Roots-oriented psychedelic rock band Greensky Bluegrass @RexTheater 2/7&8

Do you dig the sounds of acoustic rock roots like Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers?  So you can consideYou need to check out Greensky and realize they’re far beyond simply ‘bluegrass’ and as Rolling Stone has said, “they’re representing the genre for a whole new generation.” So this is not your Grandpa’s bluegrass.
Greensky Bluegrass will be playing at Rex Theater February 7 & 8

For more than a decade and a half, the members of Greensky Bluegrass have created their own version of bluegrass music, mixing the acoustic stomp of a stringband with the rule-breaking spirit of rock & roll. They redefine that sound once again with their sixth album, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted.

gsbg-pressLike the band’s own name, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted is a collection of opposites, full of dark psychedelic swirls, bright bursts of acoustic guitar, soundscapes, solos, freethinking improvisation, and plenty of sharp, focused songwriting. It’s wild and wide-ranging, showing off the diversity Greensky Bluegrass brings to every live show. At the same time, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted is unmistakably a studio album, recorded during two different sessions — one at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, North Carolina; the other at the Mountain House Recording Studio in Nederland, Colorado — that comprise the band’s longest block of recording time ever. The result is an 11-track album whose songs cast a wide net, mixing the full-throttle energy of a Greensky Bluegrass concert with the nuanced approach of a band that’s still eager to explore.

“You can call us an acoustic ensemble, or a drum-less rock band, or a rock & roll bluegrass band,” says mandolin player Paul Hoffman, who, along with guitarist Dave Bruzza, handles most of the album’s writing duties. “All of that shifting identity has taught us to cover a lot of ground. There’s a flow to this album, just like there’s a flow to our setlists. There are some aggressive, rocking moments. Some bouncy, funky moments. An acoustic think piece or two. It’s a balance of moods and textures that we create as a band, almost like a mix tape.”

Formed in 2000 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Greensky Bluegrass kicked off their career playing living rooms and open mic nights across the Midwest. By 2005, they were touring nationally, and by 2006, they were playing the first in a long series of appearances at the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Bandmates Hoffman, Bruzza, dobro player Anders Beck, banjoist Michael Arlen Bont, and upright bassist Mike Devol spent most of the following decade on the road, fine-tuning a live show modeled not after the toned-down production of traditional bluegrass music, but the full-on spectacle of rock.

“We play two sets of music every night with a big light show, and really care about creating a large scale production,” notes Bruzza, adding that, “the goal isn’t just to play important music. We want to cultivate an experience, where people can escape from their everyday lives for a minute and put their worries aside.”

Playing as many as 175 shows per year, Greensky Bluegrass have graduated to headlining status at some of the country’s most iconic venues, selling out amphitheaters like Red Rocks and world-class auditoriums like the Ryman. They’ve become a regular name on the festival circuit, too, adding Bonnaroo, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Austin City Limits, Forecastle, and Outside Lands to their touring schedule. Supported by a grassroots audience whose members often travel for hours to see the band, Greensky Bluegrass are still a proudly independent act, enjoying the success of a major-label act — including a Number One debut on the Billboard Bluegrass chart for their fifth album, 2014’s If Sorrows Swim — without giving up complete control of their own business.

Released on the band’s label, Big Blue Zoo, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted kicks off with “Miss September,” a song that splits its focus between Hoffman’s mid-tempo melodies and the band’s instrumental solos. Most of the album’s tracks strike a similar balance, showcasing a group whose vocal hooks and flat-picking skills share the spotlight equally. Meanwhile, the guys stretch their legs on “Living Over” — an improvised, seven-minute knockout that’s already become a live staple — and show surprising restraint with “While Waiting,” a slower song whose ebb-and-flow arrangement often finds no more than two bandmates playing at once. “Room Without a Roof” features some of the group’s most layered production to date, with electric instruments adding some thick sonic padding, while “More of Me” cranks up the drama, with Hoffman singing about heartache over a bed of minor-key guitar arpeggios.

“We tend to have a darker sense to our songs than most acoustic bands,” Bruzza adds, “but we still have light moments, too. We’re trying to explore the textures and sounds we can make, while still having the instrumentation of a bluegrass band. There aren’t many rules. We’ll run a dobro though an amp on a song like ‘Past My Prime.’ We can get pretty epic. This album is a crazy carnival one minute, and it’s a psychedelic Pink Floyd jam the next.”

Equal parts dark, driving, and dynamic, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted is Greensky Bluegrass at their best, fusing the fiery fretwork of their live shows with the focus of a true songwriting outfit.

CARCASS continues to tour in support of Surgical Steel, released in September 2013. The record came in at #41 on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart, just narrowly avoiding the dreaded “Top 40 Band” moniker. Even with their impressive back catalogue, Surgical Steel has given the band their highest charting and possibly most critically acclaimed record to date.

Surgical Steel
was produced by Colin Richardson (Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Gorefest, Cannibal Corpse etc.) and mixed/mastered by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Accept, Exodus, Testament). Joining guitarist Bill Steer and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker in the band’s current incarnation are new drummer Dan Wilding (Aborted, Trigger The Bloodshed) and guitarist Ben Ash (Pig Iron, Desolation, Liquefied Skeleton). Original sticksman Ken Owen contributed guest vocals as well.

CARCASS has released several classic albums over the years, including Decibel Magazine “Hall of Fame” inductees Heartwork and Necroticism – Descanting The Insalubrious, and their influence has changed the face of extreme metal with every consecutive release. Whether it was inventing gore-grind (see Reek Of Putrefaction, Symphonies Of Sickness) or creating the template for melodic death metal (see Heartwork), CARCASS has always made records by which bars were set and rules were broken. Upon the band’s dismantling in 1996, fans mourned the loss of the seminal act and longed that the group would return again one day. In 2007, the metal world got its wish as CARCASS reformed to play several sold-out reunion shows around the globe. Once again re-motivated to administer a shot of cynicism and infectious riffs into the arm of a sickly metal scene, founding members Bill Steer and Jeff Walker began writing what would become the latest output of their highly influential career,Surgical Steel. Only the choicest of cuts were made, and blood sweat and tears were shed to bring us a record worthy of the CARCASS legacy. In short, Surgical Steel is just what the doctor ordered.

