Superjoint release “Caught Up In The Gears Of Application”

dsc_6635SUPERJOINT was resurrected in 2015 after the original band broke up a decade earlier. At the behest of the late Corey Mitchell, co-founder of The Housecore Horror Film Festival, SUPERJOINT founders Philip H. Anselmo (Down, Pantera, Scour, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Arson Anthem et al), Jimmy Bower (Down, Eyehategod), and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al) joined forces with longtime comrades, drummer José “Blue” Gonzalez (Warbeast, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals) and bassist Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Woven Hand, 16 Horse Power). A new era of the band was born.

Consequently, the band members found true joy in playing together again. After just two tours, new material followed culminating in the scathing sounds of Caught Up In The Gears Of Application. “The minute we started writing, I knew this record would be brutal,” reflects Bower. “Sticking to our true hardcore roots and signature SUPERJOINT sound, we accomplished a record that needed to happen in today’s underground. It’s pissed off! After being on hiatus for eleven-plus years, the chance at a new SUPERJOINT record wasn’t something we took lightly. With newcomers Steven and Joey, we were psyched and eager to get in the Lair and start writing and after two tours with the new lineup, we were able to hit the writing hard! Didn’t take long to accomplish, and we stood and smirked at the playback of what would be the new SUPERJOINT record. With songs like ‘Receiving No Answer To The Knock’ and ‘Sociopathic Herd Delusion’ we had everything to smirk about! This record brings our viscous style of hardcore back to life. Pissed off with everything to prove, SUPERJOINT is back!”

Adds Anselmo of the offering, ““The overall theme means many things, or no things, but there is an underlying message regardless, about how modern technology — computers and all that comes with them, mainly — has affected our lives. As a musician, it has affected my life both negatively (music being stolen) and positively (being in touch with fellow musicians around the world and staying visible). But when looking at the broader spectrum, computer-land has given everyday people a platform in which to bellow like carnival barkers about anything and everything, humdrum or political, whether qualified or not, some with good intentions, some with disingenuous intentions, and some with ideas that lay somewhere in the middle, creating a mishmash of results.”

Preorders bundles for SUPERJOINT’s Caught Up In The Gears Of Application are available via Housecore at THIS LOCATION. For digital preorders, point your browser HERE or HERE.

SUPERJOINT will bring their venom to the stage for their official record release show on November 12th, 2016 in Dallas, their only US appearance of the year. Tickets are on sale now!

AUTHOR & PUNISHER: 2014 Live Assaults To Commence Today

AUTHOR & PUNISHER will bring the steel to the stage this Sunday in Los Angeles for the first of two performances supporting audio terrorists, Corrections House. The show marks the first of a three-week journey that will find AUTHOR & PUNISHER – the gargantuan sound manipulations of one Tristan Shone – again rupturing pavement alongside Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals on the second leg of the Technicians Of Distortion Tour. The chaos will rise on January 10th in Houston, Texas and head westward, leveling more than a dozen cities. Additional support will be provided by Hymns.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER continues to tour in support of the mammoth Women & Children full-length, released last year via Seventh Rule Recordings. Commended by Cvlt Nation for manifesting “the perfect blend of man and machine,” who furthers, “Shone crafts a truly dense and unbridled set of doom and drove-inspired music, all of which is accompanied by a visceral, emotionally-rich live performance,” the record continues to floor fans and critics nationwide and abroad for its disturbingly poignant brand of industrial doom. In employing primarily custom designed and fabricated machines, speakers and various devices that draw heavily on aspects of industrial automation and robotics, Shone – who boasts a BS in mechanical engineering and an MFA in visual arts — manages to replicate dejection, desperation and earthly doom through sound with curious poise. On his latest run of audio demonstrations, Shone will road-test a new set of electromechanical vocal manipulation masks and devices, which have yet to be engaged live.

“Traces of doom, dubstep, industrial, noise, and honest-to-goodness pop show up within Shone’s best songs. His music is immediate but mysterious, a chimera that’s recognizable but strange.” – Pitchfork

“…a powerful and chilling piece of music…” – Metal Injection

..extremely loud, bass-heavy, powerful and industrial, calling to mind Godflesh-gone-‘roidal.” – MetalSucks on the A&P live experience

LOUDER THAN HELL THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF METAL IS KILLER

Got mycopy of Louder Than Hell in the mail yesterday…wow.  Really, no B.S. No filler, all killer.  I read a ton of rock bios and rock related books every month; actually I read a ridiculous amount.  Half of those books are decent, a quarter complete garbage, the other quarter is split between excellent and “how the fuck did this get published?”.  Louder Than Hell falls in the category of “I will now devour this, keep your grubby hands off of it, no you can’t borrow it, and yes it’s a bit beat up ‘cuz I keep going back to it again and again”.  Yep, it’s that cool.  There really is nothing like getting the story straight from the people in the middle of the shit, deep and dirty in the trenches.  And that is what this book gives you.  If you are a fan of rock, metal, music in general, you owe it to yourself. Get this book!

