“Let It Out has always been our most popular song, I think because it best represents the things that make us a unique band: complex arrangements, cool violin parts, high energy and honest lyrics. We wanted a video that would showcase the song while giving people who don’t know us an idea of what we’re like live, so we went with a simple performance video, using lighting tricks in post to emphasize the lyrical message and structure of the song. We were fortunate enough to work with some immensely talented people in the studio and behind the camera, and they really helped us bring this project to life.” – Hunt For Hunter

Hunt for Hunter is a 4-piece symphonic rock band based in New York City. “Symphonic rock” may sound like an ambitious genre to claim, but this is a band that was explicitly formed with the intention of creating music without limits or boundaries. Originally conceived in 2014 as an acoustic folk duo by Ian Hunt (drums) and Michael Hunter (vocals/electric violin/keys), Hunt for Hunter found some initial success playing in small bars, cafés and colleges around the Northeast. They occasionally experimented with hiring additional players to play Hunter’s heavier, less folksy material, but lacking a clear sense of direction the band eventually came to a crossroads in the winter of 2018.

The choice was simple, to take the easy, safer path and continue on as a folk duo, or go for broke and attempt the impossible: form a successful, original rock ‘n roll band in NYC. They chose the latter, and as luck would have it, Chris Kelly (bass) and Patrick Brennan (guitar) were ready and waiting to sign on. All four members had actually played with each other before through their day jobs as professional freelance musicians. Equipped with a considerable level of proficiency and unified by their desire to play exciting, original music they began writing and rehearsing in earnest.

Drawing inspiration from diverse influences like Queens Of The Stone Age, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and more modern bands like Manchester Orchestra, The Dear Hunter and Nothing But Thieves, the quartet set upon their mission to create an ambitious yet accessible sound. The result is a band that successfully combines the raw emotion and energy of rock ‘n roll with the intricate orchestrations and virtuosity of classical music. Now poised to share their music with the world, Hunt for Hunter is proud to carry the label “symphonic rock.”

INTERVIEW: MAX AND IGGOR CAVALERA (CAVALERA CONSPIRACY) DISCUSS THE ROOTS TOUR

Max and  Iggor Cavalera are the original founding members of influential RIAA Gold-Certified Brazilian heavy metal legends Sepultura, and specifically the team behind the band’s early albums, including seminal releases AriseChaos A.D. and Roots. Since the band’s formation over 30 years ago, the Cavalera brothers have each seen unparalleled successes in the music industry. Max’s more recent work with SoulflyCavalera Conspiracy (also featuring Iggor) and Killer Be Killed, in addition to Iggor’s project MIXHELL, proves the lasting power of the Cavalera legacy.

Later this year, Warner Music will release a special vinyl edition of Roots, in addition to a CD/vinyl box set of classic Sepultura records, with more surprises in store.   In celebration of Roots twentieth anniversary, Cavelara Conspiracy will play the entire Roots album front to back.  It’s going to be an amazing must see event.  Select dates will have sets from The Black Dahlia Murder, Combichrist, Allegaeon, All Hail The Yeti & Oni and the tour will hit Pittsburgh Oct 9 at The Rex. Full tour itinerary below.

We had the pleasure of talking to the two founding brothers, Max and Iggor, just before they head out for the momentous tour.

As founders of Sepultura and this being the twentieth anniversary of Roots, is there any increase in your emotions regarding this particular tour?

Max: IT’S GREAT TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE WHOLE ROOTS RECORD 20 YEARS LATER!  THE ALBUM HAS BECOME A CLASSIC METAL ALBUM AND I AM PROUD TO PLAY IT ALL OVER AGAIN 20 YEARS LATER.  IT’S GONNA BE GREAT.

What are the challenges to playing the full Roots record that non-musicians may not realize?

