a gorgeous open-air amphitheatre in Athens in front of a decent sized crowd Scorpions loyalists. The band has come dynamically well equipped and full bodied to this performance, appropriating 6 additional musicians, a full 8-piece string section accompaniment from the group Strings From Heaven, as well as special guest appearances from Morten Harket, Johannes Strate, CATHE, and Dimitra Kokkori. The sound is full and rich, the quality is exceptional, and most of all the music is on point, staying true to the spirit and energy the Scorpions have been conjuring since the early seventies.

All the huge classics are here in spades: “Rock You Like a Hurricane“, “No One Like You“, “Send Me an Angel“, “Still Loving You“, and “Wind of Change“. The instrumental arrangements are dynamic and robust, doing justice to the sound that brought these German rock legends international fame and recognition. Around every corner there are visually as well as audibly interesting details that make watching worth the price of admission. For instance, the finger picking insanity at the beginning of “Speedy’s Coming”, or any of the mid-set solos illustrating the guitar chops and expertise of a lifetime of performing.

As this Unplugged album comes on the heels of the worldwide Scorpions farewell tour, it seems these guys are alive and still kicking. While they’ve had a long touring history and become heavy metal icons, it seems fitting to see a group that have been together for the better part of forty years to step into a subtler arena and do an acoustic set. Although the boys have additionally confirmed after the farewell tour that they will not be breaking up, it seems that they might be ready to step back and take some time to reflect. Overall this is an entertaining set, albeit a bit relaxed and calmed down compared to the Scorpions early catalog. A must have for any die-hard Scorpions fan.

Los Lonely Boys “Revelation”: The latest album by the Grammy-winning “Texican” rock trio is their first since guitarist Henry Garza took a nasty fall from the stage last year. Revelation – to be released January 21st, 2014 on the band’s own LonelyTone imprint Jan. 21, 2014, in association with the respected Austin-based indie Playing in Traffic and MRI – is a landmark release for the siblings. While maintaining the infectiously melodic mix of bluesy rock ‘n’ roll and rootsy brown-eyed soul that’s long endeared Los Lonely Boys to its fiercely loyal fan base, Revelation adds an expansive range of new sonic elements, e.g. the conjunto touches of “Blame It On Love,” the reggae groove of “Give A Little More,” the rustic acoustic textures of “It’s Just My Heart Talkin’ and the baroque pop elements of “There’s Always Tomorrow.”

Dean Guitars and Ddrum CEO To Play Bass on First Half of Uli Jon Roth North American Tour

As the 40th Anniversary of his joining the Scorpions North American tour rolls on, ULI JON ROTH has confirmed that Dean Guitars and Ddrum CEO Elliot Rubinson will be playing bass in ULI’s band for the first half of the tour. Rubinson recently toured North America as a part of Michael Schenker’s band. Elliot started on January 26th in Santa Ana, CA and will continue on the tour through February 12th in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. In addition ULI will be joined by various Dean Artists throughout the tour.

Elliot commented about being a part of ULI’s band on the upcoming tour:

“I have been fortunate to be able to have played with ULI everywhere from cruise ship tours to European trade shows. He is clearly one of the greatest guitarists ever with a sense of harmonies few possess. Since we grew up on the same music we share a passion for greats like Jimi Hendrix. I am very excited about being a part of the filming and recording taking place on this tour”

ULI is equally excited to be playing with Rubinson:

“It is always a real pleasure to share the stage with Elliott Rubinson. Not only is he an excellent bass player, who delivers the goods at every show, but he also connects with the audience in a great way. Together we’re rocking the house!”

As one of the founding members of THE SCORPIONS, ULI wrote much of the material on the bands first five albums (“Fly to the Rainbow”, “In Trance”, “Virgin Killer”, “Taken by Force” and the critically acclaimed live release “Tokyo Tapes”). These albums helped shape what is now considered the classic SCORPIONS sound.