Mixing raucous comedy with borderline-horrific theatrics, the only thing more petrifying than impending health problems resulting from years of overeating is a MAC SABBATH show. Show attendees should be prepared to partake in the fun – MAC SABBATH puts on a theatrical, multimedia stage show – complete with a smoking grill, laser-eyed clowns, bouncing burgers and many more magical surprises… basically anything and everything an unwary show-goer could ever want in their wildest dreams.
“… one of the most interesting bands to come around in a long, long time. They have Dead Kennedys’ outrageous sense of humor mixed with total irreverence and ornate style on top of a solid, engaging performance (even if the crowd is reluctant to respond). So while this whole thing was probably thought up after eating too many pot brownies, it is one of the most brilliant ideas in a long time.”
Troy Farah, Phoenix New Times

“This is not a drill. Be it exchanging Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” for a “Pair-a-buns” or “Iron Man” for a “Frying Pan,” these food-focused musical dweebs are cooking up something hot ‘n’ ready just for you.”Alicia Lutes, MTV.com

“The most impressive-and terrifying-thing about Mac Sabbath is that they’re actually really good. Ronald channels his inner Ozzy onstage, from the manic jumping to the frantic hand waving…” Bryan Rolli, Paste Magazine

“Even if the songs are dripping with onions and extra cheese, Mac Sabbath put on one righteous stage show, complete with smoke machines, gritty power chords, and endless head-banging.”Chris Coplan, ConsequenceofSound.net

Named by Buzzfeed as one of the “13 Metal Bands You Didn’t Know How to React To”

MAC SABBATH BIOGRAPHY

It was the Year of Our Lord 2013, and I was devouring a cheeseburger in a Chatsworth, California, franchise of a certain multinational fast food conglomerate, which shall remain nameless. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a crazed looking clown walking in my direction. Wearing a costume of bright yellow and red, and giant shiny shoes, he seemingly fit into the surroundings, but it didn’t take long to see that something wasn’t quite right. His costume was trailed by long, tattered, hippie fringe that was dirty from scraping the floor (and most likely the alley behind the restaurant), and more alarmingly his face was caked in ghostly make up that looked like it had been smeared on with a putty knife. My first thought was that he looked like Skeletor as a member of Uriah Heap. Taking a seat in my booth, he informed me that his name was Ronald Osborne, and he that he was familiar with my oddity rock band Rosemary’s Billygoat. He was a fan of the band, and said he had a concept I might appreciate, something he termed “drive-thru metal.” Some of the delinquent kids who worked for the franchise had been allowing him and a cast of characters named Slayer Mac Cheeze, Grimalice, and the Cat Burglar, to perform secret rock shows in the bunker-like basements of the local restaurants. But the time had come, he said, to bring drive-thru metal up from the “underground,” and he asked if I would consider becoming the manager of his band. I asked him what the act was called, and proclaimed with pride, “MAC SABBATH!” I barely had time to gather up what was left of my faux food before the restaurant’s manager, apparently annoyed both by the disheveled clown and the content of our conversation, came over and forcefully assisted us out onto the street. As we hit the sidewalk, I looked over at Ronald, watched him brush the dust of cold fries, sodium chloride and GMO remnants of my UN happy meal from his grease-smeared clown suit, and couldn’t help but think there was something special, perhaps even great, about the man.

He invited me to one of these secret shows, and two nights later I was sitting in the basement of a fast food restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, my eyes and taste buds tingling to a new sensation. Drive-thru metal was real, and talk about a feast for the senses! Black Sabbath’s music, hilarious fast food lyrics, smoldering clown heads with laser eyes, a giant purple gumdrop bass player, and Tony Iommi with a giant cheeseburger head. I was confused, amazed, and dare I say it, can’t ever remember feeling so………happy! I told Ronald that yes; I would love to manage his band. It wasn’t going to be easy—nothing ever is with a disturbed clown and a band of Monsanto mutants who refuse to reveal their identities because they think they came here from a wormhole in time direct from 1970. But whoever they are and however they got here, they’re here now and they’re ready, so pull up to the window and check your order, because I am proud to present the world’s newest concept in entertainment, the culinary disgrace that is MAC SABBATH!

About RETURN TO ROOTS Support:
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER:
The Black Dahlia Murder are touring in support of Abysmal, which was named one of the best albums of 2015 by MetalSucks, Metal Injection and Metal Insider, and was called “the best death metal of the year” by New Noise Magazine. Earlier this year, the band released a twisted animated music video for “Threat Level No. 3”. The Adam Avilla-directed piece of moving art can be seen on www.metalblade.com. Abysmal is The Black Dahlia Murder‘s seventh full length release through Metal Blade Records and debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at #45.
The Black Dahlia Murder vocalist Trevor Strnad states, “We are extremely excited to join the Cavalera brothers in the celebration of Roots anniversary. If you would have told me when Roots came out that I’d be touring alongside those two, I wouldn’t have believed you… I am personally very pumped. Don’t be surprised when you see us in the pit!”