Max:  THE ALBUM IS MORE MINIMALIMax-_horizontal-620x409STIC AND MORE SIMPLE THAN OTHER SEPULTURE RECORDS, BUT BEWARE OF THAT, IT’S GOT MORE IMPACT AND POWER.  STUFF LIKE CUT-THROAT, SPIT, AND STRAIGHTHATE ARE GONNA BE AMAZING LIVE.  PURE ENERGY!

Will audiences hear anything else besides Roots?

Max: I DON’T THINK SO.  ROOTS IS QUITE A LONG ALBUM AND WE PLAN TO PLAY THE WHOLE THING FROM BEGINNING TO THE END.

In an interview, Max, you stated that Roots, “changed the face of metal”.  Could you explain how you think Sepultura and Roots did that?

Max: THE MIXING OF WORLD MUSIC AND METAL WAS NONEXISTENT UNTIL ROOTS, SO I THINK ROOTS CHANGED THE WAY PEOPLE LOOK AT HOW TO MAKE A METAL RECORD WITH AN ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT.  I FEEL THAT ROOTS INSPIRED BANDS LIKE SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SLIPKNOT, MELECHESCH, ACYL, ETC., OR SO I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MANY OF THESE MUSICIANS.  IT OPENED THE DOORS FOR ME AS AN ARTIST TO CONTINUE TO EXPLORE METAL WITH WORLD MUSIC.

We have heard that you found the original backdrop and will be using it on the tour.  Have you found anything else audiences may find of interest and what type of stuff do you hold onto?

Max: YEAH, WE GOT THE ORIGINAL BACKDROP!  I WILL ALSO BE PLAYING THE BERIMBAU ON THE BEGINNING OF ATTITUDE AND I LOVE THE TRIBAL MERCHANDISE WE HAVE.

Sepultura was founded when both of you were in a very tough situation with your family and finances being slim.  How do these experiences slip into your music and become a cathartic method?

IggorWE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN OURSELVES AND WORKED VERY HARD, SO THE FINANCIAL PART; IT WAS ANOTHER WAY TO RISE WITH MUSIC.

Max: MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING.  WHEN YOU HAVE NO MONEY YOU GOTTA BE INVENTIVE AND ON THE EDGE.  WE MADE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING.

The tour kicks off in Vegas 9/12, just a little more than a week away.  Has there been a lot of prep with rehearsal and pre-tour work?

Iggor:  WE DID A FEW REHEARSALS FOR THE AMNESIA FESTIVAL IN CANADA GIG, SO WE WON’T NEED AS MANY REHEARSALS THIS TIME BEFORE VEGAS.

Max: WE WILL PRACTICE FOR A COUPLE DAYS BEFORE GOING ON TOUR SO WE CAN GET THE SONGS JUST ABOUT READY TO JAM.

You have a unique meet and greet opportunity for fans available at the merch table.  Can you tell us more about this?

Max: WE LOVE TO MEET THE FANS AFTER THE SHOW.  THIS TIME IT WILL BE MYSELF AND IGGOR.  IT SHOULD BE A LOT OF FUN MEETING AND TALKING TO THE FANS.

Iggor:  THIS IS SOMETHING THAT ME AND MAX, WOULD EASILY DO IF WE HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET OUR IDOLS. ITS FROM FANS TO OUR FANS.

Did the Olympics interest you more due to being in Brazil?  And do you think all the publicity was a good thing or a bad thing?

Iggor: OLYMPICS ARE ALWAYS A WAY TO BRING DIFFERENT PEOPLE TOGETHER, SO IN BRAZIL IT WAS NO DIFFERENT, (IT WAS) A VERY SPECIAL EVENT.

Max:  I AM HAPPY WE (BRAZIL) WON THE GOLD IN SOCCER AND THAT THE OLYMPICS TURNED OUT QUITE GOOD FOR BRAZIL.  IT WAS QUITE AN AMAZING FEAT TO PULL THIS OUT.

What is going on with Killer Be Killed or any other projects?

Max: YEAH, NEXT YEAR I WILL WORK ON ANOTHER KILLER BE KILLED RECORD!  THIS WILL BE OUR 2ND AND SHOULD BE GOOD!