“…no one’s gone quite as deep into the genre’s recesses as this 736-page oral history…”

– ROLLING STONE (4 star review!)

“It’s an aficionado’s delight.”

– NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

“…an amazing account of the four-decades-old genre…”

– LA WEEKLY

“If you want some debauchery and demonology to go with your gentle summer breezes,Louder Than Hell is the tome for you.” – YAHOO SUMMER MUSIC GUIDE, “ROCK’S BEST BEACH READS”

“Essential.” REVOLVER (4/4 stars review!)

“An indispensable oral history of an often misunderstood musical genre.”

KIRKUS REVIEWS (a starred review!)

“I’m not saying this just because I’m in the book, but . . . if you love metal, great stories, and music history told by the people who made it, then Louder than Hell is a must-read.”

—ALICE COOPER

“…the authors’ inclusiveness give this examination a weight that is just as heavy as the music.”

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal is in stores TODAY! Compiled from over 400 interviews conducted by respected music journalists Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman, LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal (It Books; May 14, 2013; Hardcover; $32.50) is a chronological history of heavy metal, told through the words of the men and women who created it, played it, re-invented it, and continue to rock it.

Last night (May 13), co-authors Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman threw a hugely successful public party and signing at Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY. An in-depth Q&A was moderated by That Metal Show’s Don Jamieson and renowned music photographer Stephanie Cabral (her gorgeous, full-color photos can be seen in the book) also joined the session. The event was such a huge success that the venue actually ran out of beer and the authors ran out of books to sign! Press and photographers came out in droves. See below for some photos from last night, taken by well-known New York photographer Greg Cristman.

On a related note, Jon and Katherine visited the Rock N’ Roll Heaven and Old Bridge Metal Militia Reunion Concert and Fundraiser in Freehold, NJ this weekend to witness the stellar line-up and sell signed books for charity. Again, all books were sold out before the end of the show and the authors were able to raise over $400 in proceeds to donate to victims of Superstorm Sandy.

The amount of positive reaction that LOUDER THAN HELL has received so far is staggering, as the quotes above can attest to. Not surprisingly, LOUDER THAN HELL was already being used as an official source even before the book release.  This book is being recognized as a credible, definitive guide to the history of heavy metal.  As published in the New York Times on May 3, the paper of Record referred to the new book LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal” to gain further insight into their story.

Revolver senior editor Wiederhorn and Nights with Alice Cooper producer Turman dug deep into their extensive list of contacts to uncover never-before-heard stories, eye-opening admissions and the truth behind metal’s most explosive legends. Candid and confessional commentary comes straight from icons of the genre, including: Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Dickinson, Eddie Van Halen, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Lita Ford, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Axl Rose, Slash, Corey Taylor, Dave Mustaine, Chuck Schuldiner, Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond, Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Slayer’s Kerry King, Phil Anselmo, Rob Zombie and more. With an introduction by Scott Ian of Anthrax and an afterword by Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and with two 16-page photo inserts, with some never-before seen candid shots by celebrated rock photographers Stephanie Cabral and Robert Matheu, this is the book metal fans have been waiting for.

The many musicians interviewed by these veteran journalists offer their take on their influences, touring, the music business, and songwriting, as well as their often-traumatic upbringings, battles with substance abuse, and bizarre sexual exploits. Industry insiders (including managers, record label executives, family members, friends, scenesters, groupies, journalists, and porn stars) provide additional insight.
From the creation of Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, to Judas Priest’s development of the leather-and-studs look, to Metallica introducing the world to thrash, to the inception of Ozzfest, to Faith No More accidentally creating the first hybrid of rap and metal, to the provocative exploits of the Sunset Strip scene, to the death and destruction surrounding Norwegian black metal, LOUDER THAN HELL gets to the meat of the metal matter:

