NEW YORK, NY (September 1, 2020) – After releasing their debut The Talk EP, buzzing Columbus, OH rock band SOUTH OF EDEN have unleashed the official music video for the EP’s title track!

On the video, which was premiered by Rolling Stone, the band said: “This video ties all the ideas from the record together. Distorted views, unclear agendas, the masses following along and a sense of unsettling tension. All accompanied by a mixture of emotions, moods and lights. ‘The Talk’ was a lot of fun to shoot and quite a strange experience! The pandemic has changed a lot all over the world, and here in Ohio the laws are very strict on social distancing. When it was time to start planning a video, we knew a lot of work and research had to be done to ensure the video came out exactly how we envisioned it and that all of the guidelines were met. Temperature on arrival, masks, social distancing, the whole 9-yards. Kinda hard to read the cameraman’s face when you can’t see it! The craziest part was the director was monitoring on a zoom call from a different state! Everyone did such an awesome job and were so professional about it, it ended being an awesome experience. I’m interested to see what the world looks like when it opens back up again.”

They preceded the EP with the single “Dancing With Fire.” The song already captured top spots at Spotify’s New NoiseApple’s Breaking Rock, and Amazon Music’s Breakthrough Rock & Fresh Rock playlists and received critical acclaim from LoudwireLouderGuitar World and more. The official music video shows the band in their element on the road and showcases their unparalleled performance ability.

“Fast, furious, and buzzing with energy, it’s the shot of classic yet cool caffeine we all need…” – Classic Rock Magazine

We’re a band that writes, records, and plays like the pioneers of rock before us. We aren’t looking to bring anything back, but instead to remind people what rock n roll means. No rules. This music represents what we believe is real, raw music. No click tracks and triggers or copy and paste bullshit. Just a bunch of hippies in a room.”

South of Eden (formerly Black Coffee) are: Ehab Omran [lead vocals, acoustic guitar], Justin Young [lead guitar, vocals], Tom McCullough [drums], and Nick Frantianne [bass]. The Columbus, OH quartet have already performed alongside everyone from the Foo Fighters to System Of A Down, and invite you to join them on their journey of looking at rock ‘n’ roll through a modern lens.

We want to open up the doors for rock in the modern era,” exclaims Ehab. “We want to sound the way we hear rock in our heads—vintage with a sprinkle of today. We try to give listeners the feeling of discovering the genre for the first time. We think now is the moment to be a rock band.

The band has already paid their dues to reach this point. Growing up in Columbus, OH the band formed by combining their passions and uniting over their love of music. Originally from the country of Jordan, Ehab primarily listened to the Arabic music his parents would play, in addition to superstars like Michael JacksonPhil Collins, and James Brown. After coming to America, he was introduced to a wider range of music that inspired him: eighties and nineties rock including Guns N’ Roses and notably Queen. Just like Freddie Mercury’s parents, Ehab’s parents didn’t agree that a life in rock ‘n’ roll was the best thing for their son. However, as he met the rest of the band, his dream became a life affirming reality.

Ehab and Nick performed together in various bands (channeling Iron MaidenRed Hot Chili Peppers, and Alice In Chains) and eventually joined Justin and Tom who had been working on their own band (influenced by Van Halen and Black Sabbath). Justin, who was at the time attending Berklee College of Music, describes first writing with Ehab and noted “The first jam was crazy. He came over with Tom and just listened for a while. We had the riffs to songs, and he just immediately started singing. Here I had gone to music college to find people I could mesh with stylistically, only to come back home and find that my best friend and a singer that I had already known about were all I needed!

This newfound discovery lead to a fast-paced evolution. As Tom noted, “We didn’t have a bass player, bass amp or a bass! Ehab wrote most of the bass lines on guitar and we grooved so well. We were a band for like a week before we had booked our first show two weeks out. We ended up borrowing equipment and we became a band.” As they continued to tour, they crossed paths and shared bills with Puddle of MuddRed Sun Rising and recently graced the main stage of Sonic Temple and Epicenter in 2019. That very same year Jason Flom caught wind of the band and signed them to Lava Records.

When it came to recording, they honor the methods of those who come before them and “tape in a vintage way, with no click track, pitch correction, copy-paste, or any of that nonsense.”

The musicians headed to Los Angeles to record with legendary GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Greg Wells [Adele Twenty One Pilots, Deftones]. “When I first heard the band, it had its own original identity,” explains Greg. “That was something I had waited years to find. I emailed them back saying, ‘I want to be your Mutt Lang’.”

Ehab notes “It’s a mixture of a lot of things. We’re ‘classically rock’ influenced, but listen to so many different genres and eras that there are a lot of different feelings in our music.”

On the lead single Ehab describes “We knew we wanted our first release to showcase our personalities, both in the music and the visual. “‘Dancing With Fire’ is just that; personality. It’s a song about conflict, and to us that conflict is being a bunch of twenty-two-year-olds attempting to make it as a rock band in unprecedented times. We’re excited to see how people interpret the song into their own lives.”

When you hear us, I want you to walk away thinking, ‘That was honest and different’,” Ehab leaves off. “We’re just doing what we do. We’re proof you can do anything you want and shouldn’t compromise your dreams.”

Code Orange have shared “Only One Way,” which is streaming today via Adult Swim’s Singles Series.  Recorded with producer Will Yip at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA, “Only One Way” is the first new music from the band since the release of their widely acclaimed LPFOREVER, which earned Code Orange a Grammy nomination and topped several “Best of 2017” lists including: Rolling Stone’s “20 Best Metal Albums of 2017,” Revolver’s “20 Best Albums of 2017,” and The Independent’s “Top 20 Rock & Metal Albums of 2017.”