COMBICHRIST:
Formed in 2003, Combichrist took founder Andy LaPlegua’s hardcore past and electronica present and merged them into a singular, mechanical music monster. Since releasing the firstCombichrist album The Joy of Gunz, LaPlegua and Combichrist have unleashed six subsequent full-lengths, including 2014’s We Love You, and numerous EPs while also cracking Billboard’s Top 10 Dance Singles chart. Their latest studio effort, This is Where Death Begins was produced by Oumi Kapila (Filter) plus Combichrist‘s own Andy LaPlegua and mastered by the legendary Vlado Meller (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slipknot.) An apocalyptic behemoth of guitars, electronica, infernal drums and dark elemental force, it is easily Combichrist‘s most accomplished effort to date and landed the band a top 30 chart position in Germany.
ALLEGAEON:
Allegaeon recently released the single “Gray Matter Mechanics” from their forthcoming album Proponent for Sentience. The album continues the band’s lyrical themes of space and science with new vocalist Riley McShane, and includes guest performances from Bjorn “Speed” Strid and guitarist Benjamin Ellis. The Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Cobalt, Cephalic Carnage) produced album will be released this fall via Metal Blade Records. A funny play through video for “Gray Matter Mechanics” can be seen now on YouTube. The track has also made an appearance on the Devil’s Dozen count down on SiriusXM Liquid Metal and can be purchased on Bandcamp.
Allegaeon guitarist Greg Burgess states, “What can be said about the Cavaleras that hasn’t already been said? Growing up I think I wore out two copies of Sepultura‘s Live in Barcelona on VHS. Beneath the Remains and Arise were like my metal bible! So, going out with the Cavaleras is a dream come true. We’re very excited to be included on this tour.”
ALL HAIL THE YETI:
This April, All Hail The Yeti released their long-awaited full-length concept album, Screams From A Black Wilderness, via Minus Head Records. The album is based on classic, spooky horror stories and presents a different story with each track. Screams From A Black Wilderness is produced by Matt Hyde, known for his prior work with renowned groups such as Deftones, Slayer, and Soulfly. You can order Screams From A Black Wilderness now viaBandcamp, Amazon, or iTunes.
ALL HAIL THE YETI frontman Connor Garritty states, “This is like a dream come true! The Cavaleras have been a huge influence on AHTY and the entire metal community for many years. Roots was their biggest record and to be able to be a part of this history is a complete honor for us. We are beyond excited to share the stage with all of the bands on this run. We have a great set planned for all of our fans and we hope to see everyone out there! HAIL!”

ONI:
Progressive metal band Oni‘s new album Ironshore is coming this fall – check out the first single “Eternal Recurrence” here. Gleefully contorted, crushingly heavy and insidiously melodic, their debut full-length grabs you from the moment it starts and holds you by the throat. Formed in 2014, the initial vision was one that was deeply rooted in progressive metal but that had a feel all of its own, to rise above a genre that has constantly churned out new groups to an often numbing effect. With Jake Oni handling vocal duties, Martin Andres and Brandon White on guitar, Chase Bryant on bass and Joe Greulich on drums, they are also perhaps the first metal band to feature a Xylo-synth player, in the form of Johnny D, which adds an interesting and intriguing dynamic.
Oni frontman Jake Oni states, “It is such an honor to share the stage with our new brothersMax & Iggor Cavalera, as well as The Black Dahlia Murder, Combichrist, Allegaeon andAll Hail The Yeti. We can’t wait to get out on the road and slay!”

“[Marco] continues a rewarding effort to straighten his twisted sound into the guise of an indie-rock singer-songwriter, harnessing his inventive sonic palette into rewardingly bite-size pop songs that touch on disco and soul” – LA Times

“Music that disregards genres, and the new album definitely carries on that omnivorous approach” – All Music

“The keyboardist’s finest compositional achievement thus far” – Relix

“A swirling pastiche of deep grooves, buoyant pop filigrees and grinding old-school psychedelic reveries” – Boulder Weekly

For more than a decade pianist Marco Benevento has been amassing an extensive body of work. His studio albums and live performances set forth a vision that connects the vast space between LCD Soundsystem and Leon Russell, pulsating with dance rock energy, but smart, earthy songwriting to match. It has led to numerous high profile appearances, ranging fromCarnegie Hall to Pickathon, Mountain Jam to Bonnaroo, while headlining shows coast to coast.

Marco Benevento’s latest LP, The Story of Fred Short, is some of his finest and most adventurous work to date—a maestro making “bold indie rock” says Brooklyn Vegan.  The collection is the follow-up to 2014’s Swift, which found Benevento singing for the first time and honing his psych rock and late night dance party sensibilities. The Story Of Fred Short is a continuation of this exploration with Benevento citing everything from Harry Nilsson, Manu Chau and Gorillaz as inspiration.

Divided into two sides, The Story Of Fred Short oozes with Benevento’s relentless creative spirit in songwriting, performance and production.  Side A is stuffed with mesmerizing dance rock gold.  Marco doubles down on the groove using a rare Casio drum machine that’s become a recurring muse, in addition to a live drummer. The B Side tells the story of Fred Short in seven chapters of wild, heavy rock n’ roll.  Fred Short was a Native American man known for throwing musical bacchanals on the property Marco now lives on in the Catskills.

As anybody who’s seen Marco Benevento perform can attest, with eyes closed, smile wide across his face and fingers free-flowing across the keys, he’s a satellite to the muse. With a devout and growing fan-base, Benevento is an artist whose story is only beginning to unfold.