Breaking major ground with his music, ULI is regarded as a significant influence by many notable guitar players of yesterday and today including but not limited to Slash, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen. Having collaborated and shared the stage with the likes of Jack Bruce, UFO, Brian May, and others, ULI continues to inspire and pave the way for musicians and fans alike.Widely recognized as perhaps the single most important protagonist of Neo-classical guitar playing, ULI is seen by many as a trend-setter who has often been considerably ahead of his time.

In addition to his breathtaking 40th Anniversary shows, ULI will also be offering his world renowned Sky Academy Seminars while he is on the road in North America. The aim of Sky Academy is to provide knowledge and inspiration to those who take guitar playing seriously and to help them reach a new plateau. The seminars are designed to open musicians’ eyes to new possibilities and to trigger an awakening of the student’s full potential and talent. Special emphasis is given to inspirational concepts rather than technical means. While the academy is also discussing matters of technique, purely practical aspects of guitar playing are not at the forefront of the teaching. This means that exercises play only a minor role in the seminar, which aims to impart ways of HOW to get better in a short time, rather than prescribing exercises as a means to get better, or as some sort of musical ‘medicine’. Exercises are undoubtedly an important part of any musician’s development, but there are already numerous facilities to learn about these things, and Sky Academy is designed to teach particularly those things which are not normally touched upon in music teaching, but which provide a true gateway to mastery.

ULI JON ROTH Issues 2013 Update – North American Tour Kicks off This Month

Greetings to all of you! I hope you had a great New Year. Here is a condensed list of some of the events that are planned for the first half of this year.

2013 is going to be a very busy and intensely productive year ahead, it seems.

We will start off with a two-day Sky Academy in Los Angeles, at the Santa Monica Playhouse on January 21st and 22nd. This is a beautiful, intimate theatre, where we held one of the previous Sky Academies which we all have fond memories of. I’m looking forward to being there again!

The next day I will take part in Jason Becker’s “Not Dead Yet” concert in San Francisco, together with my friends Steve Morse, Richie Kotzen, Gus G, and several other great players. Jason is an inspiration to all of us and I feel honored to be part of this worth-while cause.

Following that, I shall be attending the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California and will do a signing event for the Sky Guitar Limited Edition at the DEAN booth.

At the end of January we are embarking on my extensive 40th Anniversary Tour of the US, which will take us all the way through February until the beginning of March. 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of my involvement with the SCORPIONS. The main theme of this tour will therefore be dedicated to performing my personal favorites from the five albums which I recorded with that great band.

I have chosen about 30 songs in all from that era as the basis of our repertoire, several of which have never even been performed live by either the Scorpions or myself. We will be rotating a selection of these songs on the tour, varying our sets on a nightly basis, because we cannot possibly play all of them in one go.

We will, of course, also play some ELECTRIC SUN and SKY OF AVALON music, but the main theme of the performance will be dedicated to the early SCORPIONS era.

Every show will be recorded for a live album, which will feature only songs from my time with the SCORPIONS. This will result in a double CD, which will be mixed in 5.1 surround. The release will also contain a DVD and a documentary, including personal behind-the-scenes Super-8 footage, which I shot to document our tours from 1973-1978.

As far as live albums go, I am intending to record 2 further ones in the following years:
One will be featuring my favorite ELECTRIC SUN material -and the next one will consist of SKY OF AVALON/ TRANSCENDENTAL SKY GUITAR music.

In order to do full justice to my selection of SCORPIONS songs we are bringing a large band with an exciting line-up. Due to the length of the tour, not all members were free to do the whole tour.
Therefore some of the positions will be filled by two musicians – each of them playing part of the tour.

The 40th Anniversary US-Tour line-up will be:
Uli Jon Roth, guitars, vocals
Henning Basse – lead vocals
Ali Clinton – guitars, vocals
Niklas Turmann – guitars, lead vocals
Ule W. Ritgen, Elliott Rubinson – bass
Jamie Little, Peter Holmes – drums
Paul Rahme, Corvin Bahn – keyboards, vocals

In addition to the concerts there are 14 introductory SKY ACADEMY SEMINARS to be held during the course of the tour! These are usually taking place at the venues of the shows, on the same days and prior to the concerts. Pre-booking is essential, though. The seminars are not only geared for musicians. Anyone who loves music can attend. Sky Academy is about much more than just guitar playing, but players are also very welcome to bring their guitars and practice amps. The teaching should be useful to players of all levels.