Iggor: I HAVE BEEN DOING DRUMS FOR SOULWAX, ALSO PLAYING WITH MIXHELL AND HAVING FUN WITH PROJECTS LIKE LIVEWIFE, AND DOGDICK.

We heard you plan to go to Istanbul to play.  With the current climate in Turkey and what happened in Paris with Eagles of Death Metal, does this concern you at all?

Iggor: WE LIVE IN VERY TURBULENT TIMES, BUT WE CANT STOP PLAYING OUR MUSIC IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.

Max: NO, MORE THAN EVER WE NEED METAL SHOWS IN PLACES LIKE THAT OTHERWISE THE ASSHOLES WIN AND THATS NOT GOOD.  PEOPLE NEED TO RELEASE THEIR ANGER THROUGH MUSIC.

You are playing Oct 9 in Pittsburgh with All Hail The Yeti, Combichrist and Oni opening.  Any Pittsburgh memories?

Max:  I LOVE PITTSBURGH!  IT’S GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF A SHOW AND A HISTORIC EVENT IN METAL.

Igor: PITTSBURGH ALWAYS ROCKS!!! I STILL REMEMBER THE ELECTRIC BANANA CLUB.

We can’t thank Max and Iggor enough for spending time with us and we intend to spend a lot more when they hit Pittsburgh Oct. 9!

Queens of the Stone Age Perform on ‘Austin City Limits’

Queens of the Stone Age made their Austin City Limits debut last week with an epic, hour-long performance, all of which you can watch below.

Also, be sure to check out the bottom video, which is an online-exclusive performance of “Like Clockwork.”

In other QOTSA news, the band looks like they will be releasing some new tunes in 2014.  According to a story in http://metro.co.uk, Homme says the band have ‘more than enough songs’ for a new album, despite releasing their last just a few months ago.

Asked by Rolling Stone if fans could expect a new LP soon, he replied: ‘Absolutely. We have more than enough songs. We’re booked ’til September, but after that we plan to jump in the studio and get going.’

He also said that the secret to a successful recording session isn’t being a control freak but relinquishing some control.”

‘When it’s time to make music, that’s about getting lost for me,’ he explained. ‘To be a control freak is not half as good as being a freak who’s casually in control. You’re feeling around in the dark for something that feels good. As long as you’re not in an orgy, that can be an amazing moment.’

…Like Clockwork was a critical and commercial hit for the band in 2013, reaching No. 2 in the UK album chart and No. 1 on the US Billboard 200.

Later in the year, Homme will make a guest appearance in hipster-lampooning sketch show Portlandia.

Book Review: “One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager”

Let me start by saying that if I had this book in my possession twenty-five years ago I would definitely be in a different place right now in my life and I certainly could have been a much better asset for the bands I managed.  Not that I have any regrets, but instead of watching “Almost Famous” and just wondering how one goes about getting on the road with the band, this book actually gives you a step by step guide.  Mark Workman lays out such a comprehensive strategy to becoming a working tour manager that if one has the will, Workman provides the way.

Mark Workman has been a successful tour manager and lighting designer in the music business since 1983. His list of past and present clients includes Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Machine Head, Danzig, Mudvayne, Dio, Queens of the Stone Age, Devildriver, Soulfly, Sepultura and many others.

As a lighting designer, Mark Workman has designed high-impact lighting performances for many music tours, including the infamous Clash of the Titans (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice In Chains, & Suicidal Tendencies) in 1990/1991 and American Carnage 2010 (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax & Testament), as well as for many music videos and live DVDs such as Machine Head’sElegies DVD filmed at Brixton Academy in London, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace Live DVD shot at the Hollywood Palladium, and Testament’s Dark Roots of Thrash Live DVD shot at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY.