“There is no weak track on this album. It begins unflinchingly, rising and falling, a complete album…This is the album that sets Big Something into the upper ranks, puts them on the map with the greats. I can’t recommend this album enough.” – Angelica Music

“BIG Something is a rock solid release, surely fit for the accolades that’ll be coming in hot and heavy when it officially drops. Ya just can’t knock an old school live rock band kickin’ funk, jazz, and electronica with a fever—this is fun, good times music for yer earhole—no bones about it, nothin’ more to say.” – GratefulWeb.com

“Comparing them to Rush, Widespread Panic, or Bruce Springsteen is lofty praise. For a band called Big Something, they surely live up to their name.”  – Pop Blend

“It’s not a good band, it’s a great band!” – Artie Kornfeld co-founder of Woodstock ’69, former VP Capitol Records

“Rumbling saxophone solos and processed guitars that seem to ding: this is a band where the tone is BIG. Like MGMT or the Flaming Lips, there are plenty of magical moments that make you wonder “how’d they get those sounds?” – Creative Loafing Charlotte

“Magic…Primarily driven by the combination of guitar, synth and sax, the Big Something offer a complexly interwoven series of grooves marked by rich and sonorous mixes.” – YES! Weekly Magazine

The “Speaking Words” North American Tour Kicks Off on February 20th in Chicago, IL

Watch the Official Tour Teaser via VICE Noisey Here

As announced last month, legendary Anthrax guitarist, author and television personality SCOTT IAN is taking his highly successful “Speaking Words” tour on the road in North America, beginning in Chicago, IL on February 20th. “Speaking Words” isn’t just a hilariously raucous story-telling experience, but an honest look at the insane life that SCOTT IAN has led for the last 31 years, the people he’s met, and the events that coincide. During each show, SCOTT IAN will take part in a special Q&A session with the audience. Fans also have the opportunity to take part in a unique VIP Pack experience. See below for tour dates and VIP Pack information.

Based on the resounding success of the UK leg of the tour, as mentioned above, not only was the decision made to continue the tour here, but also to create a DVD of SCOTT IAN’s Glasgow performance.

The footage has been captured, but now comes the tough part—editing it all together and turning it into a high-quality product. Putting together a DVD like this requires funding, and Scott is asking his loyal fans around the world to help finance the project, by way of a Pledge Music campaign.

Visit the “Speaking Words in Glasgow” Pledge Music page and donate to make this DVD a reality, here:http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/scottian. Also, learn about the truly awesome pledge points ranging from $10-$25,000: like $1,000 for an LA-area vinyl shopping trip, $2,500 to catch a NY Yankees game with Scott, $5,000 for Scott to play on your band’s next record, $12,500 for Scott’s Custom “Zombie Killer” signed guitar, and beyond! The possibilities are endless!

Read a detailed, personal note from SCOTT IAN on how the tour and DVD came about, and how your personal pledge will help benefit the project, below:

“I’ve always loved musicians like Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins, who have the balls to do spoken word performances. It’s just them and the mike. There’s no band to make them look good or cover up their mistakes. They’re alone, naked. It’s seemed like a really cool thing to do, but I’m not especially political and while I’m interested in a lot of different subjects from good food to great comic books, I’m not enough of an expert in any one area to get onstage and talk about it like I know any more than anyone else.

Then over the past five years or so I’ve been lucky enough to become really good friends with some great comedians, like Brian Posehn and Patton Oswalt. We’d sit around and swap stories, and I realized they were as interested in the stories I have about my bands Anthrax and S.O.D., the people I’ve been lucky enough to cross paths with — like Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, Gene Simmons from KISS, the late Dimebag Darrell from Pantera and cutting my teeth alongside the guys in Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth – as I was in their jokes.

The thought of doing spoken word still terrified me, but they helped convince me that I’ve had a bunch of really stupid, funny, tragic and triumphant experiences over the last 10 years or so and that if I could write them all down or at least put them into some sort of order, I’d have at least a couple hours’ worth of material that Anthrax fans, and anyone who likes nerdy (nerdy meaning cool) shit like Star Wars, Stephen King, drinking and sports might want to hear.

Still, being able to sit with my friends in a bar and tell entertaining stories was a long way from standing in front of a paying crowd telling stories that would hopefully entertain them. And, I had no idea how to go about actually booking a show. I just had this big idea that I could do speaking shows and eventually it’d happen.

And it did.

One day my agent came to me and said, “Hello, Scott, I talked to a concert promoter in London and they’re interested in having you come over there and perform. “You mean the band,” I said. “No, he responded, “They’re interested in seeing your solo show.” I paused a couple seconds. “I don’t do a solo acoustic show. I play rhythm guitar and I don’t sing.” He laughed. “No, you idiot. Your spoken word thing. It’s a show called Rock Stars Say The Funniest Things and they want to hear you talk. Anyone who’s ever watched any metal documentary knows you can do that.”

I said yes without even thinking about it. I had four months until the date and I figured that would give me all the time in the world to prepare a killer show. I had all these grand plans to write my show and then invite my aforementioned comedian friends over to my house where I would do the show for them and have them give me notes. I’d be crafting my show, honing into the sharpest, funniest material I had in my brain. Well, four months flew by and I did none of that. Nothing. Not a word written down, not one rehearsal, zero preparation. It had become a nightmare case of be-careful-what-you-ask-for.

The night before the show I was in my hotel room sweating like a maniac trying to figure out a way to get out of doing the show. I said to my wife Pearl, “I can’t do this, I’ve got nothing. Nobody is going to care about anything I have to say. Who did I think I was saying yes to this? I’m going to tell my agent I’ve got the flu and I can’t do it.” Pearl looked at me calmly and said, “No, you’re not going to do that. Your brain is filled with all these great stories that you have told over and over again to your friends in bars all over the world. You know these stories, they’re your life and all you have to do is get on stage and talk to your friends in the bar.” She always has a way of un-confusing me. It really was that simple. Just go talk to the people.

I was nervous as Hell the next day. Pearl’s advice was the right advice but I still had to get up and do it, just me with no guitar or band to hide behind. When the house lights went down and they announced me it took everything I had to put one foot in front of the other and walk onto the stage. I was so nervous I was shaking. I looked out at the crowd, all sitting and waiting to hear what I had to say and using my inside voice I said “fuck it, let’s do this” and I dove in head first.