  • Rob Halford of Judas Priest reveals how he kicked cocaine and alcohol in 1986 after tragically witnessing his boyfriend’s suicide and sought solace in spirituality, which has helped the Metal God stay clean to this day.
  • Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose talks about the early days of Guns N’ Roses, the making of the 36-million-copy-selling debut Appetite for Destruction, and how Robert Willams’ graphic cover art was censored.
  • Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi explains how he lost parts of his fingers while working a day job in a factory – and created homemade prosthetics so he could play guitar, which changed the tonality of the instrument and the sound of heavy metal forever.
  • Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson shares how he dug through his own vomit in search of the balloon of heroin he’d swallowed to avoid being arrested by the police, and then used that heroin to celebrate his victory over not getting busted.
  • Members of Metallica and Anthrax detail the horrifying events of 1986 when Metallica’s tour bus crashed and tipped over, crushing bassist Cliff Burton beneath it while the rest of the members escaped relatively unscathed.
  • Alice Cooper reveals how it was really wheelchair-bound members of his AUDIENCE who tore the live chicken apart during his fateful concert in Toronto, while Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne give first-person accounts of Ozzy biting the head off a dove while wasted during a high-level record company meeting, and decapitating a bat onstage during his Diary of a Madman tour.
  • Hellhammer, drummer of Norway’s pioneering black metal band Mayhem, talks about ex-vocalist Dead committing suicide and how guitarist Euronymous used a chunk of Dead’s brain to make a Mexican stew.
  • Biohazard guitarist Billy Graziadei details how gang bangers stabbed a member of the group’s posse with a hunting knife while shouting, “Payback, Motherfucker!” and how the band vowed to retaliate. Vocalist Evan Seinfeld also recounts his graphic sexual liaisons while on tour, and how they led to his career in porn.
  • Slipknot bassist Paul Gray (who died of an overdose at age 38 during the writing of LOUDER THAN HELL) discusses the evolution of the lineup; physical fights between band members, and his own struggles with addiction.

LOUDER THAN HELL explores the transformation of metal culture, with stories and anecdotes straight from the mouths of the most infamous and successful bands. Filled with hundreds of revealing interviews representing every type and era of heavy metal—from metal progenitors such as Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and the MC5 to current day innovators including Slipknot, Mastodon, and Lamb of God—LOUDER THAN HELL is the ultimate look behind the curtain at one of our most dynamic, controversial and enduring musical genres.

Advance Praise for LOUDER THAN HELL:

“This is the best oral history I’ve read since Please Kill Me. Louder than Hell is the first book that really delivers the brutal truth from the mouths of the artists and key players themselves!

I couldn’t put it down.” —Matt Pinfield

Louder Than Hell comes straight from the twisted minds of rock icons and flows seamlessly through various eras of heavy metal. You hear from the guys that were there on the stage, in the pit, puking in the gutter. It brought back memories, and I even learned a few things I never knew. I really dig this book.”  —Riki Rachtman, DJ, VJ

“Books on the history of even something as cool as metal can be a bit antiseptic and boring—not this one. It’s the story straight from the horse’s mouth. Even better is when the horses have experimented with drugs and black out occasionally. . .” —Brendon Small, creator of Dethklok and Metalocalypse

“Who likes rock n roll here?? Well if you do, this is the book for you! Every rock has been overturned, every band has been analyzed, quoted, and lionized and every page offers a new fact or figure that you probably didn’t know. This is the definitive chronicle of all that is heavy metal and I’ve read them all!”  —Chris Jericho, Fozzy

“Katherine Turman and Jon Wiederhorn know metal. Louder than Hell is an amazing gathering of different breeds of heavy metal rockers telling the tales metal fans want to hear.”

—Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine

“This is the book every metal fan should own. A fascinating high-octane chronicle of metal mayhem that takes readers on a wild ride, from metal’s earliest days to the head-banging present. I’m not saying this just because I’m in the book, but . . . if you love metal, great stories, and music history told by the people who made it, then Louder than Hell is a must-read.”

—Alice Cooper

Louder than Hell is a love letter to the misunderstood genre of heavy metal music, written by trusted companions who had a front row seat on the devil’s rollercoaster. The definitive chronological testimony by the people who were there, including some who are no longer with us.” —Mark McGrath, Sugar Ray and co-host Extra

“An amazingly comprehensive book on all eras and genres of hard rock and heavy metal. The stories and attention to detail make it an instant must for anyone who ever was or is a fan.”

—Eddie Trunk, DJ and host of “That Metal Show” on VH1 Classic

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS: New Testimonial Video Featuring MAX CAVALERA of SOULFLY

Guys- I’ve got to tell you that this is a very awesome book.  It’s definitely one any metal fan needs or would cherish as a gift.  This is not a read as much as a list of all things metal that make you think back, discover, argue, and maybe even move ahead.  Pittsburgh Music Magazine devoured our copy and it’s already pretty dogeared around here!