Code Orange commented on the new track explaining, “We wanted to write a song that felt like something structurally sound and melodic, being chewed up and spit out by a machine; our machine.”   The band added, “We plan to release material on a more regular basis in an attempt to break down rock and metal’s formulaic pattern of long breaks between outputs. This means we must work twice as hard, so we will. The hurt will go on. The end will never come…”

Code Orange will be embarking on a UK Tour starting in April (full dates here).

Aimee Mann’s Mental Illness, her first album in five years, was released on March 31 via her own SuperEgo Records. The record follows 2012’s Charmer, which Rolling Stone proclaimed “shows off the more pop-oriented side to her usual acoustic tendencies.” With this follow-up, she returns to a more musically soft-spoken but still lyrically barbed approach, as heard in the album’s lead single, “Goose Snow Cone”.

Mental Illness shows off Mann’s rich, incisive and wry melancholia in an almost all-acoustic format, with a “finger-picky” style inspired by some of her favorite ‘60s and ‘70s folk-rock records, augmented by haunting strings arranged by her longtime producer, Paul Bryan. Additional players include: Jonathan Coulton on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bellerose on drums, Jamie Edwards on piano, John Roderick as a co-writer and Ted Leo (who recently joined her in a joint side project, The Both) as a background singer.

On this eleven-track album, the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning singer remains a student of human behavior, drawing not just on her own experiences to form the characters in the songs but tales told by friends. “I assume the brief on me is that people think that I write these really depressing songs,” Mann says. “I don’t know—people may have a different viewpoint—but that’s my own interpretation of the cliché about me. So if they thought that my songs were very down-tempo, very depressing, very sad, and very acoustic, I thought I’d just give myself permission to write the saddest, slowest, most acoustic, if-they’re-all-waltzes-so-be-it record I could…I mean, calling it Mental Illness makes me laugh, because it is true, but it’s so blunt that it’s funny.”

After several albums with Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo Records. In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on many film soundtracks, most notably the song score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, with “Save Me” landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song.

In 2014, Mann joined up with Ted Leo for a more rock-oriented duo project, releasing a self-titled album under the name The Both. Other extracurricular activities since Charmer ranged from playing herself on the hit TV series Portlandia to performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House. Named one of The Huffington Post’s “13 Funny Musicians You Should Be Following On Twitter,” Mann has gained a diehard social media following for her quick wit and stinging observation.

Emperor Of Sand finds Mastodon returning to a deeply imaginative and complex conceptual storyline that ponders the nature of time. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the band conjures the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass. “Emperor of Sandis like the grim reaper,”says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. “Sand represents time. If you or anyone you know has ever received a terminal diagnosis, the first thought is about time. Invariably, you ask, ‘How much time is left?'”
“We’re reflecting on mortality,” adds bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders. “To that end, the album ties into our entire discography. It’s 17 years in the making, but it’s also a direct reaction to the last two years. We tend to draw inspiration from very real things in our lives.”
Emperor Of Sand was recorded at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw, just outside Mastodon’s hometown of Atlanta, with producer Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Neil Young, AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine), whofirst worked with Mastodon on their seminal 2009 album Crack The Skye.
Over the course of Mastodon’s career, the band members have fearlessly continued to push themselves towards greater creative heights on their recorded output. Each studio album has united an ever-expanding worldwide legion of fans who have come to expect the unexpected twists and turns that have elevated Mastodon to become one of the most respected and influential creative forces in rock music.

“Chances are you could use heavier rock in your life, and Mastodon’s riff-heavy epics are as friendly to non-metalheads as they are to heshers.” New York magazine

NEXI Industries Adds ‘Must-Have’ Analog Chorus to Guitar Effects Pedal Collection

sp_view1_analogchorus_white_cALPHEN AAN DEN RIJN, NETHERLANDS  — Pure, lush and warm, the guitar tones of yesteryear are alive and well thanks to NEXI Industries’ new Analog Chorus (CHO-01) guitar effects pedal. The player can call on the Chorus for many different styles of music and whenever a rich, thicker sound is needed. It’s “warm syrup” without the stickiness, leaving the player in full control of the tone they want to achieve. Whether this effect is used to broaden the arpeggiated chords of an 80s classic or to add depth to a modern dance jam, the Analog Chorus is a versatile pedal that players will want on their board’s regular lineup.

A chorus pedal essentially gives the effect of more than one guitar playing by doubling the original sound and then putting it slightly out of time and tune. NEXI’s Analog Chorus pedal has three onboard controls that give the player flexibility in how they dial in their tone. The Speed knob makes the wavering sound effect faster or slower, while the Depth knob controls how much effect the player gets. Or, switch the Ultra Classic knob to “on” for a pure effect that’s reminiscent of the early days when the chorus became popularized by some of the era’s most influential bands, including Pink Floyd, The Police and U2.

Like all NEXI pedals, the Analog Chorus was designed by boutique effect pedal creators, the self-declared “Vintagesp_detail1_analogchorus Analog Protection Squad,” who are committed to providing a unique tone without compromise. All NEXI pedals are true bypass and hybrid, and all are tailor-made to plug ‘n play. That means the Analog Chorus can be used standalone with a 9V battery or plugged right into the external power supply of NEXI’s revolutionary pedal board. Aptly named “The Solution,” this heavy-duty board has a two-channel switch and three-step booster to satisfy every guitarist’s ego. It’s also equipped with covers that protect ports against dirt and beverage spills (splash-proof), a built-in tuner and power supply, and two charging docks for tablet or smartphone. Players can rock confidently, knowing that their board—and their Analog Chorus pedal—are safe and sound.