Once I got over my jitters and latched into a groove I felt like I was performing at Madison Square Garden. The euphoria of being onstage telling stories about my life and getting an immediate reaction from the crowd was better than crystal meth… not that I’ve ever tried crystal meth, but I’ve watched enough episodes of “Breaking Bad” to know it gets you really fucking high. I was making contact, they were intently listening, empathizing and laughing, not at me, but with me. Some stories were better than others, but overall the pace, the flow, the interaction felt amazing. And while I know I’m a long way from guys like Rollins and Biafra, I felt like I had been doing this for years and I couldn’t wait to do it again. I immediately told my agent to book more shows.

A UK and Ireland tour was put together for me and I couldn’t have been more excited. I knew I had something to offer people and that my show would get better night after night, honing it through the experience of actually doing it. Anyway, I figured that while I was doing these shows I might as well bring along a good friend of mine named Mark Johnson to tour manage, drive, and I’d have someone to drink with in cities where I didn’t know anybody. So with a little preparation, a few props and a head full of shit to talk about, I flew overseas and I did my speaking words bit for a couple hundred people a night in small venues. And I called it my Speaking Words tour because that’s what I do. Calling it spoken word was way to fancypants. This ain’t no poetry recital.

Things were going well and after each show, I checked with Mark to see if I wasn’t just high on the fumes coming from the rusted, cracked English heating system. No, he said, I was actually entertaining. Mark is not an ass-kisser, he really could give less of a shit and would tell me if I sucked.

With that endorsement I realized I needed to document the tour by shooting a show. It had to be done.

The shows were getting better and better each night so I decided I would film towards the end of the run in Glasgow. Scotland has always been great for Anthrax and I just had a feeling that that show would be a special one and I would be at the top of my game for sure. We looked back at the footage of the show and it really felt like my stories were coming across great and the Q&A session at the end of the show was a hilarious fucking free-for-all with people asking anything they wanted which would then open the door to so many other stories. I got home and I decided to ask my editor from my Blood & Guts web series to edit it into a full stand-up show for a DVD. We had the footage, now we just needed to put it all together etc etc. Of course, doing a show and turning it into a high-quality DVD requires funding.

Anthrax fans have always been loyal and supportive and that has allowed me to act like a rock star for more than 30 years. So, I wanted to reach out first to my fans to help finance this one-of-a-kind DVD that reveals more about me, my sense of humor and my bizarre career than anything you’ve ever read or seen.”

Lita Ford At The Rex Theater In Pittsburgh On April 26

Onward Promotions will be presenting rock legend Lita Ford at the Rex Theater In Pittsburgh PA on April 26, 2014.  11After, an all-female rock band based in Akron OH, will be the opener for the Lita Ford concert.  Ticket information will be available at RexTheater.com.
A British born rocker who grew up on the streets of L.A., Lita Ford is considered one of the most important female representatives of the rock genre. Being a founding member of the Runaways, one of the first girl groups who unexpectedly broke down barriers in the punk era as well as the male-dominated world of rock music, causing a stir with their six rebellious releases.

Following the demise of the Runaways, Lita Ford concentrated on her own career and now looks back on many memorable hits including: the chart topping duet with Ozzy Osbourne ́Close Your Eyes Forever`, ́What Do You Know About Love`, ́Shot Of Poison`, ́Larger Than Life` and ́Kiss Me Deadly’. With the release of Living Like a Runaway, expect many more songs to be added to the list of hits.

To Lita Ford, the title of her newest solo album, Living Like A Runaway, has two deep and distinct meanings: The first refers to her first band The Runaways, which she was a member of between 1975 and 1980, achieving her international breakthrough. The second reason is of a much more personal nature: “There have been days in my life when I ran away, when I was unhappy and had to get out of my previous life,” Lita confesses. “It‘s like walking through fire and being able to come through the other side unscathed.” She continues, “I wanted to write an album which gives people courage, inspires them and gives them new power, in other words the power of music. As it has done for me on difficult days, I want this music to help people to get through tough times, while remembering their happy times as well. It’s happened to me plenty of times: fans come up to me and tell me how my songs have helped them in difficult situations, in a way it is almost like a soundtrack to their lives.”

Living Like A Runaway was released in June of 2012. The album is available in five different formats: as a limited edition digipak featuring two bonus tracks and a poster, as a gatefold double LP, a jewel case version, an exclusive iTunes version including a bonus track, and for download.

Lita Ford teamed up with producer Gary Hoey and lyricist Michael Dan Ehmig to work on Living Like a Runaway. Together the team invested a lot of time and effort into this kick ass project: “We worked on the lyrics intensively to really give the songs a lot of meaning and that special emotional depth. I think that these are some of the best lyrics ever, period. Ford is referring to numbers such as ‘Devil In My Head,’ ‘Hate’, and ‘The Asylum’ which see her bare her soul in a way which she has never done before.

In addition to lead vocals, Lita and Hoey have arranged beautiful and melodic guitar harmonies rather than just rattling off a bunch of notes. Also contributing to the album is Nikki Sixx who wrote ́A Song to Slit Your Wrist By` which was taken by Lita and completely transformed into a nasty industrial style track with a real F You! attitude. On the track ́Bad Neighborhood` guitarist Doug Aldrich provided the riff, which Lita says, “is a high energy guitar riff that carries the song.” Elton John also gave his blessing to Lita to do a cover of his classic ́The Bitch is Back`, featuring special guests The Uptown Horns.

Unlike many albums today, Living Like a Runaway is an album that truly must be heard in its entirety from start to finish. “Listeners shouldn’t pick out individual tracks but listen to the full album,” says Ford. “It’s a fascinating musical journey, inspired by Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I had seen a documentary about Dark Side of the Moon and it really motivated me to focus on Living Like a Runawayas a whole journey rather just an individual song.