“One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager” starts of  with a very strong endorsement by Alex Skolnick of Testament, of which Mark Workman was the lighting director then later manager.  These are the topics that the book explores:

Part 1 tells you how I got started as a tour manager and why I wrote this book.
Part 2 teaches you how to organize a concert tour and:
create a complete and accurate tour budget;
hire the best road crew;
lease the right tour bus and safest driver;
book hotels and air travel the right way;
create a proper backstage pass system and where to get it made;
deal with foreign artist tax for your band;
apply for overseas visas and work permits for your entourage;
create a tour book and the vital information it should contain;
coordinate trucking and air cargo;
Introduction
xiii
hire sound and lighting systems for your tour;
understand tour riders and contracts;
prepare ATA carnets and equipment manifests;
get backdrops, scrims and stage sets made;
prepare your tour accounting and a lot more.
Part 3 shows you how to get organized and properly advance each show and:
what you should know about stage plots and input charts;
preparing your pre-advance package;
making a proper advance sheet;
how to advance each show;
advancing your cash requirements and much more.
Part 4 guides you through an entire show day and shows you:
what it takes to be a tour manager running a music tour;
the mechanics of how to do press, meet-and-greets, and in-stores;
the proper way to do your guest list each day;
the right way to handle venue security;
how to do your daily tour accounting correctly;
how to do your show settlement each night;
important information about merchandising, foreign currencies, and more.
Part 5 shows you how to:
promote yourself so you can build your successful career;
find your first job as a tour manager;
and the road hazards to avoid.

That list speaks volumes, but the content definitely backs it up.  Add to that Workman’s writing style that is very smooth, humorous at times, and easy to understand, and you have one hell of a how to guide.  The promise of a series of these books is very enticing and long overdue.  It would not be surprising to see Berklee School of Music or The Musicians Institute making this book, or eventually the series, part of their curriculum…it’s that good.

If you want to get into the music business, are in the music business already, or are like me, and just fascinated with the music business, you will find this to be a treasured find.

Mark Workman is also a former boxing writer whose feature articles have appeared on BoxingScene and Fox Sports.

Queens Of The Stone Age Are The Feel Good Hit of The Summer’s End At Stage AE Pittsburgh

The last time I witnessed Josh Homme and company it was at the tight quarters of Club Laga in uptown Pittsburgh with original bassist Nick Oliveri, with guest vocalist Screaming Trees legend Mark Lanegan, as well as former drummer Joey Castillo.  That was nearly twelve years, three official releases, and a ton of other projects ago.  And Josh Homme’s creative hive of talent has just never not let up that entire time.

First becoming fascinated with Homme’s skills, like many others, in the band Kyuss, I have come to truly appreciate his evolution over time.  Last night was a nice encapsulation of that evolution by the signature sounds represented by the set list (see below).  With the help of long time guitarist, (since 2002 and also backing vox, keyboard and percussion) Troy Van Leeuwen, guitarist/keyboardist Dean Fertita, bassist Michael Shuman, and new drummer Jon Theodore, Homme brought the goods as always and totally got the Pittsburgh crowd rolling early by delving into early QOTSA right away.  With quips like, “My friend backstage told me this crowd was really drunk.  Which is great ‘cuz we’re drunk too!” he quickly endeared himself to the drinking town with a football problem (although lately it’s been a baseball problem as next door PNC Park was packed with the Pirates pulling out another win and fireworks going off throughout the set).

The visuals on the big screen were truly amazing and lent themselves to the whole experience as I took in the sights of people truly getting their groove on to that special blend of rock mix that only Queens brings.  Highlights of the evening were certainly, “Burn The Witch”, “The Sky Is Fallin'”, “No One Knows”, “Feel Good Hit Of The Summer” and “Song For The Deaf”.  The show was a superb way to end the outdoor summer shows and hopefully it will not be so long before QOTSA visit us again.