March, April and May will be dedicated to studio work and some shows in England.

I also have been invited to play at the Royal Albert Hall in London by Alfie Boe as a guest for his concerts in April. Aside from this, we are going to collaborate on a new release of “Bridge to Heaven” intended for the Sunflower Jam Cancer Charity.

In June we will play six concerts in South America, co-headlining with Michael Schenker. The dates will be posted very soon.

We are planning further European and UK dates for the second half of 2013 and a tour of Japan

I am also looking forward to my continued involvement in the Robert Johnson Award in Hamburg, Germany, which is a great platform for genuine young guitar talents. As a special appreciation of his talent, I have chosen one of last years’ participants, the 14-year old Merlin Lauert, to share the stage with us at our Wacken 2013 show.

And last, but not least: I have written an entire album’s worth of new material, which I am very excited about. As soon as time permits we will begin to record it.

Once again, many thanks to all of you and God bless!
Have a great 2013!

Uli Jon Roth

Legendary Guitarist ULI JON ROTH to Embark On 40th Anniversary North American Tour

German guitar legend ULI JON ROTH will be returning to North America for a special tour commemorating his 40th anniversary of joining THE SCORPIONS.

ULI plans on celebrating this anniversary with a one of a kind show that features an entire set of SCORPIONS material as well as selections from his extensive solo catalog. Every show on the tour will be recorded for a live album documenting this amazing milestone in ULI’s career.

The tour is currently scheduled to kick off January 25th in Los Angeles, CA and runs through March 3rd in Los Angeles. More dates will be added in the coming days. Stay tuned to http://www.ulijonroth.com for the most up to date schedule.

ULI is looking forward to presenting this historical show to his North American fans:

“Celebrating my 40th anniversary of joining the band, we will play a full set of SCORPIONS songs alongside my more recent material. We will feature several songs from each of the albums that I played on, including some, which have not been played live before. I’m really looking forward to it. Hope to see you there!”

Because of his ground-breaking, highly innovative and distinctive trademark guitar work, ULI is widely regarded as being one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

As one of the main founding members of THE SCORPIONS, ULI wrote much of the material for the bands – by now legendary – first five albums, which include the hugely successful live album “Tokyo Tapes”. These early SCORPIONS years with ULI, Klaus and Rudolf as the nucleus, were absolutely essential in shaping what is now considered the classic SCORPIONS sound.

ULI is regarded as a significant influence by many notable guitar players, including, but not limited to Slash, Eddie Van Halen Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen. Having collaborated and shared the stage with the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Deep Purple, Brian May, Jack Bruce, UFO, and many others, ULI continues to inspire and pave the way for musicians and fans alike.

After his departure from THE SCORPIONS, ULI JON ROTH embarked on a successful career as a solo artist, producing highly influential albums with his band Electric Sun, as well as performing classical concertos with orchestras.

ULI also invented his own instrument the legendary 6-octave Sky Guitar, which is currently on the market as a limited Edition signature model.

In addition to his 40th Anniversary shows, ULI will also be offering his world renowned Sky Academy Seminars while he is on the road in North America. These introductory seminars are not just aimed at guitarists, but fans and even non-musicians may well find plenty to gain from Uli’s unique way of talking about some of the deeper mysteries of music. For some people Sky Academy has even been a life-changing experience, because ULI’s teaching can open up completely new ways of experiencing music.

The aim of Sky Academy is to provide knowledge and inspiration to those who take guitar playing seriously and to help them reach a new plateau. The seminars are designed to open musicians’ eyes to new possibilities and to trigger an awakening of the student’s full potential and talent. Special emphasis is given to inspirational concepts rather than just technical means. Sky Academy is designed to teach particularly those things which are not normally touched upon in music teaching, but which provide a true gateway to mastery.
Tickets for the introductory seminars are available through the individual venues and can also be purchased at http://www.sky-academy-registration.com/.