Opening for Lita Ford in Pittsburgh will be the all-female rock band, 11After, Akron’s very own “Bad Girls of Rock n’ Roll”.  The band has three independently produced CDs and two videos under their studded belts.  The four-female-force of dynamic talents are well known for their tightly woven and loosely flowing sound throughout their diverse array of original music recordings and popular live shows.

D Cruise, lead singer/songwriter, is the driving force behind this exciting act and draws on her unique life experiences for both her lyrics and her incredible performing presence. Her raspy growl and stage antics combine for the ultimate ‘rock chick’ experience.

11After has toured extensively across the U.S. and have seasoned their sound at places like Cleveland’s House of Blues, Akron’s biggest summer party ‘Live at Lock 3’, and many other venues, dive bars, and clubs too numerous to mention. In 2012 they opened for Skid Row twice and were on the bill with Warrant, Firehouse, & Trixter for a festival in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Originally opened as a vaudeville theater in 1905, the Rex Theater has been a fixture on Pittsburgh’s Southside for over a century. Over the last decade, the Rex has found a place as a concert venue with full service bar.

Onward Promotions has promoted concerts for 6 years now in over 30 states and in over 30 different venues ranging from 60 capacity up to 2540 capacity.  They promote local, regional, and national acts and several different genres.  Some of the artists they have promoted include Brian McKnight, Rick Springfield, Skid Row, The Motels, and A Flock Of Seagulls.

SCOTT IAN Legendary ANTHRAX Guitarist “Speaking Words” Tour Hits PGH 2/22 Rex Theater

SCOTT IAN: Legendary ANTHRAX Guitarist, Author, and TV Personality Officially Announces “Speaking Words” Tour, North American Leg

New 60-Second Video Teaser Launched via VICE Noisey

SCOTT IAN’s Hilarious One-Man Storytelling Experience Kicks Off in Chicago, IL on February 20, 2014

“Geek, author, guitarist, icon: when it comes to recounting the history of metal, SCOTT IAN is the man – catch him while you can.” – Alex Milas, Editor, Metal Hammer

At this point, it’s no surprise to anyone that legendary heavy metal musician, author, and television personality SCOTT IANhas a lot to say. After decades-worth of international touring with Anthrax, bumping elbows with illustrious (and sometimesridiculous) characters all over the media spectrum, and undergoing general “you won’t believe this” experiences— SCOTTIAN certainly has some hilarious and surprisingly personal stories to share.

Following the resounding success of the UK leg of his “Speaking Words” tour, Scott is picking up the mic again for a 15-city North American leg, kicking off in Chicago, IL on February 20th.

An official “Speaking Words” tour teaser, featuring professional footage from his upcoming “Speaking Words: Live in Glasgow” DVD (pre-order coming soon), has been exclusively released via VICE Noisey today. Watch it here.

Don’t mistake this for your run-of-the-mill spoken word tour. In SCOTT IAN’s own words, “it ain’t no poetry reading” either. “Speaking Words” is an honest look at the insane life that Scott has led for the last 31 years, the people he’s met, and the events that coincide. During each show, Scott will take part in a special Q&A session with the audience.

SCOTT IAN adds, “England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Germany; I’ve been “Speaking Words” all over the world. My friends in the U.S. and Canada, you asked for it and now I finally get to bring it home! I’m looking forward to talking with ya, talking at ya and telling you some amazing tales of drunken debauchery and ridiculousness. No punches pulled, no swear word left unturned, and no question avoided in the Q&A. Let’s do this!”

A special opportunity to join a VIP meet & greet at each date is available now via SCOTT IAN’s webstore. This unique and limited event will allow you to spend time with Scott like never before. It’s a veritable post show hangout with a metal legend— one that’s sure to enrich your knowledge of not only all-things SCOTT IAN, but Anthrax and metal history in general. The VIP meet & greet also includes a special VIP laminate, banner, and other goodies. Learn more and get your passes here:http://bit.ly/1jXEPen

ODESZA Shares New Video & Mix; Spring Headline Tour/Rex Theater PGH 2/5

WATCH “MY FRIENDS NEVER DIE” VIDEO

LISTEN TO NO.SLEEP MIX.03

2013 was a massive year for Seattle production duo ODESZA. It saw the release of the My Friends Never Die EP with three of the five tracks hitting #1 on Hype Machine. Relentless touring followed, including dates with Pretty Lights, Emancipator, Michal Menert, and performances at Sasquatch Music Festival, Lightning In A Bottle, What The Festival, Summer Meltdown, Capitol Hill Block Party, MusicfestNW, Decibel Festival,Decadence and Symbiosis Gathering. Pretty Lights tapped ODESZA to remix “One Day They’ll Know,” which also hit #1 on Hype Machine and #8 on the iTunes Electronic Chart. ODESZA also selected their favorite producers for a follow up remix EP, My Friends Never Die Remixes, and launched the ambitious, ongoing mixtape series NO.SLEEP.

ODESZA must’ve missed the memo that Christmas is over. They’re keeping the holiday spirit alive well into 2014 with a headline tour of the west coast following a month-long run with Emancipator on the east coast. To whet the appetite, ODESZA has a new video for 2013 standout track, “My Friends Never Die.” Premiered earlier today via Refinery29, the “My Friends Never Die” video depicts a raucous night of partying, not dissimilar to an ODESZA live performance. Since they’re in the spirit of giving, ODESZA is also sharing NO.SLEEP Mix.03, which was premiered this afternoon on Run The Trap. It’s the excellent follow-up toNO.SLEEP Mix.02which was released in December via Thump. So, kick your feet back, crack a beer, and turn the speakers up. You have some listening to do.

Singer/songwriter STEPHEN KELLOGG playing at Rex Theater in Pittsburgh on 11/16

STEPHEN KELLOGG is a well-respected and critically-acclaimed musician who was previously with his band The Sixers (they disbanded last year) and has built a very firm solo career with support from USA Today, Paste, No Depression, CMT and many others.