The Analog Chorus pedal may be steeped in nostalgia, but it’s built with the durability, convenience and compatibility today’s players are seeking—and at the €99.95 (approx. USD $105) price point they can afford. Get a closer look and hear a demo at

Superjoint release “Caught Up In The Gears Of Application”

dsc_6635SUPERJOINT was resurrected in 2015 after the original band broke up a decade earlier. At the behest of the late Corey Mitchell, co-founder of The Housecore Horror Film Festival, SUPERJOINT founders Philip H. Anselmo (Down, Pantera, Scour, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Arson Anthem et al), Jimmy Bower (Down, Eyehategod), and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al) joined forces with longtime comrades, drummer José “Blue” Gonzalez (Warbeast, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals) and bassist Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Woven Hand, 16 Horse Power). A new era of the band was born.

Consequently, the band members found true joy in playing together again. After just two tours, new material followed culminating in the scathing sounds of Caught Up In The Gears Of Application. “The minute we started writing, I knew this record would be brutal,” reflects Bower. “Sticking to our true hardcore roots and signature SUPERJOINT sound, we accomplished a record that needed to happen in today’s underground. It’s pissed off! After being on hiatus for eleven-plus years, the chance at a new SUPERJOINT record wasn’t something we took lightly. With newcomers Steven and Joey, we were psyched and eager to get in the Lair and start writing and after two tours with the new lineup, we were able to hit the writing hard! Didn’t take long to accomplish, and we stood and smirked at the playback of what would be the new SUPERJOINT record. With songs like ‘Receiving No Answer To The Knock’ and ‘Sociopathic Herd Delusion’ we had everything to smirk about! This record brings our viscous style of hardcore back to life. Pissed off with everything to prove, SUPERJOINT is back!”

Adds Anselmo of the offering, ““The overall theme means many things, or no things, but there is an underlying message regardless, about how modern technology — computers and all that comes with them, mainly — has affected our lives. As a musician, it has affected my life both negatively (music being stolen) and positively (being in touch with fellow musicians around the world and staying visible). But when looking at the broader spectrum, computer-land has given everyday people a platform in which to bellow like carnival barkers about anything and everything, humdrum or political, whether qualified or not, some with good intentions, some with disingenuous intentions, and some with ideas that lay somewhere in the middle, creating a mishmash of results.”

Preorders bundles for SUPERJOINT’s Caught Up In The Gears Of Application are available via Housecore at THIS LOCATION. For digital preorders, point your browser HERE or HERE.

SUPERJOINT will bring their venom to the stage for their official record release show on November 12th, 2016 in Dallas, their only US appearance of the year. Tickets are on sale now!

HONKY was founded in 1996 and proudly carries the torch held by the likes of Bloodrock, Pantera, ZZ Top, and the red-headed stranger himself, Mr. Willie Nelson. Over the course of two decades, the band has released some of the best stripped down, butt-shakin’, rock ever cut to wax, tape, or CD.

“…there aren’t many bands that can successfully try and compete with Dusty, Frank and The Reverend Willy G but HONKY are out to at least bask in the reflected glory by playing the same kind of swaggering Texan blues rock as The Top with the Southern Trendkill of Pantera thrown in to make sure your hips are shaking and your teeth get kicked in… this is good shit” – Musipedia Of Metal

CRX, New Band Founded By The Strokes’ Nick Valensi, Releases First Single “Ways To Fake It”

Los Angeles, CA – September 8, 2016 – CRX – the new Los Angeles-based band fronted by Nick Valensi, guitarist for The Strokes – released its first single, “Ways To Fake It,” today. The infectious track is from the band’s full-length debut, New Skin, which was recently singled out in Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Music Preview of highly anticipated albums. New Skin will be released on October 28on Columbia Records.
Listen to “Ways To Fake It” HERE. The album pre-order is now underway HERE. Fans who pre-order New Skin digitally will instantly receive “Ways To Fake It.”
Valensi recently spoke with Rolling Stone about CRX and the making of New Skin in this exclusive Q&A. His new playlist for, which can be found HERE, features an intriguingly diverse mix of artists, offering what Vogue calls “the perfect post-summer reality check.”
With live shows being relatively rare for The Strokes, Valensi found himself looking for a way to channel his urge to play live. “I wanted to perform in front of audiences and get back to doing things a little more simply. It got to the point where I missed being on a club stage,” Valensi says, explaining how he came to form CRX.
He began recording demos on his laptop at home last summer and, as the songs progressed, he invited a few trusted friends to join him. In addition to Valensi on lead vocals and guitar, CRXincludes Richie James Follin (keyboards), Ralph Alexander (drums), Jon Safley (bass) andDarian Zahedi (guitar). Approximately half of New Skin’s ten tracks were co-written with his band mates.
Valensi reached out to Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme for feedback on the demos and advice regarding producers that might be right for the band. It quickly became apparent that there was no better person for the job than Homme himself. The album was recorded at Homme’s Pink Duck Studios in Burbank and mixed by Andrew Scheps (Johnny Cash, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adele).
The band explores richly varied sonic terrain on New Skin. “Ways To Fake It” reflects Valensi’spassion for 70s power-pop and 80s new wave as does the dub-tinged “One Track Mind.” “Slow Down” is a wistful plea for a less frenetic pace while the menacing “Unnatural” proceeds at breakneck speed. “Broken Bones” simmers, with Valensi’s effortless falsetto counterbalancing a massively sludgy bottom end.
CRX will preview songs from New Skin at a special headline show at the historic Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA on Saturday, September 17. The band will also headline Schubas in Chicago onSeptember 19 and support Beck on several upcoming dates. See below for itinerary or visit for further details.