See what the press is saying about THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS:

A “Lovingly compiled bible of all things metal.” – Entertainment Weekly

The lists are literary (“Best Metal Blogs”), humorous (“Completely Unnecessary Heavy Metal Subgenres”) and fight-stirring (“The Best Metal Albums Ever!”). – New York Times

The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists, compiled by Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is the ultimate look at the world of heavy metal via the ease and convenience of a list. No stone is left unturned here, and I mean no stone. If you think you have a list about metal that isn’t in this book, chances are you’re wrong. Both Jenkins and Abrams have exhaustively researched and brainstormed Merciless and delivered a look at their beloved genre that is informative and fun.” – Iann Robinson, CraveOnline.com

“If you love metal and you love lists like I do, you must check this book out.” – Richard Christy, Charred Walls of the Damned/The Howard Stern Show

“I love lists and even more than loving them, I love to call them out for being wrong.  Normally it’s the bullshit that Rolling Stone or Revolver puts out that gets me the most angry, but now there’s a real book I can look at with my elitist mindset… There have been a lot of metal books coming out over the last year or so, this one actually has me interested.” – Sam Roon, SkullsnBones.com

“This April, there’s sure to be plenty of arguments coming between metalheads as ‘The Merciless Book of Metal Lists’ arrives in bookstores everywhere.” – Chad Childers, Loudwire.com

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is out NOW! Today, Loudwire.com is exclusively hosting a new testimonial video for the book, this time featuring SOULFLY’s Max Cavalera! Max took a brief break from writing the new SOULFLY record to read the “The 10 Hardcore Punk Albums that Shaped Thrash Metal” list and comment on the book. Check out the video here: http://loudwire.com/the-merciless-book-of-metal-lists-receives-max-cavalera-approval/.

PHILIP ANSELMO and WARBEAST Confirm ‘War of the Gargantuas’

WARBEAST Set to Release New Full Length Album ‘Destroy’ in Early 2013

Legendary Pantera, Superjoint Ritual and DOWN vocalist PHILIP ANSELMO and Housecore Records thrashers WARBEAST recently announced that they will be releasing a new split album entitled War of the Gargantuas. The split now has an official release date of January 8, 2012 and will include two songs from each artist. This album serves as the first release of any solo work by PHILIP ANSELMO during the span of his nearly 30-year legacy. Also, the two WARBEAST tracks on the split feature former bassist Alan Bovee before his amicable departure from the band. Since then, Dre Karst has joined on bass.

“This split is a glimpse into the future of both my solo project and ultimate thrash metallers WARBEAST. The title of the split is War of The Gargantuas and it is fitting on many levels because of our combined love for the 60’s Japanese film of the same name, the power of our combined musical output(s) and our humorous affection that plays out within each of our “Gargantuan” personalities,” states PHILIP ANSELMO. “Both WARBEAST and myself have full length LP’s that will be released shortly after this is released, but this split is unique musically. It is a time capsule; a loud pause ‘til we both release our full length products. Enjoy the destruction of music!”

“These two songs we have on War of the Gargantuas were the next level after Krush The Enemy,” states WARBEAST guitarist Scott Shelby. “They’ve been a staple in our set list for the last two years. These songs are a pure demonstration of our unique Texas thrash metal style.”

WARBEAST also recently announced the upcoming release of their second full-length album, Destroy. The album is scheduled to be released in early 2013 via Housecore Records and is currently in the mastering stages. Stay tuned for more information on Destroy coming very soon.

War of the Gargantua LINE UP:

Bennett Bartley – Bass
Jose Manuel Gonzales – Drums

WARBEAST are:

WARBEAST Kicks Off Tour with DOWN Next Week

Housecore Records thrashers WARBEAST are set to head out on tour with DOWN next week! The band will join the U.S. tour on September 18th in their hometown of Fort Worth, TX and will travel with DOWN and label mates haarp with a few shows with special guests Pentagram and Saint Vitus and others until October 2nd in Charlotte, NC.

The band is also pleased to announce upcoming European tour dates with DOWN. They will then continue the tour in November with several stops in Germany. DOWN vocalist Philip Anselmo had some words to add about bringing WARBEAST on the road.

Worth style,” states Anselmo. “These guys are tailor made for our brothers and sisters across the pond, and I expect them to fucking kick some almighty ass, and gain a shitload of new fans.”

“This has been a goal for each one of us from our earliest bands and from the inception WARBEAST,” states WARBEAST vocalist Bruce Corbitt. “Here in the USA, many of us are envious of the European metal scene. So going on a European Tour with our bro’s in DOWN is even better than a dream-come-true for us. It honestly feels unreal and surreal that this is actually going to happen. Metal Masters 4< will feature Philip Anselmo (Pantera/Down), Kerry King (Slayer), Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Frank Bello (Anthrax), plus Billy Sheehan and Gary Holt (Exodus/Slayer).

Metal Masters 3, which took place at the Key Club in Los Angeles, featured the “Metal Masters” demonstrating their techniques and styles used to create the music that millions bang their heads to every day.