His album Blunderstone Rookery (named after the protagonist’s home in Dickens’ David Copperfield) is a very smart and critically hailed album that CMT Edge has said, “his memorable melodies keep the music moving while the lyrics pull you into a deeper story.” The Seattle Post Intelligencer chimed, “Anyone who appreciates the singer-songwriter tradition needs to know Stephen Kellogg.”
His timely-themed next single, “Thanksgiving”, is an epic tale in the same vein as “Alice’s Restaurant” and “American Pie”, a ten-minute opus with a soaring chorus that pulls at the heartstrings and breathes life back into that family-oriented holiday.  USA Today premiered the poignant video.

Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds playing 11/8 in Pittsburgh at Rex Theatre

Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds – an 8 piece soul infused rock band will be in Pittsburgh on 11/8 at Rex Theatre in support of the October 1 release of Fight – their 4 song EP produced by American Idol’s Randy Jackson.

First single “The Long Way”premiered on billboard.com
Full EP available to stream HERE.
Glamour hit the nail on the head when they described SSDB as what you get when you cross Amy Winehouse and Tina Turner with Mick Jagger and a dose of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. It’s big-city grit and down-home sweetness together with a bit of Americana.Sister Sparrow is Arleigh Kincheloe – lead singer and principle songwriter who works out melodies and lyrics on the piano before bringing them to the 8-piece, all maleband The Dirty Birds. When you see them live, you won’t believe that such a dynamic, powerful voice comes from such a tiny lady (often clad in leather and sequins).

Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds have opened for Fitz and the Tantrums, Counting Crows, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, and been on a three week run with Allen Stone that culminated in an Austin City Limits late night set. They’ve sold out The Bowery Ballroom and The Independent in San Francisco. You can listen to their most recent release and watch a live performance of “Make it Rain” here >

“A Brooklyn-based nine-piece whose funk, rock and soul infusion have garnered them much-deserved attention.”
– HUFFINGTON POST

“They are so soulful that they sucked out my soul, soaked it with their own soul until it was about to burst, and then pumped it back into me.”
– WEEKLY DIG BOSTON

“Sister Sparrow, Arleigh Kincheloe’s nom de disque, is a soul queen with a voice strong and raspy enough to compete with riffing horns and clipped funk beats.”

Brooklyn’s Rubblebucket has unveiled a video for their latest single, “Save Charlie,” courtesy of NPR. The animated video encapsulates both the song, “Save Charlie” and Rubblebucket perfectly, as NPR’s Bob Boilenexplains, “The color and style feel fresh and so perfect for the blasting horns and funk of the music.” Created by Andrew William Ralph and TJ Andrade, Ralph shares, “Through experimentation using my animation and Andrade’s visual effects and editing, we were able to develop a look that not only unified our visions, but more importantly, drew from the band’s aesthetic to bring the music and lyrics alive.”

This new collection finds Rubblebucket unabashedly being…well, Rubblebucket. Between psychedelia-lined pop-structures, symphonic brass embellishments, dirty funk guitar lines, and surrealist yet poignant lyrics, this EP gives Rubblebucket fans what they’ve come to love and expect — intelligent pop music that will make you think, smile and shake your ass.
Rubblebucket has spent the bulk of 2013 focusing on writing new material, an unprecedented situation given the outfit’s grueling tour schedule spanning the past few years. With heaps of new material still being recorded, the Save Charlie EP is a sample of what’s to come in 2014 when the band will release their long-awaited follow up LP to 2011’s Omega La La. Rubblebucket will be taking their new songs on the road this fall with a tour that kicks off in NYC on October 1st, running through December. Last year fans may remember the bands’ dancing robot puppets, love tunnels, crowd-surfing horn-players and full audience dance-parties on stage; only time will tell what the band has up their sleeves for this run! See all dates below.
Lastly, earlier this year Rubblebucket performed for PBS’s nationally-syndicated program Live at Infinity Hall, which has begun airing in select cities. While this concert will be made available to the public via online streaming later this month, you can check out a sample of what’s to come.

For more information on Rubblebucket, please visit www.rubblebucket.com. See below for tour dates and tracklisting.

RECENT PRAISE:

“The song “Save Charlie” follows the Rubblebucket template… piling horns atop a scratchy funk guitar line and a booming danceable beat buoying up Traver’s breathy voice.”
– Wall St. Journal

“Vermont-by-way-of-Brooklyn ensemble Rubblebucket is being the change they wish to see in the world and the weather by churning out sun-drenched, tropical quirk pop.”
– NOISEY

Within The Ruins Making a Name for Themselves

On Tuesday August 6th, Within the Ruins played at Pittsburgh’s own Rex Theatre while supporting All Shall Perish on the South of the Border tour. Lately, Within The Ruins have been making a name for themselves ever since they released their latest album “Elite” earlier this year. The album has been getting a lot of praise and has been getting a lot of support by other bands such as All Shall Perish, Oceano, The Acacia Strain, The Faceless, I Declare War and so many more. Their following just keeps getting bigger.
Now even though they were not the headliner Tuesday night, it seemed as if the majority if not everyone was actually there to see Within The Ruins. Sadly they only played seven songs, six from “Elite” and the title track from “Invade”. Throughout the whole night, the crowd has never been so energetic until they came out to play. Out of the seven bands that were there, they were the only band to actually have a mosh pit going on during their set. There wasn’t any holding back at that point since it was everyone who was right at the front of the stage. Just to experience this band live is a whole other experience from their albums. When you see a band live, it should always be like that though. The energy they bring to the stage is unreal on so many different levels. All of the technicalities in their music along with how all of a sudden it changes directions and just drops to heavy metal just keeps your attention the entire time they play. It seems as if there is no limit for these guys right now.
If you get the chance, you need to check Within The Ruins out as soon as possible. They are actually about to go back on tour with The Acacia Strain as soon as this tour with All Shall Perish is over.
Setlist From Tuesday:
1. Terminal
2. Solace
3. The Charm
4. New Holy War
5. I, Blaspheme
6. Feeding Frenzy
7. Invade