Mac Sabbath: Pittsburgh’s Lovin’ It

I must admit, I was skeptical.  I mean, “Drive Thru Metal?”  What about this would work.  A Black Sabbath parody band, appropriately titled Mac Sabbath, almost seemed like an insult to the original band.  I realized, though, that I had nothing to base my opinion on.  Maybe they would be the greatest group to ever enter the Rex Theater.  Parodies are incredible, and this parody group was fully themed down to the paper cup and straw that was their mic stand.  That being said, I loaded my camera, and I enter the Rex Thursday night with an open mind.

I entered the room.  It was poorly lit.  I saw a few dozen balloons scattered across the floor, the small amount of light coming from the stage glistening off of the shiny, inflated rubber balls.  I waited around and readied myself for the first band, Super Fun Time Awesome Party Band, was a bit disappointing.  While they had a stage presence that could captivate an audience, and their light show was great for an opening act.  The quality of the sound they produced was sub-par. Their show was lively, but I was hoping the next band would raise my expectations for the night.

Opener number 2, Only Flesh, was very attention-grabbing.  Classifying themselves, according to their Facebook page, as Glam, Rock, metal, Punk, and Industrial music.  Their set included some theatrics such as sparking bracelets and hooks through necks (yes, you read that right).  Overall, I was satisfied with the performance.  They had a sound that fit them, and the set left me feeling excited for what was next.  Although what was next had me a little nervous.

The following act went by the name Clownvis.  He was in the spotlight a few years back for some inappropriate insults thrown at the judges of America’s Got Talent.  I was concerned, after watching that video on YouTube, that a not-so-nice personality was about to shine through on stage.  Clownvis was actually one of the funniest clowns I have seen to date.  He sang along to classics, such as the Cheers theme song and America the Beautiful, as well as some originals like Barrack-O’s Taco’s.  He even did magic!  He left the stage with a large round of applause, and all that was left was the headliner, Mac Sabbath.

I stood there, waiting patiently as a tarp went up in front of the stage.  The only hints of life behind it were the sound check echoing from the speakers and an ominous shadow with crazy hair occasionally sliding back and forth.  Half an hour went by, and fans were getting restless – and drunk, very, very drunk.  Finally, the music began.  The tarp fell, revealing a cat man, a burger with horns, and drunk, high, and slightly demented form of McDonald’s former icon, Grimace.   As the music played, a clown appeared in a yellow straight jacket.  He wrestled around, breaking free and cackling as if Ozzy Osbourne himself had entered his body.  They began playing songs such as More Ribs, Chicken for the Slaves, Organic Funeral, and Frying Pan.  Throughout the show, theatrics were present.  Confetti flew out of a vomit bucket, water hit the crowd from a ketchup bottle, and lead singer Ronal Osbourne danced around the stage with a straw.  The show ended with the Iron Man parody, Frying Pan followed by a “Mac Flag” song, Pair-a-buns.

Overall, the show, full of great music, gore, theatrics, and maniacal laughter, left me satisfied and glad I came.  I will definitely be looking into more parody bands like Mac Sabbath.

BEST COAST performing in Millvale @Mr.Smalls Theatre on August 15th

The LA duo, Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, released their third album California Nights last year. Rolling Stone gave the California Nights a raving review, describing the album as having “bigger [and pretty glorious] sounds with sharper hooks.” The album is a brighter, more sparkly, more sophisticated, more psychedelic Best Coast album across the board, embodying the rich lightness and stinging darkness of a California state of mind.

Rolling Stone debuts first Kimono Kult single

Introducing: Kimono Kult

New recording project feat. members of Bosnian Rainbows, Le Butcherettes, Swahili Blonde, and more!

Stream first single “Todos Menos el Dolor” exclusively at Rolling Stone

The hazy horizon of Los Angeles. Since it proves perpetually unpredictable, it is not odd when one finds their co-conspirators in disparate locales, often smoothing out the vague and jagged status quos that are only a figment of our own minds anyway. EnterKimono Kult, who’s initiates include current and ex- members of Mars VoltaRed Hot Chili PeppersBosnian RainbowsSwahili BlondeLe ButcherettesDante Vs. Zombies, and Raw Geronimo – all who are adamant that this is not some “all-star” vanity project. In fact, one cannot even SEE Kimono Kult – one can only HEAR Kimono Kult (in theory with the true definition of OCCULT as “something hidden”).

A new project recorded, produced and shot-called by Neurotic Yell CEO and Swahili Blonde mastermind Nicole Turley, Kimono Kult synthesizes all the signature styles and influences from a cream of crop wrecking crew she has at her immediate grasp. Vocally fronted by the untamable Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes, Bosnian Rainbows) their debut EP Hiding In The Light are four songs of electro/dub/afro-beat/avant-freak/jazz-like conversations of instrumental ecstasy.

Opening the record, you hear Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Mars Volta, Bosnian Rainbows) backwards string-arrangement on “Todo Memos el Dolor” (“Everything, Anything But The Pain”), initially reminiscent of Scott Walker’s “It’s Raining Today” before the drum machines anchor it into more modern territory. Teri’s shrill vocals plead with hybrid emotion as they tip-toe through the minimalist abstraction, while hallucinatory synths help narrate the tapestry.

“Las Esposas” (The Wives) begins with a mysterious spoken-word intro, referencing a taunting, dusty 16mm film that may hold such Jodorowskian phantasmagoria, beckoning the character like an estranged lover as Omar’s slithering guitar line interlaces science-fiction beeps/bloops over Nicole’s pounding electro-rhythm.