John Cale Kicks Off West Coast Tour With Cass McCombs This Week

John Cale kicks off his West Coast tour with Cass McCombs tomorrow in support of his new album, Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood (out now on Double Six Records). This week marks the first time in over half a decade that Cale has played some of these western cities. With McCombs in tow, the two are sure to offer a pan-generational demonstration of tireless and timeless songwriting. As a teaser of this iconic pairing, both artists are sharing new tracks today. “Hatred” by John Cale was previously only available as a bonus 7″ that came with the deluxe edition of Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood. “Empty Promises” by Cass McCombs, premiered by Pitchfork today, is the b-side of the Bradley Manning 7″ released earlier this year. You can stream both below.

John Cale Tour Dates:
Tue. Dec. 4 – Portland OR @ Mission Theater w/ Cass McCombs
Thu. Dec. 6 – Seattle, WA @ Showbox w/ Cass McCombs
Sun. Dec. 9 – San Francisco, CA @ Regency Ballroom w/ Cass McCombs
Tue. Dec. 11 – Los Angeles, CA @ El Rey w/ Cass McCombs

Fri. Jan. 18 – Brooklyn, NY @ BAM [When Past & Future Collide: Paris 1919]
Sat. Jan. 19 – Brooklyn, NY @ BAM [When Past & Future Collide: Paris 1919]

In January, as part of the three-night Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, John Cale will perform two very special productions. On January 16, he celebrates the legacy of Velvet Underground vocalist Nico – entitled Life Along The Borderline – performing with special guests Nick Franglen (Lemon Jelly, Blacksand), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Joan as Police Woman, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, Gutter Twins), Magnetic Fields, Meshell Ndegeocello, Peaches, Sharon Van Etten and previously unannounced, Yeasayer. On January 18 and 19, Cale will perform his 1973 landmark album, Paris 1919, in its entirety with his band and the 20-piece Wordless Music Orchestra, followed by music from Cale’s repertoire, including Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood.

Queens of the Stone Age and Dave Grohl Reunite?

This picture on QOTSA’s Facebook sure piqued a lot of interest. With Josh Homme confirming that drummer Joey Castillo out, seems Dave might be taking advantage of Foo Fighters extended hiatus. Remember Grohl played on the band’s 2002 album, Songs for the Deaf (and did limited touring until Joey took over). Of course there is that other “small” band with Led Zep great JP Jones and Homme in Them Crooked Vultures. It would not surprise anyone that Dave is back behind the kit, never being one to sit still. Look for QOTSA’s new CD to be out by June before the Download Festival.

Download Festival 2013- Anarchy in the UK!

Anyone want to head to the U.K. in June?
Slipknot, Rammstein, and Iron Maiden made their announcements to participate in Download Festival 2013 earlier; Alice in Chains, Queens of the Stone Age, Motorhead, 30 Seconds to Mars, the Gaslight Anthem, HIM and A Day to Remember have all been added to the bill with more announcements to come.
If you have the inkling and want to head out check out the Download Festival Website here.

SPIRALARMS

Friends since the age of 15, Tim Narducci (Lead Vocals) and Craig Locicero (Lead Guitar) bonded over their love of heavy metal and hard rock music. Although the two remained friends throughout the years, they both went their separate ways and started bands of their own. After years of playing with their respective bands, the two friends contacted each other and decided it was time to start playing music together again, and in 2004 SPIRALARMS was born. Rounding out SPIRALARMS is Cornbread (Bass/Vocals), who had recorded and toured the US and Europe extensively with the band Vicious Rumors, Brad Barth (Keyboards), Anthony Traslavina (Guitars) and Ron Reeden (Drums).

Last, the band is no stranger to the road. With multiple West Coast tours, a U.S. tour in 2010, the band is comfortable with the hard work of touring to build a core audience. SPIRALARMS has also been active playing out live supporting such acts as Black Label Society, MSG, Kill Devil Hill, and performing at Graspop 2007 with Iron Maiden. The band is currently finishing their new album, Freedom, set to be released soon.