Ultraviolet Hippopotamus w/Dopapod @ Rex Theater Feb. 8

Ultraviolet Hippopotamus is an explosive five-piece progressive improvisational band with a rapidly growing fan base across the U.S. and Europe. Described as “brightening the future of the jam band scene,” Ultraviolet Hippopotamus mixes tight, funky jams with new dance beats, heartfelt lyrics, compelling composition, eccentric effects and a vibrant light show for an incredible, one-of-a-kind musical experience. Known for its on-stage musical alchemy – cultivated from years of relentless touring – the band performs an eclectic selection of technically demanding compositions and improvised material along with unconventional and fun covers.

The band recently joined the rooster at Hoplite where founding partners Tom Baggott and Chris Cate have presided over the foundational career development of Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Railroad Earth, Ryan Montbleau Band, Zach Deputy and many other smaller artists. Through time spent at other agencies or in other roles ranging from artist management, tour management, production, marketing and management over the last 20+ years, they also participated in the career growth of Agents of Good Roots, Johnny Winter, Michelle Shocked, The Radiators, Tim Reynolds, Victor Wooten and many more. The band is now being managed and booked by the agency which has already led to bigger and better touring opportunities.

Ultraviolet Hippopotamus also just spent time in the studio recording a new concept EP, Broomhilda Suite, which they released to fans at its Halloween 2012 show. It is now available for purchase at shows and online for just $5. Broomhilda Suite is the band’s latest studio effort featuring an epic story of the hero Kanyon and his journey to defeat a mean, old witch Broomhilda. The band is extremely proud of the work and can’t wait to release a full-length studio album later this year.

The group deftly journeys between funk, jazz, livetronica, space rock, reggae, bluegrass, and progressive rock within a single show and, sometimes, within a single song. Exploring new ground and taking risks make every performance unique, and fans are never sure what exactly the band will deliver each night; other than exceptional music.

Anyone remotely familiar with the ‘jam band sound’ will immediately recognize Ultraviolet Hippopotamus’ influences and genre-mixing musical objectives, but the band adds a level of talent, intricacy and polish that truly sets it apart. Tight, energetic jams and outstanding vocals — a true rarity among the band’s peers — coupled with the act’s spontaneity and strong songwriting add to its appeal. The word is out, and the band is quickly developing into an international sensation.

Ultraviolet Hippopotamus’ highly praised third album, “Square Pegs, Round Holes,” reached No. 3 and spent much of the year in the top 25 of the Relix Magazine/Jambands.com National Radio Chart and was voted “2011 Studio Album of the Year” at the Home Grown Music Network. It also received similar nominations from several radio programs, among other acclaim. The album continues to sell steadily and receives airplay across the U.S. as well as internationally in Italy, Brazil, France, Switzerland, England, Spain, Germany and other countries.

Dopapod
Dopapod exists at the crossroads of full throttle intensity, deep pocket groove, intricate technicality, and limitless experimentation. With no regard towards limiting themselves to stylistic boundaries, the sound that emerges from the quartet both live and in the studio is as varied and diverse as the many influences that they adapt from.

Jeremy McCall Live at the Rex 1/17/2013

Jeremy McCall and his band-mates play a mixture of rock, acoustic, funk, blues, and gospel music and are set to bring their eclectic and progressive set live to The Rex Theater in Pittsburgh’s Southside on January 17, 2013.

The songs draw from a wide musical perspective. Most have a generous amount of acoustic funk in their conception. World rhythm structures occur commonly. Many use elements of jazz harmony, with bits of rock, blues, folk, and country. Above all, the music is meant to be fun. And as the band states, “If it provokes thought, fantastic”.

According to the band’s website, “All of the songs were conceived using an acoustic guitar (though not all finished this way). Some tunes would find completion in a day or two, and others have taken slightly longer (years). These songs were born from several themes: we have choices to make, and jobs to do, and help is available. Some thoughts/dreams do not fade. People go through experiences that make no immediate sense. There is a plan and a purpose, usually beyond our scope. And, one can learn many life lessons from an old Dodge.

Each step in the process of writing these songs has a sort of an internal significance. The songs on this album seem to deal with ideas of truth, or “truths” of human existence. Ideas for many have their roots in Biblical theology. Generally the songs are multilayered in their meaning and application”.

Jeremy McCall’s present idea is to release the album in pieces, until the whole is completed. “Check Out Time” has been released and is available on iTunes. The Small Stones EP is nearing completion, and will be released shortly. The songs will be ordered as to their appearance on the album at a later date.

Maddie Georgi is “Glory Bound”

Named one of Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s “Young Pittsburghers To Watch”, Maddie Georgi has been just that. Her latest EP Glory Bound is set to release on January 11, 2013 and as the title alludes, she has a very bright future ahead of her. Maddie Georgi sounds like KT Tunstall, Grace Potter, Carrie Underwood, and Adele.

1355879337_Maddie-0046

Her first EP Go was released in 2009. Among the six tracks was “Take My Hand,” her first original song that was inspired by her autistic brother, Jake. The song gained popularity throughout the autism community and motivated Maddie to continue writing and performing music.

Throughout 2009, the release of Go propelled Maddie to cross paths with Country Music Television (CMT) on several occasions. Competing in CMT’s Music City Madness competition, her song “Gone Away Again” took second place out of 60,000 entries. CMT liked Maddie’s voice so much; they used her voice for the theme song to one of their sitcom’s Working Class.

You can catch Maddie performing live at the Rex Theater in the South Side of Pittsburgh, PA on the 11th of January, 2013.