“La Vida Es Una Caja Hermosa” (Life Is A Beautiful Box) sees some fractured, sour synths filling voids between a post-punk dub foundation, while guitar interplay between Dante White (Dante Vs. Zombies, Starlite Desperation) and John Frusciante help build a mountain of subtle sonic thunder before it all dissolves gingerly into unanticipated silence.

The EP ends with it’s catchiest accessible track “La Cancion de Alexandra” (Song Of Alexandra), an anthemic procession of self-realization where devotion and sacrifice hold hands. Some playfully sophisticated strings from Laena Geronimo (Raw Geronimo) push and pull with dueling trumpet lines to the forefront of this defiant, re-imagined march, Terri Gender Bender taking the role of the writhing Pied Piper as the credits begin to roll of this brief but incredibly resonant recording.

Primus’ Les Claypool Announces New Duo De Twang Album

Listen  “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver”

How “deconstructed” can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That’s exactly what everyone’s favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les’ hilarious jam band mockumentary, ‘Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.’ But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things – as heard throughout the band’s debut recording Four Foot Shack, to be released via ATO Records on February 4th. Preview the album by listening to the duo’s cover of Primus’s “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” via Rolling Stone HERE.

And as evidenced by DDT’s live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions). Case in point, the inclusion of “Battle of New Orleans,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Man in the Box,” “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” on DDT’s debut disc. “A lot of it is just stumbling across it,” explains Les about how a tune is selected to be twang-ified. “You’re twanging away, and then all of a sudden, something just comes out. And then you laugh about it…or you don’t. And then you move on. There are tons of songs that we’ve stumbled across, and these ones just happened to be the ones that stuck.”

Upon hearing Four Foot Shack you’ll quickly discover that Les and Bryan made it a point to keep things as live-sounding as humanly possible. “It was very live,” admits Les. “In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background.  Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it.”

Les added, “The Twang project is me exploring a lot of stuff that I personally listen to; Johnny Horton, Vernon Dalhart, Jerry Reed, Bob Wills, Eddy Cochran stuff like that – it’s another door for me to open. I’m doing this sort of Luther Perkins, Johnny Cash guitar-ish type part on my bass, by doing the old ding-dinka-ding, dinka-ding-dinka-ding on a lot of the stuff. It took me a little bit to get that. Now that I’ve gotten it, I can pull songs out of the air and it’s surprising how many songs easily succumb to the twang, and can be complimented by the twang. When all is said and done, it’s just a hell of a fun project for me right now. I’ll do it ’til it’s not fun anymore.”

Black Label Society have debuted a new single via Rolling Stone

~September 24, 2013~

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY has debuted the brand new single titled “Aint No Sunshine When She’s Gone” off their forthcoming CD/DVD “Unblackened” due outSeptember 24thOriginallypenned by blues legend Bill Withers, “Aint No Sunshine When She’s Gone” is one of two covers found on the “Ublackened” CD/DVD release. Front man Zakk Wylde adds his comment.

“Ain’t No Sunshine” is such a beautiful, heartfelt song.  I’ve always loved it and wanted to cover it.  It felt so right in the context of ‘Unblackened'”

Unblackened,” the new live DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video from Black Label Society will be released on September 24, 2013 by Eagle Rock Entertainment. [Pre-book Order Date September 9, MSRP $19.98 Blu-ray, $14.98 DVD].

Additionally, Zakk’s label home, eOne Music, will release the audio version of the“Unblackened” DVD under the same name. The double disc release will have six additional tracks not found on the DVD, including two acoustic versions of “Queen Of Sorrow” and “Won’t Find It Here,” and covers of Leon Russell’s “Song For You”and “Aint No Sunshine When She’s Gone” by Bill Withers.

Since their early nineties inception, Black Label Society, formed and helmed by guitar legend Zakk Wylde, has been at the forefront of hard rock. Their penchant for hard riffs and blazing solos has resulted in a slew of hugely successful albums and a reputation as one of the most powerful live bands of their generation. Unblackened,” however, unveils another side of the band.

Filmed and recorded earlier this year in high definition at Los Angeles’ Club Nokia, “Unblackened” is Black Label Society presenting their songs in a whole new light, with greater use of acoustic instrumentation. Wylde plays both guitar and piano, with Nick Catanase on guitar, John DeServio on bass/vocals, Chad Szeliga on drums, Derek Sherinian on keyboards/piano, and Greg Locascio providing additional vocals.

Their stripped-down approach highlights the subtler nuances of the songwriting, without losing any of the fire or intensity. Classic tracks like “Stillborn,” “The Blessed Hellride,” “In This River,” “Throwin’ It All Away,” “Losin’ Your Mind,” and many others are still punctuated by the stinging, searing solos that fans know and love, while showcasing the versatility of the band.

In addition to the concert, “Unblackened” is rich in bonus material. A new interview with Zakk, photo gallery, music video for “Losin’ Your Mind,” and a feature with Wylde visiting HM Prison Stocken in the U.K . are all included.

Zakk Wylde, who has been called one of the true guitar heroes of the past 20-plus years, served as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist for over 20 years in addition to his work with BLS. This collaboration led to a string of multi-platinum albums, including Osbourne’s biggest selling “No More Tears,”of which Wylde wrote all the music. Bestowed with such accolades as“Golden God” by Metal Hammer and the “Best Guitarist” Award fromRevolver Magazine, Wylde has proven time and time again that his songwriting, guitar prowess, and on-stage persona, along with his larger-than-life personality, have made him a force to be reckoned with. Black Label Society continues to enthrall fans around the globe, and “Unblackened” is another incredible piece in the band’s catalog.