ZED
San Francisco Bay Area’s ZED takes it cues from the greats like Zeppelin, Sabbath and AC/DC, but combines them with their contemporary musical influences such as Clutch, Rage Against the Machine and Queens of the Stone Age, creating a mixture that is new, yet familiar. ZED is Pete Sattari (Guitar/Vox), Rich Harris (Drums), Greg Lopez (Guitar), and Mark Aceves (Bass).
In April 2010, ZED released their first full-length album, The Invitation, which they had been brewing in the studio for over a year. The Invitation has a hard driving, aggressive sound but with solid groove that can’t be ignored. In June of 2012, ZED entered Sonic Room Studios with SPIRALARMS’ Tim Narducci engineering and producing their follow up to The Invitation. Word on the street? It’s their best work to date. The album is due this fall and will be included in their set during the Revivalution tour.

SWERVER
San Jose, CA veteran band SWERVER consists of Jimmy Arceneaux (Guitar/Vox), Dan Lawson (Drums) and Stevie Loveless (Bass). The band has been known to deliver heavy riffs, wrapped in memorable hooks, all served up with a slightly darker tone than their contemporaries. Tapping into heavy topics such as depression, racism, and various addictions, SWERVER reaches out to the fans who listen to music, rather than those who just hear it.

Motometer Serves Up Addictive Self Titled Debut

Did you ever find yourself surfing YouTube and watching the “Will it Blend?” segments for hours on end? Imagine taking two very talented “guns for hire” musicians who met at NAAM and putting them in a blender with influences such as Queens Of The Stone Age, King Crimson, Cream, The Black Keys, Deep Purple, Audioslave, Animals As Leaders and Frank Zappa. What comes out is Motormeter and the taste is addictive.

Motometer is the duo of Stephen Dusenberry (drums, samples, synthesizers) and Adam Fagelson (frankenbass). The group has played with some well-known artist including Peter Cetera, George Clinton, James Brown, Steve Miller, George Benson, Maynard Ferguson, Foghat and Molly Hatchett. And this Sunday July 7 you can catch them doing their own thing at Altar Bar at PM with Protomen, Tracksploitation, and Dethlehem.

As Pittsburgh Music Magazine played their self-titled debut “Motometer” at maximum volume it was found that the blend of genres kept a groove that could be explained as the feel of watching an evil science project unwinding into something out of control and dangerous yet you can’t stop staring at it’s beauty. The instrumental tracks that are punctuated by ‘movie-like’ snippets for vocals throughout felt like being in a sports car driving top speed at 2AM with no headlights on a mountain with no guardrails. In short: We dug it. There are so many layers to their music and so many little nuances to pick up on. The rhythmically based tunage has funk, jazz, metal, and rock all over it. Songs such as opener ‘Mexi Pepsi’ and follow up ‘Cuda’ have a gorgeous atmosphere that is reminiscent of Rush, Joe Satriani, and late night horror flicks from Japan. As the effort progresses there are hints in ‘Flint’, ‘Hwood’, and ‘The Eight’ of ZZ Top, Chick Corea, White Zombie-ish/Queens of the Stone Age style vocal clips, all topped off with a feeling of having becoming more broadened yet secretly dirtier for listening. The whole piece goes together like a finely orchestrated meal- many courses all tempting your listening buds in different ways.
What you really get is something quite familiar yet entirely unique at the same time. When musicians create for themselves rather than for the masses you get an artistic purity that can’t help but rub off on those who love music and not just what is marketed to them. In these dog days of summer Pittsburgh Music Mag will be grabbing the ice and liquor and hitting the “Motometer” button on the music blender full blast.

Motometer has already caught quite a buzz. Check out some of these quotes:
“They really have something unique happening”
Will Kennedy (Drummer) – The Yellowjackets, Quincy Jones
“{Fagelson} weaves pop sensibility with dynamic, rip roaring rock and roll bravado.”
Charleston City Paper
“Dusenberry’s precision and melodic sense are flawless across the heavily complex material. The drummer’s intensity, innovation, and rhythmic complexity are constantly showcased.”
Modern Drummer
“Motometer are one of the coolest bands to come out in a long time. Their debut release is sure to garner them a lot of attention.”
GW Hill (editor-in-chief) – Music Street Journal