Ivan Ives, “8mm” video produced by RJD2

iTunes at | on Twitter (@thisisives) | on Facebook

Ivan Ives originally stepped into the hip hop world in 2007. Rolling Stone named him among the next 40 artists to watch; SPIN called him one of top 8 unsigned artists, andXXL said “don’t let his indie rocker persona fool you – this guy can spit.” Born in Russia, but having grown up in Los Angeles, he’s worked with the likes of Cappadonna (Wu-Tang),Tre Hardson (Pharcyde), Percee P & Oh No (Stones Throw), The Cool KidsBlack MilkO.C. (DITC), Vast Aire (Def Jux), and many more. Having gone to film school, he Directs most of his own videos – which have racked up over a million streams on YouTube without major distribution. His 2010 album “First Of The Month” released a new video and single on the first of every month for the duration of the year. Two years after his last release, Ivan is coming back with a album, Stranger, featuring producers such as RJD2and Aaron Marsh (formerly of rock band Copeland). “8mm” is a song about trying to catalog lost memories on 8mm film,” says Ivan. “It plays in four chapters: Love, Time, Work, Fate. It was entirely on an iPhone with the 8mm app.”

Tunng’s new track “The Village” is revealed by Rolling Stone

New Album Turbines out on June 18th via Full Time Hobby

Bands as emotive and enduring as Tunng don’t come around too often. Across their decade together, the group have honed their pastoral pop to perfection, winning over audiences and critics one rustic twang of guitar, icy electronic echo and sumptuous whisper of vocals at a time to become one of Britain’s most championed underground forces – fitting for an act who began literally underground, in the basement of a Soho women’s clothing boutique some ten years ago.

Now their success story is set to continue with the release of fifth studio album Turbines on June 18th on Full Time Hobby in America, their most bewitching and brilliant listen yet. “It’s been a twisted adventure to this point, one that has taken us all over the world, an amazing journey,” grins instrumentalist and founding member Mike Lindsay. As the band has evolved and grown, so too has its members. “There’s a lot happened in this band in the last couple of years” he adds. “Children born, people moving into different places, falling in love, skipping country, broadening horizons…  maybe this is a coming-of-age record!”

Recorded mainly in a Dorset studio this is the first Tunng album where all six members were more or less all present at each stage of the recording process. Bar an excursion to album engineer and vintage equipment expert Ben ‘Benge’ Edwards’ “synth museum” to add electronic embellishments. It’s an album rich in colour and emotion, from the geyser-like organ eruptions of By This to the trip-hop grooves and thunderous timpani of Trip Trap and Heavy Rock Warning. “I remember thinking that this album would go full circle and match the first record in its experimentalism. But that didn’t happen.” Instead came Tunng’s most direct and affecting effort to date. “It’s more concise,” says Winter. “It’s just the essentials, delivered straight.”

“It’s our sci-fi folk rock album,” declares Lindsay, who stresses the key to Turbines’ enchanting charm is the sense of family among its creators. “We have been through a lot together, seen some amazing places and some pretty bad places too… and it’s time to see some more!”

Owen Premieres “Blues To Black” Track On Rolling Stone

Click Here To Listen To “Blues To Black” Track On Rolling Stone

The songs Mike Kinsella writes as Owen have always had rock solid lyrical foundations. And on new album,L’Ami du Peuple, the same can be said for the music. Emphasis on the rock.

Anyone vaguely familiar with Kinsella’s musical lineage (Cap’n Jazz, American Football, Owls) knows he’s far from a one-note musician. And now, he expands his repertoire as a solo songwriter to include a touch of female vocals, pounding drums, and even dueling electric guitar lines that are the closest thing he’s done in tribute to his 80s hair metal obsession.

The variety of sounds featured on L’Ami du Peuplecan largely be attributed to a new approach Kinsella took to the writing and recording process. Rather than locking himself in a room with mostly finished song ideas for a couple of weeks before emerging with a finished album, this time Kinsella involved producer Neil Strauch (Iron & Wine, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Andrew Bird) from the very beginning and spaced out recording over a few month period.

This enabled him to naturally bring a different mood or vibe to the material he was working on every time he entered the studio — re-evaluating what had been recorded during the previous session and collaborating with Strauch on the direction new songs should take.

As a result, L’Ami du Peuple sounds markedly different than any album Kinsella has released under the Owen moniker.

From the electronic blips and hand claps that punctuate “I Got High,” to the ragtime piano melody running through “Where Do I Begin?” each track possesses a unique and surprising identity.

“In the past I’ve stifled a bunch of my influences and leaned on a couple consistently, but this time I just let each song happen as I heard them and had a lot of fun trying some new things,” Kinsella reveals.

The benefits of this “anything goes” mindset are plainly apparent on album centerpiece “Bad Blood” — a track propelled by a quasi-country stomp that explodes halfway through with an electric guitar solo before dovetailing into a closing crescendo.

“Bad Blood” also affirms that lyrically Kinsella remains as raw and personal as ever. As the title suggests, the song finds Kinsella lamenting his pedigree: “Bad blood / Hereditary law you can’t run away from / (Trust me, I’ve tried).”

This focus on familial relationships occurs often, but with the addition of a new angle on top of those Kinsella has adopted previously  Now the parent of two children, Kinsella finds his perspective on life inevitably shifting from being a “son” to being a “father.”

This role reversal adds a new dimension to Kinsella’s self-examination of his thoughts and fears. As he explains, “Instead of being a son whose father passed away, I’ve moved on to being the father afraid of passing.”

His anxiety at life passing by too quickly is evident on closing track “Vivid Dreams”: “How long have I been sleeping? / I’m a dad and my dad’s dead.”

The question he poses doesn’t come with an easy answer, but for an artist like Kinsella who is constantly evolving and reinventing himself, death is just an opportunity for rebirth.

Steel Pulse Releases “Paint It Black” Track On Rolling Stone

Click Here To Listen To “Paint It Black”

“‘Paint It Black’ is a song that is dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of Rosa Parks but also serves as a testimony of the African diaspora that have survived Western world society,” member David Hinds tells Rolling Stone.

“Despite the disadvantages of slavery and colonialism, we have managed to have a man of color as a leader of this world, in the White House.” The group endorsed Barack Obama in 2008 and the song celebrates the political victory and social change of his reelection, right down to its chorus of, “We have to open up those doors for President 44.”

Steel Pulse may have explored various styles of music since they started out in 1975, but when it comes to the message, the UK’s Grammy – Winning reggae band has remained close to their roots.  The Group have continued their commitment to fighting injustice, educating the masses, and promoting positive messages through spiritually uplifting music.

“We just can’t ignore the politics, because every life and soul that’s born on this earth is a political manoeuvre for someone, at some point”, Hinds explains.  “From a spiritual aspect, it’s really an upliftment through facing reality – what’s out there.  We deal with positive spirits.  It means putting aside the guns, the drugs and all of the things that are ailments of society – especially in the black communities right now”.

The band have always taken their causes to heart, filing a $1 million class action lawsuit against New York City’s Taxi & Limousine Commission.  The group charged that cabbies refused to pick up blacks and especially Rastafarians throughout the streets of New York. 2012 commemorates the 20th anniversary of this action.

Steel Pulse is the only UK reggae group to win a Grammy.  In 1986, Babylon The Bandit Album won the Best Reggae Album category.  Their international success earned them further Grammy Nominations for their albums, Victims, Rastafari Centennial, Rage & Fury, Living Legacy and African Holocaust.

Invited guest appearances include Arsenio Hall, ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jay Leno, The Montel Williams Show and ‘Late Night’ with Conan O’Brien.  The Rev. Al Sharpton, Jay Leno, Branford Marsalis, C Thomas Howell and Robert Townsend have all had cameo appearances in Steel Pulse videos.  The band have been joined live on stage by artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder to the Stranglers and have performed live with Bob Marley & the Wailers, Sting, Inxs, Santana, Robert Palmer, Peter Tosh, Herbie Hancock and Bob Dylan, amongst others. A collaboration with Spike Lee on the Do The Right Thing movie soundtrack in 1989 resulted in David’s composition ‘Can’t Stand It’ featuring in the movie.

In 1993, at the request of the Clinton Administration, they became the first reggae band ever to perform during the inaugural festivities at The White House.

Steel Pulse, started out performing on the British punk scene with groups like Generation X as part of the Rock Against Racism movement was founded in the Handsworth section of Birmingham by Hinds, and core members Selwyn Brown and, Steve Nisbett.  Their original Bass player, Ronald McQueen, named the group after a popular racehorse.

2012 saw the release of Rocksteady, a film co-starring David Hinds and featuring the band’s live members.  The Hind’s track Rocksteady was composed especially for the movie.

The group performed in Haiti for the first time also in 2012. The track Hold on 4 Haiti was written as result of the earthquake and they have been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for the relief effort with Partners in Health. Previously the band made a massive contribution to  Hurricane Katrina.

Steel Pulse are currently working on a new album which will be released later in 2013 and also a documentary of their long career which features live footage and interviews.

Steel Pulse is David Hinds (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar and Selwyn Brown (Vocals, Keyboards).

From Art Brut:

Art Brut have been called many things over the course of our career, not all of them polite. The thing we get called most often is an ‘art band’, which I accept is totally our fault for putting the word Art in our name. However, Art Brut have never seen ourselves as an art band, we have been adamant since we began that we are, in fact, a classic rock band.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to begin your career as a classic rock band, no matter how often you persist in referring to yourself as one.

Over the last ten years, however, Art Brut have been tirelessly working towards the moment we could finally call ourselves a classic rock band and know in our heart of hearts that it was true. Our mission is finally complete.

I submit the following evidence towards the case of us being a CLASSIC ROCK BAND

–  We have been on the front cover of German Rolling Stone.

– Toured the world extensively.

– Appeared on American chat shows.

– Posed naked in the NME.

– Had our lyrics be the subject of lectures at a Berlin university.

– Released four albums over the period of ten years (the last two produced by the legendary Black Francis from the Pixies).

– And finally we are held in universal regard by both our peers and the general public.

(Actually, with that last one I’ve never checked with our peers and have very little to do with the general public but am fairly certain that is the case).

So, to celebrate our new status as a CLASSIC ROCK BAND we have decided to release a Best Of Compilation.

It is called ‘Art Brut; Top Of The Pops’ and is a double album (or if you are downloading it, a lot of songs).

CD1 contains the best and most popular songs from our career in chronological order. So you can see clearly that we have followed the CLASSIC ROCK blueprint exactly –

Album One, Excited

Album Two, Confused

Album Three, Angry

Album Four, Experimental

Plus, TWO BRAND NEW TRACKS. They’re about enjoying natural disasters and making pop music. Optimistic rebirth .

This is textbook CLASSIC ROCK BAND stuff.

CD2 contains rare songs that Freddy Feedback rescued from our vaults including live songs, covers we finally got round to asking for permission to release, hard to acquire b-sides and unreleased demos from our recording sessions for ‘Its A Bit Complicated’ that took place with Pulp’s Russel Senior (who is not mad, I promise).

As a treat to ourselves we commissioned one of our favourite artists Michael Riedel to do the art work for us.

We will be playing live to celebrate our new status and will announce the details soon…..

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Next phase is HERITAGE ROCK BAND, see you in another 10 years for the Second Volume.

Work hard, fly right and don’t forget to tip your bartender.

-Eddie Argos

Parquet Courts are headin’ down south to the Mecca of tacos, Austin, TX, for a flurry of shows at this year’s SXSW festival. After that, they’re heading overseas to the UK for their first-ever shows outside of North America (if the NME‘s 9/10 review of Light Up Gold is any indicator of people’s excitement over there, the shows should be pure madness). Following a little time off, the band will embark on their largest tour of the US yet, part of which will see them sharing the stage with killer Australian outfit Total Control. Dates are listed below.

Over the past 3 months, people have been discovering Parquet Courts’ Light Up Gold, and very quickly anointing it their favorite record of the year. They’re not alone, as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, SPIN, NPR Music, The Guardian, Sound Opinions, and countless other publications and programs have joined choir. In short, this is one of those game-changing rock n’ roll records that people realize they’ll be listening to years from now. File it next to Modern Lovers and Marquee Moon, because Light Up Gold is here to stay. It’s out now on What’s Your Rupture?.

“The Brooklyn-via-Texas band makes near-perfect post-college rock, merging sharp, twitchy post-punk (Wire, The Fall, Gang of Four, The Feelies) and sweet, slovenly early-Nineties indie rock, while nailing all the right 24-or-so themes – not knowing what to do with your life, not being as smart as you thought you were, realizing the world is much bigger and weirder than you’d previously imagined.” – Rolling Stone

“‘I was walking through Ridgewood, Queens/I was flipping through magazines/I was so stoned and starving,’ Andrew Savage rambles on ‘Stoned and Starving,’ a dry-wit post-punk number that could almost pass for a novelty song. That careful balance is on display throughout this album, heavy with bubbling, bulbous guitars by way of Wire, the singing and songwriting mostly split between Austin Brown and Mr. Savage, who are astute enough to write taut, smart lyrics, and self-aware enough to arch an eyebrow while maintaining the pose.” – The New York Times

“Warning: Parquet Courts’ Light Up Gold will induce uncontrollable ear-to-ear grinning” –Jim DeRogatis, Sound Opinions/ 4 out of 4 stars)

“Between the latter-day boho undertones, detuned guitar rave-ups, spaced-out wordiness, and low-fidelity sonics, it expertly mashes up Sonic Youth, Pavement, and Guided by Voices. Nothing out of the ordinary about any of those reference points, but Parquet Courts’ over-the-top energy, speed, and succinctness makes the combination sound fresher than anything the original elements have managed in years” – SPIN (8 of 10 SPIN ESSENTIAL)

“Parquet Courts’ Light Up Gold is a gel-capsule-sized dosage of distilled NYC punk rock: vinegary smarts, reeled-off quotables…and twiggy guitars. It’s maximum-attitude, minimum-patience: not just smart, but frantically smart, blurting out everything it might have to say before the time clock expires” – Pitchfork

“The acerbic lines Savage and Brown spit into the mic about everything from wandering through Queens bodegas (‘Stoned and Starving’) to nostalgia’s relationship with mortality (‘Borrowed Time’) invoke the old-fashioned idea of punk as something more than music.” – Village Voice

“Parquet Courts have produced a debut that’s both instantly addictive and lastingly rewarding: a smart, snappy concoction of worldly wisdom and garage-rock gratification.” –The Guardian (5 out of 5 Stars)

PUJOL Blasts Into Pittsburgh at Club Cafe 12/14

PUJOL, the charismatic Nashville rockers led by the idiosyncratic “philosopher king” Daniel Pujol, are coming to Pittsburgh on Friday, December 14th at Club Cafe – the band is known for their raucous, high-energy live set so this is one you should not miss.

Rolling Stone nailed their description of PUJOL’s music in a recent feature, noting it “shimmers with power pop hooks and a slight dose of fuzz” – their sound and electric stage presence has built a loyal fanbase and phenomenal reputation for the band.

PUJOL arose from the ashes of MEEMAW in 2009 to carry on the Nashvillian ideals of DIY and self construction through adeptly crafted songs based firmly in meaningful lyrical content. It’s these motives and songs that have taken PUJOL from the basements of Middle Tennessee to stages across the country and have garnered notice from more than just those with their ear to the ground.

Releasing a plethora of singles and cassettes over the past two years on Jack White’s Third Man Records, Nashville’s Infinity Cat Recordings and Turbo Time Records among others, PUJOL has now partnered with Omaha’s Saddle Creek. Following the critically praised Nasty, Brutish, and Short EP from last year, PUJOL finally has an official debut full-length ready for unveiling. UNITED STATES OF BEING continues on with PUJOL’s doctrine of trying hard everyday and ventures lyrically to a place that most contemporaries fail to reach. Addressing the current status of twenty-somethings in America’s present and capturing their shared dispositions, the album throws the brakes on “catharsis,” and begs the listener to decide for themselves how to answer the robot’s last question, “What is love?” With riff-oriented guitar playing reminiscent of greats like The Replacements and Beetlejuice-esque earworms, PUJOL now sits atop the fringes of the rock and roll and DIY vernacular.

Whether this strange world chooses to embrace PUJOL is of no matter, as the prolific frontman will continue to carry on as always – Taking Care of Business 24/7. The adrenalized, infectious debut full-length, UNITED STATES OF BEING, is out now on Saddle Creek.
